The Development Of The Coptic Perceptions Of The Muslim Conquest Of Egypt, Walid Mohamed Asfour Feb 2012

The Development Of The Coptic Perceptions Of The Muslim Conquest Of Egypt, Walid Mohamed Asfour

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines some of the early Coptic perceptions of the Muslim conquest of Egypt that were mentioned in The Chronicle of John of Nikiu, written in the seventh century. It also compares it with the narratives in History of the Patriarchs of the Coptic Church of Alexandria which was collected in the 10th century. This comparison is aiming at recognizing the factors that could be responsible for the development of the Coptic perceptions on the Muslim conquest over three centuries. The study also examines if these sources are the production of a religious institute, such as the Coptic Church, …

Lucretius's Poetic Enlightenment: A Reading Of De Rerum Natura, Xiaofeng Liu Jan 2012

Lucretius's Poetic Enlightenment: A Reading Of De Rerum Natura, Xiaofeng Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Besides being the most important philosophical work during the era of the Republic of Rome, De rerum natura [On the Nature of Things] is also the earliest extant long poem in Latin. While its author Lucretius is not only accredited as the most important philosopher in Latin, he is also known as a major poet in ancient Rome. In De rerum natura, Lucretius illustrates obscure philosophical reasonings in lucid and euphonic poetical lines. Thus, it not only renders the sophiticated atomic materialism in a more approachable way, but also initiates a literary form for enlightenment. Based on a close reading …

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

It has been a challenging week for many friends and family members of Ariane Patterson. The Gardner-Webb religious studies major was celebrating her 21st birthday on Jan. 17 when she collapsed in class, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Her friends say she had an “outrageous love for Christ and people,” and that “her beautiful smile was as infectious as her loving spirit.”

During the 1960s, nearly 80 percent of adult Americans were married. A recent analysis of U.S. census data reported that only 52 percent of adult Americans were married in 2009. That is the lowest percentage reported in the 100 years the Census Bureau has collected such information. The reasons for this dramatic cultural shift are well known: high rates of divorce; changing attitudes toward premarital sex; social acceptability of cohabitation; the weakening of the stigma surrounding out-of-wedlock births and single parenting; the postponement of marriage and children for academic or professional reasons.

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson Jan 2012

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson

Theses and Dissertations

Ethical codes guiding the practice of international social care, furthermore, have mandated that spiritual and religious beliefs are an important part of cultural diversity. An extensive examination and analysis of the discourse on the integration of religion and spirituality in the predominantly secular social services, however, yielded a number of concerns among international social care scholars and practitioners regarding the inclusion of religion due to the potential for …
