Cocaine-Induced Reinstatement Of A Conditioned Place Preference In Developing Rats: Involvement Of The D2 Receptor, Kimberly A. Badanich, Cheryl L. Kirstein Oct 2012

Cocaine-Induced Reinstatement Of A Conditioned Place Preference In Developing Rats: Involvement Of The D2 Receptor, Kimberly A. Badanich, Cheryl L. Kirstein

Psychology Faculty Publications

Reinstatement of conditioned place preferences have been used to investigate physiological mechanisms mediating drug-seeking behavior in adolescent and adult rodents; however, it is still unclear how psychostimulant exposure during adolescence affects neuron communication and whether these changes would elicit enhanced drug-seeking behavior later in adulthood. The present study determined whether the effects of intra-ventral tegmental area (VTA) or intra-nucleus accumbens septi (NAcc) dopamine (DA) D2 receptor antagonist infusions would block (or potentiate) cocaine-induced reinstatement of conditioned place preferences. Adolescent rats (postnatal day (PND 28–39)) were trained to express a cocaine place preference. The involvement of D2 receptors on cocaine-induced reinstatement …

Morph Matters: Aggression Bias In A Polymorphic Sparrow, Brent M. Horton, Mark E. Hauber, Donna L. Maney Oct 2012

Morph Matters: Aggression Bias In A Polymorphic Sparrow, Brent M. Horton, Mark E. Hauber, Donna L. Maney

Publications and Research

In species with discrete morphs exhibiting alternative behavioral strategies, individuals may vary their aggressive behavior in competitive encounters according to the phenotype of their opponent. Such aggression bias has been documented in multiple polymorphic species evolving under negative frequency-dependent selection, but it has not been well-studied under other selection regimes. We investigated this phenomenon in white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis), a passerine with plumage polychromatism maintained by disassortative mating. The two distinct color morphs differ with respect to reproductive strategy in that white-striped birds invest more in territorial aggression than tan-striped birds. Whether territorial aggression in this species is biased according …

The Urban Anthropologist As Flâneur; The Symbolic Pattern Of Indonesian Cities, Peter J.M. Nas Oct 2012

The Urban Anthropologist As Flâneur; The Symbolic Pattern Of Indonesian Cities, Peter J.M. Nas

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cities are places full of symbols. In the past decades, Indonesian cities have become the cradle of urban symbolism studies. In this article, the author presents the results of these studies. The cities researched differ tremendously, ranging from the national capital to provincial capitals and small towns; some of them, such as Jakarta, are purely colonial in origin, while others are more or less traditional in character. Some of them have a top-down symbolic structure, largely the product of government activities, while others have symbolic configurations which have a more grassroots character and are based in the religious domain. The …

Normalization Of China-Indonesia's Diplomatic Relations And The Role Of The Mianzi Concept, R. Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas Oct 2012

Normalization Of China-Indonesia's Diplomatic Relations And The Role Of The Mianzi Concept, R. Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This thesis examines the normalization of China-Indonesia's diplomatic relations in order to understand China's main motivation. The "micro-macro linkage" approach is used to uphold the empirical evidence that is enhanced by the mianzi concept. In Chinese culture, mianzi consists of honourable values and meanings. The result of this research shows that the changes in China's foreign policy priority have been caused by the demise of the socialist power in the late 1980s and the Tiananmen incident in 1989. Threat to China's sovereignty and unity has been the basis of the priority to keep the country's honour and existence. The term …

Carbohydrate Consumption And Fatigue: A Review, Jennifer R. Pharr Oct 2012

Carbohydrate Consumption And Fatigue: A Review, Jennifer R. Pharr

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Fatigue is a condition that negatively impacts quality of life and occurs in about twenty four percent of adults worldwide. Many factors may contribute to fatigue. One factor is the macronutrient composition of a person’s diet, particularly, the amount of simple carbohydrates. This paper is a review of the current literature and examines the relationship of carbohydrate consumption and fatigue to determine if a diet low in simple carbohydrates results in an improvement in fatigue ratings. Results of studies regarding carbohydrate consumption and fatigue vary, the preponderance demonstrate a positive relationship between simple carbohydrate consumption and fatigue. Additionally, diets low …

Towards A Unionized Professoriat: The Dilemma Of The Profession, Laszlo Hetenyi Oct 2012

Towards A Unionized Professoriat: The Dilemma Of The Profession, Laszlo Hetenyi

Education and Culture

No development since the Morrill Act is likely to produce more dramatic changes in higher education than the current trend towards collective bargaining in the professoriat. In 1966 only eleven institutions beyond the secondary level operated under faculty master contracts; by mid-1975 some 30 colleges and universities found themselves in this situation. Nor is the trend restricted to any one type of institution - only the elite private universities have, thus far, remained largely exempt. State and city systems (SUNY, CUNY, the New Jersey State Colleges), large public universities (Rutgers, Wayne State University), medium-size universities (Oakland University, Central Michigan University), …

Affirmative Action Plans: A Policy Analysis, Elizabeth Steiner Maccia Oct 2012

Affirmative Action Plans: A Policy Analysis, Elizabeth Steiner Maccia

Education and Culture

My position in this paper is not one of advocacy but one of analysis. There is no need for a philosopher to reinforce the voices of women. Nor am I here in a position of the compleat analyst. There is no need for a philosopher to reinforce the voices of scientists and other non-philosophic analysts. I am here as one whose intellectual loyalty is to the pursuit of logical and moral illumination.

In the pursuit of logical illumination, I shall attempt to explicate policy, policy analysis, and affirmative action plans. In the pursuit of moral illumination, I shall discuss the …

Perspective On Lead Toxicity: A Comparison Between The United States And Iran, Ali Pourmand, Tareq Khedir Al-Tiae, Maryann Mazer-Amirshahi

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Lead is a pervasive toxin that has been implicated in human poisonings throughout history. Exposure mitigation strategies in the United States and worldwide have led to a decline in symptomatic poisonings and population blood lead levels; however, lead remains a major health hazard. In this article, we review the history of lead toxicity, clinical manifestations ranging from subclinical and subtle features to life-threatening complications, and the subsequent public health interventions in the US. In addition, we explore common routes of lead exposure and the unique differences between the US and Iran. Although the US has made significant strides with regard …
