The Value Of The Curriculum Center's Mission Statement: Meeting The Needs Of Evolving Teacher Education, Julie L. Miller, Nadean Meyer Jan 2012

The Value Of The Curriculum Center's Mission Statement: Meeting The Needs Of Evolving Teacher Education, Julie L. Miller, Nadean Meyer

Scholarship and Professional Work

This chapter explores the value of creating a mission statement to help redefine the academic library's curriculum center in the context of the current dynamic teacher education environment. The mission statement and related texts, such as vision, values, and guiding principle statements, define the purpose of the center for its constituents. It acts as a bridge between communities of practice and organizations, demonstrating the relationship of the center to the teacher education program, the academic library, and the college or university. Most importantly, the mission statement provides guidance for making policy and procedure decisions that are proactive. In an evolving …

How Do Mentors And Protégés Choose Each Other? The Influence Of Benevolence, Ocb, And Pos On The Initiation Of Mentoring Relationships, Mkhelle M. Fleig-Palmer, Janet L. Lear, David K. Palmer, Tiffani Luethke Jan 2012

How Do Mentors And Protégés Choose Each Other? The Influence Of Benevolence, Ocb, And Pos On The Initiation Of Mentoring Relationships, Mkhelle M. Fleig-Palmer, Janet L. Lear, David K. Palmer, Tiffani Luethke

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Mentoring relationships play a critical role in career and organizational success yet little research has explored how mentors and protégés choose each other before beginning a productive mentoring relationship. We integrate the selection and trust literatures to describe a mentor's and a protégé's evaluation of each other before initiating a mentoring relationship. Our conceptual framework distinguishes between a mentor and a protégé in their assessments of the other's potential for organizational citizenship behaviors and perceived organizational support, respectively, and how those assessments are contingent upon perceptions of benevolence. We conclude by outlining the implications of this conceptual model for effective …

Back To Freedom: From Surviving To Thriving An Introduction, Ana I. Vallejo Jan 2012

Back To Freedom: From Surviving To Thriving An Introduction, Ana I. Vallejo

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

Trafficked persons, even before they are tricked, coerced or forced into domestic servitude generally come from vulnerable and/or disadvantaged groups consisting primarily, though not exclusively, of women and children. Kevin Hsu observes that historically, domestic servants and victims of domestic servitude in the United States tend to come from poor and marginalized groups, and that their day-to-day relations with their 'master' is one of "dependence and subjection, of discipline, governance, and control.".The economic relation of subordination is commonly reinforced by social or sub-cultural mores, which hold trafficked persons responsible, and even grateful to the trafficker, despite the fact that the …

Fabrication And Testing Of Hierarchical Carbon Nanostructures For Multifunctional Applications, Ian Timothy Barney Jan 2012

Fabrication And Testing Of Hierarchical Carbon Nanostructures For Multifunctional Applications, Ian Timothy Barney

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Multi-scale hierarchical carbon structures have been developed by growing strongly attached carbon nanotubes (CNT) on high surface area substrates having open, interconnected porosity. This investigation was developed on cellular carbon foams but the process is equally suitable for other geometries including flat, fibers, and other porous substrates (interconnected). It is also adaptable to other substrate materials such as metals, alloys or ceramic compounds. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes are grown using a floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method after pre-coating the substrate with a silica nano-layer. The silica-coated graphitic substrates are seen to grow 280 times more nanotubes per unit area …

The Journal’S The Thing: Teaching Natural History And Nature Writing In Baja California Sur, John S. Farnsworth, Christopher Beatty

Environmental Studies and Sciences

The skills of making informed observations, synthesizing those observations, and communicating them effectively are central to the naturalist. Developing university courses that optimize instruction in these skills simultaneously can, however, be a challenge. Here we describe a program at Santa Clara University comprised of two integrated co-requisite courses, Writing Natural History (ENVS 142) and The Natural History of Baja (BIOL/ENVS 144). Lectures through the 10-week winter quarter expand students’ knowledge of the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Baja Peninsula and help them to develop descriptive writing skills. The courses culminate in a ten-day expedition to the Baja Peninsula and Isla …

Global Health Impact: A Basis For Labeling And Licensing Campaigns?, Nicole Hassoun

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Most of the world's health problems afflict poor countries and their poorest inhabitants. There are many reasons why so many people die of poverty-related causes. One reason is that the poor cannot access many of the existing drugs and technologies they need. Another, is that little of the research and development (R&D) done on new drugs and technologies benefits the poor. There are several proposals on the table that might incentivize pharmaceutical companies to extend access to essential drugs and technologies to the global poor.1 Still, the problem remains – the poor are suffering and dying from lack of …

Breeding Biology And Incremental Benefits Of Outcrossing For The Restoration Wildflower, Hedysarum Boreale Nutt. (Fabaceae), Katharine A. Swoboda-Bhattarai, James H. Cane

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Northern sweetvetch (Hedysarum boreale Nutt.) is an herbaceous perennial legume of the Rocky Mountains, USA, whose seed is desired for rehabilitating degraded plant communities. Through experimental pollinations, the necessity of pollinators was shown by the failure of autogamy, despite stigmas first becoming receptive in the bud in close proximity to the dehiscing anthers. Nonetheless, the species proved to be self-fertile, initiating as many fruits through selfing as outcrossing. Incremental benefits of outcrossing only later manifested in superior fruit development, seed maturation and seed germination. Farming of H. boreale can yield abundant viable seed if adequately visited by pollinating bees.

