Study Of Human Activity In Video Data With An Emphasis On View-Invariance, Nazim Ashraf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The perception and understanding of human motion and action is an important area of research in computer vision that plays a crucial role in various applications such as surveillance, HCI, ergonomics, etc. In this thesis, we focus on the recognition of actions in the case of varying viewpoints and different and unknown camera intrinsic parameters. The challenges to be addressed include perspective distortions, differences in viewpoints, anthropometric variations, and the large degrees of freedom of articulated bodies. In addition, we are interested in methods that require little or no training. The current solutions to action recognition usually assume that there …

Proximate Retribution, Meghan J. Ryan
Proximate Retribution, Meghan J. Ryan
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
An essential element of the theory of retribution has been missing from courts’ and legal scholars’ analyses. While they have outlined a number of varieties of the theory and fleshed out their nuances, courts and scholars have largely neglected to examine which harms flowing from a criminal offender's conduct should be considered in determining that offender’s desert. The more remote harms caused by an offender’s conduct, such as the effects of his offenses on the families and friends of his victims or the effects of criminal conduct on society in general, are pervasive in communities across the nation. This Article …

Human Rights And Counterterrorism: A Contradiction Or Necessary Bedfellows?, Amos N. Guiora
Human Rights And Counterterrorism: A Contradiction Or Necessary Bedfellows?, Amos N. Guiora
Georgia Law Review
Ten years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, questions
remain regarding the relationship between human rights
and counterterrorism. The historical track record of the
Executive Branch, Supreme Court, and Congress in this
vein is troubling. While the contradiction suggested in
this Essay's title need not be the case, it is, nevertheless,
the persistent reality in American history.
This Essay assesses the current relationship between
human rights and counterterrorism. In doing so, it
reflects on wartime measures implemented by presidents
throughout U.S. history and recommends a way forward
that facilitates more effective protection of human rights
without impinging on legitimate national security …

Section 7 Of The Charter And The Principled Assignment Of Legislative Jurisdiction, Alana Klein
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper argues that in deciding whether state action is arbitrary, overbroad or disproportionate, contrary to section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, courts should look beyond the relationship between the means and ends of state action and toward broader considerations about the democratic context in which such action occurs. The case of Canada (Attorney General) v. PHS Community Services Society is taken as the paper’s starting point. The re, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the federal Minister of Health’s decision to deny Insite — a provincially supported safe injection site — an exemption from drug …
Charter Protection Against Unlawful Police Action: Less Black And White Than It Seems, Steve Coughlan
Charter Protection Against Unlawful Police Action: Less Black And White Than It Seems, Steve Coughlan
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Pre-Charter, in principle the police had limited powers. However, in practical terms it was not possible for a private citizen to object to all police action that fell outside those powers: realistically it was only if the police action were egregious enough to rise to the level of a tort or an offence that there was a mechanism for review. That is, there was a lot of grey area in between the things the police clearly were allowed to do and those they clearly were not allowed to do. The Charter changed that. By making “lawfulness” the standard for deciding …

Constitutional Cases 2011: An Overview, Patrick J. Monahan, Chanakya Sethi
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
The last year was a high-profile one for the Court in constitutional matters: Two cases, PHS and the Securities Reference, are especially noteworthy, not just for their political significance, but for their likely impact on constitutional jurisprudence in years to come. Several other decisions concerning freedom of association, equality rights and Aboriginal rights also reflected important developments in their respective areas, and in one case underscored deep divisions on the Court. Notably, 2011 was a year of unusual unanimity on the Court in the constitutional area: The justices agreed in all but four constitutional cases. That said, where the justices …
An Exploratory Study On Social Learning Theory, Social Bond Theory, Experiences With Police And Demographic Effects On College Student Attitudes Toward Police, Tyson Allen Mclean
An Exploratory Study On Social Learning Theory, Social Bond Theory, Experiences With Police And Demographic Effects On College Student Attitudes Toward Police, Tyson Allen Mclean
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Research on public attitudes toward police is principally conducted through survey methods focused on analyzing the effects of experiences with police, satisfaction with police services and respondent demographics. Most research collects data from the general public, which overall reports high levels of satisfaction with the police. However, few studies focus on the college student population and fewer integrate theoretical frameworks to explore this complex issue. This research incorporates tenets from social learning and social control theories as a conceptual framework from which the analysis is built. It also explores the role that personal and vicarious contact and demographic influences play …

2011 Legislative And Administrative Review, Patrick Graves, Keith Mosman, Shayna Rogers
Animal Law Review
It is my pleasure to introduce Animal Law’s fourteenth annual Legislative and Administrative Review. The 2011 Legislative and Administrative Review analyzes some of the year’s most groundbreaking developments in animal-related state and federal legislation, such as federal regulations of genetically engineered fish and attempts by state legislatures to overturn animal-related citizen initiatives.
Additionally, for the first time in Animal Law’s history, this year’s Review also includes an analysis of some of the most important animal-related administrative law developments of the year. Because many decisions impacting animals occur in the administrative arena, it is our hope that the administrative section complements …
