Mamaroneck Ems And The Continuity Of Operations: Homeland Security On A Local Level, Samantha M. Gagliardi Jan 2012

Mamaroneck Ems And The Continuity Of Operations: Homeland Security On A Local Level, Samantha M. Gagliardi

Master in Management for Public Safety and Homeland Security Professionals Master's Projects

The definition of homeland security and all that it encompasses has been an ongoing discussion since the events of 9/11. As a homeland security professional it has become clear to me that homeland security is not only a federal obligation, but a local priority as well. All events are local and the government cannot be solely responsible for the preparation, response, and resilience of each individual community. The Village of Mamaroneck is a small jurisdiction approximately 30 miles from New York City. The prime threat this Village has faced is inclement weather and severe flooding due to the multiple floodplains …

Continuity Of Operations: A Strategy To Secure The Nation, Matthew J. Cassidy Jan 2012

Continuity Of Operations: A Strategy To Secure The Nation, Matthew J. Cassidy

Master in Management for Public Safety and Homeland Security Professionals Master's Projects

The sharing of power and responsibilities between the individual states and the federal government is detailed in the US Constitution and is called federalism. Research has indicated that the shift of power between the states and federal government has waxed and waned over the last 236 years. This qualitative study is based upon literature review of the relationships of local, state, and federal governments in responding to catastrophes. Each level of government brings unique capabilities to the response to catastrophic events. There is no need to usurp federalism in order to survive the next catastrophe; it is going to take …

Acetylcholinesterase Isozyme Banding May Be Useful In Revealing Heart Failure, Cherelle Palmer, Charlene Blando-Hoegler Jan 2012

Acetylcholinesterase Isozyme Banding May Be Useful In Revealing Heart Failure, Cherelle Palmer, Charlene Blando-Hoegler

Student-Faculty Research Projects

Cardiopathology provides insights into the functioning heart and its circulatory vessels. Recent studies have proposed a critical role for esterases in heart failure (Dunlop et. al. 2003). Evidence points to a loss of vagal (parasympathetic) control and a parallel increase in sympathetic activity as the disease progresses. Other researchers (Ojaimi et.al. 2007) used microarray technique on tissues from canine paced heart failure models to show selective re-regulation of genes as the pathology developed. To further explore this connection, a pilot project comparing the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from normal (N) and heart failure (HF) specimens was designed. Non-denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis …

Patents V. Statutory Exclusivities In Biological Pharmaceuticals - Do We Really Need Both, Yaniv Heled Jan 2012

Patents V. Statutory Exclusivities In Biological Pharmaceuticals - Do We Really Need Both, Yaniv Heled

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Over the past decade or so, the United States has been the arena of a boisterous debate regarding the creation of a new regulatory framework for the approval of generic versions of biologics-based pharmaceutical products (also known as "biological products" and "biologics")--an important and increasingly growing class of drugs. The basic purpose of such a framework is to create a fast and less-costly route to FDA approval for biologics that would be similar or identical to already-approved biological products--typically ones that are sold on the market at monopoly rates--thereby allowing cheaper versions of such medicines to enter the market. One …

Improving Patent Notice And Remedies: A Critique Of The Ftc's 2011 Report, Alan Devlin Jan 2012

Improving Patent Notice And Remedies: A Critique Of The Ftc's 2011 Report, Alan Devlin

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

2011 was an eventful year for those interested in patent law. In March, the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") released a report that urges the Patent and Trademark Office ("PTO") and courts to remedy perceived inadequacies underlying the U.S. patent system. The FTC observes that people of skill in the art routinely encounter difficulty in determining the meaning, and hence exclusive scope, of a patent's claims. Not only does this failure of notice stymie the efficient dispersion of technology throughout the economy, the FTC argues, but the judicial process can aggravate the problem by granting inappropriate remedies in patent-infringement cases. Then, …

An Explicit Policy Lever For Patent Scope, Anna B. Laakmann Jan 2012

An Explicit Policy Lever For Patent Scope, Anna B. Laakmann

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Since its inception in 1982, the Federal Circuit has declined to take an overt role in setting patent policy. Dan Burk and Mark Lemley have observed that the court instead implicitly engineers patent policy through selective application of its patentability rules, which operate as "policy levers." Recent decisions on the patentability of diagnostic and therapeutic methods illustrate a significant problem with this approach. By maintaining a façade of adjudicative rule formalism while tacitly manipulating its rules to approximate policy goals, the court perpetuates empirical uncertainty about the patent law's practical effects. This Article proposes that the Federal Circuit use the …

