Dispersal Behavior Correlates With Personality Of A North American Fish, Josh E. Rasmussen, Mark C. Belk Apr 2012

Dispersal Behavior Correlates With Personality Of A North American Fish, Josh E. Rasmussen, Mark C. Belk

Faculty Publications

The process of dispersal is determined by the interaction of individual (intrinsic) traits and environmental (extrinsic) factors. Although many studies address and quantify dispersal, few evaluate both intrinsic and extrinsic factors jointly. We test the relative importance of intrinsic traits (exploration tendency and size) and extrinsic factors (population density and habitat quality) on dispersal of a medium-sized western United States minnow, southern leatherside chub Lepidomeda aliciae. A generalized linear model with a binomial response was used to determine the probability of individuals dispersing one year after tagging. Medium-sized individuals that were more prone to explore novel environments were 10.7 …

Antidepressants As A Standalone Treatment Modality Compared To Antidepressants With Conjunctive Therapies For Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder, Patricia J. Moos Apr 2012

Antidepressants As A Standalone Treatment Modality Compared To Antidepressants With Conjunctive Therapies For Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder, Patricia J. Moos

Theses and Dissertations

Major Depression Disorder is a wide spread epidemic in our country. Antidepressants are commonly prescribed by general medical practitioners as well as mental health practitioners with a low success rate ( de Jonghe, 2008). The purpose of this Independent Study was to conduct a literature review to determine if antidepressants are effective as a standalone therapy in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder or if they have a higher success rate when used with conjunctive therapies such as cognitive therapy, exercise, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). An evidence based review of the literature was conducted to determine the current knowledge base …

Leukocyte telomere length is widely considered a biomarker of human age and in many studies indicative of health or disease. We have obtained quantitative estimates of telomere length from blood leukocytes in a population sample, confirming results of previous studies that telomere length significantly decreases with age. Telomere length was also positively associated with several measures of healthy aging, but this relationship was dependent on age. We screened two genes known to be involved in telomere maintenance for association with the age-related decline in telomere length observed in our population to identify candidate longevity-associated genes. A single-nucleotide polymorphism located in …

Against The Grain: Critical Reflections On The State And Future Of Genocide Scholarship, Henry C. Theriault

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article critiques certain trends in genocide studies, including scholarly misuse of Lemkin’s sta- tus and work, retreat from academic activism against genocide, dismissive approaches to victim groups’ political agency, relativist tendencies of the “memory politics” concept and its application, growing institutionalization of the field, the obscuring of genocidal violence against women and girls through the concept of “gendercide,” the focus on dehumanization as a condition of genocide, and the emphasis on early warning. The article also discusses a new genocide denial strategy. In light of this, genocide early warning is largely irrelevant and, far beyond political indifference accounting for …

(Iv) Managing Bone Loss Of The Femur And Tibia In Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty, Glenn J. Kerr, M.D, Joseph A. Karam, M.D., Javad Parvizi, M.D., Frcs

Rothman Institute Papers

The number of primary and revision knee arthroplasty procedures performed yearly is steadily increasing. The management of bone loss at the time of revision surgery will play an integral role in the longevity and function of these knees into the future. There are a variety of options for addressing these defects varying from the use of polymethylmethacrylate bone cement, metal augments, sleeves, cones and large allograft replacements. This manuscript discusses the evaluation, classification and management of bone loss of the distal femur and proximal tibia.

Resistensi Pekerja Perempuan Terhadap Dominasi Pekerja Laki-Laki Dalam Film North Country, Nur Aini Tumakaka

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

Knowledge Engineering In Search Engines, Yun-Chieh Lin Apr 2012

Knowledge Engineering In Search Engines, Yun-Chieh Lin

Master's Projects

With large amounts of information being exchanged on the Internet, search engines have become the most popular tools for helping users to search and filter this information. However, keyword-based search engines sometimes obtain information, which does not meet user’ needs. Some of them are even irrelevant to what the user queries. When the users get query results, they have to read and organize them by themselves. It is not easy for users to handle information when a search engine returns several million results. This project uses a granular computing approach to find knowledge structures of a search engine. The project …

Development Of Best Management Practice Design Guidance For Roadway Applications In Nebraska, Benedict Vacha Apr 2012

Development Of Best Management Practice Design Guidance For Roadway Applications In Nebraska, Benedict Vacha

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Runoff from roadways carries pollutants which may be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. The primary pollutants of concern for roadway runoff are solids and heavy metals, particularly cadmium, copper, and zinc. Roadway runoff falls under the legislation of the Clean Water Act (CWA) via the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). CWA regulates discharge of nonpoint source pollutants, such as roadway runoff, by issuing permits to public entities which manage Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s). Part of the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) permitting requirement is to create a design guide for Best Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to remediate roadway …

The Impact Of Teacher Attitudes And Perceptions Of Direct Instruction On Student Achievement In Reading, Sharon Collum Apr 2012

The Impact Of Teacher Attitudes And Perceptions Of Direct Instruction On Student Achievement In Reading, Sharon Collum

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2004), 37% of America's fourth graders are not reading at grade level. This statistic has remained unchanged for over a decade (NCES, 2004). Findings from multiple studies indicate more research on successfully implementing reading interventions is needed (Begeny & Silber, 2006; Begeny, Krouse, Ross, & Mitchell, 2009). Barnyak and Paquette (2010) suggested that although teachers learn new methods, they return to the strategies they are most comfortable using. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine if teacher attitudes and perceptions of direct instruction impacted student achievement in reading. Elementary …

Gait Variability Measures Reveal Differences Between Multiple Sclerosis Patients And Healthy Controls, Jeffrey P. Kaipust, Jessie M. Huisinga, Mary Filipi, Nikolaos Stergiou Apr 2012

