Synthesis And 1H-Nmr Characterization Of Amphiphilic Acrylate Block Copolymers To Investigate The Effect Of Chain Rigidity On Micelle Formation In Solution, David Arnold Apr 2012

Synthesis And 1H-Nmr Characterization Of Amphiphilic Acrylate Block Copolymers To Investigate The Effect Of Chain Rigidity On Micelle Formation In Solution, David Arnold

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Amphiphilic block copolymers are composed of distinct segments exhibiting different chemical properties. In solution, block copolymers may self-assemble to form micelles when triggered by a change in the environment. The effect of chain rigidity can be investigated in better detail if the molecular weights are controlled, as the polymer’s ability to aggregate is also influenced by polymer size. Acrylate and methacrylate monomers were chosen for their similar chemical properties but their difference in reported glass transition temperature (Tg) 1H-NMR methods were developed to measure molecular weight of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(t-butyl acrylate) homopolymers to corroborate size-exclusion …

Security Council Resolution 1887 And The Quest For Nuclear Disarmament, Usman Ahmed, Raghav Thapar Apr 2012

Security Council Resolution 1887 And The Quest For Nuclear Disarmament, Usman Ahmed, Raghav Thapar

Michigan Journal of International Law

Nuclear weapons pose an increased international threat to security in the modem era. Cheap transportation and the opening of national borders for trade have made it easy for nuclear materials to cross national boundaries. Informal networks have sprouted up, facilitating the proliferation and exchange of nuclear materials and the technology required to turn those materials into weapons. Advances in technology have made it easier to enrich uranium, instilling concerns of increased nuclear weapons proliferation. These changes in technology, the development of informal nuclear networks, and lax security in safeguarding weapons by states such as Russia and Pakistan have fueled global …

Family Psychoeducation In Clinical High Risk And First- Episode Psychosis, William R. Mcfarlane, Sarah Lynch, Ryan P. Melton Apr 2012

Family Psychoeducation In Clinical High Risk And First- Episode Psychosis, William R. Mcfarlane, Sarah Lynch, Ryan P. Melton

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Seventy percent of those who will have an episode of psychosis will have done so by age 25. Data from clinical trials of intervention during the clinical high risk period of psychosis have determined that the mean age is in mid-adolescence, 16-18 years of age. For those reasons, early intervention inherently involves adolescents, and by extension their parents and other family members and supports. Regarding the type of intervention, it is relevant that the current empirically-derived standard of treatment for schizophrenia, as concluded by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research survey of the treatment outcome literature, includes family …

Analysis Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Circadian Rhythms In Continuous Culture, Lauren Zager, Melissa Kohner, Carlton Lyons Apr 2012

Analysis Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Circadian Rhythms In Continuous Culture, Lauren Zager, Melissa Kohner, Carlton Lyons

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The circadian rhythm is a roughly 24-hour cycle in the physiological processes of organisms. There have been many studies on the circadian rhythms in other model organisms, but not in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To study the rhythm in S. cerevisiae, the levels of GAP dehydrogenase were observed. After the baseline levels were recorded, the conditions were changed to see if the circadian rhythm could be manipulated. The importance of identifying and studying the circadian oscillators in S. cerevisiae is to understand how the circadian rhythm is altered in differing conditions. The purpose of this experiment was to identify how changing the …

Mary Grace And The Warthog From Hell: Violent Redemption In Flannery O’Connor’S “Revelation”, Halina Hopkins Apr 2012

Mary Grace And The Warthog From Hell: Violent Redemption In Flannery O’Connor’S “Revelation”, Halina Hopkins

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Scholarship on the works of Flannery O’Connor is divided concerning her depiction of divine grace as a violent force. Some scholars worry that her insistence on the violence of grace makes God a violent God or excuses the pain and brokenness of the world. Despite the arguments of those who oppose O’Connor’s view of violent grace, this paper will argue that O’Connor is right to depict violence in her short stories because, although it might be counterintuitive to think of divine grace wounding before it heals, being torn from an old life of sin is painful. While not excusing violence …

Modeling Of Early Siv/Hiv Infection, Krista Schaefer, Cecilia Noecker, Kelly Zaccheo, Vitaly Gunasov, Judy Day, Yiding Yang

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Although HIV has infected over 20 million people worldwide, it is a rather poorly transmitted virus since less than 1 out of 100 to 1,000 acts of sexual intercourse results in virus transmission. The factors that could potentially explain why the probability of transmission is so small are poorly understood. It is nearly impossible to study HIV replication in the first 2-3 weeks of infection because the virus is undetectable until after that duration. By using stochastic simulations of mathematical models of early virus replication, we investigate how the duration of the eclipse phase prior to virus production (eclipse stage) …

Art Museum Curators And Management, Tiffany Tyler Apr 2012

Art Museum Curators And Management, Tiffany Tyler

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Art museums house the greatest works from artists around the world from classics to modern pop art, without discrimination and open to interpretation. Art museums are debatably one of the most sacred places in society. Any history museum will give details about ancient artifacts or new discoveries; art, however, can change in meaning with each new visitor. Museum curators go beyond the “do not touch” signs with their large key rings opening vaults of worth and beauty. Curators work directly with artists and other museums to resurrect a dying cultural tradition. With the assistance of Valparaiso University’s own Gloria Ruff, …

A Review Of The Molecular And Genetic Foundations Of Ankylosing Spondylitis, Emily Dowlearn Apr 2012

A Review Of The Molecular And Genetic Foundations Of Ankylosing Spondylitis, Emily Dowlearn

