We're Still Not There Yet: The Continued Struggle For Black Gay Men To Live Openly In Arkansas And Tennesee, Dominique Antoinette White Apr 2012

We're Still Not There Yet: The Continued Struggle For Black Gay Men To Live Openly In Arkansas And Tennesee, Dominique Antoinette White

Student Theses and Dissertations

Living as a gay man can be difficult for individuals living in the Southern United States due to political conservatism, religious affiliation, and cultural norms. The experiences of gay men not only differ by region but also by race. There is a vast amount of research focusing on what it is like to be gay in America; however, not much attention has been given to the lives of gay black males besides discussion of life on the "down-low" or having a gay relationship that one's heterosexual partner is not aware of. In my study I find that gay black males …

Ecological Factors In Social Skill Acquisition: High School Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Disorders, Sarah K. Anderson, Kari Chiasson Apr 2012

Ecological Factors In Social Skill Acquisition: High School Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Disorders, Sarah K. Anderson, Kari Chiasson

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

The purpose of the study was to develop a grounded theory of the underlying social processes and/or other ecological factors that impact the effectiveness of skill acquisition for students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders in a Midwestern city in the United States. Theory development was based on in-depth investigation of five students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders (EBD), who were taught assertive communication skills. This study examined ecological factors impacting the learning of a new social skill and the socialization skills of students with EBD. Based on the findings of this study, three broad conclusions are offered: (a) students identified …

Poppies And Ptsd: Opioid Influence On A Preclincal Model Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder., Sarah Vunck Apr 2012

Poppies And Ptsd: Opioid Influence On A Preclincal Model Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder., Sarah Vunck

Theses and Dissertations

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that affects over 7.7 million adults and carries an estimated societal cost of $3.1 billion every year. People develop PTSD after exposure to a traumatic event. Alone or combined, approved pharmacotherapies or psychotherapy are somewhat effective, but symptoms for many remain refractory. Emerging evidence suggests that opiate systems may modulate the development and expression of PTSD, and their role can be investigated preclinically. Pavlovian fear conditioning is a preclinical model which elicits behaviors mirroring those that occur in humans during and after exposure to trauma. This presents an experimental tool that can …

Methamphetamine-Associated Psychosis, Kathleen M. Grant, Tricia D. Le Van, Sandra M. Wells, Ming Li, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Howard E. Gendelman, Gustavo Carlo, Rick A. Bevins Apr 2012

Methamphetamine-Associated Psychosis, Kathleen M. Grant, Tricia D. Le Van, Sandra M. Wells, Ming Li, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Howard E. Gendelman, Gustavo Carlo, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Methamphetamine (METH) is a frequent drug of abuse in U.S. populations and commonly associated with psychosis. This may be a factor in frequent criminal justice referrals and lengthy treatment required by METH users. Persecutory delusions and auditory hallucinations are the most consistent symptoms of METH-associated psychosis (MAP). MAP has largely been studied in Asian populations and risk factors have varied across studies. Duration, frequency and amount of use as well as sexual abuse, family history, other substance use, and co-occurring personality and mood disorders are risk factors for MAP. MAP may be unique with its long duration of psychosis and …

Revised Selection Criteria For Candidate Restriction Enzymes In Genome Walking, Ali Taheri, Stephen J. Robinson, Isobel Parkin, Margaret Y. Gruber Apr 2012

Revised Selection Criteria For Candidate Restriction Enzymes In Genome Walking, Ali Taheri, Stephen J. Robinson, Isobel Parkin, Margaret Y. Gruber

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

A new method to improve the efficiency of flanking sequence identification by genome walking was developed based on an expanded, sequential list of criteria for selecting candidate enzymes, plus several other optimization steps. These criteria include: step (1) initially choosing the most appropriate restriction enzyme according to the average fragment size produced by each enzyme determined using in silico digestion of genomic DNA, step (2) evaluating the in silico frequency of fragment size distribution between individual chromosomes, step (3) selecting those enzymes that generate fragments with the majority between 100 bp and 3,000 bp, step (4) weighing the advantages and …

New Dromaeosaurids (Dinosauria: Theropoda) From The Lower Cretaceous Of Utah, And The Evolution Of The Dromaeosaurid Tail, Philip J. Senter, James L. Kirkland, Donald D. Deblieux, Scott Madsen, Natalie Toth Apr 2012

New Dromaeosaurids (Dinosauria: Theropoda) From The Lower Cretaceous Of Utah, And The Evolution Of The Dromaeosaurid Tail, Philip J. Senter, James L. Kirkland, Donald D. Deblieux, Scott Madsen, Natalie Toth

Biological Science Faculty Working Papers

Background: The Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation (Early Cretaceous, Barremian? – Aptian) of Utah has yielded a rich theropod fauna, including the coelurosaur Nedcolbertia justinhofmanni, the therizinosauroid Falcarius utahensis, the troodontid Geminiraptor suarezarum, and the dromaeosaurid Utahraptor ostrommaysorum. Recent excavation has uncovered three new dromaeosaurid specimens. One specimen, which we designate the holotype of the new genus and species Yurgovuchia doellingi, is represented by a partial axial skeleton and a partial left pubis. A second specimen consists of a right pubis and a possibly associated radius. The third specimen consists of a tail skeleton that is unique …
