Stress And The Contextual Proximity Of Residential Factors, Rodrigo Cantarero, James Potter Jan 2012

Stress And The Contextual Proximity Of Residential Factors, Rodrigo Cantarero, James Potter

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Research is mounting showing the link between the built environment, well-being and health. We explored three factors: crowding, housing satisfaction, and neighborhood satisfaction to determine their correlation with housing stress, and in turn correlation with overall level of stress. A Simple Random Sample (SRS) of blocks was generated and a total of 180 residents were sampled. Correlation and regression models were used in the data analysis. Although a direct relationship between the residential environment and the overall level of stress was not found, we did find an indirect connection via stress from the struggle for a better house.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Occur In Common Spartina Species, Angela K. Burcham, Joy H. Merino, Thomas C. Michot, John A. Nyman Jan 2012

Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Occur In Common Spartina Species, Angela K. Burcham, Joy H. Merino, Thomas C. Michot, John A. Nyman

Gulf of Mexico Science

We report the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) in Spartina alterniflora Loisel roots. Roots were sampled for AM in field-collected and greenhouse-maintained Spartina patens (Aiton) Muhl. and S. alterniflora, the dominant species of Louisiana’s brackish and saline marshes, respectively. Previous reports of AM association in these Spartina sp. are limited and conflicting. Field-collected S. alterniflora had minimal AM (2.4%), whereas 39.5% of the S. patens roots examined were AM colonized. Greenhouse conditions of reduced salinity [3 parts per thousand (ppt)] appeared to increase AM association for S. patens compared with field samples. AM occurrence varied significantly among the three …

Sequencing Of The Rbcl Marker Reveals The Nonnative Red Alga Grateloupia Taiwanensis (Halymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) In Alabama, Michael S. Depriest, Juan M. López-Bautista Jan 2012

Sequencing Of The Rbcl Marker Reveals The Nonnative Red Alga Grateloupia Taiwanensis (Halymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) In Alabama, Michael S. Depriest, Juan M. López-Bautista

Gulf of Mexico Science

Mobile Bay, AL has been the site for the introduction of several terrestrial and freshwater invasive species, including red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) and spike-topped apple snails (Pomacea bridgesii). The Gulf of Mexico has also been invaded by several marine animal species, such as zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha). To date, no invasive marine macroalga has been reported in the Mobile Bay area. However, recent collections of an unusual species of Grateloupia (Halymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) in Alabama indicate that an introduction has been made. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of the large subunit of …

A Multi-Year Survey Of Meiofaunal Abundance From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Continental Shelf And Slope, Stephen C. Landers, Frank A. Romano Iii, Paul M. Stewart, Steve Ramroop

Gulf of Mexico Science

This 3-yr (2007–09) survey documented meiofauna abundance across the northern Gulf of Mexico on the continental shelf and slope from south Texas to south Florida. Sediment samples were collected from depths ranging from 29 to 509 m (average = 132 m) on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ship Gordon Gunter during the annual fall small pelagics fish-sampling cruise. A total of 259 sediment samples from 99 Shipek® grabs were analyzed. Meiofauna were isolated from the sediment by sieving (63-μm sieve) and concentrating the organisms via Ludox® centrifugation. Each year the two dominant animal groups were nematodes and …

Establishment Of The Invasive Island Apple Snail Pomacea Insularum (Gastropoda: Ampullaridae) And Eradication Efforts In Mobile, Alabama, Usa, Charles W. Martin, Keith M. Bahya, John F. Valentine Jan 2012

Establishment Of The Invasive Island Apple Snail Pomacea Insularum (Gastropoda: Ampullaridae) And Eradication Efforts In Mobile, Alabama, Usa, Charles W. Martin, Keith M. Bahya, John F. Valentine

Gulf of Mexico Science

Species invasions are thought to be among the most detrimental of all anthropogenic disturbances. Invasive consumers severely impact native ecosystems through the consumption of and competition with native species. Worldwide, snails of the Family Ampullaridae have successfully colonized a wide range of habitats outside their native range. This is of great ecological concern because once established, these snails frequently exhibit rampant herbivory in the recipient ecosystem. Here, we chronicle the recent invasion of island apple snails (Pomacea insularum; d’Orbigny 1837) in a tributary of the Mobile–Tensaw Delta, Alabama, in order to establish a baseline against which future assessments …

Design And Implementation Of Mobile Educational Games: Networks For Innovation, Rob Harrap, Sylvie Daniel, Michael Power, Joshua M. Pearce, Nicholas Hedley

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

Research networks foster creativity and break down institutional barriers, but introduce geographic barriers to communication and collaboration. In designing mobile educational games, our distributed team took advantage of diverse talent pools and differing perspectives to drive forward a core vision of our design targets. Our strategies included intense design workshops, use of online meeting rooms, group paper and software prototyping, and dissemination of prototypes to other teams for refinement and repurposing. Our group showed strong activity at the university-centered nodes with periods of highly effective dissemination between these nodes and to outside groups; we used workshop invitations to gather new …

Management Impacts On Carex Assiniboinensis And Cardamine Concatenata On The Ottawa National Forest, Margaret Fox Jan 2012

Management Impacts On Carex Assiniboinensis And Cardamine Concatenata On The Ottawa National Forest, Margaret Fox

