Student Social Media Campaign Brings Needtobreathe To Gardner-Webb University, Office Of University Communications, Chelsea Gregory, Travis Sherrill
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
After a seven-month process, a group of Gardner-Webb students will see their hard work pay off on April 28 when Atlantic Records recording artists NEEDTOBREATHE perform in the Paul Porter Arena at 8 p.m. In the fall of 2011, a group of more than 40 students, led by senior Jessica Greer, started a campaign to persuade NEEDTOBREATHE to perform at Gardner-Webb University. The “Operation NEEDTOBREATHE” group, as they were called around campus, used a variety of social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to send messages directly to the band.

The Sacred State: Religion, Politics And The Jerusalem Temple, Rebecca M. King
The Sacred State: Religion, Politics And The Jerusalem Temple, Rebecca M. King
Scripps Senior Theses
I will begin at the beginning, the original construction of the Temple by Solomon and will examine the political nature the Temple achieved even before the first stone was placed. From there the Temple goes through a phase of destruction, rebuilding and destruction again. Each of these phases has political undertones that are important to understand in light of the religious ones. Jewish identity comes into question and the Temple becomes a tool by which to gain legitimacy in the political realm. However, once the Temple is destroyed a second time Jews have to accommodate themselves to a reality in …
Can't Be Tamed: A Feminist Analysis Of Apocrypha And Other Scripture, Catherine Alison Ballard
Can't Be Tamed: A Feminist Analysis Of Apocrypha And Other Scripture, Catherine Alison Ballard
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper is my own unique feminist analysis of certain apocryphal texts. Though the texts I use have common themes, they are divided into what I consider the three most societally important aspects of an ancient woman’s identity: virgin, mother, and whore. The Acts of Thecla and The Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena deal with virginity. II Maccabees, The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas, and select chapters of Augustine’s Confessions represent motherhood. Finally, the hagiographies Life of Pelagia and Life of Mary navigate through the mire of sexualities that deviate from norms.

Ten Gardner-Webb Students, And One Puppy, Present Research At Alpha Chi Conference In Baltimore, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Ten students, one faculty advisor, and a certain canine companion represented Gardner-Webb University at the recent super-regional convention of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society. Each student presented original research, and two were named either a winner or an alternate for prestigious national scholarships. The puppy, a leader dog in training named Tucker, enjoyed the singular distinction of being the conference’s only canine participant.

The Striving Of A Poet-Preacher: Literary And Spiritual Tension In The Holy Sonnets Of John Donne, Abigail Nusbaum
The Striving Of A Poet-Preacher: Literary And Spiritual Tension In The Holy Sonnets Of John Donne, Abigail Nusbaum
Senior Honors Theses
During the Elizabethan era, England experienced religious turmoil that ripped apart its people and saw repercussions in every area of its society. John Donne lived, wrote, and preached during this tumultuous period, and his writing directly reflects the tension of the times. More so than historical commentary however, his poetry, and his Holy Sonnets in particular, bears witness to the far greater battle waging itself within Donne. Within a study of Donne’s life, both professional and personal, and a parallel study of his works in light of the context of his life, a sense of overwhelming tension becomes apparent. The …

The Social, Economic, And Political Connotations Of The Tomb Of Huy (Theban Tomb 40) For Foreign Relations With Ancient Nubia In The 18th Dynasty, Grace Marie Lahneman
The Social, Economic, And Political Connotations Of The Tomb Of Huy (Theban Tomb 40) For Foreign Relations With Ancient Nubia In The 18th Dynasty, Grace Marie Lahneman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis examines the tomb of Huy, the viceroy of Nubia under the reign of the 18th Dynasty king, Tutankhamen (ca. 1333-1323 BCE). An analysis of the tomb narrative in the tomb of Huy at Thebes reveals, and highlights, how the viceroy Huy perceived the world as an elite Egyptian. Two scenes in particular are analyzed with scrutiny: the Nubian tribute scene on the west wall and the viceregal state vessel scene on the east wall. A comparison of the iconographic significance of these two scenes with the archaeological evidence from the Egyptian Nubian frontier area reveals how his tomb …

Browning Symposia & Lectures
The Montana Law Review was honored to have General William K. Suter deliver the 2012 Honorable James R. Browning Distinguished Lecture in Law on April 12, 2012. As Clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States, General Suter’s lecture furthered that tradition. As its namesake indicates, the Browning Lecture honors the Honorable James R. Browning, formerly of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Judge Browning, who passed away in …

The Sociology Of Harriet Martineau In Eastern Life, Present And Past: The Foundations Of The Islamic Sociology Of Religion, Deborah A. Ruigh
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This paper is a critical analysis of Harriet Martineau’s philosophical stance and epistemological modes, her systematic sociological methodology, her use of this methodology, and her sociology of religion. How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838), Eastern Life, Present and Past (1848), and other relevant works will be used to examine Martineau’s evolving epistemological modes as well as her sociology of religion. How to Observe, Martineau’s treatise on systematic sociological methodology and cultural relativism, will serve as an exemplar for analysis of Martineau’s methodological practice as evidenced in Eastern Life. The research problem herein is three-fold: (1) to examine …

Migration, A Sign Of The Times: A Framework For A Pastoral Care Response, Alan J. Hilliard
Conference Papers
Migration, a Sign of the Times – A Framework for a Pastoral Care Response.
Migration is a sign of the times we live in It has been described as ‘the orphan of the global institutional architecture’[1]. However the letter introducing the document Erga Migrantes Caritas Christi signed by the Prefect of the Congregation asserts that migration as well as being a ‘sign of the times’ is also a ‘sign of the presence of God in history and in the community of peoples’. This paper identifies many of the issues that emerge in the pastoral care of migrants from …
