Effect Of Amount And Timing Of Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Corn Yield, Simon J. Van Donk, James L. Petersen, Don R. Davison

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

A field study was conducted at North Platte, Nebraska in 2007–2009, imposing eight irrigation treatments, ranging from dryland to fully irrigated. Four of the eight treatments allowed for various degrees of water stress only after tasseling and silking. In 2007, corn yield ranged from 8.9 Mg ha−1 with a season total of 41 mm of irrigation water to 11.5 Mg ha−1 for the fully irrigated treatment (264 mm of irrigation water). The treatment with the greatest reduction in irrigation water after tasseling and silking (158 mm) had a mean yield of 10.9 Mg ha−1, only 0.6 …

Reconsideration Of In-Silico Sirna Design Based On Feature Selection: A Cross-Platform Data Integration Perspective, Qi Liu, Han Zhou, Juan Cui, Zhiewi Cao, Ying Xu

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

RNA interference via exogenous short interference RNAs (siRNA) is increasingly more widely employed as a tool in gene function studies, drug target discovery and disease treatment. Currently there is a strong need for rational siRNA design to achieve more reliable and specific gene silencing; and to keep up with the increasing needs for a wider range of applications. While progress has been made in the ability to design siRNAs with specific targets, we are clearly at an infancy stage towards achieving rational design of siRNAs with high efficacy. Among the many obstacles to overcome, lack of general understanding of what …

A Comparative Study Of Gene-Expression Data Of Basal Cell Carcinoma And Melanoma Reveals New Insights About The Two Cancers, Kun Xu, Xizeng Mao, Minesh Mehta, Juan Cui, Chi Zhang, Ying Xu

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

A comparative analysis of genome-scale transcriptomic data of two types of skin cancers, melanoma and basal cell carcinoma in comparison with other cancer types, was conducted with the aim of identifying key regulatory factors that either cause or contribute to the aggressiveness of melanoma, while basal cell carcinoma generally remains a mild disease. Multiple cancer-related pathways such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, cell invasion and metastasis, are considered, but our focus is on energy metabolism, cell invasion and metastasis pathways. Our findings include the following. (a) Both types of skin cancers use both glycolysis and increased oxidative phosphorylation (electron transfer …

Tridimensional Regression For Comparing And Mapping 3d Anatomical Structures, Kendra K. Schmid

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Shape analysis is useful for a wide variety of disciplines and has many applications. There are many approaches to shape analysis, one of which focuses on the analysis of shapes that are represented by the coordinates of predefined landmarks on the object. This paper discusses Tridimensional Regression, a technique that can be used for mapping images and shapes that are represented by sets of three-dimensional landmark coordinates, for comparing and mapping 3D anatomical structures. The degree of similarity between shapes can be quantified using the tridimensional coefficient of determination (R2). An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this …

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joseph Naimo Jan 2012

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joseph Naimo

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

When examining the human being as a conscious being, we are still to arrive at an understanding of, firstly, the conditions required whereby physical processes give rise to consciousness and secondly, how consciousness is something fundamental to life as an intrinsic part of nature. Humans are complex organisms with myriad interacting systems whereby the convergence of the activities toward the support and development of the whole organism requires a high level of organisation. Though what accounts for the dynamic unity of the human being? From an empirical perspective the question remains unanswered. The aim of this paper is to conceptually …

Creativity, Fragments Of The History Of An Idea, Camilla Nelson Jan 2012

Creativity, Fragments Of The History Of An Idea, Camilla Nelson

Arts Conference Papers

It is frequently maintained that creativity is a desirable and wholly positive attribute — implicit in such a claim is the idea that creativity is also an ideologically neutral attribute. Creativity is regularly understood to exist beyond ideology and politics, and more significantly, perhaps, beyond history. For this reason, cultural histories of the creative idea commonly take a substantialist approach to their object of study — in that they take as their starting point an idea of creativity as a fixed or substantial reality that exists outside and beyond the historical field. The manifold possibilities of history are therefore reduced …

Early Events In Herpes Simplex Virus Lifecycle With Implications For An Infection Of Lifetime, Sarah Salameh '12, Urmi Sheth '12, Deepak Shukla Jan 2012

Early Events In Herpes Simplex Virus Lifecycle With Implications For An Infection Of Lifetime, Sarah Salameh '12, Urmi Sheth '12, Deepak Shukla

Student Publications & Research

Affecting a large percentage of human population herpes simplex virus (HSV) types -1 and -2 mainly cause oral, ocular, and genital diseases. Infection begins with viral entry into a host cell, which may be preceded by viral “surfing” along filopodia. Viral glycoproteins then bind to one or more of several cell surface receptors, such as herpesvirus entry mediator (HVEM), nectin-1, 3-O sulfated heparan sulfate (3-OS HS), paired immunoglobulin-like receptor, and non-muscle myosin-IIA. At least five viral envelope glycoproteins participate in entry and these include gB, gC, gD and gH-gL. Post-entry, these glycoproteins may also facilitate cell-to-cell spread of the virus, …

Pulmonary And Peritoneal Tuberculosis Associated With Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Inhibitor Use: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Niharika Tipirneni, Marc O. Siegel