Exploring Conformational Variability Of An Rna Domain In The Ribosome: From Structure And Function To Potential Antibiotic Targeting, Yogo Sakakibara Jan 2012

Exploring Conformational Variability Of An Rna Domain In The Ribosome: From Structure And Function To Potential Antibiotic Targeting, Yogo Sakakibara

Wayne State University Dissertations

RNA in nature is modified at many specific sites to order to gain extra functions or to expand the genetic code. One of such RNAs is ribosomal RNA (rRNA), which contains several modified bases, particularly around the functionally significant sites. We have focused on understanding the influences of modified base on RNA structure and function by employing helix 69 (H69), which is a good region to evaluate the roles of modified bases since it contains three pseudouridines in the loop region and exists at the core of the ribosome.

Previous model studies using small hairpin H69 showed the conformational differences …

In Vivo Display: A Selection And Its Derivatives For Antimicrobial Peptide Lead Identification, Wesley David Colangelo Jan 2012

In Vivo Display: A Selection And Its Derivatives For Antimicrobial Peptide Lead Identification, Wesley David Colangelo

Wayne State University Dissertations

The rise of antibiotic resistance necessitates new approaches for the isolation of new antimicrobials with novel inhibitory mechanisms, bypassing the development of rapid resistance by modification of pre-existing resistance mechanisms. In response, we have developed a series of systems for the rapid isolation and identification of peptides that inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and other bacteria, termed in vivo display (IVD).

IVD harnesses the cellular processes of E. coli for the expression of a library of random peptides at the terminus of a display protein. A library of 12-amino acid random peptide sequences was added to either the C- …

An Examination Of Relationship Experiences In Relation To Loneliness And Depressive Symptomatology In Emerging Adulthood, Stephanie Bernardon

Wayne State University Dissertations

Emerging adulthood is a complex, multifaceted, unique and systems-oriented developmental period whereby individuals encounter a wide range of factors, each of which influence their subsequent adulthood outcomes (i.e., adaptive and maladaptive pathways). Given the importance of studying psychological adjustment and different types of loneliness in emerging adulthood, the purpose of the present study was to assess depressive symptomatology and family, social, and romantic loneliness in emerging adulthood. Specifically, the present study examined the impact of PARTheory (i.e., early relationship context), current attachment experiences in close relationships (i.e., current relationship context) and sense of mattering to family and friends (sense of …

Analysis Of Gene Expression Alterations In Premalignant Progression From Normal Mammary Epithelium To Ductal Carcinoma In Situ By Multiple Orthogonal Tools, Hitchintan Kaur Jan 2012

Analysis Of Gene Expression Alterations In Premalignant Progression From Normal Mammary Epithelium To Ductal Carcinoma In Situ By Multiple Orthogonal Tools, Hitchintan Kaur

Wayne State University Dissertations

Mammary ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is being found in great numbers of women due to the widespread use of mammography. The molecular and genetic changes underlying the progression from normal breast tissue to DCIS are not clearly understood. The goal of the present study was to determine gene expression changes in different DCIS models (MCF10.DCIS, SUM102 and SUM225) in comparison to normal breast epithelial cells (MCF10A) that may enable us to identify novel markers of disease progression and potential therapeutic targets. We cultured the cells in three dimensional reconstituted basement membrane (3D rBM) for RNA extraction and used the …

"Still Here, Trying To Find My Way": Understanding The Experiences Of Hiv Disruption And Reorganization Among Older African Americans In Detroit, Andrea Nevedal Jan 2012

"Still Here, Trying To Find My Way": Understanding The Experiences Of Hiv Disruption And Reorganization Among Older African Americans In Detroit, Andrea Nevedal

Wayne State University Dissertations

Adults aged fifty and older are the fastest growing age group with HIV/AIDS. Research on older adults with HIV has focused primarily on health status and physiological changes that occur as people age with HIV. However, little is known about the socio-cultural consequences that occur when older adults are diagnosed with HIV and as they age with HIV. Drawing from an anthropological approach to the life course and Becker's (1997) framework of life disruption, this dissertation research explored to what extent people experienced disruption from living with HIV and reorganized their lives after experiencing disruption.

