An Evaluation Of Niche Separation In The Terrestrial Primate Fauna Of Plio-Pleistocene South Africa Using Biogeochemical Data, Ethan Fulwood
An Evaluation Of Niche Separation In The Terrestrial Primate Fauna Of Plio-Pleistocene South Africa Using Biogeochemical Data, Ethan Fulwood
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Human evolution in the Plio-Pleistocene occurred in the context of a community of large-bodied terrestrial primates which may have shaped aspects of australopithecine ecology. Ecological theory would predict a degree of niche separation between these closely related sympatric species. Here, data from published biogeochemical paleodiet studies are used to test this hypothesis. The use of biogeochemistry in approximating niche width has been suggested on the basis of its reflection of an average of the total diet of an organism and its linear comparability between observations (Bearhop et al. 2004). Data on two measures, δ13C, which indicates the photosynthetic pathway of …
Hagiographic And Hymnic Representations Of Women, Dress, And Identity In The Early Christian East, Jenny Bledsoe
Hagiographic And Hymnic Representations Of Women, Dress, And Identity In The Early Christian East, Jenny Bledsoe
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In the early Christian East, as now, dress indicated conformity or nonconformity to social norms, projecting and sometimes concealing the individual’s gender and religious identities in a social context and indicating their position in the Church hierarchy. In the vitae of female saints Pelagia of Antioch, Anastasia, and Mary of Egypt and the hymns of Ephrem the Syrian, dress also functioned as a textual device to illustrate fundamental changes in the life of the individual Christian and, especially in the case of Ephrem, to convey theological truths about virginity and the relationship between Christ and humanity to an audience of …
The Effects Of Hemiparasitism By Castilleja Species On Community Structure In Alpine Ecosystems, Johannah Reed
The Effects Of Hemiparasitism By Castilleja Species On Community Structure In Alpine Ecosystems, Johannah Reed
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
There is a long history in ecology of examining how interactions such as competition, predation, and mutualism influence the structure and dynamics of natural communities. However, few studies to date have experimentally assessed the role of hemiparasitic plants as a structuring force. Hemiparasitic plants have the potential to shape plant communities because of their ability to photosynthesize and parasitize and because of their abundance in a variety of natural and managed ecosystems. A study was conducted which focused on the impacts of hemiparasitic species in the genus Castilleja, which are ubiquitous in montane meadows in the Colorado Rockies. This study …

Advances In Ultrafast Time Resolved Fluorescence Physics For Cancer Detection In Optical Biopsy, R. R. Alfano
Publications and Research
We discuss the use of time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy to extract fundamental kinetic information on molecular species in tissues. The temporal profiles reveal the lifetime and amplitudes associated with key active molecules distinguishing the local spectral environment of tissues. The femtosecond laser pulses at 310 nm excite the tissue. The emission profile at 340 nm from tryptophan is non-exponential due to the micro-environment. The slow and fast amplitudes and lifetimes of emission profiles reveal that cancer and normal states can be distinguished. Time resolved optical methods offer a new cancer diagnostic modality for the medical community.

Combustion Simulations Using Graphic Processing Units, Mingjie Wang
Combustion Simulations Using Graphic Processing Units, Mingjie Wang
Master's Theses
Graphic processing units (GPUs) are powerful graphics engines featuring high levels of parallelism and extreme memory bandwidth, which constitute a powerful computing platform to solve complex problems involving chemically reacting flows. In the present study, computer programs for combustion simulations with detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms were compiled in the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) language for NVIDIA GPU architecture. Ignition processes were simulated under constant pressure and constant volume conditions using an explicit 4th order Runge-Kutta algorithm for time integration. Sufficiently small time steps were identified with time scale analysis to ensure the integration stability. The program was validated …

Specialization In Small-Scale Societies: The Organization Of Pottery Production At Kolomoki (9er1), Early County, Georgia, Travis Laforge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Investigating the organization of production systems can reveal much about a society, in particular how resources and labor were allocated, and the influence that economic, political, social, and ceremonial institutions had on the production process. Interpreting the nature of specialized production is useful for understanding how production was organized. In turn, the degree of standardization exhibited by the goods being produced is used to determine the nature of specialization. While archaeological research regarding specialized production has expanded over time to incorporate a wide range of societies, such research is often focused on complex societies. The research presented here focuses on …

