The Relationship Between Pre- And Post-Matriculation Factors And College Student Retention In A Small, Technical, Public Institution, Tara Hisert Winter

Education Doctoral

Despite the volume of research on college retention, additional investigation is warranted as many institutions continue to be plagued by poor retention rates. This study investigated the impact of pre- and post-matriculation factors on student retention at SUNY Cobleskill. The focus of the study was on the associate degree students and includes variables such as financial aid type and amount, and college choice. Statistical procedures such as Chi Square, Kendall’s Tau and Cramer’s V were employed during the data analysis. This research adds to the existing body of research by studying a small, regional, state-assisted institution that focuses on teaching. …

Faculty Perceptions Of Adult Learner Experiences In The Classroom: A National Comparison Between Part-Time And Full-Time Faculty At Community Colleges, Sterling Jasper

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare full and part-time community college faculty perceptions to a question set forth in the 2012 national Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE) study of the degree to which adult student life experiences contribute to (a) learning effectively on their own and (b) understanding themselves. Higher education institutions are facing challenging times due to education budgets bring slashed, increasing diverse student populations, more part-time faculty being hired and reduced resources for professional development. The qualities of effective educational practices including teaching styles within community colleges are a critical component of …

Conceptualizing A Measurement Tool To Assess Intragroup Rejection Concerns, Angel Gonzalez Aug 2012

Conceptualizing A Measurement Tool To Assess Intragroup Rejection Concerns, Angel Gonzalez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Social scientists have long demonstrated that the experience of rejection hurts emotionally, socially, and even physiologically. Recent studies have shown that rejection from a highly essential ingroup has a stronger, negative impact on emotional well-being than rejection from a less essential ingroup or outgroup (Bernstein et al. | 2010). While providing insight into the general process of rejection, much of this work has not accounted for the moderating role of the individual in determining the impact of rejection. In order to assess the impact of individual-level concerns regarding intragroup rejection, a psychometrically valid measurement tool to capture these individual-level concerns …

Realistic Cultural Threat And Opposition To Immigration In The U.S., Ben Jordan Newman Aug 2012

Realistic Cultural Threat And Opposition To Immigration In The U.S., Ben Jordan Newman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation explores the realistic dimensions of the cultural threats posed by immigrants and their impacts upon Americans' immigration policy preferences. Cultural threat, at present, is an under-theorized concept within the opinion research on immigration. The existing literature conceptualizes the cultural threats posed by immigrants largely in terms of social identity and symbolic politics theories, where immigrants are cast as posing a collective level threat to the American identity and its related symbols. What remains largely under-developed is a theoretical and empirical exploration of the more tangible and realistically rooted cultural threats posed by immigrants to individual native born citizens. …

Cruce??Os Into Cambas: Regionalism And Revolutionary Nationalism In Santa Cruz De La Sierra, Bolivia (1935-1959), Hernan Pruden Aug 2012

Cruce??Os Into Cambas: Regionalism And Revolutionary Nationalism In Santa Cruz De La Sierra, Bolivia (1935-1959), Hernan Pruden

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores the relationship between a regional elite and the central state, focusing on Santa Cruz, a resource-rich department in Bolivia's eastern lowlands. It traces this relationship from 1935 to 1959, a period marked by the region's transformation from a marginalized space--in both the political territory and the national imagination--to a privileged place driving national development. The regionalist trends that have long shaped the historiography tend overlook the critical role played by the central state in fomenting economic development in Santa Cruz. By examining the relationship between the regional elite, the central state, and the U.S. government, this study …

Captivity, Adoption, Marriage And Identity: Native American Children In Mormon Homes, 1847-1900., Michael Kay Bennion

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Indigenes of North America's Great Basin developed a way of life based on the available resources the Basin provided. Their culture and customs provided a stable means of understanding and interacting with nature and men. Their myths elaborated on expectations, hopes, and fears, in real and metaphorical ways, as evidenced by stories of the trickster Coyote. As Great Basin bands contacted Europeans, they adjusted their resource gathering based on new technologies, such as horses and guns, as well as their myths to cope with change. This process entailed some adjustment in their perceptions of the world around them and …

Language Of Instruction Policies: Discourse And Power, Katherine Ann Dockweiler Aug 2012

Language Of Instruction Policies: Discourse And Power, Katherine Ann Dockweiler

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study identified the control structures and power relationships that exist in four state language of instruction policies using a neo-institutional and postmodern framework. Policies selected include two states with English-only instruction and two states without. Critical discourse analysis was applied in three phases (individual case, within-group, between group) using a Layers of Analysis Framework. Three key findings emerged. First, policy discourse has the potential to positively or negatively impact students. Second, issues of control and power emerge when misalignments exist between the state and society. Third, discourse style alone does not dictate a state's relationship to society. Recommendations include …

