Status Configurations, Military Service And Higher Education, Lin Wang, Glen H. Elder, Naomi J. Spence
Publications and Research
The U.S. Armed Forces offer educational and training benefits as incentives for service. This study investigates the influence of status configurations on military enlistment and their link to greater educational opportunity. Three statuses (socioeconomic status of origin, cognitive ability and academic performance) have particular relevance for life course options. We hypothesize that young men with inconsistent statuses are more likely to enlist than men with consistent status profiles, and that military service improves access to college for certain configurations. Analyses of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) show (1. that several status configurations markedly increased the likelihood …

Data Comm—a text-based controller-pilot communication system—is critical to many NextGen improvements. With Data Comm, communication becomes a visual task. Interacting with a visual Data Comm display may yield an unsafe increase in head-down time, particularly for single-pilot operations. This study examined the feasibility of supplementing Data Comm with synthetic speech. To this end, thirty-two pilots flew two experimental scenarios in a Cessna 172 Flight Training Device. In one scenario, ATC communication was with a text-only Data Comm display, in the other, communication was with a text Data Comm display with synthetic speech that read aloud each message (i.e., text+speech). Pilots …

Analisis Kualitas Audit Terhadap Manajemen Laba Akuntansi: Studi Pendekatan Composite Measure Versus Conventional Measure, Antonius Herusetya
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
This study investigates the effect of audit quality on earnings management behavior using a variety of audit quality proxies, either using a single proxy or a joint test of some proxies of audit quality. The study proposed a new composite measure of audit quality called the Audit Quality Metric Score (AQMS), which represents the dimension of competence and independence of audit quality. The study compared the validity of the conventional and the multidimensional measurement of audit quality. With a sample of 1,152 firm-years panel data of non-financial companies listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the year 1999-2007, the …

This study examines the value relevance of fair value and whether the value relevance of fair value measured at quoted active market is higher than value measured at valuation techniques. We also examine whether the value relevance offair value with valuation techniques improves if auditor tenure is longer or financial statements are audited by a Big Four Firm. Hypothesis testing was conducted by a panel data based on model of Ohlson (1995). Using a sample of 147 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2008-2011, resulting the general conclusion that fair value has value relevance, where the value relevance …

This study aims to examine the determinants of compliance of Indonesian tax payers i.e. tax audit, fine and ethical variables. This study proposes a hypothesis that tax compliance is not only affected by deterrence factors such as tax audit and tax fine but also affected by the behavioral aspect of tax payers i.e. their ethics. The effects of tax audit and tax fine on tax compliance depend on ethical standard. This study designs experiment of 2x2 between subjects to examine the hypotheses. The participants of this experimental study are 40 tax payers in Semarang City. The results of this study …

Intangible asset proxied by Intellectual Capital has important role to drive companies values creation. Although many companies have applied corporate governance mechanism in order to have IC disclosure recognition, most of them do not focus on Intellectual Capital disclosure yet. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of corporate governance mechanisms consisting of size of the board commissioners, the independence level of independent commissioner, the activities of independent commissioners, and audit committee on the intellectual capital disclosures of the companies listed in BEI in 2009 using intensive ICs category with the adding of kontrol variables. Dynamic force generation in cardiac muscle, which determines cardiac pumping activity, depends on both the number of sarcomeric cross-bridges and on their cycling kinetics. The Frank–Starling mechanism dictates that cardiac force development increases with increasing cardiac muscle length (corresponding to increased ventricular volume). It is, however, unclear to what extent this increase in cardiac muscle length affects the rate of cross-bridge cycling. Previous studies using permeabilized cardiac preparations, sub-physiological temperatures, or both have obtained conflicting results. Here, we developed a protocol that allowed us to reliably and reproducibly measure the rate of tension redevelopment (ktr; which depends …

Post-translational modification of bacterial elongation factor P (EF-P) with (R)-β-lysine at a conserved lysine residue activates the protein in vivo and increases puromycin reactivity of the ribosome in vitro. The additional hydroxylation of EF-P at the same lysine residue by the YfcM protein has also recently been described. The roles of modified and unmodified EF-P during different steps in translation, and how this correlates to its physiological role in the cell, have recently been linked to the synthesis of polyproline stretches in proteins. Polysome analysis indicated that EF-P functions in translation elongation, rather than initiation as proposed previously. This was …