College of Health and Human Services
Since the first generation of DNA vaccines was introduced in 1988, remarkable improvements have been made to improve their efficacy and immunogenicity. Although human clinical trials have shown that delivery of DNA vaccines is well tolerated and safe, the potency of these vaccines in humans is somewhat less than optimal. The development of a gene-based vaccine that was effective enough to be approved for clinical use in humans would be one of, if not the most important, advance in vaccines to date. This paper highlights the literature relating to gene-based vaccines, specifically DNA vaccines, and suggests possible approaches to boost …

Ecosystem Service Tradeoff Analysis Reveals The Value Of Marine Spatial Planning For Multiple Ocean Uses, Crow White, Benjamin S. Halpern, Carrie V. Kappel
Biological Sciences
Marine spatial planning (MSP) is an emerging responsibility of resource managers around the United States and elsewhere. A key proposed advantage of MSP is that it makes tradeoffs in resource use and sector (stakeholder group) values explicit, but doing so requires tools to assess tradeoffs. We extended tradeoff analyses from economics to simultaneously assess multiple ecosystem services and the values they provide to sectors using a robust, quantitative, and transparent framework. We used the framework to assess potential conflicts among offshore wind energy, commercial fishing, and whale-watching sectors in Massachusetts and identify and quantify the value from choosing optimal wind …

Abstract With the advent of new interventions targeted at both acute and chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), it is critical that techniques and protocols are developed that reliably evaluate changes in upper limb impairment/function. The Graded Redefined Assessment of Strength Sensibility and Prehension (GRASSP) protocol, which includes five subtests, is a quantitative clinical upper limb impairment measure designed for use in acute and chronic cervical SCI. The objectives of this study were to: (1) establish the inter-rater and test-retest reliability, and (2) establish the construct and concurrent validity with the International Standards of Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI), …

Veterinary Science Faculty Patents
The present invention relates, in general, to attenuated equine influenza viruses having an impaired ability to antagonize the cellular interferon (IFN) response, and the use of such attenuated viruses in vaccine and pharmaceutical formulations. In particular, the invention relates to attenuated equine influenza viruses having modifications to an equine NS1 gene that diminish or eliminate the ability of the NS1 gene product to antagonize the cellular IFN response. These viruses replicate in vivo, but demonstrate decreased replication, virulence and increased attenuation, and therefore are well suited for use in live virus vaccines, and pharmaceutical formulations.

The disaccharide trehalose is considered as a universal stress molecule, protecting cells and biomolecules from injuries imposed by high osmolarity, heat, oxidation, desiccation and freezing. Chromohalobacter salexigens is a halophilic and extremely halotolerant γ-proteobacterium of the family Halomonadaceae. In this work, we have investigated the role of trehalose as a protectant against salinity, temperature and desiccation in C. salexigens. A mutant deficient in the trehalose-6-phosphate synthase gene (otsA::Ω) was not affected in its salt or heat tolerance, but double mutants ectoine- and trehalose-deficient, or hydroxyectoine-reduced and trehalose-deficient, displayed an osmo- and thermosensitive phenotype, respectively. This suggests …

Bacterial RNase P is an essential ribonucleoprotein composed of a catalytic RNA component (encoded by the rnpB gene) and an associated protein moiety (encoded by rnpA). We construct a system that allows for the deletion of the essential endogenous rnpA copy and for its simultaneous replacement by a heterologous version of the gene. Using growth rate as a proxy, we explore the effects on fitness of heterologous replacement by increasingly divergent versions of the RNase P protein. All of the heterologs tested complement the loss of the endogenous rnpA gene, suggesting that all existing bacterial versions of the rnpA …

Design And Construction Of Functional Metal-Metalloporphyrin Frameworks, Le Meng
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Porous metal-organic frameworks are a new type of functional materials with potential applications for gas storage, gas separation, catalysis, biomedical and chemical sensors. This thesis describes several porous metal-metalloporphyrin frameworks (MMPFs), which were synthesized with a series of transition metals and 5,15-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)-10,20-bis(2,6-dibromophenyl)porphine. Among these MMPFs, the cobalt MMPF (CoBrPTC) has a fcu structure, which represents the first porphyrin-based MOF with this topology. CoBrPTC was evaluated as heterogeneous catalyst and demonstrated interesting catalytic performances.
