Crucial Design Issues For Special Access Technology, Pearl O'Rourke, Ray Ekins, Bernard Timmins, Fiona Timmins, Siobhan Long, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

Introduction: Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT) aims to empower individuals with disabilities by reducing the environmental and societal barriers they encounter. Power wheelchairs aid mobility, communication aids allow for more efficient conversation, environmental controls permit greater autonomy, and personal computers provide access to information, social networking and educational activities. In order to control EAT, a computer input device is necessary. Mice and keyboards are typically used but in certain cases, Special Access Technology (SAT) is required. SAT refers to adapted and alternative computer input devices that are utilised when mainstream software and hardware are not suitable. Examples are switches, joysticks and …

Violent Socialization Processes And Criminal Behavior: An International Perspective On Variations In Social Control During Late Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Aimee Delaney Lutz Jan 2012

Violent Socialization Processes And Criminal Behavior: An International Perspective On Variations In Social Control During Late Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Aimee Delaney Lutz

Doctoral Dissertations

Using Gottfredson and Hirschi's parental socialization thesis as a theoretical framework, the present study explores whether or not violent socialization processes are associated with criminal behavior, both at the micro-level and macro-level, across 32 different nations. Analyses were conducted on data from the International Dating Violence Study (Straus & Members of the International Dating Violence Research Consortium, 2004). Bivariate statistical analyses show that violent socialization tends to be more prevalent among nations with indicators of violence (e.g., laws supporting the death penalty) compared to nations without such indicators. The results of ordinary least squares regression analysis indicate that violent familial …

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Group Curriculum, Julie M. Wood Jan 2012

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Group Curriculum, Julie M. Wood

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The social workers at the MSH are treating many patients who have previous placements in chemical dependency treatment in addition to previous hospitalizations for their mental illness. Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (LADC) are employed at the hospital but not on unit 800 which is the crisis and intake unit. The hospital does not have funds available in their budget to add additional LADC staff at the present time.

Having a treatment group focusing on dual diagnosis would enable the patients to receive education and therapy for their addiction issues much earlier in the course of their treatment at MSH. …

Collaborating With The Real World: Opportunities For Developing Skills And Values In Law Teaching, Charity Scott Jan 2012

Collaborating With The Real World: Opportunities For Developing Skills And Values In Law Teaching, Charity Scott

Faculty Publications By Year

This article describes a broad range of teaching innovations and opportunities that classroom law professors can take advantage of in their own backyards. It presents examples of real-world engagement by faculty who help their students learn the skills, values, and attributes of good professional practice by supplementing what they already are teaching well with opportunities to learn the law in real-world contexts. Classroom professors do not need to become clinical professors or start teaching lawyering skills courses. Instead, they can collaborate with clinical professors, practicing lawyers, and other professionals outside their classrooms in settings that relate to their doctrinal fields. …

More Than One Lane Wide: Against Hierarchies Of Helping In Progressive Legal Advocacy, Rebecca Sharpless Jan 2012

More Than One Lane Wide: Against Hierarchies Of Helping In Progressive Legal Advocacy, Rebecca Sharpless

Articles

Progressive legal scholars and practitioners have created a hierarchy within social justice lawyering. Direct service attorneys-nonprofit attorneys who focus on helping individuals in civil cases-sit at the bottom. In the 1960s, progressive theorists advanced a negative portrayal of direct service attorneys as a class. This discourse has continued through different phases in the development of progressive legal theory. Direct service work is done primarily by women in the service of women, has the aesthetic of traditional women's work, and can be understood as embodying the thesis that women have a greater existential and psychological connection to others than men. Like …

Death—Planning For The Inevitable: A Hybrid Honors Course, Jennifer Gresham, Betty Carlson Bowles, Marty Gibson, Kim Robinson, Mark Farris, Juliana Felts

Honors in Practice Online Archive

One of the National Collegiate Honors Council’s Basic Characteristics of an Honors Program is that “the program serves as a laboratory within which faculty feel welcome to experiment with new subjects, approaches, and pedagogies. When proven successful, such efforts in curriculum and pedagogical development can serve as prototypes for initiatives that can become institutionalized across the campus.” Four faculty members from the departments of nursing and respiratory therapy at Midwestern State University, a public liberal arts university in Wichita Falls, designed and taught a hybrid honors course called Death—Planning for the Inevitable. This course, which combined traditional in-class and online …

The Reflective Professional Honours Programme Of The Dutch Saxion Universities, Trijntje Van Dijk Jan 2012

The Reflective Professional Honours Programme Of The Dutch Saxion Universities, Trijntje Van Dijk

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The Reflective Professional Honours Programme of the Saxion Universities of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands centers on a profile of what graduates of the program should have accomplished in addition to their regular bachelor’s degree program. The development team for our programme first investigated what the profile should be, interviewing roughly three hundred business representatives to discover what they considered an excellent honours student profile. All the interview information was transformed into a concept profile. An Honours Council evaluated the concept, and the project team adapted it. Then the steering committee evaluated and approved it after further adaption. Finally the …

The Matriarch: A Historical Review Of The Life Of Ada Mae Woodson Brown Metcalf, Pamela Gesund Jan 2012

The Matriarch: A Historical Review Of The Life Of Ada Mae Woodson Brown Metcalf, Pamela Gesund

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Through reading Warmth of other suns by Isabel Wilkerson as a class project, I was introduced to the history of the Great Migration, the exodus of African Americans from the oppressive Jim Crow laws in the South. Learning about the personal experiences of individuals who took part in the Great Migration, and their inability to shed racism and oppression in the North and West, led me to a deeper understanding of the many social, economic, and political challenges faced by African American citizens. This understanding prompted in me an interest to learn more about the African American culture, in particular …

Measuring The Impact Of A Residential Learning Community On The Mental Health And Well-Being Of Art Students In Higher Education, Deborah Katherine Martin Jan 2012

Measuring The Impact Of A Residential Learning Community On The Mental Health And Well-Being Of Art Students In Higher Education, Deborah Katherine Martin

Dissertations

College students are experiencing mental health concerns at an alarming rate. Art students are a particularly vulnerable sub-population, as artists appear to be more susceptible to mental illness than the general population. Many students do not seek assistance through conventional methods designed by colleges and universities to address their mental health; therefore, colleges and universities must look for alternate methods of supporting students. This quantitative study explores the impact a residential college program (RCP) with an emphasis on engaged learning has on art student mental health and well-being.

Redefining Sisterhood: The New Nuns, Laywomen And Catholic Feminist Activism, 1953-1992, Alexandra Elizabeth Michaelides Jan 2012

Redefining Sisterhood: The New Nuns, Laywomen And Catholic Feminist Activism, 1953-1992, Alexandra Elizabeth Michaelides

Dissertations

The involvement of American Catholic women in the feminist movement after 1960 is considered an anomaly. Yet, Catholic feminist activism thrived in large American cities like Chicago. This dissertation works to explain the origins, trajectory, methods, and eventual radicalization of the Catholic feminist movement in the United States. I argue that the events of the Second Vatican Council and the Sister Formation Movement (an organized effort to educate American nuns) set the stage for unprecedented reforms, brought an excitement and optimism to women religious and laywomen, and led to unintended revolutionary consequences. Nuns and laywomen were optimistic that the church …
