Reunifying From Behind Bars: A Quantitative Study Of The Relationship Between Parental Incarceration, Service Use, And Foster Care Reunification, Amy C. D’Andrade, M. Valdez
Faculty Publications
Incarcerated parents attempting to reunify with their children in foster care can find it difficult to complete the activities on their court-ordered case plans, such as drug treatment services and visitation with children. Although much has been written regarding the obstacles that are likely to interfere with reunification for incarcerated parents, very little quantitative research has examined the topic. This study uses secondary data to examine the incarceration experiences and reunification outcomes of a sample of 225 parents in one large urban California county. In multivariate analysis controlling for problems and demographics, incarcerated parents were less likely to reunify with …

Transnational Public Sector Knowledge Networks: Knowledge And Information Sharing In A Multi-Dimensional Context, Sharon S. Dawes, Mohammed Gharawi, G. Brian Burke
Center for Technology in Government
Government Information Quarterly, Volume 29, Issue 1, Pages 112-120, January (special issue) 2012.Sharing of knowledge, information, and practices across cultural and national boundaries has become a means to address critical global problems. As government agencies increasingly collaborate with international counterparts on these issues, transnational knowledge and information sharing networks grow in importance as mechanisms for collaboration. This paper explores the nature of Transnational Public Sector Knowledge Networks (TPSKNs) and identifies critical contextual factors that shape their performance. In these networks, each participating organization operates within complex national, organizational, and information contexts. The contextual differences between participants produce distances in culture, …
Effects Of Prisoner Location On Visitation Patterns, Anjannette Monroe
Effects Of Prisoner Location On Visitation Patterns, Anjannette Monroe
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This study explores factors related to visitation patterns for prisoners under Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC). A quantitative data analysis was conducted using a database provided by the ODRC which encompassed visits and demographics on incarcerated prisoners (N=50,551) from January 2006 until July 19, 2011. Qualitative analyses depicted a hypothetical visitor’s experience including calculations of transit distances/duration for inmate visits. Hypotheses posited for this study included: (1) there is a negative correlation between travel distances/costs and visitation frequency; (2) inmate relocation to more distant facilities negatively affects visitation patterns; (3) inmate visitation will be greater during early incarceration …

Regulating At The Margins: Non-Traditional Kinship And The Legal Regulation Of Intimate And Family Life, Courtney Megan Cahill
Regulating At The Margins: Non-Traditional Kinship And The Legal Regulation Of Intimate And Family Life, Courtney Megan Cahill
Scholarly Publications
This Article offers a new theory of how the law attempts to control intimate and family life and uses that theory to argue why certain laws might be unconstitutional. Specifically, it contends that by regulating non-traditional relationships and practices that receive little or no constitutional protection— same-sex relationships, domestic partnerships, de facto parenthood, and nonsexual procreation—the law is able to express its normative ideals about all marriage, parenthood, and procreation. By regulating non-traditional kinship, then, the law can be aspirational in a way that the Constitution would ordinarily prohibit and can attempt to channel all of us in ways that …

The Cost Of Justice: Weighing The Costs Of Fair And Effective Resolution To Legal Problems, Canadian Forum On Civil Justice
The Cost Of Justice: Weighing The Costs Of Fair And Effective Resolution To Legal Problems, Canadian Forum On Civil Justice
Canadian Forum on Civil Justice
There is a growing belief that our civil and family justice system2 is in crisis. Evidence is mounting that the public cannot afford to resolve their legal problems through the formal processes of our courts, and it is unclear whether they are accessing other civil justice system services to reach resolution or whether their legal problems remain unresolved. This is a vital concern not only for the individuals who are unable to pursue their claims, but also for the health, economic, and social well-being of all Canadians. There is increasing evidence that unresolved disputes have a significant negative impact on …

Reducing The Use Of Seclusion And Restraint In Segregated Special Education School Settings Through Implementation Of The Collaborative Problem Solving Model, Bethann Glew
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The intent of this study was to determine whether implementation of the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) model, that has proven successful in psychiatric settings, was equally effective in reducing restrictive practices in public school settings. Many peer-reviewed, published reports suggest that educators are poorly prepared to manage the extremely challenging behaviors of aggression and non-compliance, which are common in students classified with an emotional disturbance (ED). Too often educators rely on ineffective, potentially harmful interventions such as seclusion and restraint, which adversely impact students as well as staff. The nonrandom sample was comprised of students enrolled in two segregated special …

Predicting Risk To Reoffend: Establishing The Validity Of The Postive Achievement Change Tool, Julie H. Martin
Predicting Risk To Reoffend: Establishing The Validity Of The Postive Achievement Change Tool, Julie H. Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there has been increased reliance on the use of risk assessment in the juvenile justice system to predict and classify offenders based on their risk to reoffend. Over the years, the predictive validity of risk assessments has improved through the inclusion of actuarial assessment and dynamic risk factors. The predictive validity of certain assessments, such as the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI), has been well established through numerous replication studies on different subgroups of the population. The validity of other instruments, such as the Positive Achievement Change Tool (PACT), is in its infancy having only …
Direct And Indirect Controls As Measures Of Attachment: Gender, Delinquency, And The Parental Social Bond, Rebekah Hazlett-Knudsen
Direct And Indirect Controls As Measures Of Attachment: Gender, Delinquency, And The Parental Social Bond, Rebekah Hazlett-Knudsen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research specific to gender and violent juvenile delinquency is sparse due to two factors: a substantially higher incidence of delinquent male violence and the cost associated with drawing adequate female samples is frequently prohibitive (Howell, 2003). Gender-differences are explored in a sample of arrested juveniles using an expanded measure of parental attachment [bond]. The dimensions of emotional attachment, supervision, and time-involvement with a selfreported caregiver are explored for between group differences and association with recognized risk factors for juvenile delinquency. Findings indicate that while statistically significant between-group differences are not found in the presentation of attachment, descriptive differences do exist. …
Correlates To Police And Correctional Officer Burnout: An Exploratory Study, James Mcdonald
Correlates To Police And Correctional Officer Burnout: An Exploratory Study, James Mcdonald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study builds on the small but growing body of research examining the antecedents and effects of burnout on police and corrections officers. A review of the extant literature on burnout in general and on the literature exploring police and correctional officer burnout in particular identified several variables that contribute to the social-psychological condition of burnout. The variables identified in the literature review were grouped according to biographical factors (gender, race/ethnicity, and age), biographical stressors (marital status and level of education), organizational factors (occupational field, agency size, tenure, and rank), workplace stressors (recent promotions, transfers or discipline, and perceptions of …

An Analysis Of Indiana Schools Implementing Alternative Teacher Evaluation Systems., Corey Wade Austin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this content analysis research project was to determine if there were predictive qualities of the demographic groupings; student population, free and reduced percentage, and geographic setting on the teacher evaluation tools that are an alternative to the Indiana RISE model. This study surveyed Indiana superintendents regarding their anticipated 2012-13 evaluation tool. The schools that designated they would be using an alternative teacher evaluation tool were then asked to make available their research of their document for comparison to a research-based template. The research-based template is a derivative of the work of Danielson (2007), Marshall (2005), and Marzano …