Gait Variability Measures Reveal Differences Between Multiple Sclerosis Patients And Healthy Controls, Jeffrey P. Kaipust, Jessie M. Huisinga, Mary Filipi, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in gait variability between patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthy controls during walking at a self-selected pace. Methods: Kinematics were collected during three minutes of treadmill walking for 10 patients with MS and 10 healthy controls. The Coefficient of Variation (CoV), the Approximate Entropy (ApEn) and the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) were used to investigate the fluctuations present in stride length and step width from continuous strides. Results: ApEn revealed that patients with MS had significantly lower values than healthy controls for stride length (p < .001) and step width (p < .001). Conclusions: ApEn results revealed that the natural fluctuations present during gait in the stride length and step width time series are more regular and repeatable in patients with MS. These changes implied that patients with MS may exhibit reduced capacity to adapt and respond to perturbations during gait.

Are Ephemeral Ponds Critical Wildlife Habitat In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert?, Julia S. Alva ^, Jerry D. Johnson, Vanessa Lougheed ^

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Indio Mountains Research Station (IMRS), in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, contains one natural, permanent spring (Squaw Spring) and many man-made ephemerally-full tanks, both of which are presumably important for the survival of many species residing in that area. The goal of this study was to monitor wildlife use of these water bodies using motion sensor cameras to determine species-specific preferences for individual water bodies, temporal activity patterns and the reasons for these preferences. We installed motion sensor cameras and water level loggers at five different water bodies throughout IMRS. The dominant mammals visiting the tanks were peccary (Pecari tajacu …

Nutrient Limitation Of Algal Biomass In Streams Of The Sacramento Mountains, New Mexico, Bianca C. Luong^, Vanessa Lougheed*

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Anthropogenic activities often alter the chemistry and overall quality of freshwater ecosystems. Algae are good indicators of ecosystem health because they respond quickly to influxes of nutrients. In this study, we used algal biomass and nutrient limitation experiments to assess the water quality in streams of the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. We sampled 7 sites monthly from May to September 2011, with the exception of June (n = 27) for both periphyton (attached algae) and phytoplankton. Phytoplankton algal biomass was significantly related to phosphorus in the water column; while there were no relationships between periphyton biomass and nutrients. The …

The Causes And Consequences Of Increased Active Layer Depth In Arctic Tundra Ponds Over The Past 40 Years, Gabriela Contreras ^, Vanessa L. Lougheed * Apr 2012

The Causes And Consequences Of Increased Active Layer Depth In Arctic Tundra Ponds Over The Past 40 Years, Gabriela Contreras ^, Vanessa L. Lougheed *

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Active layer is used to describe the upper most layer of soil that thaws each summer in the Arctic. With a warming Arctic, permafrost is expected to thaw and active layer depth to increase, thus releasing organic material and nutrients into aquatic environments; however, there are few long-term datasets available to test these predictions. The ponds at the International Biological Program (IBP) site in Barrow, Alaska represent one of the only locations in the Arctic with long-term aquatic ecosystem data. The objective of this study was to determine whether the temperature of tundra ponds has increased over the past 40 …

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer (Pcet) With Bimetallic Systems, Maripaz A. Calderon ^, Dino Villagran * Apr 2012

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer (Pcet) With Bimetallic Systems, Maripaz A. Calderon ^, Dino Villagran *

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Electron-transfer (ET) is one of the simplest chemical events, yet, it is a vital process for chemical reactivity. Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the concerted transfer of protons and electrons which is fundamental in chemical and biological systems and processes in electrochemistry, photosynthesis, and enzymatic activity. Similarly, mixed-valence (MV) systems are pervasive in nature and provide a platform for multiple electron transfers systems in nature. While both fields have been studied extensively, little work has been done on the intersection of the two. This project explores the elegant use of MV bimetallic systems through hydrogen bonded networks. A variety compounds …

Utilization Of Corn Residue, Winter Range, Or Dry Lot In Beef Heifer Development Systems, Stetson P. Weber

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Post-weaning heifer development systems that maximize reproductive efficiency and reduce input costs associated with feed is beneficial for cow/calf producers. Two research experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of post-weaning development systems in beef heifers. In Exp. 1 heifers were developed on corn residue (CR), or dry lot (DL). Heifers developed in DL had increased BW after winter treatment until breeding. Both heifer groups were similar in percent of heifers cycling, AI conception, AI pregnancy, and final pregnancy diagnosis. A subset of AI pregnant heifers were blocked by weight and stratified by winter development system and individually fed using …

The biochemical and physical factors controlling protein expression level and solubility in vivo remain incompletely characterized. To gain insight into the primary sequence features influencing these outcomes, we performed statistical analyses of results from the high-throughput protein-production pipeline of the Northeast Structural Genomics Consortium. Proteins expressed in E. coli and consistently purified were scored independently for expression and solubility levels. These parameters nonetheless show a very strong positive correlation. We used logistic regressions to determine whether they are systematically influenced by fractional amino acid composition or several bulk sequence parameters including hydrophobicity, sidechain entropy, electrostatic charge, and predicted backbone disorder. …

The Drosophila MSL complex mediates dosage compensation by increasing transcription of the single X chromosome in males approximately two-fold. This is accomplished through recognition of the X chromosome and subsequent acetylation of histone H4K16 on X-linked genes. Initial binding to the X is thought to occur at "entry sites" that contain a consensus sequence motif ("MSL recognition element" or MRE). However, this motif is only ∼2 fold enriched on X, and only a fraction of the motifs on X are initially targeted. Here we ask whether chromatin context could distinguish between utilized and non-utilized copies of the motif, by comparing …
