The Globalization Of Latter-Day Saint Education, Casey Paul Griffiths Jul 2012

The Globalization Of Latter-Day Saint Education, Casey Paul Griffiths

Theses and Dissertations

This work traces the development of the global educational system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After a long period of providing schools for its membership in the Intermountain West of the United States, the Latter-day Saints ultimately settled on a system of supplementary religious education, designed to work in concert with public education systems. During the 1950s as the Church began to gain an international following, Church leaders moved to establish an international system of schools to meet their needs. These schools were largely supervised and directed by Americans personnel. Under the leadership of Church president …

Latter-Day Saint Young Adults, Narcissism, And Religiosity, Jacob D. Judd Jul 2012

Latter-Day Saint Young Adults, Narcissism, And Religiosity, Jacob D. Judd

Theses and Dissertations

According to recent research, Latter-day Saint young people are achieving desirable social outcomes at a higher rate than their peers of other backgrounds. As reasons for those findings have been offered, only social aspects of the LDS faith and culture have been given any attention. This thesis will provide an alternate interpretation of the data and provide new data through the administration of the Religious Orientation Scale (ROS) and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). Results from the LDS ROS/NPI Study indicate that LDS young adults continue to score overly intrinsic on the ROS and score significantly lower on the NPI …

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

“Soul journeys” are a central practice of shamanism. However, they have also been important

in many other religious traditions and have exerted a major impact on religions, cultures, and

history. This article surveys some important journeys in the world’s religions such as those of

Mohammed, the Christian saints Paul and John, Jewish Chariot Mysticism, Taoism’s Highest

Clarity tradition, and shamanism. The article explores the experiences of these journeys, techniques

for inducing them, culturally specific features, and the range of metaphysical interpretations of

them. It also examines some of the surprising ways in which journeys are currently impacting

Western culture, ranging …

Common Themes In The Mission And Identity Of The University Of Dayton: A Report Of The Mission And Identity Task Force, University Of Dayton

Documents of the Office for Mission and Rector

This document summarizes more than two years of conversations by faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the Board of Trustees to articulate common themes in the Catholic and Marianist mission and identity of the University of Dayton. These conversations were guided and periodically summarized by the Mission and Identity Task Force.

The Task Force began by reviewing multiple documents on mission and identity produced by the University community over the past 40 years and, through that review, developed a preliminary framework of contemporary issues facing the University and themes of UD’s mission and identity. This framework served as a starting point …

In Search Of The Healthy Church: A Meta-Ethnographic Study, Russell L. Huizing Jul 2012

In Search Of The Healthy Church: A Meta-Ethnographic Study, Russell L. Huizing

Great Commission Research Journal

After a brief literature review, eight of the primary contemporary church health resources are subjected to a meta-ethnographic study. The resources’ combined twenty-six health indicators are translated through the meta-themes of organizational structure, developing community, church characteristics, and personal characteristics. A discussion and visual synthesis of the translations point to the church literature developing community through organizational structure which in turn cultivates church and personal characteristics. Future research recommendations include expanding the study of church metaphors beyond “body” and identifying metaphor-specific characteristics through exegetical study

Summer 2012: Beautiful To Behold, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2007-2012

An understanding of loveliness

St. Augustine saw beauty as a life-saving force in our lives, “a plank amid the waves of the sea.” It is his rule – the Rule of Augustine – that St. Norbert adopted for his order, so it seems especially fitting to reflect upon his words as we explore, in this issue, the nature of the beautiful.

On the cover: Faithful stewardship is a cornerstone of Norbertine practice and it’s a responsibility that the college community has taken very much to its communal heart. One of the many blessings that we reap is our collective ownership …
