Urban Security Policy Management Analysis: The Role Of The Brazilian Armed Forces In Rio De Janeiro’S Urban Security Policy Of Pacification In The Favelas Of The Complexos Do Alemão And Penha., John Melo
Open Access Theses
In December 2010, the Governor of Rio de Janeiro, with the permission of the President of Brazil, initiated a military intervention in Rio’s de Janeiro Urban Security Policy of Favela Pacification, in the Penha and Alemão favela communities. This illustrated an unconventional use of the Brazilian Army within Brazil’s boundaries, one of an actor to implement urban security policies. The participation of the Brazilian Army in United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) (2004 to present) demonstrated to Brazil’s former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President Dilma Rousseff and Rio De Janeiro Governor Sergio Cabral that the Brazilian Army …

Sexual victimization is of great concern to the public, as evidenced by the legislative attention it has received over the last twenty years (Adkins, Huff, and Stageberg 2000; Levenson 2006; Sample and Kadleck 2008; Schram and Milloy 1995; Walker et al. 2005; Zevit 2006). To help increase public safety and address public concern, corrections departments nationwide have adopted some form of risk classification and assessment instrument for offenders who have been convicted of sex crimes (Richardson and Huebner 2006). Some of the most popular risk assessment instruments include the STATIC 99, RRASOR, MnSOST, SORAG, and ASRS (Richardson and Huebner 2006; …

Insights And Blind Spots: A Qualitative Analysis Of Risk In Psychiatric Security Review Board Hearings, Abby Kealani Balfour
Insights And Blind Spots: A Qualitative Analysis Of Risk In Psychiatric Security Review Board Hearings, Abby Kealani Balfour
Dissertations and Theses
The prevalence and consequences of the insanity plea, titled "guilty except for insanity" in the State of Oregon, are fraught with misconceptions. The use of the plea requires a complex set of interactions between the mental health and criminal justice systems, and comes with severe costs for people who use it. Most of the research on the psychological aspects of the insanity plea emphasizes empirical validity in the form of risk assessment instruments and/or the biomedical model with its focus on disease and illness. This thesis analyzes from community psychology and critical theory perspectives the decision process of hearings held …

Range Safety Concerns For Launching Winged Vehicles From Canaveral Spaceport, Wayne Devoid
Space Congress® Proceedings
The thrill of spaceflight has unleashed a flood of new space launch concepts in the United States. A host of reusable launch vehicles are being considered to launch private citizens on a suborbital jaunt to the edge of space. Private launch vehicle manufacturers are employing unique winged vehicle design concepts to attempt to significantly reduce the cost of launching space hardware. Additionally, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being tested for a myriad of applications such as border patrol, homeland security, military training, gathering scientific data, etc. Some of these UAV programs are poised to join space launch vehicles and commercial …

Teaming Up For Safer Cities: A Report From The Implementation Assessment Of The National Forum On Youth Violence Prevention (2012), Jeffrey A. Butts, Caterina Gouvis Roman, Kathleen A. Tomberg
Publications and Research
The efforts inspired by the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention will take time to develop, but survey results from the first 15 months of implementation suggest that the initiative may be generating some important changes. In five communities, survey respondents report a number of potentially valuable improvements. The results imply that the cities involved in the National Forum may be increasing opportunities for youth and improving the extent to which violence prevention approaches draw upon the perspectives and expertise of a broad range of community members. There are also indications that some cities are developing better overall capacity to …
