The Wal-Martization Of African American Religion: T.D. Jakes And Woman Thou Art Loosed, Paula L. Mcgee
The Wal-Martization Of African American Religion: T.D. Jakes And Woman Thou Art Loosed, Paula L. Mcgee
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is an ideological critique of the New Black Church model of ministry, with T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed (WTAL) as a case study. T.D. Jakes is an African American televangelist who pastors The Potter’s House, a supermegachurch in Dallas, Texas. He is the quintessential example of a New Black Church pastor—a religious entrepreneur with several successful faith brands. WTAL is by far his most successful brand. Unashamed of his capitalist success, with an empire estimated to be worth $100 million dollars, Jakes says that it is occupational discrimination for him not to reap the benefits of …

César Chávez And The Secularization Of An American Prophet Of Social Reform, Chelsee Lynn Cox
César Chávez And The Secularization Of An American Prophet Of Social Reform, Chelsee Lynn Cox
CMC Senior Theses
A largely overlooked chapter of American history is the struggle of Mexican Americans to achieve equal civil rights and humane working conditions. Although much ink has been spilled on the struggle of African-Americans to achieve civil rights and throw off the yoke of racial oppression, little attention is paid to the similar struggle carried out by Mexican Americans and the similarities and differences between them. It has been my desire to shed light on this forgotten story, because it is still relevant in the current political climate, given the explosive growth of Latinos in the United States today (50 million), …
Tibetan Buddhism And The Chinese Communist Party: Moving Forward In The 21st Century, Evan Zwisler
Tibetan Buddhism And The Chinese Communist Party: Moving Forward In The 21st Century, Evan Zwisler
CMC Senior Theses
I examine the state of Tibetan Buddhism that exists in China in the 21st century and what are the best methods to increase religious freedom and political autonomy. I look at what cause China and Tibet to reach this point, and why do the respective nations do what they do. Man people fundamentally misunderstand the reasons why the Chinese Communist Party oppresses Tibetan Buddhism; they aren't concerned with eradicating religion, they want to simply maintain longterm political legitimacy in Tibet.
Anticipating Change: Missions And Paradigm Shifts In Emergence, Sam Law
Anticipating Change: Missions And Paradigm Shifts In Emergence, Sam Law
The Asbury Journal
As our global community is in an unprecedented period of rapid change, missiology, being a study of crossing boundaries, plays a critical pathfinder role in anticipating, participating and mediating the change process, for change itself is a temporal boundary. Failure to do so in the past has left the Church and other groups in a position in which they lag change, and have been marginalized and considered irrelevant. Emergence theory is introduced as a new model, in place of Kuhn's pyramid of causality, to describe how change itself has changed, as networks are now the opinion leaders. As well, Emergence …

The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper
The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper
Faculty Publications
Most images of yetis in Western popular culture and scholarly literature portray them as secular, predatory monsters. These representations overlook important religious dimensions of yetis that are hidden in the current literature, so I take a new look at yetis in Tibetan religions in order to clarify our understanding of these legendary creatures. Following a phenomenological approach that sets aside the issue of the ontological existence of yetis, I examine texts, art, ritual, and folklore in order to propose four yeti personal ideal types: the Buddhist practitioner, the human religious ally, the friendly yeti, and the mountain deity yeti. These …

Can Retail Liminal Space/Places Transcend Gender Segmentation?, Nathalie Collins
Can Retail Liminal Space/Places Transcend Gender Segmentation?, Nathalie Collins
Research outputs 2012
Transcendent Customer Experiences (TCEs) transform a customer’s self-identity and imbues them with quintessence: a sacred feeling toward the brand, product and experience. Although TCEs need not happen in a sacred place, they occur in spaces of non-geographical liminality. The ordinary world seems to falls away, replaced by an authentic connection between actors in a communitas, or community of sacred feeling. In the last thirty years, marketers have been further developing consumer religiosity as a sales strategy. This paper explores questions regarding the affect on gender and gender neutrality in consumer religiosity, especially as it applies to liminal space/places in retail …

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
What values do undergraduates adopt and internalize as a result of their college experiences at a Catholic Jesuit college/university? In an attempt to answer this question, the authors chose 21 exemplary graduates from 2000-2007 at a Catholic, Jesuit college in the northeastern part of the United States and conducted a ten question intensive interview with each of them. After transcribing and coding the interviews, it was discovered that these graduates had a strong grasp of such Jesuit ideals as “men and women for others,” “educating the whole person,” “cura personalis,” and “magis,” but apparently a weaker grasp of the more …

