Misunderstood: The Matthew Shepherd Hate Crime And Its Intercultural Implications, Cameron Muir
Misunderstood: The Matthew Shepherd Hate Crime And Its Intercultural Implications, Cameron Muir
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
The increasing vocalization by both supporters and opponents of homosexual rights has launched the topic into the spotlight, reenergizing a vibrant discussion that personally affects millions of Americans and which will determine the direction in which U.S. national policy will develop. This essay serves as a continuation of this discussion, using the Matthew Shepherd Hate crime, which occurred in October of 1998, as a focal point around which a detailed analysis of homophobia and masculinity in American culture will emerge.

Mcdaniel Slough Wetland Restoration Staff Recommendation, Coastal Conservancy
Project Documents
The McDaniel Slough Wetland Restoration Project restored tidal flow and fish passage to 280 acres of former salt marsh wetlands and enhanced associated wildlife habitat. The project removed barriers to anadromous fish, restored tidal influence, deepened historic slough channels, partially removed failing or obsolete levees, and constructed levees to protect adjacent property.. This project improved connectivity by connecting more than 1,300 acres of local, state and federally protected lands along Humboldt Bay. This document summarizes the Coastal Conservancy's Staff Recommendation and authorization to provide funding for the implementation of the project.

Tornado Warnings In Three Southern States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Public Response Patterns, William Donner, Havidan Rodriguez, Walter Diaz
Tornado Warnings In Three Southern States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Public Response Patterns, William Donner, Havidan Rodriguez, Walter Diaz
Sociology Faculty Publications
Recent research in three Southern states supplied data describing the role community structure and culture played in shaping public response to tornado risks. The following study identifies and describes how residents received, made sense of, and ultimately used information to make decisions about responding to warnings. In addition to a range of theoretical concerns, research was also intended to develop a set of safety policies derived from what the data reveals about the social psychology of risk perception, economic constraints to shelter, and the cultural aspects of response.Data analysis reveals a diverse set of social factors governing community response to …

The Model Penal Code’S Wrong Turn: Renunciation As A Defense To Criminal Conspiracy, R. Michael Cassidy, Gregory I. Massing
The Model Penal Code’S Wrong Turn: Renunciation As A Defense To Criminal Conspiracy, R. Michael Cassidy, Gregory I. Massing
Florida Law Review
While the Model Penal Code was certainly one of the most influential developments in criminal law in the past century, the American Law Institute (ALI) took a seriously wrong turn by recognizing “renunciation” as a defense to the crime of conspiracy. Under the Model Penal Code formulation, a member of a conspiracy who later disavows the agreement and thwarts its objective (for example, by notifying authorities of the planned crime in order to prevent its completion) is afforded a complete defense to conspiracy liability. This defense has enormous implications for crimes involving national security and terrorism, which are typically planned …
Nineteenth Century Personal Jurisdiction Doctrine In A Twenty-First Century World, Charles W. "Rockey" Rhodes
Nineteenth Century Personal Jurisdiction Doctrine In A Twenty-First Century World, Charles W. "Rockey" Rhodes
Florida Law Review
The initial twenty-first century personal jurisdiction decisions from the Supreme Court reveal that personal jurisdiction doctrine has not changed much since the nineteenth century. The nomenclature has changed, realism has replaced formalism, some fictions purportedly have been discarded, and the adjudicatory reach of courts has somewhat expanded, but the doctrine retains the same conceptual core-the social contract philosophical tradition limiting the scope of governmental authority to those establishing the requisite relationship with the sovereign.
I first overview jurisdictional doctrine from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This revisionist account illustrates that International Shoe—especially considered in light of its progeny—is not …
