How Selective Is Social Learning In Dolphins?, Stan A. Kuczaj Ii, Deirdre Yeater, Lauren Highfill Jan 2012

How Selective Is Social Learning In Dolphins?, Stan A. Kuczaj Ii, Deirdre Yeater, Lauren Highfill

Psychology Faculty Publications

Social learning is an important aspect of dolphin social life and dolphin behavioral development. In addition to vocal social learning, dolphins discover behaviors for foraging, play, and social interactions by observing other members of their social group. But dolphins neither indiscriminately observe nor mindlessly mimic other dolphins. To the contrary, dolphin calves are quite selective in their choices of who to observe and/or imitate. Calves are most likely to learn foraging behaviors from their mothers, but they are more likely to watch and reproduce the play behaviors of other calves than the play behaviors of adult dolphins (including their mothers). …

The New Definition Of “Because Of ”: The Supreme Court Distinguishes Identical Causation Language In Title Vii And The Adea In Gross V. Fbl Financial Services, Inc., 129 S. Ct. 2343 (2009), Nicholas J. Thielen Jan 2012

The New Definition Of “Because Of ”: The Supreme Court Distinguishes Identical Causation Language In Title Vii And The Adea In Gross V. Fbl Financial Services, Inc., 129 S. Ct. 2343 (2009), Nicholas J. Thielen

Nebraska Law Review

Both Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (CRA) of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) prohibit employers from making an adverse employment decision “because of” certain improper criteria. The Supreme Court’s opinion in Gross v. FBL Financial Services, Inc. explored the plain meaning of “because of” to determine the threshold for causation required under the ADEA. Curiously, the Gross Court came to a different conclusion than the Justices who engaged in the same exploration of “because of” under Title VII in Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins. The Court’s underdeveloped plain meaning argument and failure …

Punishing Temporary Drug-Induced Insanity: An Analysis Of State V. Hotz, 281 Neb. 260, 795 N.W.2d 645 (2011), Mark A. Grimes Jan 2012

Punishing Temporary Drug-Induced Insanity: An Analysis Of State V. Hotz, 281 Neb. 260, 795 N.W.2d 645 (2011), Mark A. Grimes

Nebraska Law Review

On a cold December afternoon, two roommates—Joseph Hotz and Kenneth Pfeiffer—consumed psilocybin mushrooms. Two hours later, Pfeiffer was dead by Hotz’s hands. The intervening events were more bizarre and horrific than any after-school special. By stabbing his roommate to death in the midst of a drug-induced paranoia, Hotz did the unthinkable while he was unable to think. Defenses that palliate a defendant’s criminal liability because of intoxication are “[f]requently reviled” and “ever-controversial.” State v. Hotz raises the difficult question of whether a criminal intent formed in the midst of temporary drug-induced insanity is one deserving of punishment. The answer depends …

Changemaking: Building Strategic Competence, Prudence Brown Jan 2012

Changemaking: Building Strategic Competence, Prudence Brown

The Foundation Review

· Foundations have begun to recognize that how they go about their work is as important as what they support. To be better armed to address the urgent challenges facing Detroit’s children, the Skillman Foundation has adopted a changemaking role that draws upon and leverages its knowledge, networks, and civic reputation to supplement its grantmaking investments.

· Effective changemaking depends on the accrual of trust and respect that is built over time in relationships with community residents and stakeholders, public and private partners, and others with influence and resources.

· Changemaking required the foundation to build new strategic competencies such …

· The success of the community-foundation approach to LCAN development is evident both in the …

Practice, Practice, Practice: Preliminary Findings From An Evidence-Based Practice Funding Initiative At The Peter And Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation, Nicholas G. Randell Jan 2012

Practice, Practice, Practice: Preliminary Findings From An Evidence-Based Practice Funding Initiative At The Peter And Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation, Nicholas G. Randell

The Foundation Review

· The Tower Foundation supported a five-year initiative to support the implementation of evidencebased practices (EBP). The average award was a three-year award of $84,050.

· The underlying grantmaking theory of change was that behavioral health providers could bring empirically tested protocols to their communities and sustain them over time if supported by long-term funding to support the real costs of implementation (e.g., training, technical assistance, adherence to program protocols, and cultural change).