Bishop Stephen Neill, The Imc And The State Of African Theological Education In 1950, Dyron Daughrity
All Faculty Open Access Publications
From April to July of 1950, Bishop Stephen Neill (1900-1984) took a sweeping tour of East and West Africa to assess the state of African theological education. He visited Egypt, Sudan, and the six British territories in tropical Africa: Tanganyika, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Gold Coast (Ghana), and Sierra Leone. Employed by the World Council of Churches at the time, Neill was appointed by the International Missionary Council to spearhead the project. The overall objective was to shed light on what could be done to improve the quality of theological education and the training of ministry in Africa. Neill produced a …

An Exploratory Study On The Relationship Between Creativity, Religion, And Religiosity, Kim-Lien Thi Nguyen
An Exploratory Study On The Relationship Between Creativity, Religion, And Religiosity, Kim-Lien Thi Nguyen
Master's Theses
Religiosity and religion are often said to be negative influences on one's creativity level. Creativity and religiosity have been looked at as a single dimension, which is a simplistic view. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between creativity and religiosity using scales that measure each construct multidimensionally. Religiosity was measured by one's level of inclusion of transcendent reality and symbolic interpretation of religious content. Creativity was evaluated in terms of fluency, originality, elaboration, abstractness, and resistance to premature closure. It was predicted that participants who exhibit high inclusion of transcendence and literal interpretation of religious content …
If Not Here, Then Where?: An Investigation Of Faith In The Public Speaking Classroom, Mary Anne Sunseri
If Not Here, Then Where?: An Investigation Of Faith In The Public Speaking Classroom, Mary Anne Sunseri
Master's Theses
Scholarly research suggests that faith and spirituality are relevant topics of conversation in colleges, but some argue that the separation of church and state inhibits the inclusion of discussions of faith and spirituality in the classrooms of secular education institutions. Such a disconnect might communicate that a person's spirituality and system of values have no place in the academic classroom or in an ethical circumstance. The purpose of this research was to enter into discussion with the instructors of undergraduate public speaking classes to discern whether and how they navigate communication about faith in their classrooms. It is crucial for …
Preaching For Congregational Transformation: A Willardian Vision-Intent-Means Approach To Spiritual Growth And Its Effectiveness In Nurturing The Faith Of The Fullerton Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Melbert B. Baga
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. The preaching diet of the Fullerton congregation has consisted mostly of doctrinal and evangelistic sermons. This is reflective of the kind of preaching one often finds in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This kind of preaching, however, is primarily designed to bring in new believers. It often fails to nurture present members. A different preaching model was needed to address this problem. The present study designed, implemented, and evaluated a preaching module for character transformation utilizing Dallas Willard’s vision-intent-means approach.
Method. Six sermons were preached. A survey instrument was formulated consisting of two parts: (a) Spiritual Assessment Inventory (SAI), which …

Practical Application Of Seventh-Day Adventist Doctrine Through Narrative Preaching At Parkview Adventist Academy, Stephen Reasor
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. Seventh-day Adventist teenagers are familiar with church doctrines but many do not understand how these doctrines relate to a relationship with Jesus Christ and the student’s daily lives. This study was to determine the effectiveness of a narrative sermon series to help academy-aged students understand the centrality of Jesus Christ to Seventh-day Adventist doctrines and how these doctrines relate to daily living.
Method. This study included two researcher developed surveys and group interviews. The surveys gathered qualitative and quantitative data, which measured understanding of, and attitude towards, Seventh-day Adventist doctrines. Forty-four students from Parkview Adventist Academy in Lacombe, Alberta, …
Hope In Environmental Philosophy, Lisa Kretz
Hope In Environmental Philosophy, Lisa Kretz
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Ecological philosophy requires a significant orientation to the role of hope in both theory and practice. I trace the limited presence of hope in ecological philosophy, and outline reasons why environmental hopelessness is a threat. I articulate and problematize recent environmental publications on the topic of hope, the most important worry being that current literature fails to provide the necessary psychological grounding for hopeful action. I turn to the psychology of hope to provide direction for conceptualizing hope and actualizing hoped for states of affairs. If positive moral action is the goal, hope is a vital concept for underwriting ecological …

Hallowed Ground: Literature And The Encounter With God In Post-Reformtion England, C. 1550 - 1704, Michael Thomas Martin
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines the ways in which the encounter with God is figured in post-Reformation English writing between the years 1550 and 1704. The introduction contextualizes the ways in which individuals might encounter God within cultural and historical circumstances of the period: the gradual disappearance of the tradition of spiritual direction that accompanied the suppression of Catholicism in England during the period and the growing influence of more purely "scientific" modes of inquiry, especially after Descartes. Because of these changes, the ways the encounter with God could be experienced were also changing. The introduction also shows how developments in religious …
