Understanding Floristic Diversity Though A Database Of Greene County Specimens, K. M. Harris, M. B. Foard, T. D. Marsico Jan 2012

Understanding Floristic Diversity Though A Database Of Greene County Specimens, K. M. Harris, M. B. Foard, T. D. Marsico

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We present a floristic list of Greene County, Arkansas, based on accessioned collections from the Arkansas State University Herbarium (STAR). Currently, there are 1569 specimens representing 540 taxa from Greene County in STAR. Using the USDA Plants Database, plant species were analyzed according to whether or not they are native to the state as well as whether or not they have been previously documented as species occurring in the county. Having analyzed all the Greene County collections from STAR, we found 225 previously undocumented species. The data suggest that most of the specimens in the STAR collection were found in …

Working Trees For Water Quality Jan 2012

Working Trees For Water Quality

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Water is a precious national resource. Often, human activities degrade the quality of the water in the streams, lakes, estuaries, wetlands, and aquifiers on which we depend. Pollutants from agricultural and urban sources have made many of our waters unsuitable for swimming and fishing. Excessive sedimentation, pesticides, and fertilizers are harming fish and other aquatic life. Changes in land use also have had a dramatic effect on floodwater damage and frequency. Both surface and subsurface drinking water supplies are being impacted by human activities.

Water quality is the end result of the individual actions of all the “neighbors” in a …

Design And Experimental Validation Of Continuous Dna Separation Using Itp-Based Microfluidic Device, Nora C. M. Goscinski, Mary E. Rosa, Elizabeth K. Wheeler, Maxim Shusteff Jan 2012

Design And Experimental Validation Of Continuous Dna Separation Using Itp-Based Microfluidic Device, Nora C. M. Goscinski, Mary E. Rosa, Elizabeth K. Wheeler, Maxim Shusteff

Chemistry and Biochemistry

We have demonstrated a chip-based microfluidic device suitable for rapid and high-throughput DNA separation and purification for downstream analysis. The glass-based device incorporates a transverse free-flow isotachophoresis (tFF-ITP) that overcomes the volume limitations of CE approaches, and allows continuous sample processing in contrast to batch-mode solid-phase extraction (SPE). The device is able to focus DNA at flow rates up to 100 uL/min, and sample conductivity up to 2 mS/cm. Downstream of the chip, 30-40% of DNA from the input sample is recovered as a result of ITP focusing, and preliminary results indicate that this design is able to purify DNA …

Β-Casein–Phospholipid Monolayers As Model Systems To Understand Lipid–Protein Interactions In The Milk Fat Globule Membrane, Sophie Gallier, Derek E. Gragson, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, David W. Everett Jan 2012

Β-Casein–Phospholipid Monolayers As Model Systems To Understand Lipid–Protein Interactions In The Milk Fat Globule Membrane, Sophie Gallier, Derek E. Gragson, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, David W. Everett

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Phospholipid–protein monolayer films were studied as model systems to mimic the structure of the native bovine milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) and to understand lipid–protein interactions at the surface of the globule. Phospholipids extracted from bovine raw milk, raw cream, processed milk and buttermilk powder were spread onto the air–water interface of a Langmuir trough, β-casein was then added to the sub-phase, and Langmuir–Blodgett films were studied by epifluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In all films, β-casein was responsible for clustering of the sphingomyelin- and cholesterol-rich microdomains into larger platforms. This suggests that the same phenomenon may happen at …

Policies are arising around the world, most recently in the United States, that mandate the implementation of marine spatial planning as a practical pathway towards ecosystem-based management. In the new United States ocean policy, and several other cases around the globe, ecosystem services are at the core of marine spatial planning, but there is little guidance on how ecosystem services should be measured, making it hard to implement this new approach. A new framework is shown here for practical, rigorous ecosystem service measurement that highlights contributions from both natural and social systems. The novel three-step framework addresses traditional shortcomings of …