Seed Biology Of Physaria Ludoviciana (Silvery Bladderpod; Brassicaceae ), An Endangered Species In Sand Prairies Of The Midwest, Marissa C. Grant, Ann E. Claerbout, Janice M. Coons, Henry R. Owen

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Physaria ludoviciana (Nuttal) O'Kane & Al-Shehbaz (silvery bladderpod) is a state endangered species in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, the eastern edge of its range. Our goal was to investigate its seed biology (production, dispersal, seed bank longevity, afterripening, seed longevity after storage using germination and emergence, and seedling establishment). This information will be useful for conservation efforts of this endangered species. Over a ten-year period, various seed biology parameters were measured. Infructescences were counted to estimate seed production with 110–744 seeds per reproductive plant. Soil samples were collected at various distances to estimate dispersal where seeds dispersed less than a …

Using Comparative Genomics For Inquiry-Based Learning To Dissect Virulence Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Yersinia Pestis, David Baumler, Lois Banta, Kai Hung, Jodi Schwarz, Eric Cabot, Jeremy Glasner, Nicole Perna

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Genomics and bioinformatics are topics of increasing interest in undergraduate biological science curricula. Many existing exercises focus on gene annotation and analysis of a single genome. In this paper, we present two educational modules designed to enable students to learn and apply fundamental concepts in comparative genomics using examples related to bacterial pathogenesis. Students first examine alignments of genomes of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains isolated from three food-poisoning outbreaks using the multiple-genome alignment tool Mauve. Students investigate conservation of virulence factors using the Mauve viewer and by browsing annotations available at the A Systematic Annotation Package for Community Analysis of …

Isolation And Characterization Of Galactinol Synthases From Hybrid Poplar, Faride Unda, Thomas Canam, Lindsay Preston, Shawn Mansfield

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The raffinose family of oligosaccharides (RFOs) serve as transport carbohydrates in the phloem, storage compounds in sink tissues, and putative biological agents to combat both abiotic and biotic stress in several plant species. To investigate further the functional roles of this class of compounds in trees, two cDNAs encoding galactinol synthase (GolS, EC 2.4.1.123), which catalyses the first step in the biosynthesis of RFOs, were identified and cloned from hybrid poplar (Populus alba3grandidentata). Phylogenetic analyses of the Populus GolS isoforms with other known GolS proteins suggested a putative role for these enzymes during biotic or abiotic stress in hybrid poplar. …

Size Assortment In Mixed-Species Groups Of Juvenile-Phase Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iserti) In The Bahamas, Paul Switzer, Daniel Quinn

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Striped parrotfish (Scarus iserti) often form heterospecific groups with other reef fishes. In this study, we examined the species and body size composition of these groups on reefs in The Bahamas. Groups averaged approximately 4 S. iserti and 2 associated species, with surgeonfish (Acanthurus chirurgus and A. bahianus), slippery dick (Halichoeres bivittatus), and bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum) as the most common associates. Fewer groups than expected had only 1 associate; groups with 3 or more associates were more common than expected. Both the S. iserti and associated species tended to be closely sizematched within a group, perhaps due to benefits …

Current Theories On The Human Sex Ratio, Yisroel Cofsky Jan 2012

Current Theories On The Human Sex Ratio, Yisroel Cofsky

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The human sex ratio is skewed toward males, and this is the subject of much research. A review of some of the theories currently available was conducted, searching and analyzing the current scientific literature. Suggestions to explain the ratio include unequal proportions of X and Y sperm, the effect of maternal diet, maternal testosterone levels, and the natural fluctuations in the consistency of the cervical mucus. Although the difference in X/Y sperm proportions does not adequately explain all the data, the other theories do seem to explain the greater percentage of male births. However, there is still not enough information …

T he following essay was presented on 3 August 2012 as “Of ‘Mormon Studies’ and Apologetics” at the conclusion of the an nual conference of the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR) in Sandy, Utah. It represents the first pub lic announcement and appearance of Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture, which had been founded only slightly more than a week earlier, on 26 July. In my view, that rapid launch was the near-miraculous product of selfless collaboration and devotion to a cause on the part of several people—notable among them David E. Bokovoy, Alison V. P.
