Impact Of Hispanic Ethnic Concentration And Socioeconomic Status On Obesity Prevalence In Texas Counties, Jennifer J. Salinas, Elizabeth Rocha, Bassent Abdelbary, Jennifer L. Gay, Ken Sexton

Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to determine whether Hispanic ethnic concentration is associated with a higher prevalence of obesity and, if this relationship exists, whether it is affected by the socioeconomic environment. The study uses the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) linked to 2000 census data to access the relationship between prevalence of obesity, Hispanic ethnic concentration, poverty and level of education at a county-level. The findings suggest that the association of Hispanic ethnic concentration and obesity varies by socioeconomic environment. Although little influence was observed for % poverty, the relationship between Hispanic ethnic concentration and obesity …

Insulin Degludec, The New Generation Basal Insulin Or Just Another Basal Insulin?, Sami N. Nasrallah, L. Raymond Reynolds

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

The advances in recombinant DNA technology have led to an improvement in the properties of currently available long-acting insulin analogs. Insulin degludec, a new generation ultra-long-acting basal insulin, currently in phase 3 clinical trials, has a promising future in clinical use. When compared to its rival basal insulin analogs, a longer duration of action and lower incidence of hypoglycemic events in both type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients has been demonstrated. Its unique mechanism of action is based on multihexamer formation after subcutaneous injection. This reportedly allows for less pharmacodynamic variability and within-subject variability than currently available insulin analogs, …

Prostate Cancer-Specific And Potent Antitumor Effect Of A Dd3-Controlled Oncolytic Virus Harboring The Pten Gene, Miao Ding, Xin Cao, Hai-Neng Xu, Jun-Kai Fan, Hong-Ling Huang, Dong-Qin Yang, Yu-Hua Li, Jian Wang, Runsheng Li, Xin-Yuan Liu Apr 2012

Prostate Cancer-Specific And Potent Antitumor Effect Of A Dd3-Controlled Oncolytic Virus Harboring The Pten Gene, Miao Ding, Xin Cao, Hai-Neng Xu, Jun-Kai Fan, Hong-Ling Huang, Dong-Qin Yang, Yu-Hua Li, Jian Wang, Runsheng Li, Xin-Yuan Liu

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Prostate cancer is a major health problem for men in Western societies. Here we report a Prostate Cancer-Specific Targeting Gene-Viro-Therapy (CTGVT-PCa), in which PTEN was inserted into a DD3-controlled oncolytic viral vector (OV) to form Ad.DD3.E1A.E1B(Δ55)-(PTEN) or, briefly, Ad.DD3.D55-PTEN. The woodchuck post-transcriptional element (WPRE) was also introduced at the downstream of the E1A coding sequence, resulting in much higher expression of the E1A gene. DD3 is one of the most prostate cancer-specific genes and has been used as a clinical bio-diagnostic marker. PTEN is frequently inactivated in primary prostate cancers, which is crucial for prostate cancer progression. Therefore, the Ad.DD3.D55-PTEN …

Fishermen, Politics, And Participation: An Ethnographic Examination Of Commercial Fisheries Management In St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cynthia Grace-Mccaskey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Currently, there is widespread debate regarding the overall status of the world's fisheries, with some researchers projecting their total collapse in only a few decades, and others concluding the situation is not quite as bleak. Additional debates include what strategies should be used to manage fisheries at various scales, and further research is needed to determine which strategies are most appropriate for use in particular situations and locales, as context is critical.

