Perceptions Regarding The Michigan Merit Curriculum Reform Policy And Its Impact On Cte And Dual Enrollment In A Southeastern Michigan High School, Winifred L. Green

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Michigan joined Arkansas, Indiana, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Rhode Island in the high school reform effort. The Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC), mandated in 2006, contained a new set of statewide graduation requirements. This qualitative case study used focus group interviews to examine the perceptions of students, teachers, parents, and key administrators in a southeastern Michigan high school about the effects of the MMC on students’ performances and outcomes as they relate to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and dual enrollment, and about problems that emerged from the MMC. Five themes emerged from the data: Transparency and Communication for Dual Enrollment, Loss …

The Right Of Nonuse, Jan G. Laitos Jan 2012

The Right Of Nonuse, Jan G. Laitos

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The Right of Nonuse provides a fresh and remarkably different perspective on the real causes of the ills plaguing the world's resources and environment. It reexamines the very nature of nature, and from this new perspective, argues that what is needed is for humans to grant to natural resources a legal right to be left alone - a right of nonuse. In the process, it explores the following questions: Why do natural resources continue to be depleted and removed at an alarming rate? Why are species becoming extinct at a pace that may be unprecedented? Why does the environment continue …

Review Of The Rpt3 Genes Encoding Part Of The 26s Proteasome Associated With Loci Underlying Disease Resistance In Soybean, Shivani Malik, Sukesh Bhaumik, David A. Lightfoot Jan 2012

Review Of The Rpt3 Genes Encoding Part Of The 26s Proteasome Associated With Loci Underlying Disease Resistance In Soybean, Shivani Malik, Sukesh Bhaumik, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

The 26S proteasomal complex is a multifunctional proteolytic machinery of the cell. The proteasome plays role in myriad of cellular functions, which have been further diversified by its separable proteolytic and non-proteolytic sub-complexes. Protein quality control and turnover, cell cycle regulation, gene regulation and DNA repair are among the key processes controlled by the proteasome. Disease resistance in plants invokes changes in all the processes controlled by the 26S proteasome. In this review, the potential contribution of genes encoding the proteasome to disease resistance in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) was examined.

Craving And Quitting: An Exploration Of How Mindfulness Training May Help Smokers To Quit, Hani Elwafi Jan 2012

Craving And Quitting: An Exploration Of How Mindfulness Training May Help Smokers To Quit, Hani Elwafi

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Abstract

Authors: Hani M. Elwafi, Katie Witkiewitz, Sarah Mallik, Thomas Thornhill IV, Judson Alyn Brewer

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the world. A majority of smokers identify tobacco as harmful and express a desire to quit. Currently available treatments have shown only modest success, and abstinence rates remain low. Mindfulness Training (MT) shows promise as an effective treatment for smoking cessation, yet the mechanisms remain unclear. Craving has been shown to be a central component of the addictive process, and a strong predictor of smoking. MT is theorized to work by dismantling this addictive process …

Utility Of Apparent Diffusion Coefficients In The Evaluation Of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma, John Webster Gilbert Jan 2012

Utility Of Apparent Diffusion Coefficients In The Evaluation Of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma, John Webster Gilbert

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The characterization of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) via noninvasive imaging modalities is essential for early diagnosis and differentiation from other brain lesions. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), in which intensity of image contrast reflects diffusion of water molecules by Brownian motion, offers additional information beyond that obtained from conventional MRI. In this retrospective study from two institutions, quantitative region of interest (ROI) analysis was performed using parametric apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps in immunocompetent patients with newly diagnosed PCNSL prior to corticosteroid use or other therapy. Mean ADC values and ratios were calculated for PCNSL lesions, peritumoral edema, …

Tissue-Engineered Vascular Grafts Allow Neovessel Formation By Recruiting Adjacent Vascular Tissue, Adam Shoffner Jan 2012

Tissue-Engineered Vascular Grafts Allow Neovessel Formation By Recruiting Adjacent Vascular Tissue, Adam Shoffner

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Hypothesis: Tissue Engineered Vascular Grafts (TEVGs) constructed by seeding cells autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells onto dissolvable scaffolding aid in the recruitment of cells from either the host's bone marrow or neighboring vasculature to form the graft neotissue.

Methods: RT-PCR was performed on explanted grafts to detect presence of seeded cells. FISH for Y chromosome was performed on female mice with male bone marrow transplant along with female mice with implanted male-composite TEVG.

Results: The seeded cells on implanted TEVGs decrease precipitously from 4.37% to 0.02% from 6hr to 14 days. At 6 months post implantation composite graft TEVGs displayed …

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of Cav1.3 Over-Expressing Mice, Jamie Nicole Slater Jan 2012

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of Cav1.3 Over-Expressing Mice, Jamie Nicole Slater

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Age-related cognitive decline refers to the memory impairment and difficulty learning new tasks that occurs during the normal process of aging. There are many possible changes that occur at the neuronal level that could account for age-related cognitive decline. One hypothesis suggests that a dysregulation of neuronal intracellular calcium concentration contributes to age-related cognitive deficits. Previous research suggests that an increase in neuronal L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (LVGCCs) occurs in the brain during aging. This increase could account for altered intracellular calcium concentration and lead to agerelated cognitive decline. A line of transgenic mice that over-express the LVGCC CaV …

Breeding-Site Selection By Ferruginous Hawks Within Utah’S Uintah Basin, Heather L. Keough, Michael R. Conover Jan 2012

