Probing Understanding: Emergent Second Language Readers’ Visual Literacy / Marina Binti Mohd Arif, Mohd Arif Marina

Student Works (2010-2019)

Due to the visually saturated world we live in more children are becoming visual learners but the school curriculum is yet to acknowledge this change and a lot of literacy teaching still focuses on the ability to decode and encode printed words. There is a need then to look into the potential of visuals in the teaching of second language literacy and to acknowledge the individual differences and needs of young learners. This study was conducted to better understand emergent second language readers’ visual literacy by looking at the meaning-making process that children engage in when transacting with books that …

Evaluation Of The Dopamine And Serotonin Receptor Binding Activity Of Selected Aporphines / Vani A/P Munusamy, Munusamy Vani

Student Works (2010-2019)

Alteration in dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission influences various neurological and mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and drug abuse. The naturally occurring aporphine alkaloids are well known for their activity at D1, D2 and 5-HT1A receptors, but only a few have been shown to bind to the 5-HT2A receptor. Aim of this study was to identify aporphines with significant activity at dopamine and serotonin receptors using both in silico and in vitro screening approaches. A 3D homology model of the rat 5-HT2A receptor was generated using the crystal structure of the human β2-adrenergic receptor (PDB ID: 2RH1) …

Sabah Malay Dialect : Phonological Differentiation In Social Context / Jane Wong Kon Ling, Jane Kon Ling Wong Jan 2012

Sabah Malay Dialect : Phonological Differentiation In Social Context / Jane Wong Kon Ling, Jane Kon Ling Wong

Student Works (2010-2019)

Sabah Malay Dialect (SMD) or ‘the speech of Sabah’ is used widely as a lingua franca in interaction between different ethnic groups, and within single groups in Sabah. The broad sociolinguistic setting of the people of Sabah has influenced the formation of SMD. This is enhanced by migrations from Indonesia, the Philippines and other states in Malaysia. Consequently, the vast socio-cultural and socio-economic settings have resulted in language variations in SMD. SMD displays distinctiveness especially in its phonology compared to Standard Malay and other dialects. SMD is indeed a dialect in its own right as shown by this study. Adopting …

Many institutions of higher education are incorporating e-learning into their curriculum. Several factors though, need to be taken into consideration when implementing e-learning. One way to help in overcoming barriers facing efforts of higher education in Palestine to move towards implementing e-learning is to adopt blended learning approach. The research is aimed at developing a model of blended learning that can be applied in traditional universities in Palestine. Information was first obtained through a questionnaire distributed among faculty members in Palestine to determine the problems and needs of implementing e-learning in higher education. Factors for blended learning were determined based …

A Custom Fit: Tailoring Texas Civil Jury Selection Procedures To Case Tiers., Jarod S. Gonzalez Jan 2012

A Custom Fit: Tailoring Texas Civil Jury Selection Procedures To Case Tiers., Jarod S. Gonzalez

St. Mary's Law Journal

Citizens serving on a civil jury are entrusted with making factual decisions about disputes that impact legal rights and remedies of litigants and set standards for the behavior of the public. Unfortunately, civil jury trials take place less frequently in twenty-first century Texas than in prior eras. Part of the justice system’s rejuvenation should involve a re-evaluation and improvement of the current process for selecting civil juries. Currently, the primary flaw in Texas jury selection procedures is the one-size-fits-all approach. Because some cases need twelve impartial jurors who are lay persons, and others require twelve people who are knowledgeable of …

Expanding Protective Order Coverage., Kellie K. Player Jan 2012

Expanding Protective Order Coverage., Kellie K. Player

St. Mary's Law Journal

The Texas legislature should eliminate the relationship requirement for a protective order. Although the Texas legislature passed the Kristy Appleby Act, which expanded the definition of dating violence, some victims of domestic violence may still be unable to qualify for a protective order. Specifically, some third-party individuals in a love triangle may not be eligible to receive a protective order. In Texas, a potential or current victim of domestic abuse needs to demonstrate a relationship with the perpetrator. Despite the broadened definition of relationship, some potential victims may still be unable to meet this burden. If the person cannot, they …

Economic Development And The Problem With The Problem-Solving Approach, Justin Deystone Jan 2012

Economic Development And The Problem With The Problem-Solving Approach, Justin Deystone

Publications

Scholars and practitioners alike have recently pointed to the idea of a "new moment" in the field of law and economic development, as well as a hope for a fruitful rethinking of political economy. The idea is that we have passed out of the period of high "neoliberalism," associated at one time with Reagan, Thatcher, and the so-called Washington Consensus and now eclipsed by the ascendance of the Obama Administration. The hope attending the new consensus is that, in the wake of neoliberal law and policy, the field of law and development might be on the verge of a new …

Voices In Concert: Communication Ethnography Of Pentecostal Worship, Bruce C. Coats Jan 2012

Voices In Concert: Communication Ethnography Of Pentecostal Worship, Bruce C. Coats

