Treatment Of Dual Diagnosis Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Substance Use Disorders: A Meta-Analysis, Joshua Dolan Apr 2012

Treatment Of Dual Diagnosis Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Substance Use Disorders: A Meta-Analysis, Joshua Dolan

Dissertations (1934 -)

The dual diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders affects a large number of people. Various treatments have been used for addressing these co-occurring disorders and have now been empirically tested. These treatments can be divided into two categories: sequential and integrated. The goal of this study was to meta-analytically examine the effectiveness of these treatments and compare these two categories of treatment. Secondary objectives included the exploration of potential moderator variables and the symptom interplay between the two disorders after treatment. The results of the study suggested that treatment for the dual diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder …

Love And Lonergan's Cognitional-Intentional Anthropology: An Inquiry On The Question Of A "Fifth Level Of Consciousness", Jeremy Blackwood Apr 2012

Love And Lonergan's Cognitional-Intentional Anthropology: An Inquiry On The Question Of A "Fifth Level Of Consciousness", Jeremy Blackwood

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses a controversial question among those who study the work of Bernard J.F. Lonergan, SJ (1904-1984): To what extent and with what intent did Lonergan affirm a fifth level of consciousness? He used the spatial image of "levels of consciousness" to express the relations among key operations of the conscious human subject, and the image remains common currency for those familiar with his work. However, the precise number of levels shifted and developed throughout Lonergan's career, beginning with three, moving to four, and finally including some mention of a fifth. As the level of love, this fifth level …

Alteration In 5ht1a Receptor Activity From A Prenatal Exposure To Dexamethasone In A Stressed And Non-Stressed Adult Male Rat, Darshan S. Shah Apr 2012

Alteration In 5ht1a Receptor Activity From A Prenatal Exposure To Dexamethasone In A Stressed And Non-Stressed Adult Male Rat, Darshan S. Shah

Honors Theses

Synthetic glucocorticoids (GC) are used as a clinical therapeutic to stimulate lung development in fetuses that present the risk of preterm delivery. Previous studies have shown that a prenatal exposure to Dexamethasone (DEX) causes a disturbance in normal GC mediation of neuritic outgrowth, cell signaling, and serotonergic systems. Our hypothesis is that a prenatal exposure to DEX during the third trimester of pregnancy alters 5HT1A receptor function. Pregnant dams were injected daily with 150μg/ml/kg of DEX from gestation day 14 through 19. Control dams were treated with and equal volume of saline. Swim stress followed by elevated plus maze testing …

Ecotourism Along Pucallpa-Cruzeiro Do Sul Corridor: Support For Biodiversity Conservation, Will Gordon Apr 2012

Ecotourism Along Pucallpa-Cruzeiro Do Sul Corridor: Support For Biodiversity Conservation, Will Gordon

Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects

The paper addressing the issue of biodiversity conservation along a newly proposed transportation corridor from Pucallpa, Peru and Cruzeiro do Sul, Brazil. Current plans for this corridor call for the construction of a highway, but this paper supports a railway as a less intrusive means. In order to support biodiversity conservation along the new highway or railway a hypothetical ecotourism lodge located in the Sierra del Divisor Peruvian National Park is examined. Ecotourism is defined by The International Ecotourism Society as, “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people” (TIES, 1990). Ecotourism …

Road Construction And Amur Tigers (Panthera Tigris Altaica) In The Russian Far East, Elizabeth Cohan Apr 2012

Road Construction And Amur Tigers (Panthera Tigris Altaica) In The Russian Far East, Elizabeth Cohan

Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects

The Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), also known as the Siberian tiger, is an endangered species in the Russian Far East that has experienced a sharp population decline during the past century (Tian et al. 2011, 3166). Roads may be one of the primary factors for the dramatic decline of tiger population because the species most sensitive to roads tend to be large carnivores that rely on large movement ranges and have low reproductive rates (Fahrig and Rytwinski 2009, 1 and Tian et al. 2011, 3166). Tigers (Panthera tigris) are an example of such fragile large …

Portrayal Of The Proposed Pucallpa-Cruzeiro Do Sol Interconnection In The Media, Christine Cassaro Apr 2012

Portrayal Of The Proposed Pucallpa-Cruzeiro Do Sol Interconnection In The Media, Christine Cassaro

Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects

Takahashi (2010) argues the evolution of the media environment, the rise of huge media conglomerates and the nature of media outlets to seek profit maximization have come to dominate, limiting the ability of mass media to truly fulfill its role in democratic societies. Whether we recognize it or not, the media plays a crucial role in our knowledge of what is going on in our local and global communities. In the case of environmental issues and concerns such as climate change, the media is crucial in building public perception. Public support is often necessary for the implementation of important policies, …

Molecular Staging Individualizing Cancer Management, Alex Mejia, Stephanie Schulz, Terry Hyslop, David S. Weinberg, Scott A. Waldman Apr 2012

Molecular Staging Individualizing Cancer Management, Alex Mejia, Stephanie Schulz, Terry Hyslop, David S. Weinberg, Scott A. Waldman

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Although the most important prognostic and predictive marker in colorectal cancer is tumor cells in lymph nodes, ∼30% of patients who are node-negative die from occult metastases. Molecular staging employing specific markers and sensitive detection technologies has emerged as a powerful platform to assess prognosis in node-negative colon cancer. Integrating molecular staging into algorithms that individualize patient management will require validation and the definition of relationships between occult tumor cells, prognosis, and responses to chemotherapy. Un-Convicting The Innocent: The Case For Shaken Baby Syndrome Review Panels, Rachel Burg Apr 2012

Un-Convicting The Innocent: The Case For Shaken Baby Syndrome Review Panels, Rachel Burg

