Participatory Budgeting: Core Principles And Key Impacts, Brian Wampler
Participatory Budgeting: Core Principles And Key Impacts, Brian Wampler
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay is a reflection piece. I identify key principles at the core of how PB functions and to discuss the scope of change we might expect to see generated by these institutions. I move beyond the idea that there is a specific model or set of “best practices” that define PB. Rather, it is most fruitful to conceptualize PB as a set of principles that can generate social change. The weaker the adherence to these principles, the less social change generated. The second purpose of the essay is to reflect on the impacts generated by PB. How do these …
Filtering Efficiency And Feeding Mechanisms Of Daphnia Pulex On Microcystis Aeruginosa And Nannochloropsis, Elizabeth Orlowicz
Filtering Efficiency And Feeding Mechanisms Of Daphnia Pulex On Microcystis Aeruginosa And Nannochloropsis, Elizabeth Orlowicz
Honors Theses and Capstones
The filtering and feeding rate of Daphnia pulex from the Old Durham Reservoir, Durham, NH, were measured to determine the feeding efficiency on different concentrations of non-toxic Nannochloropsis (Class Eustigmatophyceae) and toxigenic cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa. Direct observations of thoracic appendage beats and post-abdominal rejections were also measured at 5*105 and 106 cells mL-1 concentrations of Nannochloropsis and M. aeruginosa to examine the feeding mechanisms of the D. pulex. In the presence of increasing Nannochloropsis concentrations, the filtering rates decreased and the feeding rates increased. When exposed to M. aeruginosa, both the filtering and feeding …
Benevolent Government Now, Howard J. Curzer
Benevolent Government Now, Howard J. Curzer
Comparative Philosophy
Mencian benevolent government intervenes dramatically in many ways in the marketplace in order to secure the material well-being of the population, especially the poor and disadvantaged. Mencius considers this sort of intervention to be appropriate not just occasionally when dealing with natural disasters, but regularly. Furthermore, Mencius recommends shifting from regressive to progressive taxes. He favors reduction of inequality so as to reduce corruption of government by the wealthy, and opposes punishment for people driven to crime by destitution. Mencius thinks government should try to improve the character of the population by preventing or relieving poverty, by setting a good …

The Contributions Of Teaching By Approaching Competencies On The Skill Of Self-Confidence Among Secondary School Students, Zamali Mohamed
The Contributions Of Teaching By Approaching Competencies On The Skill Of Self-Confidence Among Secondary School Students, Zamali Mohamed
Modern Sport
Self-confidence is considered one of the important psychological skills that often affect the performance and level of students, especially during their physical activities in physical education and sports classes. Although there are various factors and sources for developing this psychological skill, many researchers link it to the contributions of the teaching style used in educational curricula, which relies on the pedagogical approach of competencies, also known as competency-based teaching. This is done by emphasizing the achievement of goals and reaching competencies that may lead to either an increase or decrease in self-confidence. Main Objective of the Study: To identify the …