Blurring Boundaries: Mexican-American Border Patrol Agents Performing Border Guard Roles And Experiencing Emotional Labor, Aaron Hockman Aug 2012

Blurring Boundaries: Mexican-American Border Patrol Agents Performing Border Guard Roles And Experiencing Emotional Labor, Aaron Hockman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

As of 2008 the Border Patrol (BP) consisted of an unprecedented Hispanic majority due to heavy recruiting efforts among bilingual Mexican-American populations. Within the Mexico-U.S. border region where opportunities are otherwise limited a career with the BP provides the prospect of upward class mobility. This thesis explores the subjective experiences of seven Mexican-American BP agents from the El Paso Sector, ethnographically examining how they manage emotions to perform border guard roles. I argue that participants' subjective experiences offer insight into the larger structural forces that constrain role performance, the meaning of American identity, and the boundaries that prejudice division over …

Cyberbullying Policy In Public Schools, Alison Humphries Aug 2012

Cyberbullying Policy In Public Schools, Alison Humphries

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many schools and school districts have had direct experience with the negative psychological effects of cyberbullying in their schools, ranging from high profile suicides to lower profile incidents that affect the ability of students to receive an education. Federal, state, and local regulations, as well as mandates from state educational agencies, require schools and school districts to address cyberbullying. Experts advocate that schools play a major role in addressing cyberbullying with anti-bullying policies in general and anti-cyberbullying policies in particular. This study presents case study portraits of two exemplary school districts, with a comparison to similar school districts, suggesting that …

International Human Rights Law And Social Movements: States' Resistance And Civil Society's Insistence, Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Claire Whitlinger, Alwyn Lim Aug 2012

International Human Rights Law And Social Movements: States' Resistance And Civil Society's Insistence, Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Claire Whitlinger, Alwyn Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This review examines recent scholarship on the rise of international human rights law and proposes that social movements have played critical roles both in elevating the standards of human rights in international law and in leveraging these standards into better local practices. Institutionalization of universal human rights principles began in the immediate post–World War II period, in which civil society actors worked with powerful states to establish human rights as a key guiding principle of the international community and to ensure the actors' continuing participation in international human rights institutions. The subsequent decades saw various hurdles arise in international politics, …

Traumatic Infidelities: Translating The Literature Of The Armenian Genocide, Shushan Avagyan Aug 2012

Traumatic Infidelities: Translating The Literature Of The Armenian Genocide, Shushan Avagyan

Theses and Dissertations - English

This dissertation argues that any engagement with the diasporic literature of the Armenian genocide entails raising the question of translatability, developing critical lenses for reading against domesticating effects, and locating discontinuities that expose the translation as being a replacement of inassimilable experience with language(s).

Chapter one lays the ground for a translational approach to the study of the literature of the Armenian genocide on several levels: first, a text must be recognized as a site of verbal translation, or the replacement of the "foreign" experience with an intelligible language; second, it must be analyzed as a site of intralingual translation, …

The Free Preschool Year In Ireland: The Perspectives Of Early Childhood Educators And Policymakers, Martina Ozonyia Aug 2012

The Free Preschool Year In Ireland: The Perspectives Of Early Childhood Educators And Policymakers, Martina Ozonyia

Dissertations

This thesis explores the introduction of the Free Preschool Year (FPY) in Ireland from the early childhood 'educators' and 'policymakers' perspectives. Under the new FPY initiative introduced in 2010, all children between the ages of 3.2 - 4.7 are offered free preschool hours for a period of one year prior to their entrance into primary school. This research identified the need to study the introduction of FPY as research into this topic to date has been limited. The purpose of this research was to understand the rationale behind this new initiative as well as exploring the issues of 'qualification requirements', …

Creating A Millennial Generation Contextualized Church Culture, Christopher Deitsch Aug 2012

Creating A Millennial Generation Contextualized Church Culture, Christopher Deitsch

Masters Theses

The Millennial generation, or Generation Y as some people know them, is the biggest generation in the United States of America history. As they flood schools, universities, and the job market it is easy to see that there are major differences between them and previous generations. Simultaneously, the church in America has hundreds of individual churches each year closing and tens of thousands each year declining; most churches are ceasing to grow. The inability to reach Millennials is one of the reasons for this decline. This thesis purposes to give a snapshot of the Millennial generation, overview a few of …

Gifted Hispanic Identity: Exploring Relationships Among Resilience, Goals And Academic Orientation, Matthew Forrester Aug 2012

