The Chemical Origin Of Behavior Is Rooted In Abiogenesis, Brian C. Larson, R. Paul Jensen, Niles Lehman
The Chemical Origin Of Behavior Is Rooted In Abiogenesis, Brian C. Larson, R. Paul Jensen, Niles Lehman
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
We describe the initial realization of behavior in the biosphere, which we term behavioral chemistry. If molecules are complex enough to attain a stochastic element to their structural conformation in such as a way as to radically affect their function in a biological (evolvable) setting, then they have the capacity to behave. This circumstance is described here as behavioral chemistry, unique in its definition from the colloquial chemical behavior. This transition between chemical behavior and behavioral chemistry need be explicit when discussing the root cause of behavior, which itself lies squarely at the origins of life and is the foundation …
Screening For Mental Health Problems Among Incarcerated Youth In Nevada: Practice And Policy, Michelle Chino, Jennifer Personius-Zipoy, Denise Tanata
Screening For Mental Health Problems Among Incarcerated Youth In Nevada: Practice And Policy, Michelle Chino, Jennifer Personius-Zipoy, Denise Tanata
Nevada Journal of Public Health
Incarcerated youth in Nevada with serious mental health problems are not being effectively identified. The current study examined the utility of simple screening instruments as a mechanism for identifying incarcerated youth who may have a mental health disorder. Adjudicated youth, incarcerated at each of Nevada’s 12 juvenile detention facilities, participated in the study by completing a demographic questionnaire and a standardized mental health screening instrument: the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument-Version 2 (MAYSI-2). Findings indicate a high prevalence of mental health disorders among incarcerated juveniles in Nevada. Identifying youth with mental health problems is complicated by the lack of a systematic …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Health Care Administration Student Practicum, Christopher R. Cochran, Michelle Sotero
Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Health Care Administration Student Practicum, Christopher R. Cochran, Michelle Sotero
Nevada Journal of Public Health
As the health care industry becomes increasingly complex, many leaders and practitioners in the field are worried about the quality and preparation of health care administration graduates (Robbins, Bradley, & Spicer, 2001). Academic health care administration programs prepare students for a professional career in the health care field. One of the biggest challenges for university health care administration programs is to meet industry needs by effectively incorporating practical skills and knowledge into the academic curricula. For students, coursework provides some insight into the demands of the industry, but they also require hands-on experience to be relevant in a highly competitive …

The Multiple Perspectives Of The Lived Experience Of Civil Detainment, Linda Love
The Multiple Perspectives Of The Lived Experience Of Civil Detainment, Linda Love
Theses and Dissertations
Civil detainment can be confusing, frustrating, and scary especially if the criteria for civil detainment are being applied inconsistently. A constructivist inquiry, using qualitative techniques as the primary information gathering method, was conducted to gain a better understanding about the experience of civil detainment. Twenty-five stakeholders participated in this research effort. Questions regarding the meaning of civil detainment were explored in five stakeholder groups; individuals with mental illness, families, mental health professionals, first responders and judicial professionals. Civil detainment is described as a “necessary evil” however, mandated treatment is also described as a means to restore dignity. Implications are included …
Attica State Correctional Facility: The Causes And Fallout Of The Riot Of 1971, Kathleen E. Slade
Attica State Correctional Facility: The Causes And Fallout Of The Riot Of 1971, Kathleen E. Slade
The Exposition
Everyone has heard the rallying cry “Attica! Attica!” These are words shouted in protest by many in the 1970s including John Lennon in his song “Attica State” in 1971 and Al Pacino in the movie “Dog day Afternoon” in 1975. But what happened at Attica State Correctional Facility in the rural town of Attica, NY in 1971 to cause the bloodiest day in American history up to that time? A prison built to be escape proof and virtually riot proof in 1931 exploded just forty years later in a violent four day riot that ended in a bloody massacre of …

Issues Of Cost & Access In Canadian’S Social Investment: Lessons For The Civil Justice System, Sana Affara, Shamsuddin Ahmed, Sabreena Delhon, Lesley Jacobs
Canadian Forum on Civil Justice
Historically, the dominant discourse within the welfare state was one of redistribution and the paternalistic protection of citizens against social risks such as unemployment, illness, disability and retirement. Over the past few decades, changes in social policy have been introduced which are directed towards “social investment” and empowering citizens rather than protecting them. The social investment model focuses on investing public money and time in social programs such as housing, healthcare, employment insurance, child benefits and education with an eye to providing all citizens with opportunities that will enable them to take responsibility for themselves and their families. In practice, …

Jeffrey Dahmer: Psychopathy And Neglect, Tamara Higgs
Jeffrey Dahmer: Psychopathy And Neglect, Tamara Higgs
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
It is the intent of this paper to examine the relationship between Jeffrey Dahmer's Childhood neglect, his fascination with death, and its later influence on his adult psychopathic behavior. After defining the nature of serial killers and the impact of childhood abuse combined with a fascination with death, the focus of this case study will shift to the long term impact of the abuse and neglect suffered by American serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer. Using the social learning theory, the author will examine how this neglect and abuse tie into his later life as a sexual serial killer. Additionally, the theories …

Restorative Justice And Recidivism: A Meta-Analysis, Kristin Bain
Restorative Justice And Recidivism: A Meta-Analysis, Kristin Bain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Restorative Justice is an approach to resolving conflict that has become increasingly relevant as both financial and social costs associated with crime have continued to rise. As alternative methods of managing crime are being considered and implemented there is a call from policy makers for evidence that those programs are indeed the best practice. Although there is a significant amount of research on restorative justice, synthesis of that information is lacking which impedes full understanding of the potential of the impact and role of this approach. A central argument is that restorative based programs produce benefits because they reduce recidivism …

Jurisprudence That Necessarily Embodies Moral Judgment: The Eighth Amendment, Catholic Teaching, And Death Penalty Discourse, Kurt M. Denk
Notre Dame Law Review
The article compares the U.S. Jurisprudence with the death penalty teaching of the Catholic Church through a court case of Patrick Kennedy v. Louisiana Supreme Court. It focuses on the Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence and argues on the translated approach of Catholic Church to advance the death penalty discourse. The article also discusses moral judgment embodied by the Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence.

Medicaid Coverage For Individuals In Jail Pending Disposition: Opportunities For Improved Health And Health Care At Lower Costs, Marsha Regenstein, Jade Christie-Maples
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides an unprecedented opportunity for millions of poor men and women to obtain insurance coverage to address their substantial acute, chronic, physical and behavioral health care needs. The ACA raises Medicaid eligibility levels to 133 percent of poverty, thereby enabling adults with or without children to qualify for coverage. A substantial percentage of the newly eligible population will be jail-involved individuals – people who have had interactions with the legal system over the course of a year, including as an inmate at a county or city jail. Many of these individuals are …