Dissertations (1934 -)

We know little about communication in Pentecostal worship service outside of the practice of tongues-speech. Pentecostals uniquely interpret communicative activity as distinctive factors in their identity; yet no research identifies the unique national speech codes operating with the Pentecostal churches. This study applied decreased that knowledge gap using Philipsen's Speech Codes Theory to analyzing the structure and interpretation of Pentecostal worship services, analyzing individual congregations in relationship with local culture and situated within the national Pentecostal movement. Fisher's narrative paradigm was applied to worship services to describe the narrative of a worship service as it extended in the everyday lives …

Mobile Based Symptom Management For Palliative Care, Md Munirul Haque Jan 2012

Mobile Based Symptom Management For Palliative Care, Md Munirul Haque

Dissertations (1934 -)

The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of life of terminally ill patients through the management of pain and other symptoms. Though the term `palliative care' is well known in the developed world, it is relatively a new term in the developing world. According to WHO, each year 4.8 million people suffering from severe pain caused by cancer, fail to receive treatment due to lack of resources and other barriers.

In this thesis we have elaborated on the challenges faced by the rural breast cancer (BC) patients of Bangladesh and a solution for their palliative care treatment. …

Ptsd And Its Relation To Trauma And Offending In Incarcerated Juveniles., Elizabeth E. Stacom Jan 2012

Ptsd And Its Relation To Trauma And Offending In Incarcerated Juveniles., Elizabeth E. Stacom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research indicates that individuals who perpetuate abuse may also have a history of experiencing abuse (Ford & Linney, 1995; Worling, 1995). Yet, not all abused children will engage in offending behavior (Becker & Hunter, 1997). This study investigated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), caregiver instability, and low social support, and how these factors relate to offending behavior. Participants were 32 juveniles with sexual offenses (SO), 40 juveniles with violent nonsexual offenses (VO), and 18 juveniles with nonsexual nonviolent offenses (NSVO) detained at the West Virginia Home for Youth in Salem, WV. The participants reported directly experiencing and witnessing a mean of …

Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley Jan 2012

Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Many institutions of higher education have implemented local and global engagement opportunities as a way to expose both students and faculty to different cultures and further their knowledge of those cultures. One of the primary goals of these cultural experiences is for students and faculty to become more culturally competent. However, it is possible that our current way of thinking and promoting cultural competency within education specifically may not go deep enough and could be considered limiting in the ways we partner, collaborate, and interact with people groups different than ourselves. Cultural humility, a construct currently accepted in some professional …

Leadership In Private Christian Schools: Perceptions Of Administrators, Suzanne Harrison Jan 2012

Leadership In Private Christian Schools: Perceptions Of Administrators, Suzanne Harrison

Aufarbeitung Der Vergangenheit Through The Medium Of Myth In Heinrich Böll's Short Stories Der Mann Mit Den Messern And Nicht Nur Zur Weihnachtszeit, Marcus James Cardarelli

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

German history of the 20th century was marked with unimaginable horrors and hardship. Both the First and Second World Wars left an indelible mark on the German psyche. Most specifically, the consequences of the Second World War were a turning point in German notions of cultural identity. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the various manners by which Heinrich Böll deals with the emerging cultural crisis in the post-war period of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. I have chosen two of his short stories, Der Mann mit den Messern (1948) and Nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit (1951), for …

Policy Learning And The Development Of Renewable Energy Policy In The United Kingdom, Sally Murrall-Smith Jan 2012

Policy Learning And The Development Of Renewable Energy Policy In The United Kingdom, Sally Murrall-Smith

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Despite the UK’s abundance of renewable energy sources and the imperative for renewable energy to make a significant contribution to addressing the problems of climate change and fossil-fuel dependency, renewable energy capacity in the UK has developed slowly compared with some other EU states. The UK has introduced a succession of policies to promote renewable energy, but so far these have failed to meet national and EU targets. This signals the need for detailed examination of the reasons for these ‘failures’ and, in particular, the extent, nature and constraints on ‘policy learning’ within UK renewable energy policy. Policy learning has …

Parental Care And The Development Of The Parent Offspring Conflict In Discus Fish (Symphysodon Spp.), Jonathan Buckley Jan 2012

Parental Care And The Development Of The Parent Offspring Conflict In Discus Fish (Symphysodon Spp.), Jonathan Buckley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Parental care has evolved across the animal kingdom to increase the probability of offspring surviving in an environment fraught with danger. While parental care is common among mammals and birds, it is relatively rare in fish with the vast majority of fish showing no form of parental care at all, whilst those that do, often just provide parental care to developing eggs pre-hatch. The provision of parental care in discus fish (Symphysodon spp.) is, therefore, interesting in that parents provide mucus to offspring as a source of nutrition during the first few weeks of care. In mammals this post-birth provision …

Automated Human Screening For Detecting Concealed Knowledge, Nathan W. Twyman Jan 2012