Gifted Hispanic Identity: Exploring Relationships Among Resilience, Goals And Academic Orientation, Matthew Forrester

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological analysis was to explore the identity development of gifted Hispanic male students in the middle school setting. The study used a survey, multiple interviews and observations, along with focus group data to acquire data in four principle areas: academic orientation, ethnic identity, resilience and goals. Results indicate the importance of resilience as an interactive element in the process of identity development, as well as the importance of ethnic identity exploration and long-term goal setting in formulating a high achieving academic orientation. Other emergent themes such as language use and discrimination are also discussed in light …

Comparing Single-Sex And Reformed Coeducation: A Constitutional Analysis, Nancy Chi Cantalupo Aug 2012

Comparing Single-Sex And Reformed Coeducation: A Constitutional Analysis, Nancy Chi Cantalupo

San Diego Law Review

One of the most enduring educational debates of the past three decades has dealt with the legality and advisability of sex-segregated education. This debate can often look confusing, given a large number of debaters and the diversity of their perspectives and agendas. More than this diversity, however, the debate is confusing because the debate has been structured as a contest between the "innovation" of sex-segregated education and status quo coeducation. Missing from the debate is a comparison between reformed coeducation and a single-sex alternative, a comparison that is markedly more useful in determining what ought to be done about the …

Improving Ethics Education In Accounting: Lessons From Medicine And Law, Chunhui Liu, Lee J. Yao, Nan Hu Aug 2012

Improving Ethics Education In Accounting: Lessons From Medicine And Law, Chunhui Liu, Lee J. Yao, Nan Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The purpose of this paper is to offer accounting educators additional perspectives for ethics education by considering teaching approaches from medicine and law. It takes the form of literature review and argument. The paper finds that ethics education in accounting shows deficiencies in terms of code-bound content, less systematic formal training, less informal hands-on training, and less usage of partnering in comparison to ethics education in medicine and law, thereby producing students with higher moral cognitive capabilities. Based on these findings, the authors provide some recommendations for improvement.

Understanding The Pathoecological Relationship Between Ancient Diet And Modern Diabetes Through Coprolite Analysis: A Case Example From Antelope Cave, Mojave County, Arizona, Karl J. Reinhard, Keith L. Johnson, Sara Leroy-Toren, Kyle Wieseman, Isabel Teixeira-Santos, Mônica Vieira Aug 2012

Understanding The Pathoecological Relationship Between Ancient Diet And Modern Diabetes Through Coprolite Analysis: A Case Example From Antelope Cave, Mojave County, Arizona, Karl J. Reinhard, Keith L. Johnson, Sara Leroy-Toren, Kyle Wieseman, Isabel Teixeira-Santos, Mônica Vieira

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The elevated prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in Native Americans of the Southwest has been explained by several authors in terms of a dietary change from preindustrial traditional foods to modern foods. Physiology adapted to traditional foods became deleterious during the process of modernization. Although several versions of this hypothesis exist, they all relate to the rise in modern NIDDM with change from prehistoric subsistence practices to modern dietary practices. This is especially true for the Southwestern desert tribes of Arizona and New Mexico. Coprolite analysts have been recovering the sort of data needed by diabetes researchers to explore …

The Social Context Of Smoking: Measuring Social Capital Among College Students, Traci Dawn Jarrett Aug 2012

The Social Context Of Smoking: Measuring Social Capital Among College Students, Traci Dawn Jarrett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social capital is an ecological theory that explains access to resources as a result of social relationships between individuals and communities. The appeal of social capital across scientific disciplines, including public health, lies in its ability to account for multiple individual and ecological factors in relation to health outcomes, economic and social disparity, and social empowerment as a result of social connections. However, scientists do not agree on the most appropriate indicators of social capital, and a panel of experts tasked with developing a methodological approach to measure social capital indicate that measurement should be context specific. Currently, there are …

Remittance Activity Among Brazilians In The Us And Canada, Igor Ryabov Aug 2012

Remittance Activity Among Brazilians In The Us And Canada, Igor Ryabov

Sociology Faculty Publications

This comparative study uses data collected in 1990 and 1991 to examine the remittance behavior of Brazilians who had recently arrived in Canada and the United States. These data permit an examination of remittance activity among immigrants relatively soon after their arrival in a pair of host destinations. Prior to contrasting the remittance activity of these newly arrived immigrants, we first document the high degree of similarity between the two groups at their time of arrival; a point that becomes important when contrasting their divergent outcomes. Next, this study contributes to the research literature on micro-level remittance patterns and behaviors …
