The Bottling Craze: Exposing The Environmental Effects Of Bottled Vs. Tap Water, Michele Paccagnini

Student Theses 2001-2013

Americans take water for granted on a daily basis when they can go to the vending machine or grocery store and pick up a cold bottle of water to enjoy. What people do not normally consider is where this water comes from or what chemicals are used to make the plastic bottle. Some may believe that they are doing something noteworthy when choosing a brand like Poland Spring that boasts “30% less plastic” used in their product, along with choosing a brand that uses smaller labels to save paper. The Poland Spring website claims that they are “drop by drop…one …

Business Conference Papers

As online media increasingly assumes dominance in the marketplace, we use the case study of French company Le 10 Sport to explore the complexities associated with transition from print to online media and the impact on brand community. Le 10 Sport is a sport media company that has successfully gone online. As traditional print media outlets are increasingly pressured by the need to abandon existing readerships and go online, the essential question explored in this paper is can a sports media producer build and maintain its brand community while transitioning to the online platform?

The findings suggest the transition from …

Community Participation And Travel Choice: An Analysis Of Central Florida New Urban And Conventional Suburban Residents, Laura P. Mikovsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the built environment and social and transportation outcomes when comparing traditional and conventional suburban neighborhoods, but much remains to be learned about whether New Urbanism can produce similar results. Among studies where new urban neighborhoods have been assessed, most have centered on regions with highly-utilized public transit systems and with climates that are amenable to utilitarian physical activity. This research sought to build on the existing research base through direct comparison of new urban and conventional suburban neighborhoods in central Florida, a region with an under-developed transit system and a climate that renders …

Sustainable Activism: The Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Laura Feldman

Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers

This is a proposal for a community/university partnership which would integrate education and activism, "Sustainable Activism" into the PSU sustainability curriculum. This collaboration would provide students and community members with the opportunity to share expertise and resources in addressing the dangerous transportation and storage of nuclear wastes in our bio-region. Through place-based, participatory learning activities, such as a nuclear pilgrimage to Hanford, we will renew and celebrate our relationship with the ecosystems and communities along the Columbia River, and begin to heal the sacrificial landscape that is Hanford.

Working Trees For Communities

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Today, communities are challenged with accommodating new growth while maintaining the integrity of existing neighbor-hoods. Accommodating health, safety, transportation, quality of life, economics, environmental quality and infrastructure development can often lead to land use conflicts. Compromises are often needed to achieve a workable plan.

Today, community residents, businesses, rural landowners and local leaders must look beyond their own backyards. What is done by one resident or business can affect the community and the watershed. The cumulative effects of many individual actions can have significant impact on the overall landscape.

Working Trees for Communities are proven agroforestry technologies that are being …

Another Way' An Ethnographic Portrait Of Community Dynamics, Sustainability, And Percieved Quality Of Life At Inanitah And Earthaven Ecovillage, Jeanne La Roche

Theses & ETDs

Economic concepts, such as standard of living and the capacity to consume have often been used as a basis for measuring quality of life or human well-being. This thesis examines how standard of living, quality of life, and sustainability intersect through the exploration of "ecovillages." As sustainability-oriented intentional communities, ecovillages attempt to reduce their consumption and cultivate alternative value-systems and lifestyles to enhance their quality of life and ameliorate their ecological footprints. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted at two ecovillages: InanItah, located on Isla Ometepe, Nicaragua, and Earthaven Ecovillage located in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Through participant-observation and informal interviews, I …

The Enduring Landscape The Archaeology Of Seminole Ethnogenesis In West-Central Florida, Michael Wass Jan 2012

The Enduring Landscape The Archaeology Of Seminole Ethnogenesis In West-Central Florida, Michael Wass

Theses & ETDs

The Seminole Tribe of Florida, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, and the Independent Traditional Seminole Nation of Florida are the descendants of the people who were not sent to the Indian Territory along the Gulf Coast route of the Trail of Tears. The origins of the Unconquered Seminoles are contested with popular, scholarly, and indigenous understandings offering differing perspectives. As a result of the confusions created by the colonial encounter in the American Southeast, the historical record has impacted earlier understandings of the origins of the Seminoles. This thesis contributes to uncovering its 19th-century history by focusing on …

Impacts Of Transit Oriented Developments (Tod) And Mixed Use Centers (Muc) In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex On Housing Values And Demographic Composition, Narasimha Pratap Mandapaka

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Suburban sprawl was attributed to be the cause of number of problems such as traffic congestion, depletion of natural resources, and decreasing air quality. Over the past two decades, policy makers and smart growth proponents encouraged Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) and Mixed Use Centers (MUC) to increase transit ridership and development density; revitalize inner-city neighborhoods; improve environmental quality and livability; and to counteract suburban sprawl and real estate market forces in various communities in the U.S. Though many policy makers, urban planners, environmentalists see significant opportunities in sustainable development, there have been concerns related to affordability of housing combined with transportation, …

Community Archives And The Limitations Of Identity: Considering Discursive Impact On Material Needs, Cristine N. Paschild Jan 2012

Community Archives And The Limitations Of Identity: Considering Discursive Impact On Material Needs, Cristine N. Paschild

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

This article examines how a postmodern-influenced discourse of identity shapes and influences critical analysis of community archives, both internally and externally, and asks if the accompanying terms of engagement shift focus, to negative effect, from the more pressing needs and challenges of these institutions and projects. Looking to archival professional literature and to a recent self-assessment of the Japanese American National Museum, the article argues that an overarching emphasis on questions of identity can distract community institutions from pragmatic evaluations of sustainable practice and can inadvertently mire archivists in a marginalizing rhetoric that blurs the issues at hand.

Finding Common Ground Part I: Understanding Growth Centers In Rhode Island, Edgar Adams, Brian Boisvert

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Abstract: A successful Growth Management strategy must seek to find "Common Ground" between the needs of growing communities and the natural environment that supports them, between the past and the future and between the desires for social and environmental justice. In short, they seek a more sustainable way forward. 2011 marks the five-year anniversary of the introduction of Rhode Island's Land Use 2025 State Guide Plan. With this plan, Rhode Island adopted a hybrid solution to address the needs of the unique range of Urban, Suburban and Rural communities within its borders. Urban and suburban communities were accommodated within a …

Feminist Legal Realism, Mae C. Quinn Jan 2012

Feminist Legal Realism, Mae C. Quinn

Journal Articles

This Article begins to rethink current conceptions of two of the most significant legal movements in this country1—Legal Realism and Feminist Jurisprudence. The story of Legal Realism has been retold for decades. Authors have dedicated countless books,2 law review articles,3 and blog posts4 to the subject. Legal and other scholars repeatedly have attempted to define better the movement and ascertain its adherents. Although the usual suspects— Karl Llewellyn, Roscoe Pound, and Jerome Frank—are almost always a part of the conversation, surprisingly few agree on the totality of Realism’s personage or parameters. The lists of those considered realists— and there are …