On The Design Of Advanced Filters For Biological Networks Using Graph Theoretic Properties, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Tzu-Yi Chen, Sanjukta Bhowmick, Hesham Ali

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Network modeling of biological systems is a powerful tool for analysis of high-throughput datasets by computational systems biologists. Integration of networks to form a heterogeneous model requires that each network be as noise-free as possible while still containing relevant biological information. In earlier work, we have shown that the graph theoretic properties of gene correlation networks can be used to highlight and maintain important structures such as high degree nodes, clusters, and critical links between sparse network branches while reducing noise. In this paper, we propose the design of advanced network filters using structurally related graph theoretic properties. While spanning …

Mycorrhizal Colonization Of Hypericum Perforatum L. (Hypericaceae) From Serpentine And Granite Outcrops On The Deer Isles, Maine, Naveed Davoodian, Jason Bosworth, Nishanta Rajakaruna

Biological Sciences

Given the paucity of literature on plant-fungal interactions on serpentine soils and limited investigation of serpentine geoecology in eastern North America, we examined mycorrhizal colonization of Hypericum perforatum from adjacent serpentine and granite outcrops on the Deer Isles, ME to determine whether plants were differentially colonized based on substrate. We coincided our sampling with three phenologic stages of H. perforatum (preflowering, flowering, postflowering) to determine possible differences in colonization based on plant phenology. The levels of mycorrhizal colonization in H. perforatum were not significantly different between serpentine and granite sites, while levels of colonization in postflowering plants were significantly higher …

A Collaborative Approach To Investigate Site Fidelity, Home Range, And Homing Behavior Of Cabezon (Scorpaenichthys Marmoratus), Carlos Mireles, Royden Nakamura, Dean Wendt

Biological Sciences

Understanding the area use requirements of species targeted for protection by marine protected areas (MPAs) is critical to the future conservation efforts of economically important fish species. Knowledge of home range size and site fidelity is essential in determining whether species will benefit from the protection offered by a MPA, the size of the area needed to protect individuals, and the extent to which surrounding unprotected areas may be supplemented through post-recruitment movement or “spillover”. We utilized a traditional mark and recapture approach, along with GIS spatial analysis to investigate the site fidelity, home range, and homing behavior of the …

Receptor Chimeras Demonstrate That The C-Terminal Domain Of The Human Cytomegalovirus Us27 Gene Product Is Necessary And Sufficient For Intracellular Receptor Localization, Lance K. Stapleton, Kathleen L. Arnolds, Angela P. Lares, Tori M. Devito, Juliet V. Spencer

Biology Faculty Publications

Background

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is ubiquitous in the population but generally causes only mild or asymptomatic infection except in immune suppressed individuals. HCMV employs numerous strategies for manipulating infected cells, including mimicry of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). The HCMV US27 gene product is a putative GPCR, yet no ligand or signaling has been identified for this receptor. In the present study, immunofluorescence microscopy was used to examine the cellular distribution of wild type US27, as well as US27 deletion mutants and chimeric receptors.

Results

In transiently transfected cells, wild type US27 was found primarily in intracellular compartments, in striking contrast …

Papers From The 4th International Conference On Public Management In The 21st Century: Opportunities And Challenges, Dale Krane, Zhikui Lu

Faculty Books and Monographs

Paper, "The Attractions and Challenges of Collaborative Public Management," co-written by Dale Krane, UNO faculty member.