Determining Quorum Of Attendance And Decision Making In The General Meeting Of Shareholders Based On Court Stipulation Due To The Neglectful Absence Of The Majority Foreign Shareholder In A Joint Venture Company (A Foreign Capital Investment Analysis, Ari Wahyudi Hertanto
Indonesia Law Review
The General Meeting of Shareholders (GMS) is one of the company’s organs with the significant role of determining the business course and other issues related to corporate actions; as it is granted by law to the shareholders of the company. Any decision can be made in the GMS; such as determining the shareholders’ unanimous concurrence on the proposed meeting agenda or even if the results of the meeting are actually contrary to such agenda caused by dissenting among themselves. However, the GMS can also pose certain obstacles in situations where one or more shareholders (that appear to be a majority …

One Roof Judicial System In Indonesia, Sufiarina Sufiarina, Efa Laela Fakhriah
Indonesia Law Review
Judicial power as an independent and autonomous power must be free from any intervention and power, thus ensuring that judges possess independence and impartiality in handling cases. One of the measures for enhancing the independence and autonomy of the judiciary is by placing it under the one roof judicial arrangement developed by the Supreme Court, both from the judicial as well as the non-judicial technical aspects. Up to the present time, endeavors for bringing the four court jurisdictions under the one roof judicial arrangement developed by the Supreme Court have not been completely materialized, due to the existing dualism in …
The Manpower Aspect In The Field Of Sports, Melania Kiswandari
The Manpower Aspect In The Field Of Sports, Melania Kiswandari
Indonesia Law Review
As a result of enhanced professionalism and commercialization in the field of sports, it has become an industry of its own. Professionalism and industrialization are correlated; therefore sports actors’ performance achieved as a result of their professionalism lead to the commercialization, and even to the industrialization of certain (branches of) sports. On the other hand, it is considered that industrialization which involves the commercial aspect is able to maintain, and even enhance sports actors’ professionalism/performance. In practice, such correlation is not always directly proportional, but inversely proportional. There have been cases of issues related to sports actors’ welfare not being …

The Rights Of Private Economic Actors Under The World Trade Organization Agreements In Indonesia, Intan Soeparna
Indonesia Law Review
Nothing in the Uruguay Round mentions directly about rights of private economic actors. It seems that the relationship to private economic actors (or may be individual) does not exist within the WTO Agreements, because as a general rule, private parties are not legal subjects of the international legal order. However, this article will prevail upon this situation, by looking closer at the essence of the WTO Agreements to discern the rights of private economic actors that derive from the WTO. The main question of this article is to what extent then Indonesia is dealing with the rights of private economic …

Electricity Generation And Consumption In Iran And The Role Of Nuclear Power For Sustainable Energy / Afshin Mazandarany, Mazandarany Afshin
Student Works (2010-2019)
Over the years, the consumption of all types of energy, such as electricity, have increased rapidly in Iran. The economic growth of the country depends on electricity, and, therefore, the trend of electricity consumption is likely to keep growing in the future to sustain this growth. In view of this need, the government plans to build many new power plants and decided to redevelop its nuclear program to meet the rising electricity demand and decrease the consumption of fossil fuels. In this study, the effect of this policy on four major aspects of energy sustainability, including environmental pollution, electricity demand, …
Drone Federalism: Civilian Drones And The Things They Carry, Margot E. Kaminski
Drone Federalism: Civilian Drones And The Things They Carry, Margot E. Kaminski
Publications
Civilian drones are scheduled to be permitted in the national airspace as early as 2015. Many think Congress should establish the necessary nationwide regulations to govern both law enforcement and civilian drone use. That thinking, however, is wrong. This Essay suggests drone federalism instead: a state-based approach to privacy regulation that governs drone use by civilians, drawing on states’ experience regulating other forms of civilian-on-civilian surveillance. This approach will allow necessary experimentation in how to best balance privacy concerns against First Amendment rights in the imminent era of drone-use democratization. This Essay closes by providing some guidance to states as …