The specific aims included identifying …

Crossing The Valley Of Death: A Multi-Sited, Multi-Level Ethnographic Study Of Growth Startups And Entrepreneurial Communities In Post-Industrial Detroit, Marlo Rencher Jan 2012

Crossing The Valley Of Death: A Multi-Sited, Multi-Level Ethnographic Study Of Growth Startups And Entrepreneurial Communities In Post-Industrial Detroit, Marlo Rencher

Wayne State University Dissertations

The intention of this research is to reveal the humanity of the startup experience for American growth companies. What is it about the growth entrepreneurship experience that has been hidden from view? Can we begin to articulate a holistic view of entrepreneurship--including those human universals and culture-bound particulars that must be successfully navigated?

This study is an ethnographic account of three Detroit-based entrepreneurial communities and the people within them. This research examines the sociocultural features of entrepreneurship on three levels. The first level of context for growth businesses to be studied is that of their entrepreneurial community. These communities have …

Dioecious Plants: Evolution And Sex Ratio And Asepen Decline, Jordan P. Sinclair Jan 2012

Dioecious Plants: Evolution And Sex Ratio And Asepen Decline, Jordan P. Sinclair

Wayne State University Dissertations

Although dioecious species are rare in nature, the sexual system appears in a diverse number of families and across all life forms and global locations. We looked at the population dynamics of natural populations to determine why many dioecious populations display biased sex ratios. We also looked at the role incestuous matings, seed and pollen dispersal patterns, and compensation play in the evolution of this sexual system using two theoretical models we developed. Finally, we studied aspen populations in the Midwest to determine how climate variables affect growth and decline. We found many dioecious species display male biased ratios and …

Resilience And Law As A Theoretical Backdrop For Natural Resource Management: Flood Management In The Columbia River Basin, Barbara Cosens Jan 2012

Resilience And Law As A Theoretical Backdrop For Natural Resource Management: Flood Management In The Columbia River Basin, Barbara Cosens

Articles

The 1964 Columbia River Treaty entered by the United States and Canada for mutual benefits in flood control and hydropower generation is under review in anticipation of expiration of certain flood control provisions in 2024. This Article asserts that nonstructural measures should be the primary focus of new expenditure on flood risk management in the Columbia River Basin over the next sixty-year period of treaty implementation to align flood risk management with management for ecosystem resilience. Resilience is the measure of the capacity of a system to maintain important functions, structures, identity, and feedback through adaptation in the face of …

Conservation Reliant-Species, Dale Goble Jan 2012

Conservation Reliant-Species, Dale Goble

Articles

A species is conservation reliant when the threats that it faces cannot be eliminated, but only managed. There are two forms of conservation reliance: population- and threat-management reliance. We provide an overview of the concept and introduce a series of articles that examine it in the context of a range of taxa, threats, and habitats. If sufficient assurances can be provided that successful population and threat management will continue, conservation-reliant species may be either delisted or kept off the endangered species list. This may be advantageous because unlisted species provide more opportunities for a broader spectrum of federal, state, tribal, …

Crafts Of Color: Tupi Tapirage In Early Colonial Brazil, Amy Buono Jan 2012

Crafts Of Color: Tupi Tapirage In Early Colonial Brazil, Amy Buono

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Tyrian purple. Lamp black. Lead white. Cadmium yellow. Ultramarine blue. The materiality of color, as it is often discussed, has a fixed quality. Pigments and dyes derived from many natural substances-minerals, earths, plants, and animals-have stable optic qualities. Lapis lazuli can be reliably counted upon to be blue. Dyes made from cochineal consistently fall within a certain range at the red end of the spectrum. Similarly, we might expect that the green feathers of a bird such as the Festive Parrot (Amazona festiva), after molting, would be replaced by equally green plumes. As the excerpt above suggests, from …

The View From Down Under: Freedom Of The Press In Canada, James Allan Jan 2012

The View From Down Under: Freedom Of The Press In Canada, James Allan

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

In this paper the author considers the issue of press freedom and compares Canada to what is probably its closest constitutional cousin, Australia. He argues that although Australia has no national bill of rights, constitutional or statutory, there is at least as much press freedom, and indeed scope for citizens to speak their minds, as there is in Canada with its Charter of Rights.