Solutions to problems confronting public officials increasingly require the creation of collaborative arrangements not only among public agencies, horizontally and vertically, but also with nonprofit organizations and/or for-profit enterprises. This shift to collaborative public management is propelled by claims it will remedy the pathologies associated with hierarchical bureaucracies, inter-jurisdictional conflicts, increased problem complexity, resource deficiencies, and lack of citizen participation in policy decisions. This paper reviews the emergence of the movement toward collaborative public management, the efforts to conceptualize and model collaboration, and the …

Exploring The Cultural Origins Of Differences In Time Orientation Between European New Zealanders And Māori, Kevin D. Lo, Carla Houkamau Jan 2012

Exploring The Cultural Origins Of Differences In Time Orientation Between European New Zealanders And Māori, Kevin D. Lo, Carla Houkamau

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

Previous research suggests that time orientation differs as a function of national culture. National cultures often cluster together by region, thus regional generalizations can provide insights on how cultures in a given cluster perceive time. We consider the unique case of bi-cultural New Zealand with two cultures, the European New Zealanders (Pākehā) and the indigenous Māori from historically contrasting temporal clusters: Anglo-American and South Pacific. To demonstrate the ways in which Pākehā and Māori differ in their perspectives on time orientation we take our analysis beyond the basic generalizations based on regional clusters and consider the cultural roots of Māori …

Kinetic Models Of The Prebiotic Replication Of Dsrna Under Thermal Cycling Conditions, Pauline Schwartz, Dante M. Lepore, Carl Barratt Jan 2012

Kinetic Models Of The Prebiotic Replication Of Dsrna Under Thermal Cycling Conditions, Pauline Schwartz, Dante M. Lepore, Carl Barratt

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present computational models for the replication of double stranded RNA (dsRNA) or related macromolecules under thermal cycling conditions that would reflect prebiotic (i.e. non-enzymatic) environments. Two models of the replication of dsRNA are represented as multi-step chemical systems. The objective of this investigation was to better understand the kinetic features of such chemical systems. It is shown that thermal cycling in a chemical system is advantageous (relative to a fixed temperature) if there are two competing reactions, one favored at high temperature and one favored at low temperature. For the prebiotic replication of dsRNA, a high temperature favors formation …

Service Life Prediction Of Residential Interior Finishes For Life Cycle Assessment, Can B. Aktas Ph.D. Jan 2012

Service Life Prediction Of Residential Interior Finishes For Life Cycle Assessment, Can B. Aktas Ph.D.

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Service life of building products has an important influence on life cycle assessment (LCA) results of buildings. The goal of this study was to propose a systematic approach to estimate service life of building products by including both technical and social factors. A hybrid service life prediction method, combining the statistical approach described in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard G166, with the Factor Method adopted by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 15686 was proposed. In their current forms, the two methods are not suitable to provide accurate lifetime estimates for the wide variety of products that …

Contributions Of Various Noncovalent Bonds To The Interaction Between An Amide And S-Containing Molecules, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner Jan 2012

Contributions Of Various Noncovalent Bonds To The Interaction Between An Amide And S-Containing Molecules, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

N-Methylacetamide, a model of the peptide unit in proteins, is allowed to interact with CH3SH, CH3SCH3, and CH3SSCH3 as models of S-containing amino acid residues. All of the minima are located on the ab initio potential energy surface of each heterodimer. Analysis of the forces holding each complex together identifies a variety of different attractive forces, including SH⋅⋅⋅O, NH⋅⋅⋅S, CH⋅⋅⋅O, CH⋅⋅⋅S, SH⋅⋅⋅π, and CH⋅⋅⋅π H-bonds. Other contributing noncovalent bonds involve charge transfer into σ* and π* antibonds. Whereas some of the H-bonds are strong enough that they represent the sole attractive force in several dimers, albeit not usually in the …

Direct infusion electrospray ionization triple quadrupole precursor scanning for three oxidized fatty acyl anions revealed 86 mass spectral peaks representing polar membrane lipids in extracts from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000 expressing AvrRpt2 (PstAvr). Quadrupole time-of-flight and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry provided evidence for the presence of membrane lipids containing one or more oxidized acyl chains. The membrane lipids included molecular species of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, and acylated monogalactosyldiacylglycerol. The oxidized chains were identified at the level of chemical formula and included C(18)H(27)O(3) (abbreviated 18:4-O, to indicate four double bond …