· Grantees cited the high cost of training, certification, and recertification – especially in the face of high staff turnover – as a primary challenge to implementing …

Workplace Reform In A Jobless Recovery, Marcia L. Mccormick Jan 2012

Workplace Reform In A Jobless Recovery, Marcia L. Mccormick

All Faculty Scholarship

In 2012, the United States was recovering from a recession and policy makers were debating how to solve the country’s economy. This essay looks at the labor and employment reforms (or lack thereof) of President Obama’s first term, and the differing views of the role of government in creating jobs. The article challenges us to think beyond the two solutions commonly discussed: de-regulation and a “New Deal” program.

There are ways current lawmakers could come together to help protect jobs. Some of the solutions offered by the article include using automatic contribution plans, promoting part-time work, and giving employees more …

An Empirical Analysis Of Health Implications And Costs Of Obesity In Appalachia, Saman Janaranjana Herath Bandara Jan 2012

An Empirical Analysis Of Health Implications And Costs Of Obesity In Appalachia, Saman Janaranjana Herath Bandara

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Obesity is a major health problem in the United States (U.S.) and approximately 34 percent of the U.S. adult population is obese. Studies using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and many other research findings warn that if the current trend of obesity continues, 50 percent of the U.S. population will be obese in 2030. Unfortunately, several diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes (type II), hypertension, cancer, arthritis, asthma, and some psychological disorders are linked with obesity. Obesity increases the risk of premature mortality, and nearly 300,000 annual deaths are associated …

The Role Of Narcissism On Concerns For Sns Privacy: Vulnerable Narcissism In Threatening Situations, Elizabeth A. Kwolek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study aims to identify psychological factors that predict one's likelihood to disengage with privacy-threatening activities on Social Networking Sites (SNS). Particularly, it pays special attention to the concept of narcissism and its impact on one's response to SNS privacy-threatening situations. By evaluating narcissism in two different ways --- grandiose and vulnerable --- the study attempts to provide a better understanding of the role of narcissism in SNS usage and concerns over privacy issues. Study I shows that vulnerable narcissism has a significant influence on consumers' likelihood of disengaging with privacy-threatening activities on SNS while grandiose narcissism has no influence. …

A Question Of Life Or Death: Suicide And Survival In The Union Army, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis Jan 2012

A Question Of Life Or Death: Suicide And Survival In The Union Army, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studying the Civil War soldier involves a quest to comprehend how they soldiers understood and managed their war experiences. Under the conditions of soldier life and the horrific violence of Civil War battles, mental trauma and suicide would not be unthinkable consequences. Union soldiers did commit suicide during the war, sometimes in response to the trauma of battle, hospital, or prison camp. However, suicide in fact was a very small percentage of casualties in the Union army, representing less than one percent of the losses during the war.;This thesis examines the dual nature of suicide in the Union army. On …

Three Essays On Political Economy And Development, Adam Pellillo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is a collection of three essays that examine how political economy and institutional factors influence development outcomes. In Chapter 1, I introduce each essay and argue that it is important to incorporate political economy and institutional considerations into studies in development economics. Chapter 2 examines the political economy of development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by assessing the impact of conflict and local insecurity on household-level economic conditions across the country. Chapter 3 analyzes the political economy of infant mortality rates across the developing world by using an usually large microlevel dataset for 70 developing countries. …

Systematic Evaluation Of Variables That Contribute To Noncompliance: A Replication And Extension, Paige M. Mckerchar, Layla Abby

Research, Publications & Creative Work

The effects of time-out and escape extinction were examined with 2 preschoolers after we identified variables that may have resulted in noncompliance. Results of a functional analysis showed that noncompliance was highest in the escape condition for both participants. During the treatment evaluation, escape extinction resulted in greater reductions in noncompliance relative to time-out.

