Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-01-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The Indonesian Massacre Of 1965 And Reconciliation Efforts In Indonesia, Wayan Ariati Jan 2012

The Indonesian Massacre Of 1965 And Reconciliation Efforts In Indonesia, Wayan Ariati

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

Indonesia declared its independence in August 17, 1945 after more than three centuries of colonization by the Dutch, and a short period of Japanese occupation (1942-1945), with Soekarno as the first president and Mohammad Hatta as his vice president. However, as an independent country, Indonesia encountered many problems economically, socially and politically. Under the Soekarno regime known as the Old Order, there were two powers; the Armed Forces (ABRI) and the Communist Party (PKI), both vying for the attention of Soeharto and intent on influencing his economic and political policies. The PKI was the largest communist party outside Russia and …

Ethical And Pedagogical Challenges Of Experiential Learning - In Different Types Of Memorials Of Repression - With Foreign Students In Argentina, Brenda Pereyra, Nuria Pena, Katherine Jensen Jan 2012

Ethical And Pedagogical Challenges Of Experiential Learning - In Different Types Of Memorials Of Repression - With Foreign Students In Argentina, Brenda Pereyra, Nuria Pena, Katherine Jensen

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

From 1976 to 1983, Argentina experienced the worst dictatorship in its history. Roughly 30,000 people were disappeared in the military junta’s clandestine system of terror. Once democracy was reinstalled in 1983 and in particular throughout the last few years, many actions have been undertaken to bring justice and initiate a process of collective memory. The study abroad program “Argentina Social Movements and Human Rights” from SIT has the challenge to teach about this period of the history to foreign students. The different types of memorials are a path by which we can bring students to the understanding of a complex …

Changing Assessment Practices In Pakistani Schools : A Case Of Aku-Eb Middle School Assessment Framework, Amin Rehmani Jan 2012

Changing Assessment Practices In Pakistani Schools : A Case Of Aku-Eb Middle School Assessment Framework, Amin Rehmani

Examination Board

Assessment is inevitably linked with the processes of teaching and learning. Assessment for learning (AFL), the focus of this paper, is germane to students’ learning in that the purpose of AFL is to help students improve their learning in light of the feedback they receive on the quality of their work. Educational research indicats that AFL is a viable alternative to traditional examination system at school level, and in case of high stake public examinations, it helps students perform better at summative examinations, especially when both formative and summative assessments are used in tandem (Assessment Reform Group, various papers; The …

Can Nursing Escape The Medical Model?, Rilda Brostrom Matthews

Biennial Convention (CONV)

ESCAPE-C is an acronym for an Assessment Tool for the first step of the Nursing Process. It is derived from concepts identified by major theorists and is used as a consistent framework for identifying patient needs. It incorporates the standard Nursing Process and is up to date with current Nursing Diagnoses. The needed concepts to be assessed are summarized in the ESCAPE-C acronym. Nurses need to assess needs of the persons or groups in response to their Environment, Self (Psycho, Social, Cultural and Spiritual needs), Comfort, ADL's [further delineated to MEETS: Move-Eat-Eliminate-Toilet-Sleep], Physical assessment and assessment of Educational needs. An Individualized Fall Prevention Program For Older Adults: Partnerships In Practice, Mary Lou De Natale Jan 2012

An Individualized Fall Prevention Program For Older Adults: Partnerships In Practice, Mary Lou De Natale

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Purpose: The aim of this research will be to reduce the risk of patient falls during home visits and scheduled assessements for older adults. One of the major concerns in caring for a older adult living in the community is the increased susceptibility to falls based on the risk factors: history of falls, decreased independence in ADL's, use of assistance devices, osteoarthritis, environmental safety, cognitive impairment, incontinence, vision impairment, hearing, and medications.

Significance: Each year, an estimated one third of older adults fall, and the likelihood of falling increases substantially with advancing age (CDC, 2009). Older adults with mild, moderate, …

Depression Screening As A Service Learning Activity In Community Health Nursing, Robert Gordon Jr. Hanks, Diane Mitschke, Aaron Mitschke Jan 2012

Depression Screening As A Service Learning Activity In Community Health Nursing, Robert Gordon Jr. Hanks, Diane Mitschke, Aaron Mitschke

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Integrating service learning into baccalaureate nursing courses has been viewed as a positive enhancement to the learning process for both nursing student and the service recipient. This particular service learning event involved nursing students screening low income Latino patients for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and a brief demographic survey at a free clinic in a large southwestern metropolitan area. In this IRB approved study, patients were screened before seeing the medical provider by nursing students trained in the use of the PHQ-9 and supervised by nursing faculty. Spanish and English versions of the PHQ-9 were available to …

Using Ethnography To Build Knowledge: Informal Caregivers Providing Care At The End-Of-Life, Gwen Mcghan, Janice Penrod, Brenda L. Baney Jan 2012

Using Ethnography To Build Knowledge: Informal Caregivers Providing Care At The End-Of-Life, Gwen Mcghan, Janice Penrod, Brenda L. Baney

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Research into issues related to end-of-life care has grown exponentially over the past decade, yet the science under-girding practice remains under developed. Several national consensus panels have addressed the development of strategic initiatives to advance the state of the science, confirming the need for research into the experiences of informal caregivers providing end-of-life care and the derivation of theory-driven, research-based interventions to meet their needs. To help address this gap, ethnographic methods were used to understand the influences of the prevailing values and beliefs, or the culture of care, on formal caregivers' recognition and response to informal caregivers' feelings of …

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson Jan 2012

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson

Theses and Dissertations

“Spiritual Economies” asserts that the emancipatory drive in international social care to integrate spirituality and religion in culturally sensitive practice, is much needed given the demographic and social changes engendered by globalization. Ethical codes guiding the practice of international social care, furthermore, have mandated that spiritual and religious beliefs are an important part of cultural diversity. An extensive examination and analysis of the discourse on the integration of religion and spirituality in the predominantly secular social services, however, yielded a number of concerns among international social care scholars and practitioners regarding the inclusion of religion due to the potential for …

Quantitative Literacy Interventions At University Of Cape Town: Effects Of Separation From Academic Disciplines, Vera Frith Jan 2012

Quantitative Literacy Interventions At University Of Cape Town: Effects Of Separation From Academic Disciplines, Vera Frith

Numeracy

The aim of the Numeracy Centre at the University of Cape Town is to develop students’ quantitative literacy (QL) in a manner consistent with their programmes of study and intended roles in the community. Our theoretical perspective on the nature of QL is in line with that of the New Literacies Studies and sees academic QL as practices in different academic disciplinary contexts. This means that for us the ideal curriculum structure for developing QL would fully integrate it into the teaching of the disciplines. This is in practice not achievable in most cases, especially since many students do not …