How Is This Paper Philosophy?, Kristie Dotson
How Is This Paper Philosophy?, Kristie Dotson
Comparative Philosophy
This paper answers a call made by Anita Allen to genuinely assess whether the field of philosophy has the capacity to sustain the work of diverse peoples. By identifying a pervasive culture of justification within professional philosophy, I gesture to the ways professional philosophy is not an attractive working environment for many diverse practitioners. As a result of the downsides of the culture of justification that pervades professional philosophy, I advocate that the discipline of professional philosophy be cast according to a culture of praxis. Finally, I provide a comparative exercise using Graham Priests definition of philosophy and Audre Lordes …
Online Nonintrusive Condition Monitoring And Fault Detection For Wind Turbines, Xiang Gong
Online Nonintrusive Condition Monitoring And Fault Detection For Wind Turbines, Xiang Gong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The goal of this dissertation research is to develop online nonintrusive condition monitoring and fault detection methods for wind turbine generators (WTGs). The proposed methods use only the current measurements that have already been used by the control and protection systems of WTGs; no additional sensors or data acquisition devices are needed. Current-based condition monitoring and fault detection techniques have great economic benefits and the potential to be adopted by the wind energy industry. However, there are challenges in using current measurements for wind turbine condition monitoring and fault detection. First, it is a challenge to extract WTG fault signatures …
Exploring Cybercultures: Critical And Constructivist Studies On The Internet, Rhoderick Nuncio
Exploring Cybercultures: Critical And Constructivist Studies On The Internet, Rhoderick Nuncio
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The essay lays the sociological grounds in understanding the phenomenon of cyberculture in the age of information and communication technology. The frame of the paper is limited to constructivist and critical studies found in books and other journals. This essay particularly examines the debate on defining Internet culture and the many possible worlds and spaces it occupy in the lives of Internet users. It describes the beginning of research on the Internet and thus explains the dearth of materials in other paradigms. The paper recommends exploring other domains of interrogating the Internet as it evolves and matures through the years.
Active Ageing Of Elderly People And Its Determinant: Empirical Evidence From Thailand, Supachet Chansarn
Active Ageing Of Elderly People And Its Determinant: Empirical Evidence From Thailand, Supachet Chansarn
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study aims to assess the active ageing of elderly people aged 60 to 95 years old in Thailand and to investigate its determinants based on the data obtained from the National Statistical Office’s elderly survey in 2007. The findings revealed that elderly people in Thailand had moderate active ageing. In terms of each dimension, this found that elderly people had high active ageing under the health dimension, moderate active ageing under the security dimension, and low active ageing under the participation dimension. Additionally, the regression analysis indicated that age and living in urban areas had negative impacts on the …
Leadership Contestations, Succession, And Stability In Malaysia And Indonesia, Yang Razali Kassim
Leadership Contestations, Succession, And Stability In Malaysia And Indonesia, Yang Razali Kassim
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
While Southeast Asia is generally stable, political leadership in two regional states is going through a period of uncertainty. The leaderships in Malaysia and Indonesia are undergoing some stress as they face the challenges of transition. Najib Razak, who was appointed Prime Minister of Malaysia in 2009, is due to call a general election to win his first mandate from the people. Najib’s return to office is likely, though this is not a certainty, as Malaysian politics have become more unpredictable. Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is to step down in 2014 at the end of his second and mandatory …
Democracy, Decentralization And Higher Education: The Philippine Case, Roger Chao Jr.
Democracy, Decentralization And Higher Education: The Philippine Case, Roger Chao Jr.
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Philippine democratization and its decentralization initiatives are studied to understand how it has empowered the local government, and if decentralization played a role in the demise of Philippine higher education, one of the most admired Southeast Asian higher education systems in the 1960s and 1970s. A documentary review of key decentralization policy documents, namely, the 1973 and 1987 Philippine Constitution and the 1991 Local Government Code, together with a review of key Philippine higher education reforms, is conducted. The study explains that there is a transfer of fiscal, administrative, and political power to local governments. Philippine decentralization initiatives, however, have …
The Ethnopolitics Of Moro Self-Determination In The Philippines: So Little, Too Late?, Rizal G. Buendia
The Ethnopolitics Of Moro Self-Determination In The Philippines: So Little, Too Late?, Rizal G. Buendia
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper re-examines the Moro secessionist movement in the Philippines from the perspective of ethno-politics. Using a hybrid framework, which combines Paul Brass’ and Abner Cohen’s instrumentalist approach to ethnicity on the one hand and Michael Hechter’s and Michael Banton’s rational choice theory on the other hand, the paper argues that the complexity of the current separatist war is not simply due to the weakness of the state but also due to the weakness of the Bangsamoro identity and notion of nationhood. This frailty allows the state to co-opt leaders of the movement and sabotage their legitimate quest for self-governance …
Socio-Economic Impacts, Social Inclusion, And Science-Policy Interphase: The Case Of Rice Biotechnology In The Philippines, Antonio P. Contreras
Socio-Economic Impacts, Social Inclusion, And Science-Policy Interphase: The Case Of Rice Biotechnology In The Philippines, Antonio P. Contreras
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper argues that the development of biotechnology policies in the Philippines vis-à-vis rice is enabled by structures and processes that are friendly to the furtherance of social inclusion and equity goals. This occurs in the context of attaining rice self-sufficiency amidst a globalized system and is clearly expressed in the relative density of concepts and provisions related to participation, inclusivity, and transparency in all the relevant policy instruments. However, spaces that are opened are vulnerable to a political system that has deep-seated structural flaws and a science community whose financial support from the state is limited and at the …
Bangladesh And The Role Of Private Sector: Addressing Digital Divides, Maria Divina Gracia Z. Roldan, Beathe Due
Bangladesh And The Role Of Private Sector: Addressing Digital Divides, Maria Divina Gracia Z. Roldan, Beathe Due
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Access to information and communication technologies (ICT) is seen as a key tool to provide economic growth both in developed and developing countries. Despite public and private ICT initiatives to increase ICT access and usage at a grassroots level, there is still a large digital divide (Norris 2003, Mazzarella 2010). Marginalized sectors in Asia, such as the rural folk, women, and low-income youth, remain unreached by the benefits which ICT is supposed to offer. In this paper, three approaches in Bangladesh to decrease the digital divide are analyzed: Grameenphone’s establishment of Community Information Centers (CICs), Grameenphone’s Village Phone program, and …

China’S One-Child Policy And Implementation, Xiaofei Li
China’S One-Child Policy And Implementation, Xiaofei Li
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Though China had been plagued by famines since ancient times, it was not until the Great Chinese Famine in the late 1950s and early 1960s that the state became proactive against future famines. In 1979, under the conviction that overpopulation was threatening China’s existence, Deng Xiaoping implemented the “one-child policy,” a coercive population control (CPC) measure intended to reduce the country’s fertility rate. However, because of the harsh nature of CPC, the disparate gender ratio that has developed, the imminent aging of China’s population, and a number of other critical enforcement concerns, CPC has proven to be far from an …