Medicine Faculty Publications

The association between the use of tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors and the increased risk of granulomatous infections, especially tuberculosis, has been well documented. Given the rapidly expanding list of inflammatory conditions for which tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors are receiving FDA approval, the incidence of tuberculosis in this patient population has increased. Despite heightened awareness by physicians, the diagnosis of tuberculosis can remain challenging, given that extrapulmonary sites of infection are more frequently involved. We present a case of pulmonary and peritoneal tuberculosis in a gentleman being treated with a tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor and discuss the diagnostic challenges of establishing …

Welcome To The Wild West: Protecting Access To Cross Border Fertility Care In The United States, Kimberly M. Mutcherson Jan 2012

Welcome To The Wild West: Protecting Access To Cross Border Fertility Care In The United States, Kimberly M. Mutcherson

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

As has been the case with other types of medical tourism, the phenomenon of cross border fertility care ("CBFC") has sparked concern about the lack of global or even national harmonization in the regulation of the fertility industry. The diversity of laws around the globe leads would-be parents to forum shop for a welcoming place to make babies. Focusing specifically on the phenomenon of travel to the United States, this Article takes up the question of whether there should be any legal barriers to those who come to the United States seeking CBFC. In part, CBFC suffers from the same …

Testing Phylogenetic Hypotheses Of The Subgenera Of The Freshwater Crayfish Genus Cambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae)., Jesse W Breinholt, Megan L Porter, Keith A Crandall

Computational Biology Institute

BACKGROUND: The genus Cambarus is one of three most species rich crayfish genera in the Northern Hemisphere. The genus has its center of diversity in the Southern Appalachians of the United States and has been divided into 12 subgenera. Using Cambarus we test the correspondence of subgeneric designations based on morphology used in traditional crayfish taxonomy to the underlying evolutionary history for these crayfish. We further test for significant correlation and explanatory power of geographic distance, taxonomic model, and a habitat model to estimated phylogenetic distance with multiple variable regression.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We use three mitochondrial and one nuclear gene …

A Genomic Island In Salmonella Enterica Ssp. Salamae Provides New Insights On The Genealogy Of The Locus Of Enterocyte Effacement., P Scott Chandry, Simon Gladman, Sean C Moore, Torsten Seemann, Keith A Crandall, Narelle Fegan

Computational Biology Institute

The genomic island encoding the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) is an important virulence factor of the human pathogenic Escherichia coli. LEE typically encodes a type III secretion system (T3SS) and secreted effectors capable of forming attaching and effacing lesions. Although prominent in the pathogenic E. coli such as serotype O157:H7, LEE has also been detected in Citrobacter rodentium, E. albertii, and although not confirmed, it is likely to also be in Shigella boydii. Previous phylogenetic analysis of LEE indicated the genomic island was evolving through stepwise acquisition of various components. This study describes a new LEE region from two …

Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And Sleep Variables: Results From The National Health And Nutrition Survey 2005–2008, R Constance Wiener

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Sleep disordered breathing as well as high serum uric acid levels are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, studies evaluating the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and hyperuricemia are limited. We examined the 2005–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination survey's sleep variables and high serum uric acid among 6491 participants aged ≥ 2 0 years. The sleep variables included sleep duration, snoring, snorting, and daytime sleepiness. The main outcome was high serum uric acid level, defined as levels of serum uric acid > 6 . 8 mg/dL in males and > 6 . 0 mg/dL in females. We found that snoring more …

The Impact Of New Media On Intercultural Communication In Global Context, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2012

The Impact Of New Media On Intercultural Communication In Global Context, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The rapid development of new media has been the main force accelerating the trend of globalization in human society in recent decades. New media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level, but at the same time challenges the very existence of intercultural communication in its traditional sense. It is under this circumstance that we see more and more scholars becoming involved in the investigation of the relationship between new media and intercultural communication. Emerging topical areas in this line of research mainly include three categories: (1) the impact of national/ethnic culture on the development …

Severe Diabetes And Leptin Resistance Cause Differential Hepatic And Renal Transporter Expression In Mice, Vijay More, Xia Wen, Paul E. Thomas, Lauren M. Aleksunes, Angela L. Slitt

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Type-2 Diabetes is a major health concern in the United States and other Westernized countries, with prevalence increasing yearly. There is a need to better model and predict adverse drug reactions, drug-induced liver injury, and drug efficacy in this population. Because transporters significantly contribute to drug clearance and disposition, it is highly significant to determine whether a severe diabetes phenotype alters drug transporter expression, and whether diabetic mouse models have altered disposition of acetaminophen (APAP) metabolites.

Results:

Transporter mRNA and protein expression were quantified in livers and kidneys of adult C57BKS and db/db mice, which have a …

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing

Overview: Since childhood, most human beings have been raised on the foundation of accepting and adhering to the “Golden Rule” in everyday aspects of life. We have grown to appreciate the idea that one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reports that more than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests; lab experimentations and lessons in the sciences; medical training exercises; and curiosity-driven medical experiments. Why do human beings sit back and do nothing, knowing that these …