Stereotypes And Self-Perceptions Of Physical Education Pre-Service Teachers, Michael Spittle, Felicity Petering, Peter Kremer, Sharna Spittle

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Stereotypes and self-perceptions are important in understanding how people develop their self-knowledge and social identity, become members of groups, and view groups and their members. While we have some understanding of the stereotypical view of the physical education teacher, we currently have little knowledge of how physical education pre-service teachers (students studying a physical education degree) are stereotyped, and also if there is any relationship between these stereotypes and how physical education pre-service teachers perceive themselves. The purpose of this study was to examine the stereotypes and self-perceptions of physical education pre-service teachers. The aims were to describe how physical …

Personalising Learning In Teacher Education Through The Use Of Technology, Mellita M. Jones, Karen J. Mclean Jan 2012

Personalising Learning In Teacher Education Through The Use Of Technology, Mellita M. Jones, Karen J. Mclean

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The meaningful integration of technology in teaching and learning is consistently called for in all sectors of education. Recently it has appeared as a key tenet for achieving what has been termed as personalising learning. Personalising learning, a concept that addresses a range of current best-practice approaches with an added emphasis on ICT and the voice of individual learners, is becoming more prevalent in both general discussion, and in some countries, in policy regarding education. If its prevalence continues to grow, teacher educators need to consider how they too can incorporate personalising learning approaches in their courses to ensure graduate …

Training Deictic Relational Responding In People With Schizophrenia, John O'Neill Jan 2012

Training Deictic Relational Responding In People With Schizophrenia, John O'Neill

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to replicate and extend recent findings in the functional contextual literature by 1) establishing complex deictic relational responding skills in 3 persons diagnosed with Schizophrenia and mild-moderate Mental Retardation and 2) assessing generalization through pre and post-instructional measures of Social Anhedonia and Theory of Mind functioning. Results suggest that increasingly complex levels of deictic relational responses were acquired and mastered by all 3 participants and that generalization extended to the Deceptive Container Task (ToM levels 4 & 5) and Hinting Task. Support is provided for the notion that perspective taking skills might be shaped …

Comparing Prompt Delay And Total Communication For Training Vocal Intraverbals In Children With Autism, Rosana Pesantez Jan 2012

Comparing Prompt Delay And Total Communication For Training Vocal Intraverbals In Children With Autism, Rosana Pesantez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Verbal behavior encompasses a wide range of aspects in our everyday lives and in the activities of a society. Many verbal behavior interventions often include programs to teach answering questions, these responses are referred to as intraverbals. Previous research has demonstrated a higher rate of acquisition of verbal targets such as mands and tacts for children with a limited verbal repertoire when a presentation of both sign and vocal prompts occur simultaneously (Total Communication), in comparison to sign-alone or vocal-alone trainings. However, an important variable not often examined in the literature is the comparison of Total Communication (TC) and …

This paper examines a collaborative project between the department of Construction Management and Technology and the departme nt of Quantity Surveying at Technological University of Dublin. The term “collaborative learning” refers to an instruction method in which students at various performance levels work together in small groups toward a common goal. The students are responsible for one another’s learning as well as their own (Dillenbourg, 1999) The objectives of this collaborative project are: 1.Promote interaction between students from different but related courses. 2.Enhance student’s ability to think creatively, solve problems, and make decisions as a team. 3.Evaluate the benefits of using …

Aggregation Of Probabilities And Illogic, Kevin M. Clermont Jan 2012

Aggregation Of Probabilities And Illogic, Kevin M. Clermont

Georgia Law Review

Classical logic and probability theory produce in law the
troublesome paradox of aggregation of claims: On the
other hand, logic seems to tell us that the aggregated
likelihood of alternative claims elevates in response to
probability's rules; thus, if the plaintiff almost proves
claim A and almost proves an alternative but independent
claim B, then the plaintiff should win one. On the other
hand, because the law requires each claim to meet the
standard of proof, and thus refuses to apply the proof
standard to the aggregation, the plaintiff loses in
actuality; legal scholars despair in consequences-
including Ariel Porat …

Trademark And Copyright Enforcement In The Shadow Of Ip Law, William T. Gallagher Jan 2012

Trademark And Copyright Enforcement In The Shadow Of Ip Law, William T. Gallagher

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

In recent years, as Congress has created new intellectual property (IP) rights and courts have often interpreted those rights broadly, legal scholars have frequently decried the expanded scope of protection afforded IP owners in most substantive areas of IP law. According to this critique, the over-expansion of IP rights throughout the past two decades harms competition, chills free speech, and diminishes the public domain as increasingly broad areas of social life are brought within the scope of strong IP protection. While this over-expansion theory reflects an important—indeed, foundational—policy debate concerning the proper balance between IP owners’ rights and the public’s …