Marriage Immigration And Gender In South Korea: Accounting For Gender Disparities In International Marriages, Junmo Kim, Seung-Bum Yang, Ador Revelar Torneo
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Recent studies on immigration in East Asia are focusing on female marriage immigration, the migration of large numbers of women from developing countries to marry men from industrialized countries like South Korea. Typically lost in the discourse however, are international marriages involving foreign grooms, once the more dominant trend in South Korea before the mid-1990s. This article explains how trends in international marriages in South Korea reversed in the mid- 1990s and how marriages involving the two genders differ in their drivers and characteristics. Both phenomena are examined in the context of neo-classical economics and push-pull theories of migration, hypergamy, …
Perceived Discrimination In Ancestral Homeland: Filipino Nikkeijins And The Dynamics Of Migrant Resistance, Ron Bridget Vilog
Perceived Discrimination In Ancestral Homeland: Filipino Nikkeijins And The Dynamics Of Migrant Resistance, Ron Bridget Vilog
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The Immigration Control Act of 1990 formally allowed the nikkeijins or descendants of Japanese nationals who were born in foreign countries to enter Japan and work without restriction. Following the rapid migration of Latin American nikkeis, thousands of Filipino nikkeijins had taken advantage of their “ethnic right” by working in Japanese factories. In spite of the privileges bestowed upon them, issues about discrimination, prejudice, and even exploitation had been reported in various fora. This paper examines the reconfiguration of ethnic self-identification as Filipino nikkeijins face social discrimination in Japan. The narratives of second and third generation Filipino nikkeijins reveal that …
State Behavior And Regional Identity: The Case Of China And East Asia, Alex Littlefield
State Behavior And Regional Identity: The Case Of China And East Asia, Alex Littlefield
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The research on East Asian multilateralism argues favorably or unfavorably over the effectiveness and durability of regional cooperation towards strengthening state-to-state relations. Those who locate cooperation (e.g. economic or security) and shared norms among Asian neighbors typically apply a liberal institutionalist or a social constructivist approach. Those who doubt the depth and authenticity of corporate spirit and goodwill towards regionalization speak in terms of traditional power politics and strategic balancing. This paper critically examines Asian regionalism using the language of social constructivism and not political realism. Ideas, identities, perceptions, and behavior are prioritized and material forces are of less concern …

Open Archives Initiative Protocol For Metadata Harvesting, Dublin Core And Accessibility In The Oaister Repository, Michael Peake
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper examines the use of Dublin Core as a minimum metadata standard for Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting in terms of its impact on end user experience in the OAIster repository. Specifically the study looked at the use of controlled vocabulary searches versus non-controlled vocabulary searches, as well as the impact of Dublin Core on the granularity and consistency records. Searches were performed in OAIster using Library of Congress Subject Headings and Name Authority Files, as well as non-controlled vocabulary searches for the same terms. The study concluded that controlled vocabulary searches are good for retrieving relevant …
Colonial Figures: Memories Of Street Traders In The Colonial And Early Post-Colonial Periods, Sheri Lynn Gibbings, Fridus Steijlen
Colonial Figures: Memories Of Street Traders In The Colonial And Early Post-Colonial Periods, Sheri Lynn Gibbings, Fridus Steijlen
Global Studies Faculty Publications
This article explores post-colonial memories about street traders among individuals who lived in the former colony of the Dutch East Indies. It argues that these narratives romanticize the relationship between Europeans and indigenous peoples. Street vendors are also used to differentiate between periods within colonial and post-colonial history. The nostalgic representation of interracial contact between Europeans and traders is contrasted with representations of other figures such as the Japanese and the nationalist. A recurring feature of these representations is the ability of Europeans to speak with street traders and imagine what they wanted and needed. The traders are remembered as …

Functional α7β2 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Expressed In Hippocampal Interneurons Exhibit High Sensitivity To Pathological Level Of Amyloid β Peptides, Qiang Liu, Yao Huang, Jianxin Shen, Scott Steffensen, Jie Wu
Translational Neuroscience
Background: β-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation is described as a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Aβ perturbs a number of synaptic components including nicotinic acetylcholine receptors containing α7 subunits (α7-nAChRs), which are abundantly expressed in the hippocampus and found on GABAergic interneurons. We have previously demonstrated the existence of a novel, heteromeric α7β2-nAChR in basal forebrain cholinergic neurons that exhibits high sensitivity to acute Aβ exposure. To extend our previous work, we evaluated the expression and pharmacology of α7β2-nAChRs in hippocampal interneurons and their sensitivity to Aβ.Results: GABAergic interneurons in the CA1 subregion of the hippocampus expressed functional α7β2-nAChRs, which were characterized …