Recently, prominent common pool resources scholars have expressed the need for ethnographic approaches to studying resource management institutions in order to move beyond the current focus of simply …

Roles Of The Drosophila Sk Channel (Dsk) In Courtship Memory, Ahmad N. Abou Tayoun, Claudio Pikielny, Patrick J. Dolph Apr 2012

Roles Of The Drosophila Sk Channel (Dsk) In Courtship Memory, Ahmad N. Abou Tayoun, Claudio Pikielny, Patrick J. Dolph

Dartmouth Scholarship

A role for SK channels in synaptic plasticity has been very well-characterized. However, in the absence of simple genetic animal models, their role in behavioral memory remains elusive. Here, we take advantage of Drosophila melanogaster with its single SK gene (dSK) and well-established courtship memory assay to investigate the contribution of this channel to memory. Using two independent dSK alleles, a null mutation and a dominant negative subunit, we show that while dSK negatively regulates the acquisition of short-term memory 30 min after a short training session, it is required for normal long-term memory 24 h after extended …

Assessing The Effects Of Stress Resilience Training On Visual Discrimination Skills: Implications For Perceptual Resilience In U.S. Warfighters, Andrea Taylor Apr 2012

Assessing The Effects Of Stress Resilience Training On Visual Discrimination Skills: Implications For Perceptual Resilience In U.S. Warfighters, Andrea Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Current military operational environments are highly improvised and constantly evolving, threatening the lives of U.S. warfighters. For instance, since 2001, 60% of all hostile casualties and 65% of hostile injuries in the Middle East theater have been attributed to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). IEDs are powerful physical weapons, and the stressful atmosphere they, and other operational challenges create, can also result in a range of psychological dysfunctions, including anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Not only are these issues concerning for mental health reasons, they are also problematic in terms of combat performance. Extreme arousal (i.e., stress) …

Ultra-Soft 100 Nm Thick Zero Poisson’S Ratio Film With 60% Reversible Compressibility, Chieu Nguyen, Vivek Maheshwari, Ravi Saraf

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

About a 100 nm thick multilayer film of nanoparticle monolayers and polymer layers is shown to behave like cellular-foam with a modulus below 100 KPa. The 1.25 cm radius film adhered to a rigid surface can be compressed reversibly to 60% strain. The more than four orders of magnitude lower modulus compared to its constituents is explained by considering local bending in the (nano)cellular structure, similar to cork and wings of beetles. As the rigidity of the polymer backbone is increased in just four monolayers the modulus of the composite increases by over 70%. Electro-optical map of the strain distribution …

A Model Of Toxic Neuropathy In Drosophila Reveals A Role For Morn4 In Promoting Axonal Degeneration, Martha R.C. Bhattacharya, Josiah Gerdts, Sarah A. Naylor, Emily X. Royse, Sarah Y. Ebstein, Yo Sasaki, Jeffrey Milbrandt, Aaron Diantonio

Open Access Publications

Axonal degeneration is a molecular self-destruction cascade initiated following traumatic, toxic, and metabolic insults. Its mechanism underlies a number of disorders including hereditary and diabetic neuropathies and the neurotoxic side effects of chemotherapy drugs. Molecules that promote axonal degeneration could represent potential targets for therapy. To identify such molecules, we designed a screening platform based on intoxication of Drosophila larvae with paclitaxel (taxol), a chemotherapeutic agent that causes neuropathy in cancer patients. In Drosophila, taxol treatment causes swelling, fragmentation, and loss of axons in larval peripheral nerves. This axonal loss is not due to apoptosis of neurons. Taxol-induced axonal degeneration …

Differentiation Of Capsicum Species Via Protein Extraction And Sds-Page Analysis: A Two-Day Experiment For Undergraduate Biochemistry Laboratories, Trey Polvadore, Brittney P. Cooper, Michele R. Harris

Undergraduate Research Conference

The Capsicum genus is comprised of more than 200 varieties of pepper plant that collectively represent only five cultivated spices. As a result of extensive cross-breeding, an 88% similarity in protein coding DNA has developed. While this has made species determination based solely on physical appearance all but impossible, the 12% difference in protein coding DNA has led to subtle differences in translated protein. SDS-PAGE analysis facilitates the generation of protein banding patterns that, after careful analysis, was used to differentiate one variety of pepper from another. This project was used to distinguish between pepper plant species and was carried …