Senior Honors Theses

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disease that occurs in an adult-onset or juvenile-onset form. The symptoms, severity, and prevalence of this disease vary according to sex, age, and race. AS has been strongly associated with the gene that codes for protein HLA-B27, a protein that misfolds in AS and causes stress on the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). The ER then sets off a chain of events leading to the observed AS symptoms. Other mutant genes such as Interleukin 23R (IL23R) and ER Amino Peptidase 1 (ERAP1) have been associated with AS, though not as prominent as HLA-B27. AS is thought …

Object Neophilia In Domestic Purebred Dogs, Lydia Kniowski Apr 2012

Object Neophilia In Domestic Purebred Dogs, Lydia Kniowski

Senior Honors Theses

Neophilia is defined as a preference for novelty. This characteristic has been described in a variety of animal species, and may have been a contributing factor in the domestication of dogs. This study tested three purebred dog breeds for neophilia with inanimate objects. Observations of dogs’ selections when presented with two familiar toys and a novel toy were analyzed. Novel toys were preferred in 60% of selections presenting a significant neophilic trend (P=0.002). Of the breeds analyzed, Labradors selected novel toys 53% of the time, while Brittanys preferred them in 67% of selections. Although both breeds showed a …

Cosmetic Neurology: Enhancement Of The Mind And Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Medication Abuse Among College Students, Mary M. Huff

Senior Honors Theses

Cosmetic neurology is becoming increasingly popular, and it is not just sleep deprived, over worked college students who are interested. People are beginning to seek off-label prescriptions for medications that are typically used to treat disorders such as attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) or narcolepsy, while researchers are trying to create drugs used solely for mind enhancement purposes. Along with these drugs come many legal and ethical quandaries relating to the regulation of current use as well as the what ifs of future possibilities. A survey was conducted among college students regarding the diagnosis of ADHD, the abuse of ADHD …

Human-Canine Relationships: Dog Behavior And Owner Perceptions, Briannan K. Byrd Apr 2012

Human-Canine Relationships: Dog Behavior And Owner Perceptions, Briannan K. Byrd

Senior Honors Theses

Abstract

Owning a dog has many physiological and psychological advantages; however, dog behavior can manifest itself in a variety of negative ways, including aggression. Research suggested that genetics and environment might play a role in aggression. It was demonstrated that owners can affect their dogs’ behaviors. Owners can unwittingly condition or encourage their dogs to misbehave, whether through their inaccurate perceptions or misguided actions towards the dogs. Dog behavior specialists view owner education as the key to solving the communication barrier between human and canine. The present study’s purpose was to assess if this view was possible. The research question …

Gender Roles In Organizations In The Southeastern United States, Dianne Conlee Apr 2012

Gender Roles In Organizations In The Southeastern United States, Dianne Conlee

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study on gender roles in organizations in the southeastern United States as compared to the rest of the United States. The hypothesis was developed after a review of literature that included relevant research on traditional gender roles, gender roles in organizations, gender roles in the southeastern United States and gender roles over time. After reviewing the literature the hypothesis that gender role experiences in organizations located within the southeastern United States will reflect more traditional than gender role attitudes than experiences in the rest of the United States. The research study was conducted using egalitarianism as …

Molecular Basis Of The Fructose-2,6-Bisphosphatase Reaction Of Pfkfb3: Transition State And The C-Terminal Function, Michael C. Cavalier, Song Gun Kim, David Neau, Yong Hwan Lee Apr 2012

Molecular Basis Of The Fructose-2,6-Bisphosphatase Reaction Of Pfkfb3: Transition State And The C-Terminal Function, Michael C. Cavalier, Song Gun Kim, David Neau, Yong Hwan Lee

Faculty Publications

The molecular basis of fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (F-2,6-P 2ase) of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB) was investigated using the crystal structures of the human inducible form (PFKFB3) in a phospho-enzyme intermediate state (PFKFB3-P•F-6-P), in a transition state-analogous complex (PFKFB3•AlF 4), and in a complex with pyrophosphate (PFKFB3•PP i) at resolutions of 2.45, 2.2, and 2.3 Å, respectively. Trapping the PFKFB3-P•F-6-P intermediate was achieved by flash cooling the crystal during the reaction, and the PFKFB3•AlF 4 and PFKFB3•PP i complexes were obtained by soaking. The PFKFB3•AlF 4 and PFKFB3•PP i complexes resulted in removing F-6-P from the catalytic pocket. With these structures, the structures of the …

Angiogenic Deficiency And Adipose Tissue Dysfunction Are Associated With Macrophage Malfunction In Sirt1 -/- Mice, Fen Xu, David Burk, Zhanguo Gao, Jun Yin, Xia Zhang, Jianping Weng, Jianping Ye Apr 2012

Angiogenic Deficiency And Adipose Tissue Dysfunction Are Associated With Macrophage Malfunction In Sirt1 -/- Mice, Fen Xu, David Burk, Zhanguo Gao, Jun Yin, Xia Zhang, Jianping Weng, Jianping Ye

Faculty Publications

The histone deacetylase sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) inhibits adipocyte differentiation and suppresses inflammation by targeting the transcription factors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ and nuclear factor κB. Although this suggests that adiposity and inflammation should be enhanced when SIRT1 activity is inactivated in the body, this hypothesis has not been tested in SIRT1 null (SIRT1 -/-) mice. In this study, we addressed this issue by investigating the adipose tissue in SIRT1 -/-mice. Compared with their wild-type littermates, SIRT1 null mice exhibited a significant reduction in body weight. In adipose tissue, the average size of adipocytes was smaller, the content of extracellular matrix …
