This online experiment explores how cues embedded in social-networking channels such as YouTube can influence individuals’ perceptions of public opinion regarding large social issues such as climate change. Using a simple cue, the number of views listed under a YouTube video, we examine how a high or low number of views might influence viewers’ perceptions about how “others” feel regarding climate change. Results suggest that social cues in the online environment can act similarly to cues in the off-line world by influencing perceptions of public opinion. Discussion focuses on how thought-leaders might consider the influential role of social norm perceptions …

Faith And Fidelity: Originalism And The Possibility Of Constitutional Redemption, Lawrence B. Solum
Faculty Scholarship
Could there be a progressive constitutional theory that is consistent with the core premises of originalism? This essay will answer this question with a focus on the views of Jack Balkin as they were developed in his recent monographs, Constitutional Redemption and Living Originalism. Part I is the introduction. Part II will address the question, “What is fidelity to the original meaning of the Constitution?” by laying out a brief history of originalist theory, identifying the core of originalist thought, and then explicating the idea of constitutional fidelity. Part III will address the question, “What is faith in the possibility …

Association Between Physical Activity Resource Quality And Use In Mexicans Through Objective Observation, Ann Pacheco, Erica Soltero, Scherezade K. Mama, Rebecca E. Lee
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Purpose: Nearly three-fourths (69.5%) of the Mexican population aged 15 and older is overweight or obese, and 37.7% fail to meet physical activity (PA) recommendations of 150 minutes per week. The prevalence of obesity in Mexican children has tripled since 1980 and is due to the imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. PA may reduce the prevalence of obesity in Mexican adults and youth. PA resources (PARs), such as parks and plazas, may aid in this effort, but little is known about the quality of resources in Mexico and their relationship to PA levels in adults and youth. The purpose …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Community based participatory research is a research strategy aimed at bridging the gap between research and practice. At the Good Samaritan Senior Center in San Antonio, TX there had seemed to be a disconnect between nutritional education provided to the seniors at their Senior Center and what the seniors did in practice. Despite significant efforts of the staff to provide nutrition education through classes and activities, 61% of the seniors attending still report an unhealthy body weight and many struggle with diabetes according to organizational assessments. The purpose of this study was to utilize Community Based Participatory Research to understand …

Race & Gender Disparities In The Embedding And Accumulation Of Childhood Poverty On Young Adult Bmi, Daphne C. Hernandez, Emily Pressler
Race & Gender Disparities In The Embedding And Accumulation Of Childhood Poverty On Young Adult Bmi, Daphne C. Hernandez, Emily Pressler
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Purpose: A disproportionate number of race/ethnic minorities are both impoverished and overweight compared to white populations. Experiencing poverty during childhood is positively correlated with being obese in adulthood, especially for females. However, it is unclear whether it is the embedding of childhood poverty (i.e. timing of childhood poverty in relation to children’s stage of development) or the accumulation (i.e. duration) of the exposure to childhood poverty which contributes to the race and gender disparities in young adult body mass index (BMI). Method: Data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Study of Youth and the Children and Young Adult file were used …

Struggling With The Freshman Fifteen: College Students’ Recollections Of Parents’ Memorable Messages About Weight, Charee M. Thompson, Sarah T. Zaitchik
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Considering the college years are considered a critical time in one’s life for changes in diet and exercise behavior and an increase in weight gain, this study explored the significant and impactful communication between college students and their parents during this transitional period. Using open-ended responses to an online questionnaire (N = 222), we explored the Memorable Messages (Knapp, Stohl, & Reardon, 1981) college students recall receiving from their parents about overweight and obesity. Students’ responses demonstrate that not only is weight a difficult topic to talk about, but it is also a difficult issue for people to manage on …

Tales Of Gaijin: Health Privacy Perspectives Of Foreign English Teachers In Japan, Nathaniel Simmons
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In order to understand the health experiences of Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) of English in Japan, I conducted ten in-depth interviews with native English-speaking ALTs in Japan. Throughout the interviews, ALTs expressed strong privacy concerns, perceived violations, and ways in which they managed privacy boundaries. Through reflexive thematic analysis (Lindlof & Taylor, 2002), I utilized Petronio’s (1991, 2000, 2002) Communication Privacy Management theory as a lens to make sense of ALTs’ privacy management. ALTs not only identified private information they concealed from their supervisor and coworkers, potential resources of assistance, but they revealed factors that influence their privacy boundary management …

Educationally Recovering Dewey In Curriculum, William H. Schubert
Education and Culture
To educationally recover something (or somebody, as the title suggests vis-a-vis Dewey) invokes at least two assumptions: (1) that it has been covered before, thus, it can be recovered; and (2) that it somehow increases perspec-tive, insight, or understanding, and is therefore educational. Clearly, the work of John Dewey permeates the literature of curriculum studies. On numerous occasions (Schubert, 1980, 1982a, 1982c, 1986a) I have discussed an experientalist tradition in curriculum discourse that stems from writings of Francis W. Parker, William James, and principally John Dewey. It is developed through the writings of Boyd Bode, Harold Rugg, George …

A Kidney For Christmas, Stephen Scholand
The Medicine Forum
When Asmar Lawrence first walked into the small examining room in the Jefferson Hospital Ambulatory Practice (JHAP) Clinic, we both had no idea what the future would hold. It was July, 1998 and I was fresh from medical school. Each week, I looked forward to the JHAP experience to develop my clinical skills and follow patients longitudinally. No longer was my learning prescribed from a textbook, this was the 'real world' of medicine where anything could happen and I was supposed to be in control of it. The long white coat probably helped perpetuate some of that illusion. Fortunately our …
