Ipla2Β Overexpression In Smooth Muscle Exacerbates Angiotensin Ii-Induced Hypertension And Vascular Remodeling, Lindsay E Calderon, Shu Liu, Wen Su, Zhongwen Xie, Zhenheng Guo, Wanda Eberhard, Ming C. Gong

Physiology Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: Calcium independent group VIA phospholipase A2 (iPLA2β) is up-regulated in vascular smooth muscle cells in some diseases, but whether the up-regulated iPLA2β affects vascular morphology and blood pressure is unknown. The current study addresses this question by evaluating the basal- and angiotensin II infusion-induced vascular remodeling and hypertension in smooth muscle specific iPLA2β transgenic (iPLA2β-Tg) mice.

METHOD AND RESULTS: Blood pressure was monitored by radiotelemetry and vascular remodeling was assessed by morphologic analysis. We found that the angiotensin II-induced increase in diastolic pressure was significantly higher in iPLA2β-Tg …

ETSU Faculty Works

N-Acylethanolamines (NAEs) are bioactive lipids derived from the hydrolysis of the membrane phospholipid N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine (NAPE). In animal systems this reaction is part of the “endocannabinoid” signaling pathway, which regulates a variety of physiological processes. The signaling function of NAE is terminated by fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which hydrolyzes NAE to ethanolamine and free fatty acid. Our previous work in Arabidopsis thaliana showed that overexpression of AtFAAH (At5g64440) lowered endogenous levels of NAEs in seeds, consistent with its role in NAE signal termination. Reduced NAE levels were accompanied by an accelerated growth phenotype, increased sensitivity to abscisic acid (ABA), enhanced …

Matrix Metalloproteinase Genes Are Transcriptionally Regulated By E2f Transcription Factors: A Link Between Cell Cycle Control And Metastatic Progression, Jacqueline Lea Johnson Feb 2012

Matrix Metalloproteinase Genes Are Transcriptionally Regulated By E2f Transcription Factors: A Link Between Cell Cycle Control And Metastatic Progression, Jacqueline Lea Johnson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The RbµE2F transcriptional regulatory pathway plays a critical role in the cell cycle. Rb is inactivated through multiple waves of phosphorylation, mediated mainly by cyclin D and cyclin E associated kinases. Once Rb is inactivated, cells can enter Sµphase. Collectively, three Rb family members and ten E2F proteins coordinate every additional stage of the cell cycle, from quiescence to mitosis. However the RbµE2F pathway is frequently altered in cancer. Aside from cell proliferation, the RbµE2F pathway regulates other essential cellular processes including apoptosis, cell differentiation, angiogenesis and DNA damage repair pathways, but its role in invasion and cancer progression is …

Development Of A Process For Identification Of The Operational Mode Of Industrial Sites Using High Dimensional Multi-Modal Data, Jake Clements

Theses

Many algorithms exist to determine the physical contents of an image. Target detection or anomaly detection algorithms, for example, use statistical and geometric approaches in high dimensional space to locate objects within a scene. Instead of target detection, however, it has become of interest of late to delve deeper into the field of remote sensing in order to perform textit{process detection}. Process detection refers to the ability to identify the operational mode of an industrial facility. To accurately complete this task will require a new set of analysis tools. This thesis discusses a method that can be used to perform …

Advertising And Consumerism In The Food Industry, Marlene Keller

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

The eating habits of society as a whole have drastically changed over the last few decades. The influx of technology, advertising, images in the media and changes within modern cultural and family values play a big role in the psychological evolution of consumers in the food service industry. My goal is to discover how the images in advertisements and media influence our desire to purchase food and alter our perception on what makes food appealing. In this thesis paper, I will start off with an introduction of how consumerism has changed since the use of advertisements first began. I will …

Over My Dead Body: The Legal Nightmare And Medical Phenomenon Of Posthumous Conception Through Postmortem Sperm Retrieval, Devon D. Williams

Campbell Law Review

Part I of this Comment lays a historical foundation of the gradual development of case law dealing with reproductive rights as they relate to postmortem conception and discusses uniform laws that have partially addressed the issue of PMSR. Part II explains more specifically the difficulties facing the legal community due to the lack of precedent on the topic and lack of legislation; it also delves into the problems of construing postmortem intent and how that uncertainty affects PMSR from the outset. The first three subparts of Part III discuss the public policy arguments against PMSR, while the fourth subpart takes …

Halocarbocyclization Entry Into The Oxabicyclo[4.3.1]Decyl Exomethylene-Δ-Lactone Cores Of Linearifolin And Zaluzanin A - Exploiting Combinatorial Catalysis, Sandeep K. Ginotra, Jacob A. Friest, David B. Berkowitz

David Berkowitz Publications

A streamlined entry into the sesquiterpene lactones (SQL) cores of linearifolin and zaluzanin A is described. Stereochemistry is controlled through transformations uncovered by ISES (In-Situ- Enzymatic-Screening). Absolute stereochemistry derives from kinetic resolution of 5- benzyloxypentene-1,2-oxide, utilizing a β-pinene-derived-Co(III)-salen. Relative stereochemistry (1,3-cis-fusion)is set via formal halometalation/carbocyclization, mediated by [Rh(O2CC3F7)2]2/ LiBr. Subsequent ring-closing metathesis (RCM-Grubbs II) yields the title exomethylene-δ- lactone SQL-cores. In complementary fashion, RCM with Grubbs-I catalyst provides the oxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonyl-core of xerophilusin R and zinagrandinolide.

Microbes in the atmosphere (microbial aerosols) play an important role in climate and provide an ecological and biogeochemical connection between oceanic, atmospheric, and terrestrial environments. However, the sources and environmental factors controlling the concentration, diversity, transport, and viability of microbial aerosols are poorly understood. This study examined culturable microbial aerosols from a coastal environment in Maine (USA) and determined the effect of onshore wind speed and fog presence on deposition rate, source, and community composition. During fog events with low onshore winds (

Homeopoesis: Aristotle On Nutrition And Growth, John Thorp Feb 2012

Homeopoesis: Aristotle On Nutrition And Growth, John Thorp

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

This paper seeks to understand how Aristotle’s ideas about nutrition avoid cancerous growth: why does the flesh that is distilled out of the digestive process, and that travels out to the various parts of the body, not just produce formless growth? De Anima II.5 gives a purely formal reply ("limit and ratio:") Using GA and GC I try to put together Aristotle's schematic account of the process.
