Participant Recruitment Of African American College Students At An Historically Black College And University (Hbcu): Challenges And Strategies For Health-Related Research, Cecile N. Yancu, Anna K. Lee, Daphne D. Witherspoon, Correll D. Mcrae

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Lack of research participation among African Americans is problematic for population relevant health disparity research. The purpose of this paper is to identify and describe challenges and strategies in recruitment of African American college students for health related research being conducted at a small Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Upon completion of a recruitment and retention literature review, study investigators constructed and tested a culturally-specific, direct-appeal protocol to recruit participants. Major barriers to recruitment of African American college students included discrete sources of distrust, lack of understanding of the research process, and logistical concerns. Implementation of a culturally-specific, direct …

Valanced Voices: Student Experiences With Learning Disabilities & Differences, Zoe Dupree Fine

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This feminist oral history project located at the intersections of disability, feminist, body politics, and educational theory presents an analysis of three individual student narratives about their experiences with learning disabilities and learning differences (LD/Ds) at the high school and university levels. This thesis introduces students' accounts of their daily lives, pasts, personal views, experiences, and memories about having learning disabilities and learning differences into the existing scholarship on LDs and reveals how students' narrated experiences might shed light on the ways in which education might be reformed to better meet the needs of students like them. In response to …

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson Mar 2012

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Our 30-year record of undergraduate enrollment trends in natural resources shows pronounced cyclical swings over time, well beyond those for enrollments across all disciplines in four-year U.S. institutions of higher learning. Despite large increases in overall student enrollments, current natural resources enrollments are at about the same level as historic highs in the early 1980s and mid 1990s, and are increasingly dominated by broad degrees in natural resources. The reasons for these cycles are many and complex, and appear to be influenced by the political climate, unemployment rates, changing public values towards forests, a perceived lack of jobs and low …

Substance Abuse Treatment Stage And Personal Networks Of Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Elizabeth M. Tracy, Hyunsoo Kim, Suzanne Brown, Meeyoung Oh Min, Min Kyoung Jun, Christopher Mccarty

Social Work Faculty Publications

This study examines the relationship among 4 treatment stages (i.e., engagement, persuasion, active treatment, relapse prevention) and the composition, social support, and structural characteristics of personal networks. The study sample includes 242 women diagnosed with substance dependence who were interviewed within their first month of intensive outpatient treatment. Using EgoNet software, the women reported on their 25 alter personal networks and the characteristics of each alter. With one exception, few differences were found in the network compositions at different stages of substance abuse treatment. The exception was the network composition of women in the active treatment stage, which included more …

Mother Teresa And The Bodhisattva Ideal: A Buddhist View, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Mar 2012

Mother Teresa And The Bodhisattva Ideal: A Buddhist View, Karma Lekshe Tsomo

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The notion of the bodhisattva, the selfless individual who is dedicated to alleviating the sufferings of others, is traditionally articulated within a Mahāyāna Buddhist framework. The question posed here is whether and to what extent this religious ideal can be conceived of, or instantiated by, individuals whose religiosity is framed by a different set of beliefs and values, taking the Roman Catholic Sister of Charity, Mother Teresa, as an example. The broader question of commensurability arises when the criteria for qualifying as a bodhisattva, set within a specifically Mahāyāna context, are superimposed upon a figure who is solidly …

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: Quality Of Life Of Patients In Karachi, Rozina Barolia, Fauziya Ali, Salma Jaffar

School of Nursing & Midwifery

In the Third World, cardiac Patients often suffer not only from the nature of their illnesses, but also the insufficiency of the facilities available. Aims: The aims of the present study are to assess and compare the change in health-related quality of life before and 1 month after CABG and to assess the differences in QOL with respect to …
