Patron‐Driven E‐Book Solutions: Moving Beyond The Banana Books Incident, Gabrielle Wiersma, Yem Fong Sep 2012

Patron‐Driven E‐Book Solutions: Moving Beyond The Banana Books Incident, Gabrielle Wiersma, Yem Fong

Charleston Library Conference

The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries participated in one of the first patron‐driven acquisition initiatives offered by netLibrary in the late 1990s. One outcome of this patron‐driven pilot was the banana books incident which has now become part of popular collection development lore. This incident will be described more fully and will highlight the difficulties of establishing demand‐driven models that are divorced from an institution’s approval plans. More recently, the University of Colorado has taken the lessons learned from the banana books snafu and has developed institution specific solutions for patron selection and use of e‐books. This paper will discuss …

A First-Year Librarian’S Weeding Project Management Experience From Start To (Planned) Finish, Kady Ferris Sep 2012

A First-Year Librarian’S Weeding Project Management Experience From Start To (Planned) Finish, Kady Ferris

Charleston Library Conference

This paper will provide an adaptable roadmap for weeding a monograph collection at a small academic library. When starting straight out of library school as the first Collection Development Librarian for the St. Edward’s University library in July 2010, I was confronted with a monograph collection that had never been weeded in any systematic way. As a small liberal arts university library, it is not our mission to collect comprehensively but rather to support the current curriculum, which is focused on social issues in a global context. Yet, there we were with a dusty, dated, unused collection filling the shelves. …

Perceptions Of Catholic Identity: Views Of Catholic School Administrators And Teachers, John J. Convey Sep 2012

Perceptions Of Catholic Identity: Views Of Catholic School Administrators And Teachers, John J. Convey

Journal of Catholic Education

This article presents the results of a survey conducted in 2010 of over 3,300 administrators and teachers in Catholic elementary and secondary schools nationally about their understanding of the meaning of the term “Catholic identity.” The survey was conducted in the fall of 2010 in anticipation of a national conference on the Catholic identity of Catholic elementary and secondary schools at The Catholic University of America, October 2-4, 2011. The vast majority of respondents viewed the school’s culture or faith community as the most important component of its Catholic identity. The longer the teacher or administrator worked in Catholic schools, …

Foundational Issues In Educating Young People For Understanding And Appreciation Of The Religions In Their Communities, Kathleen Engebretson Sep 2012

Foundational Issues In Educating Young People For Understanding And Appreciation Of The Religions In Their Communities, Kathleen Engebretson

Journal of Catholic Education

This is a conceptual paper considering some of the foundational issues that a teacher needs to have at least considered (if not resolved) when he or she sets out to encourage students to understand and appreciate the variety of religions in their communities. The first issue is that of what to call the enterprise; the second relates to assumed hierarchies of religions and the barriers these can impose on genuine education about religions; the third issue is that of the fundamentalist student; the fourth issue is the pervasive presence of religious history especially when religion has been the oppressor; the …