Metaphor And Stories In Discourse About Personal And Social Change, L. David Ritchie Jan 2012

Metaphor And Stories In Discourse About Personal And Social Change, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Barack Obama campaigned on the theme of ‘change,’ and as the first African-American to win the U. S. Presidency, he embodies changes of historical and cultural importance. Central among the changes Obama advocates is his attempt, throughout his campaign, to depart from the ‘old politics’ and keep racial issues in the background. However, at a crucial point in the campaign he was forced to confront these issues when a potentially damaging controversy erupted over a series of comments, widely regarded as unpatriotic, made by his personal friend and spiritual adviser, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. How Obama dealt with this crisis …

Marps Sensitization: A Diversity Training Guide For Health Care Providers In Nigeria, Enhancing Nigeria's Hiv/Aids Response (Enr) Programme Jan 2012

Marps Sensitization: A Diversity Training Guide For Health Care Providers In Nigeria, Enhancing Nigeria's Hiv/Aids Response (Enr) Programme

HIV and AIDS

Men who have sex with men (MSM) present specific diagnostic and management challenges to counselors and health-care providers. High prevalence of HIV infection has been reported among MSM in Nigeria, driven partly by stigma, discrimination, lack of appropriate prevention strategies, limited research evidence, little recognition by policymakers, and inadequate knowledge and skills in dealing with MSM clients. In Nigeria, where homosexuality is illegal, the risk embodied in same-sex activities is high and makes hiding MSM activities almost a norm. Currently, health-care provider training materials that address most at-risk populations’ (MARPs) specific health needs are nonexistent in Nigeria. Knowledge of these …

Surviving The Eco-Apocalypse: Losing The Natural World And The Self In Post-Apocalyptic And Dystopian Literature, Samantha Drake Jan 2012

Surviving The Eco-Apocalypse: Losing The Natural World And The Self In Post-Apocalyptic And Dystopian Literature, Samantha Drake

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis discusses the connection between humanity and the ecosystem as they relate to modern science-fiction/dystopian apocalypse fiction. It explores the increasingly popular trope of antagonism between humanity and the environment, explaining how humans become more alienated from themselves and the environment as they rely more heavily on artificial and technological pursuits. The eco-apocalypse is discussed as a literary theme which warns about the consequences of environmental destruction and how it relates to the destruction and renewal of humanity itself.

Field Performance Evaluation Of A Ventilation System: A Swine Case Study, Jay D. Harmon, Michael C. Brumm, Larry D. Jacobson, Stephen H. Pohl, David R. Stender, Richard R. Stowell Jan 2012

Field Performance Evaluation Of A Ventilation System: A Swine Case Study, Jay D. Harmon, Michael C. Brumm, Larry D. Jacobson, Stephen H. Pohl, David R. Stender, Richard R. Stowell

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Swine finishing facility ventilation has become relatively complex and is often mismanaged as a system. One of the few ways to truly understand these systems is to spend time systematically going through the many components of the building and how they work as a system. To learn to help producers better, a team of university Extension specialists that included agricultural engineers and animal scientists spent an extended period carefully documenting conditions in a deep‐pit swine finishing building with two 1,000‐head rooms. Exhaust fans connected to the manure pit and wall fans were operated at various stages as a negative‐pressure ventilation …

Cavity Ring Down: Construction, Validation And Experiments Measuring The Optical Extinction Of Pure Clays And Their Mixtures With Salts And Carboxylic Acids Under A Range Of Atmospherically Relevant Conditions, Alexis Rae Attwood

Doctoral Dissertations

Aerosols interact directly with solar radiation by scattering and absorbing incident light to affect the Earth's climate system. Models indicate that aerosols cool the Earth counterbalancing greenhouse gases, but contribute the largest uncertainty to anthropogenic effects on climate. To address these uncertainties, a cavity ring down spectrometer (CRD) was built and performance tests were conducted to validate its capabilities for measuring optical properties of laboratory generated, atmospherically relevant aerosols over a range of conditions. The CRD provides an absolute and unbiased in situ measurement of total extinction and can reduce uncertainties associated with aerosols having unusual chemical and physical properties. …

The Impact Of Seasonal Movements By Ovigerous American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) On Egg Development And Larval Release, Jason Seth Goldstein Jan 2012

The Impact Of Seasonal Movements By Ovigerous American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) On Egg Development And Larval Release, Jason Seth Goldstein

Doctoral Dissertations

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) supports one of the most economically successful fisheries in the Gulf of Maine. The continued success of this fishery is attributed in part to vigilant broodstock conservation through the preservation of ovigerous (egg-bearing) females. Previous studies of ovigerous lobster movements indicate that some, if not most, display seasonal inshore-to-offshore movement patterns. While it has been assumed that these movements serve to expose eggs to thermal regimes that are optimal for development, this theory has never been rigorously tested. In Chapter 1, I present results from ultrasonic tracking studies designed to determine if lobsters in coastal …