Breeding-Site Selection By Ferruginous Hawks Within Utah’S Uintah Basin, Heather L. Keough, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We examined factors that might influence breeding-site selection in Ferruginous Hawks (Buteo regalis) in the Uintah Basin, Utah, an area undergoing rapid oil and gas development. We located 31 occupied nests of Ferruginous Hawk (10 during 2002, 10 during 2003, and 11 during 2004) and compared them to 32 historical nest sites of Ferruginous Hawks that were unoccupied during our study, and 32 random sites. Ferruginous Hawks selected nesting areas that were dominated by mixed desert-shrub vegetation communities with scattered Utah juniper trees (Juniperus osteosperma), higher prey abundance, and a high number of active petroleum wells. …

Little Evidence For Local Adaptation To Soils Or Microclimate In The Postfire Recruitment Of Three Californian Shrubs, A Bieger, N Rajakaruna, S P. Harrison Jan 2012

Little Evidence For Local Adaptation To Soils Or Microclimate In The Postfire Recruitment Of Three Californian Shrubs, A Bieger, N Rajakaruna, S P. Harrison

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Background: Seedling recruitment following fire is an infrequent yet critical demographic transition for woody plants in Mediterranean ecosystems. Aims: Here we examine whether post-fire seedling recruitment of three widespread Californian chaparral shrubs is affected by local adaptation within an edaphically and topographically complex landscape. Methods: We reciprocally transplanted 6-month-old seedlings of Adenostema fasciculatum, Ceanothus cuneatus and Eriodictyon californicum to serpentine and sandstone soils, and cool northerly and warm southerly slopes. Results: At the age of 2 years, none of the species manifested higher survival or growth on ‘home’ compared with ‘away’ soils or slopes, indicating an absence of local adaptation …

Edaphic Adaptation Maintains The Coexistence Of Two Cryptic Species On Serpentine Soil, J M. Yost, T Barry, K M. Kay, N Rajakaruna Jan 2012

Edaphic Adaptation Maintains The Coexistence Of Two Cryptic Species On Serpentine Soil, J M. Yost, T Barry, K M. Kay, N Rajakaruna

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

• Premise of the study: Divergent edaphic adaptation can contribute to reproductive isolation and coexistence between closely related species, yet we know little about how small-scale continuous edaphic gradients contribute to this phenomenon. We investigated edaphic adaptation between two cryptic species of California wildflower, Lasthenia californica and L. gracilis (Asteraceae), which grow in close parapatry on serpentine soil. • Methods: We reciprocally transplanted both species into the center of each species’ habitat and the transition zone between species. We quantified multiple components of fitness and used aster models to predict fitness based on environmental variables. We sampled soil across the …

Apopo Annual Report 2012, Apopo Jan 2012

Apopo Annual Report 2012, Apopo

Global CWD Repository

In 2012, APOPO’s Mine Action Mozambique program delivered beyond set requirements and exceeded the expectations of the country’s national demining authority. APOPO fi nished its work in the Gaza province and declared it free of known minefi elds a year ahead of the initial schedule of 2013. This excellent achievement was realized due to the successful expansion of the program’s capacity. During the handover ceremony, HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium commended the work in Gaza as “a shining example of how national priorities can be achieved with the right partnerships, sustained effort and, most importantly, sheer human intent”.

The focus …

A Study Of Prior Learning Assessment In Degree Completion, Jean Marie Chappell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of prior learning assessment (PLA) in postsecondary degree completion for adult community college students at Mountwest Community and Technical College (MCTC). The study group consisted of 339 MCTC graduates, who applied PLA credits toward degree completion between the academic year 2006 and 2011. A comparison group was comprised of 321 MCTC graduates from the same time period, who did not apply PLA toward degree completion. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis found statistically significant relationships between time to degree completion and the application of PLA from military credits and institutional …

Expansion Dating: Calibrating Molecular Clocks In Marine Species From Expansions Onto The Sunda Shelf Following The Last Glacial Maximum, Eric D. Crandall, Elizabeth J. Sbrocco, Timery S. Deboer, Paul H. Barber, Kent E. Carpenter

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The rate of change in DNA is an important parameter for understanding molecular evolution, and hence for inferences drawn from studies of phylogeography and phylogenetics. Most rate calibrations for mitochondrial coding regions in marine species have been made from divergence dating for fossils and vicariant events older than 1-2 million years, and are typically 0.5% - 2% per lineage per million years. Recently, calibrations made with ancient DNA from younger dates have yielded faster rates, suggesting that estimates of the molecular rate of change depend on the time of calibration, decaying from the instantaneous mutation rate to the phylogenetic substitution …

Coalescent And Biophysical Models Of Stepping-Stone Gene Flow In Neritid Snails, Eric D. Crandall, Eric A. Treml, Paul H. Barber Jan 2012

Coalescent And Biophysical Models Of Stepping-Stone Gene Flow In Neritid Snails, Eric D. Crandall, Eric A. Treml, Paul H. Barber

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Marine species in the Indo-Pacific have ranges that can span thousands of kilometers, yet studies increasingly suggest that mean larval dispersal distances are less than historically assumed. Gene flow across these ranges must therefore rely to some extent on larval dispersal among intermediate “stepping-stone” populations in combination with long-distance dispersal far beyond the mean of the dispersal kernel. We evaluate the strength of stepping-stone dynamics by employing a spatially explicit biophysical model of larval dispersal in the tropical Pacific to construct hypotheses for dispersal pathways. We evaluate these hypotheses with coalescent models of gene flow among high-island archipelagos in four …