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Monitoring of herbaceous plants on the Ottawa National Forest (ONF) is used to understand the impact of forest management on understory composition and site conditions. In their planning, national forests are required to take into account management impacts on diversity and ecosystem health. The effect of management on understory species is dependent on various factors, including the intensity of disturbance and the biology of the plant. In the first study in this report, a population of Carex assiniboinensis, a Michigan state threatened species, was monitored for seven seasons including before logging commenced, in order to determine the sedge’s response …

Treatment Of Osteoporosis In A Mouse Model Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Using Black Bear Parathyroid Hormone, Sarah K. Gray Jan 2012

Treatment Of Osteoporosis In A Mouse Model Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Using Black Bear Parathyroid Hormone, Sarah K. Gray

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive disease affecting skeletal and cardiac muscle, as well as bone. Long term disuse and glucocorticoid treatments cause progressive osteoporosis in DMD patients, leading to an increase in fracture incidence. Treatments for osteoporosis in these patients have not been widely explored. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), an anabolic treatment for post-menopausal osteoporosis, could benefit DMD patients by improving skeletal properties and reducing fracture risk. Other PTH analogues are not currently FDA approved to treat osteoporosis, but may have improved osteogenic effects compared to the human analogue. Black bear PTH is especially promising as an osteoporosis treatment …

False Ring Formation In Eastern Hemlock Branches: Impacts Of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid And Elongate Hemlock Scale, Liahna Gonda-King, Laura Radville, Evan L. Preisser Jan 2012

False Ring Formation In Eastern Hemlock Branches: Impacts Of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid And Elongate Hemlock Scale, Liahna Gonda-King, Laura Radville, Evan L. Preisser

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Herbivores can alter plant physiology through the induction of abnormal wood formation. Feeding by some insects induces the formation of false rings, a band of thick-walled latewood cells within the earlywood portion of the tree ring that reduces water transport. Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand) and elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa Ferris) are invasive insects that both feed on eastern hemlock [Tsuga canadensis (L.) CarriÈre]. Adelges tsugae has a greater effect on tree health than F. externa, but the mechanism underlying their differential effect is unknown. We explored the effects of these herbivores by assessing growth ring formation in …

Cognitive Approaches For The Semantic Web, Dedre Gentner, Frank Van Harmelen, Pascal Hitzler, Krzysztof Janowicz, Kai-Uwe Kuhnberger Jan 2012

Cognitive Approaches For The Semantic Web, Dedre Gentner, Frank Van Harmelen, Pascal Hitzler, Krzysztof Janowicz, Kai-Uwe Kuhnberger

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

A major focus in the design of Semantic Web ontology languages used to be on finding a suitable balance between the expressivity of the language and the tractability of reasoning services defined over this language. This focus mirrors the original vision of a Web composed of machine readable and understandable data. Similarly to the classical Web a few years ago, the attention is recently shifting towards a user-centric vision of the Semantic Web. Essentially, the information stored on the Web is from and for humans. This new focus is not only reflected in the fast growing Linked Data Web but …

Low Dose Nicotine And Antagonism Of Β2 Subunit Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Have Similar Effects On Affective Behavior In Mice, Shawn M. Anderson, Darlene H. Brunzell Jan 2012

Low Dose Nicotine And Antagonism Of Β2 Subunit Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Have Similar Effects On Affective Behavior In Mice, Shawn M. Anderson, Darlene H. Brunzell

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Nicotine leads to both activation and desensitization (inactivation) of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). This study tested the hypothesis that nicotine and a selective antagonist of β2*nAChRs would have similar effects on affective behavior. Adult C57BL/6J male mice were tested in a conditioned emotional response (CER) assay which evaluates the ability of an aversive stimulus to inhibit goal-directed behavior. Mice lever-pressed for a saccharin reinforcer according to a variable schedule of reinforcement during sessions in which two presentations of a compound light/tone conditioned stimulus (CS) co-terminated with a 0.1 or 0.3 mA, 0.5 s footshock unconditioned stimulus (US). During testing in …

Official Apologies, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jan 2012

Official Apologies, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

In favour of official apologies for past wrongs, one can argue that while guilt, or fault, is an attribute held by an individual only if she has actually committed a harmful act, responsibility is another matter. Membership in a corporate entity means the individual shares in the entity’s responsibility to ameliorate the consequences of injustices that it perpetrated. The corporate entity bears this moral responsibility even if its actions or lack of action were legal at the time they occurred. Moreover, the human dignity of those whom the entity has wronged is at stake, and overrides any damages to the …

State-Induced Famine And Penal Starvation In North Korea, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jan 2012

State-Induced Famine And Penal Starvation In North Korea, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article discusses North Korea as a case of state-induced famine, or faminogenesis. A famine from 1994 to 2000 killed 3–5% of North Korea’s population, and mass hunger reappeared in 2010–2012, despite reforms meant to address the shortage of food. In addition, a prison population of about 200,000 people is systematically deprived of food; this might be considered penal starvation. There seems little recourse under international law to punish the perpetrators of state-induced famine and penal starvation. State-induced famine does, however, fit some of the criteria of genocide in the United Nations Convention against Genocide, and could also be considered …