Automated Human Screening For Detecting Concealed Knowledge, Nathan W. Twyman

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Screening individuals for concealed knowledge has traditionally been the purview of professional interrogators investigating a crime. But the ability to detect when a person is hiding important information would be of high value to many other fields and functions. This dissertation proposes design principles for and reports on an implementation and empirical evaluation of a non-invasive, automated system for human screening. The screening system design (termed an automated screening kiosk or ASK) is patterned after a standard interviewing method called the Concealed Information Test (CIT), which is built on theories explaining psychophysiological and behavioral effects of human orienting and defensive …

Eastern Experiential Learning: Eastern Principles For Learning Wholeness, Mai P. Trinh, David A. Kolb Jan 2012

Eastern Experiential Learning: Eastern Principles For Learning Wholeness, Mai P. Trinh, David A. Kolb

Management Faculty Publications

Although Experiential Learning Theory originated in the work of Western scholars, many of their theoretical principles have a decidedly Eastern orientation. In this essay we draw out these Eastern principles of experiential learning and suggest an Eastern perspective on learning wholeness in one's life and career based on an ontological approach to adult development that emphasizes existential ways of being in the here and now-centering, balance, harmony and flowing in the watercourse way.

Educating And Communicating Through Sociolinguistic Registers: Adolescent Client, Chanaé Jones, Brittany Mayer Jan 2012

Educating And Communicating Through Sociolinguistic Registers: Adolescent Client, Chanaé Jones, Brittany Mayer

Occupational Therapy Capstones

PROBLEM: Currently tests such as the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) and ACT (American College Testing), as well as employment use what is identified as formal sociolinguistic register (Joos, 1967 & Payne, 2005). Payne (2005) built upon Joos’ (1967) definition and presented five registers: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimates. Formal register is defined as; one-way participation, no interruption such as is seen with introductions between stangers. Technical vocabulary; “fuzzy semantics" or exact definitions are important. Montano-Harmon (1991) found that many minority and poor students do not have access to formal register at home but rather tend to rely primarily in …

Students' Experience Of Learning To Use Occupation As Intervention On Fieldwork In Medical Settings, Kelli Atkinson, Nicole Knutson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

There are few studies that focus on students’ experiences of fieldwork; specifically, investigating how students learn to use occupation. In addition, there is limited research regarding the students’ learning to use occupation-based interventions in medical settings. The purpose of this independent study was to explore students’ experience of learning to use occupation as intervention on fieldwork in medical settings and specific strategies used by students and fieldwork educators for learning to use occupation as intervention. A phenomenological, qualitative research design was used with this study. Participants were recruited through the use of the University of North Dakota occupational therapy department …

Bringing Occupation To Long-Term-Care Setting, Danielle Shepers, Stephanie Blonigen Jan 2012

Bringing Occupation To Long-Term-Care Setting, Danielle Shepers, Stephanie Blonigen

Occupational Therapy Capstones

As a person enters a long-term-care (LTC) facility, they lose their home, independence, possessions and routine (O'Sullivanm, 2004). Adopting a meaningful occupational or social role may improve psychological well-being in elders (Keung Yuen, Huang, Burik, & Smith, 2008). There is a need for resources to support the use of occupations as treatment modalities in LTC setting. The purpose of this scholarly project is to address this need.

A literature review was conducted using AOTA, AJOT, OT Practice, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and PubMed on topics relating to the populations served in LTC, and types of OT intervention used in LTC. Issues concerning …

A Community-Based Occupational Therapy Wellness Program For Adult Clients With Traumatic Brain Injury, Cody Link, Amanda Myklebust Jan 2012

A Community-Based Occupational Therapy Wellness Program For Adult Clients With Traumatic Brain Injury, Cody Link, Amanda Myklebust

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Each year in the United States, over 1.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). TBI can cause a variety of long-term problems with thinking, sensation, language, sensorimotor, and emotions (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). These lead to long-term problems in areas of social participation, emotional wellness, work and volunteer participation, community integration, leisure participation, and healthy life balance. This indicates the need for continuing occupational therapy to address these problem areas. Communitybased interventions provide a service to promote health in an individual’s natural environment and can focus on a …

Ride The Wave: A Guide For Implementing Biofeedback In Occupation-Based Interventions In A Rehabilitation Setting, Sarah Averett, Johanna Meister

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Historical and current research studying EMG biofeedback has shown this method to be an effective adjunct to occupational therapy intervention. Utilizing EMG biofeedback has been shown through research as effective in improving functional gains. The use of biofeedback allows an individual to visualize unseen physiological processes which are unique to each individual and provide better understanding of otherwise unseen functions (Laurenção, Battistella, Moran de Britto, Tsukimoto, & Mayizaki, 2008). An extensive literature review and students’ observations of clinical occupational therapy practice led the investigators to conclude that EMG biofeedback was a viable treatment method which has not been utilized to …