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note proposes that states should develop error-correction bodies to identify past errors that have resulted in wrongful convictions of people accused of shaking a child. These institutions, which I call SBS Review Panels, would be similar to the error-correction bodies and commissions that have recently been established throughout the world to deal with various sorts of wrongful convictions. An SBS-specific commission should be developed because of the high level of scientific expertise that is required to fully understand this diagnosis and the problems associated with using the triad of medical findings as evidence of the defendant's conduct. Part I …

Grand Strategy And International Law, Nicholas Rostow Apr 2012

Grand Strategy And International Law, Nicholas Rostow

Strategic Forums

Grand strategy is, or should be, the “calculated relationship of means to large ends.” Interrelated strategic and legal dimensions provide a leitmotif to the modern history of relations among powerful states. States employ an array of means to achieve their large ends—military power, as well as diplomatic, informational, economic/financial, and legal tools and influence. They differ in effectiveness and precision. In the web of interactions that shape contemporary international relations, the legal dimension as a framework and guide to choices is more often overlooked than particular legal instruments that might be invoked in the belief, or more often the hope, …

Road Construction As A Facilitator For Dengue Fever Transmission, Kate Billups Apr 2012

Road Construction As A Facilitator For Dengue Fever Transmission, Kate Billups

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

Although I plan to focus on the impact of road construction in tropical and subtropical regions on the spread and contraction of dengue fever, I hope to use this focus as a model that could help to create policies that would mitigate other diseases spread through insect contact. In places that road and railway construction have already become a part of the permanent foundation, medical infrastructure should be put into place to ensure that populations at increased risk to contract dengue fever have access to medical care to diminish rates of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Is Emerging Adulthood Influencing Moffitt’S Developmental Taxonomy? Adding The “Prolonged” Adolescent Offender, Christopher Salvatore, Travis A. Taniguchi, Wayne Welsh Apr 2012

Is Emerging Adulthood Influencing Moffitt’S Developmental Taxonomy? Adding The “Prolonged” Adolescent Offender, Christopher Salvatore, Travis A. Taniguchi, Wayne Welsh

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The study of offender trajectories has been a prolific area of criminological research. However, few studies have incorporated the influence of emerging adulthood, a recently identified stage of the life course, on offending trajectories. The present study addressed this shortcoming by introducing the "prolonged adolescent" offender, a low-level offender between the ages of 18 and 25 that has failed to successfully transition into adult social roles. A theoretical background based on prior research in life-course criminology and emerging adulthood is presented. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health analyses examined the relationship between indicators of traditional turning …

The Meaning Of Running In American Society, Kristin Owen Westfall Apr 2012

The Meaning Of Running In American Society, Kristin Owen Westfall

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Most media resources, medical associations, articles of popular culture, and sports-related companies promote running as an activity that builds self-esteem and supports general physical and mental health. This paper delves into the connection between running and the characteristics of our society. The analysis examines the meaning of running, as a symbol of our society that perpetuates ideals of corporatization, consumerism, capitalism, and gender stereotypes. Additionally, this paper examines the ways running is perceived and participated in; and how they have changed overtime, alongside political, economic, and historical events.

After Gina, Nina? Neuroscience-Based Discrimination In The Workplace, Stephanie A. Kostiuk

Vanderbilt Law Review

In 1990, the Human Genome Project ("HGP") was formed to decipher and sequence the human genome, to develop new tools to obtain and analyze genetic data, and to make the information widely available.' Researchers completed the HGP in 2003 with the genetic technology and resources developed providing new opportunities for medical progress. In particular, discoveries about the genetic basis of illness and the development of genetic testing allowed for earlier diagnosis and detection of genetic predispositions to disease. These advances, however, also gave rise to the potential misuse of genetic information, as revealed by genetic testing, to discriminate against and …

Gender And Spirituality: Are Women Really More Spiritual?, Alvin Rich Ii

Senior Honors Theses

This study explored the interaction of gender and spirituality. Most current research indicates that women are more religious than men. However, this phenomenon has various potential explanations. These explanations include socialization, church congregation factors, emotionality, individual motivation for religion, and biology. In this study a survey was administered to a convenience sample of 399 Liberty University students to assess their level of spirituality. This spirituality test was intended to measure the perceived significance of spiritual things in one’s life and interactions, level of activity in religious organizations, community involvement, and amount of studying for the purpose of spiritual enlightenment. Many …

The Inconsistent Inheritance Rights Of Adult Adoptees And A Proposal For Uniformity, Jackie Messler Apr 2012

The Inconsistent Inheritance Rights Of Adult Adoptees And A Proposal For Uniformity, Jackie Messler

Marquette Law Review

As summarized by the comparison of laws in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota, the inheritance rights of adult adoptees vary across jurisdictions. The inheritance rights of an adult adoptee will depend on the status of the stranger-to-the-adoption rule in the jurisdiction, the age limitations for inheritance in the jurisdiction, and whether there is any language granting or restricting inheritance rights in the testamentary documents. The majority of the time, the goal of the adoption is to make the person a genuine member of the family. As it stands, states do not uniformly treat adult adoptees as genuine members of the …

Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a within-population decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a dataset of postcranial linear measurements for 30 globally distributed human populations, and a climatic dataset …

Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions In The Life Cycle Assessment Of Cellulosic Ethanol From Crop Residue, Xiao Xue Fang

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Concerns about climate change and the increasing cost of fossil fuels have led to interest in the development of renewable biofuel pathways for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The use of corn residue as a potential source of biomass feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production has been favored as cost effective. Previous research has shown that crop residue removal can cause a loss of soil organic carbon (SOC), which potentially is a source of GHG emissions in the form of CO2. Using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach, this study investigated the impact of corn residue removal on total …
