Breeding Biologies, Pollinators, And Seed Beetles Of Two Prairie-Clovers, Dalea Ornata And Dalea Searlsiae (Fabaceae: Amorpheae), From The Intermountain West, Usa, James H. Cane, Melissa Weber, Stephanie Miller

Western North American Naturalist

Two prairie-clovers, Dalea ornata (Douglas ex Hook.) Eaton & J. Wright and Dalea searlsiae (A. Gray) Barneby, are perennial forbs found sporadically in the U.S. Intermountain West. Their seed is desirable for use in rangeland
restoration. We experimentally characterized the breeding biologies of D. ornata and D. searlsiae in a common garden, surveyed their pollinator guilds, and sampled their seed predators. The 2 Dalea species, being primarily xenogamous, have comparable pollination requirements. For flowers manually pollinated with outcross pollen, an average of 42% of D. ornata flowers and 39% of D. searlsiae flowers yielded plump large seeds filled with endosperm. …

Gopher Snake Searching Cliff Swallow Nests In East Central Utah, Nicholas J. Czaplewski, Kent S. Smith, John Johnson, Crystal Dockery, Brandon Mason, Ian D. Browne Apr 2012

Gopher Snake Searching Cliff Swallow Nests In East Central Utah, Nicholas J. Czaplewski, Kent S. Smith, John Johnson, Crystal Dockery, Brandon Mason, Ian D. Browne

Western North American Naturalist

We report details of a serendipitous encounter in July 2010 with a gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer) hunting in the mud nests of Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota). The swallow nests occurred beneath a deeply overhung sandstone cliff ledge in a box canyon of Ferron Creek in the shale deserts near Ferron, Emery County, Utah. The inaccessibility of the nests and the movement of the snake to and through them attest to both the extraordinary climbing ability of the gopher snake and the nest site selection and nest construction ability of the swallows.

Alphaviruses, including Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus (VEEV), cause disease in both equine and humans that exhibit overt encephalitis in a significant percentage of cases. Features of the host immune response and tissue-specific responses may contribute to fatal outcomes as well as the development of encephalitis. It has previously been shown that VEEV infection of mice induces transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines genes (e.g., IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-12, iNOS and TNF-α) within 6 h. GSK-3β is a host protein that is known to modulate pro-inflammatory gene expression and has been a therapeutic target in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's. Hence inhibition of GSK-3β …

An Unexpected Function Of The Prader-Willi Syndrome Imprinting Center In Maternal Imprinting In Mice, Mei-Yi Wu, Ming Jiang, Xiaodong Zhang, Arthur L. Beaudet, Ray-Chang Wu Apr 2012

An Unexpected Function Of The Prader-Willi Syndrome Imprinting Center In Maternal Imprinting In Mice, Mei-Yi Wu, Ming Jiang, Xiaodong Zhang, Arthur L. Beaudet, Ray-Chang Wu

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Genomic imprinting is a phenomenon that some genes are expressed differentially according to the parent of origin. Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Angelman syndrome (AS) are neurobehavioral disorders caused by deficiency of imprinted gene expression from paternal and maternal chromosome 15q11–q13, respectively. Imprinted genes at the PWS/AS domain are regulated through a bipartite imprinting center, the PWS-IC and AS-IC. The PWS-IC activates paternal-specific gene expression and is responsible for the paternal imprint, whereas the AS-IC functions in the maternal imprint by allele-specific repression of the PWS-IC to prevent the paternal imprinting program. Although mouse chromosome 7C has a conserved PWS/AS imprinted …

A Heuristic Solution Of The Identifiability Problem Of The Age-Period-Cohort Analysis Of Cancer Occurrence: Lung Cancer Example., Tengiz Mdzinarishvili, Simon Sherman

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

BACKGROUND: The Age-Period-Cohort (APC) analysis is aimed at estimating the following effects on disease incidence: (i) the age of the subject at the time of disease diagnosis; (ii) the time period, when the disease occurred; and (iii) the date of birth of the subject. These effects can help in evaluating the biological events leading to the disease, in estimating the influence of distinct risk factors on disease occurrence, and in the development of new strategies for disease prevention and treatment.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We developed a novel approach for estimating the APC effects on disease incidence rates in the frame of …

Chemoselective Oxidation Of 6,13-Bis(Decylthio) Pentacene, Claire Eunhye Cho Apr 2012

Chemoselective Oxidation Of 6,13-Bis(Decylthio) Pentacene, Claire Eunhye Cho

Theses and Dissertations

Organic semiconductors present much potential for industrial use because of their possible low cost production, Pentacene and pentacene derivatives are promising candidates for organic semiconductor research since their ^-conjugated electronic structures possess small HOMO- LUMO gaps and high field effect mobility. Whereas there is much potential in devices made from pentacenes they do however undergo short lifetimes and poor processability due to photodegradation and poor solubility of pentacene. Previous research has shown that the pentacene lifetime and solubility can be enhanced by arylthio and alkylthio substituents placed on the pentacene backbone. For example 6,13-i?/s(decylthio)pentacene was one of the longest lived …

Comparing Avian Diversity Between Perennial And Ephemeral Water Sources Located Within The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Geoffrey H. Wiseman ^, Jerry D. Johnson, Vanessa L. Lougheed * Apr 2012

Comparing Avian Diversity Between Perennial And Ephemeral Water Sources Located Within The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Geoffrey H. Wiseman ^, Jerry D. Johnson, Vanessa L. Lougheed *

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Water availability in the Chihuahuan Desert is highly variable and dependent on various physical factors. Indio Mountains Research Station (IMRS), located in southeastern Hudspeth County, Texas, contains one perennial water source, Squaw Spring, and at least sixteen man-made ephemeral “tanks” previously used for watering livestock. It was hypothesized that bird diversity would be greater near Squaw Spring, due to continuous water availability, rather than ephemeral tanks where water availability is inconsistent.

The experimental design included a multi-seasonal bird survey by means of visual sightings of different species, backed by photographic evidence to assure accurate identification. Surveys were completed near Squaw …

How Roads Affect The Population Genetic Structure Of The Lizard Uta Stansburiana In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Priscilla D. Duran ^, Kevin W. Floyd, Elizabeth J. Walsh *

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

Urbanization can have significant ecological effects on natural populations, including habitat fragmentation through increased road density. Roads may isolate populations, causing disruption of gene flow, inbreeding, and decreased genetic diversity. In this study we investigate how two roads, interstate highway I-10 and rural country road NM-9, affect population genetic structure of ideblotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) in the northern Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico. Lizards were trapped on both sides of each road, plus one control site/road. Nine microsatellite loci were amplified to determine signatures of disrupted gene flow. Genotypes were obtained for 144 individuals from three sites, I-10 …

Eti‐385 As A Novel Anti‐Emetic Against Drug Induced Emesis, Theresa Fennell, James Lucot, Samantha Spitak, Emily Smith, Teresa Garret

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Drugs currently used to prevent emesis (nausea and vomiting) target only one or a few of the pathways used by emetic stimuli to trigger the reflex. Thus, an anti-emetic drug will only be effective against some stimuli. Prior work determined that 8-OH-DPAT (DPAT, a 5-HT1A agonist) was a universally effective anti-emetic. Although DPAT prevented emesis, it also elicited an extreme anxiety response making it unsuitable for therapeutic use. Presently, there exists no universal anti-emetic drug. We tested a proprietary drug developed from DPAT, ETI-385, which successfully prevented emesis in musk shrews against chemotherapy, drug and motion stimuli. For FDA purposes, …
