Counsellors’ Perceptions Of Counselling Western Australian Drug Court Clients, Katherine Carroll Jan 2012

Counsellors’ Perceptions Of Counselling Western Australian Drug Court Clients, Katherine Carroll

School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations

The Drug Court of Western Australia provides treatment and diversionary options to offenders whose addiction to drugs and/or alcohol has played a part in their offending. There are concerns regarding the potential impacts on the therapeutic relationship when counselling a court-referred client and whether or not court-mandated counselling is effective in assisting clients to address their drug use and offending behaviour. Ten counsellors of drug court referred clients were interviewed to identify the counsellors’ perceptions of drug court referred clients and the potential impact on the therapeutic relationship and effectiveness of counselling. Experiences Of Parenting Among Burmese Refugee Mothers In A Facilitated Playgroup, Beth Mclaughlin Jan 2012

Experiences Of Parenting Among Burmese Refugee Mothers In A Facilitated Playgroup, Beth Mclaughlin

School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations

Psychological literature suggests that parenting in an unfamiliar culture can be one of the more significant challenges experienced by refugee families (Lewig, Arney, & Salveron, 2010; Renzaho, & Vignjevic, 2011). Such parenting difficulties are often compounded by a perceived lack of social support. In response to this, emerging research has identified facilitated playgroup programs as instrumental tools for assisting families with resettlement in their new host context. However, the focused exploration of how such programs support parenting, particularly amongst refugee mothers from specific ethnic groups, has largely been overlooked. Through adopting a qualitative methodology, the proposed interpretive phenomenological study aims …

Maternal Humanitarian Entrants “Me Time”: The Ways Social Support Works In A Facilitated Playgroup, Annmarie La Rosa Jan 2012

Maternal Humanitarian Entrants “Me Time”: The Ways Social Support Works In A Facilitated Playgroup, Annmarie La Rosa

School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations

This study explored how maternal humanitarian entrants (MHE) ascribe meanings to the ways social support works in a facilitated playgroup context. The secondary research question addressed the extent to which accounts of playgroup support could be explained by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (BEST). A focus group followed by case study and follow-up interviews provided the women, staff and stakeholders the opportunity to share their narratives. Rich descriptions of their "lived" experience were central to the research purpose. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was employed to validate the ascribed meanings of ways social support manifested in the playgroup. The role of BEST contributed …

The Value Of A Master’S Degree To Recreation Professionals, Camilla J. Hodge, Brian J. Hill, Christian Brinton

Faculty Publications

This study assessed the nature of the relationship between earning advanced degrees and career outcomes such as salary, job satisfaction, social capital, and human capital among professionals in the parks and recreation field. Agencies, excluding educational institutions, were identified via an Internet search for parks and recreation agencies in urban areas. Tyrone And Vivian Brown: A Person-In-Environment Retrospective, Tyrone Brown Jan 2012

Tyrone And Vivian Brown: A Person-In-Environment Retrospective, Tyrone Brown

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

I, like most of my family, never valued pictures, documents and artifacts from the past. Whether they were placed in a cheap photo album or simply cast away in a box, their value went unknown. This project is an attempt to make up for lost time by archiving. Archiving pertains to the preserving and storing of documents or records relating to the activities, business dealings, etc., of a person, family, corporation, association, community, or nation (Archiving, 2012). As I chronicled the lives of my wife and me, many memories were re-discovered. I inserted valuable photos, documents and personal correspondence. This …

Challenges Of "Sameness": Pitfalls And Benefits To Assumed Connections In Lawyering, Carwina Weng, Lynn Barenberg, Alexis Anderson Jan 2012

Challenges Of "Sameness": Pitfalls And Benefits To Assumed Connections In Lawyering, Carwina Weng, Lynn Barenberg, Alexis Anderson

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Individuals are drawn to connect with other people because of shared experiences and personal characteristics. These connections often help people establish rapport, trust, and engagement. Surely these same benefits would apply in the lawyer-client relationship where a lawyer’s ability to find common links with her client would facilitate the lawyering process.

Perhaps that is true, but not necessarily and not without some potential costs. As clinical teachers, we have become increasingly wary that assumptions attributable to sameness can complicate lawyering. Untested assumptions, whatever their source, can impair lawyering judgments. In our collective experience, we have found that assumptions rooted in …

Psychometric Re-Evaluation Of The Spiritual Support Scale, Angela M. Bowman Jan 2012

Psychometric Re-Evaluation Of The Spiritual Support Scale, Angela M. Bowman

LSU Master's Theses

Informal caregivers provide a substantial amount of emotional, financial, physical, and social support to their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s caregivers often report immense levels of burden, which are associated with the demands of their caregiving duties. Caregivers mediate this burden through various means of coping, including spiritual support. Individuals who successfully manage the negative stressors related to Alzheimer’s caregiving are often highly resilient. The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spiritual Support Scale among a sample of Alzheimer’s caregivers. The Spiritual Support Scale was initially utilized to measure spiritual coping among a …

Teen Sexuality And Pregnancy In Nevada, Tiffany G. Tyler, Marie A. Wakefield, Sandra D. Owens, Lori Smith

Social Health of Nevada Reports

The proliferation of sexually explicit materials has been the hallmark of North American culture for decades. The arrival of the Internet made access to such materials all the easier, and not only for adults but also for teenagers who learn at ever-early age that romantic relations are exciting and sexual encounters are a welcome part of life. When such exposure to sensual images is not accompanied by appropriate sex education, the consequences could be dire for teenagers and society alike.

Housing Availability And Homelessness In Nevada, Dahn Shaulis, Kathleen Fairchild, Kurt Borchard Jan 2012

Housing Availability And Homelessness In Nevada, Dahn Shaulis, Kathleen Fairchild, Kurt Borchard

Social Health of Nevada Reports

The first edition of Housing Availability and Homelessness in Nevada was written in 2005 amid economic boom times and rapid population growth. At the publication of this revision, in 2011, Nevadans face crisis-level economic conditions profoundly affecting how we evaluate housing conditions in the Silver State. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes and tens of thousands are jobless and without benefits, putting them at greater risk of homelessness (Associated Press, 2011, Silva, 2011, Sermons and Witte, 2011). Housing availability and homelessness are social concerns looming larger than six years ago.

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on perceived productivity. A 24 question survey was given to 100 employees within a financial organization resulting in 46 total useable surveys to analyze. Findings revealed that workplace setting does not significantly affect an employee’s perception of productivity. The result supports the Coordinated Management of Meaning theory of interpersonal communication as presented by Pearce and Cronen (1989) because communication required of an employee to be productive within an organization is learned and constantly …
