Cognitive And Psychological Reactions Of The General Population Three Months After The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake And Tsunami, Yasushi Kyutoku, Ryoko Tada, Takahiko Umeyama, Kenji Harada, Senichiro Kikuchi, Eiju Watanabe, Angela Liegey-Dougall, Ippeita Dan Feb 2012

Cognitive And Psychological Reactions Of The General Population Three Months After The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake And Tsunami, Yasushi Kyutoku, Ryoko Tada, Takahiko Umeyama, Kenji Harada, Senichiro Kikuchi, Eiju Watanabe, Angela Liegey-Dougall, Ippeita Dan

Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive

Background The largest earthquake on record in Japan (magnitude 9.0) occurred on March 11, 2011, and the subsequent tsunami devastated the Pacific coast of Northern Japan. These further triggered the Fukushima I nuclear power plant accidents. Such a hugely complex disaster inevitably has negative psychological effects on general populations as well as on the direct victims. While previous disaster studies enrolled descriptive approaches focusing on direct victims, the structure of the psychological adjustment process of people from the general population has remained uncertain. The current study attempted to establish a path model that sufficiently reflects the early psychological adaptation process …

University Of South Florida St. Petersburg Student Research Journal, Vol. 1, Issue 1, Article 5 : Geometric Probability Of Mating Success For The Greater Short-Nosed Fruit Bat, Cynopterus Sphinx, Krista Ford, Leon Hardy, Deby L. Cassill Feb 2012

University Of South Florida St. Petersburg Student Research Journal, Vol. 1, Issue 1, Article 5 : Geometric Probability Of Mating Success For The Greater Short-Nosed Fruit Bat, Cynopterus Sphinx, Krista Ford, Leon Hardy, Deby L. Cassill

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

In the bat Cynopterus sphinx, the random probability of mating success was calculated to be 4%. A combination of several adaptations dramatically increases their mating success to nearly 100%. First, the male and female hang upside down in a front-to-back mount. From behind, the male positions his penis dorsoventral toward the female's genitalia. The male maintains a tight hold on the female by biting the scruff on her neck and by holding her wings with his thumbs, allowing the pair to move forwards and backwards uninterruptedly and rhythmically. The male inserts the glans of his penis while the female bends …

Does Place Of Residence Affect Risk Of Suicide? A Spatial Epidemiologic Investigation In Kentucky From 1999 To 2008, Daniel M. Saman, Sabrina Walsh, Anna Borówko, Agricola Odoi

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Approximately 32,000 people take their own lives every year in the United States. In Kentucky, suicide mortality rates have been steadily increasing since 1999. Few studies in the United States have assessed spatial clustering of suicides. The purpose of this study was to identify high-risk clusters of suicide at the county level in Kentucky and assess the characteristics of those suicide cases within the clusters.

METHODS: A spatial epidemiological study was undertaken using suicide data for the period January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2008, obtained from the Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics. Descriptive analyses using Pearson's chi-square test …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The Gram-negative bacterium Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1(ES-1) grows on FeCO3 or FeS at oxic–anoxic interfaces at circumneutral pH, and the ES-1-mediated Fe(II) oxidation occurs extracellularly. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ES-1’s ability to oxidize Fe(II) remain unknown. Survey of the ES-1 genome for candidate genes formicrobial extracellular Fe(II) oxidation revealed that it contained a three-genecluster encoding homologs of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1(MR-1) MtrA, MtrB, and CymA that are involved in extracellular Fe(III) reduction. Homologs of MtrA and MtrB were also previously shown to be involved in extracellular Fe(II) oxidation by Rhodopseudomonas palustris TIE-1. To distinguish them from those found in MR-1, …

Diversification And Expression Of The Pin, Aux/Lax, And Abcb Families Of Putative Auxin Transporters In Populus, Nicola Carraro, Tracy Elizabeth Tisdale-Orr, Ronald Matthew Clouse, Anne Sophie Knöller, Rachel Spicer Feb 2012

Diversification And Expression Of The Pin, Aux/Lax, And Abcb Families Of Putative Auxin Transporters In Populus, Nicola Carraro, Tracy Elizabeth Tisdale-Orr, Ronald Matthew Clouse, Anne Sophie Knöller, Rachel Spicer

Botany Faculty Publications

Intercellular transport of the plant hormone auxin is mediated by three families of membrane-bound protein carriers, with the PIN and ABCB families coding primarily for efflux proteins and the AUX/LAX family coding for influx proteins. In the last decade our understanding of gene and protein function for these transporters in Arabidopsis has expanded rapidly but very little is known about their role in woody plant development. Here we present a comprehensive account of all three families in the model woody species Populus, including chromosome distribution, protein structure, quantitative gene expression, and evolutionary relationships. The PIN and AUX/LAX gene families …

Improving Undergraduate Education Through Active Learning Spaces, Thomas Jack Morris Feb 2012

Improving Undergraduate Education Through Active Learning Spaces, Thomas Jack Morris

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

I attended a meeting at U Minn from August 4-6 that was the first National Forum on improving undergraduate education through active learning spaces. The forum was held in the newly constructed and ultra modern “science teaching and student services building” on the U. Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The focus was on advancing practice and research on technology-enhanced learning spaces for undergraduate education with a focus on STEM disciplines. I will talk about the design of such interactive teaching spaces, some of affecting the use of these spaces and some successful practices that have been used to teach science to …
