Rooted In Relationships: How Personal And Workplace Social Capital Help Sustain Principal Leadership, Megan Scelfo Jan 2026

Rooted In Relationships: How Personal And Workplace Social Capital Help Sustain Principal Leadership, Megan Scelfo

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

It takes five or more years to fully realize a vision for change in any organization (Fullan, 2002; Snodgrass Rangel, 2018), yet the average tenure for a public-school principal in their same school is 4.5 years (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2023). This work adds to our understanding of what factors may improve principal longevity to positively impact school effectiveness. This multiple-case study (Yin, 2018) incorporated a survey and interviews to determine how components of social capital (Bourdieu,1986; Coleman, 1988; Tsounis 2022, Wang et al., 2014) may impact the retention of Pennsylvania public school principals. The survey asked about …

Nurse-Facilitated Cbt-I Using The Cbt-I Coach Free Application, David Berhanu Mr.

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

Chronic insomnia is a prevalent condition associated with significant physical, psychological, and functional impairment. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended as first-line treatment, access remains limited, resulting in continued reliance on pharmacologic therapies. This DNP project evaluated the effectiveness of a nurse practitioner (NP)-facilitated CBT-I program, supported by the CBT-I Coach, in improving sleep outcomes and reducing reliance on sleep medications among adults with chronic insomnia in an outpatient setting. Methods: A pre–post intervention design was utilized. Adult participants with chronic insomnia were enrolled in a structured CBT-I program consisting of an initial 60-minute intake session followed …

Empowerment Vs. Oversight: Student Perspectives On Classroom Genai Policies, Jessica A. Drass

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

The widespread availability of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools and their rapid evolution has prompted faculty and institutions to develop classroom policies in effort to manage use, yet little empirical research exists on how such policies impact students. This qualitative study sought to explore how higher education students define academic integrity and GenAI’s place within it, how they perceive and evaluate classroom GenAI policies, and how such policies shape their academic self-efficacy, motivation, and engagement. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with sixteen undergraduate and graduate students at a mid-sized public university located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Interview …

Experiences With The Criminal Justice System: How Discriminatory Policing Impact Minorities Economically, Gerard I. Boykin

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

Systemic racism is an ailment that has plagued the United States since its inception. This research will highlight previous studies on the topic of race relating to discriminatory policing and injustices within the criminal justice system. Solutions will be offered as to the best remedies to rid the criminal justice system of inequalities faced by those within minority communities. Over-policing is one tactic used within the criminal justice system that targets minorities. Further, minorities are significantly more likely to receive longer prison sentences than White male counterparts for otherwise similar crimes. This study will also engage recently released prisoners to …

Preceptor Preparedness And Its Effect On Newly Hired Nurse Retention, Nena Theresa Hatchett Jan 2026

Preceptor Preparedness And Its Effect On Newly Hired Nurse Retention, Nena Theresa Hatchett

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

Abstract

The transition from nursing student to professional practice is a high-risk period for newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNs), often associated with role strain, limited clinical confidence, and high turnover. Structured preceptor mentorship programs have been identified as critical interventions to support both preceptors and NGRNs, enhancing job satisfaction, instruction competence, and workforce retention. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project employed a quality improvement design guided by Lewin’s Change Theory to evaluate the impact of a structured preceptor mentorship program in a mid-sized acute care hospital. Five preceptors and twelve NGRNs participated in an eight-week intervention that included mentor …

A Discrit And Anticapitalist Approach To Resisting Hustle Culture And Practicing Slow Education Through Book Club Professional Development, Angela Zhang Jan 2026

A Discrit And Anticapitalist Approach To Resisting Hustle Culture And Practicing Slow Education Through Book Club Professional Development, Angela Zhang

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

This thesis highlights hustle culture as a significant issue that impacts education today. While the concern stemmed from a personal experience with so-called burnout, the term “hustle culture” is used to emphasize the systemic nature of the overwork, burnout, and exhaustion that teachers and students face, particularly the intersections of capitalism and ableism. When tracing the history and current manifestations of hustle culture, it becomes clear that educational institutions, policies, practices, and interactions play a major role in normalizing, perpetuating, and romanticizing hustle culture as the pathway to individual success and wealth in a capitalist system. In reality, hustle culture …

The Disenchanted Grove: Postcolonial Modernity And The Decline Of Ri’I Bamboo Governance In Flores, Indonesia, Handoyo Handoyo, Puji Hastuti, Lukas Rumboko Wibowo, Budiyanto Dwi Prasetyo, Surati Surati, Kresno Agus Hendarto, Lila Juniyanti, Dewi Ratna Kurnia Sari, Desmiwati Desmiwati, Sanusi Sanusi, Ane Dwi Septina, Ramawati Ramawati

Forest and Society

This article explores the erosion of ri’i, a traditional ecological governance system practiced by the Ngadha people in Flores, Indonesia, in the face of modernization and postcolonial development. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with cultural elders, ritual practitioners, and local authorities, the study documents how ri’i—a ritual-based regulatory system for bamboo resource management—has been progressively dismantled through the combined pressures of technocratic governance, land commodification, and shifts toward individualism. Empirically, the main drivers identified are state land certification (including Sertifikat Hak Milik, SHM) and village modernization campaigns, which reconfigure communal tenure and everyday governance practices. Once embedded …

Gender, And Socioeconomic Status In School-Based Speech-Language Pathology Decision-Making For Adolescents With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Critically Appraised Topic, Geneva Renee Toledo

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Purpose: Adolescents are at greater risk for traumatic brain injury (TBI), and TBI-related symptoms may contribute to disciplinary actions that increase their risk of entering the school-toconfinement pipeline. Given the disproportionate representation of racially marginalized male adolescents within this pipeline, this critically appraised topic (CAT) examined how race, gender, and socioeconomic status may influence school-based speech-language pathology (SLP) services and clinical decision-making following TBI. Method: A structured search of five electronic databases was conducted to identify studies examining speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs’) clinical decision-making and management of adolescents with TBI in relation to race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Relevant studies were …

Impact Of Social Media On Self Esteem And Body Image, Sunayana Sri Acharya Goribidnur Sudheendra

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

This study examined how idealized self-presentation on social media relates to self-esteem and body image in young adults, and whether body dissatisfaction, general distress, or symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress help explain that relationship. Ninety-eight undergraduate students from two universities completed an online survey measuring idealized online self-presentation (Presentation of Online Self Scale), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), body esteem (Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults), general distress (Distress Questionnaire-5), and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms (DASS-21). Contrary to expectations, greater idealized self-presentation was associated with higher, not lower, self-esteem. Idealized self-presentation was not significantly related to body esteem, …

Experiences Of Marginalization At The Intersection Of Race, Ethnicity, And Disability In Higher Education, Nora L. Portillo Jan 2026

Experiences Of Marginalization At The Intersection Of Race, Ethnicity, And Disability In Higher Education, Nora L. Portillo

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Black and Latine college students with disabilities navigate higher education at the intersection of racism and ableism, yet their experiences remain underexamined. Autism and ADHD are particularly underrepresented in research and public discourse; moreover, unlike other disability categories in which students of color are overrepresented, Black and Latine children are less likely than white children to be accurately identified, and both disabilities are often framed around white prototypes. Guided by Disability Critical Race Theory, the present exploratory qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with ten undergraduates identifying as Black and/or Latine and with ADHD and/or on the autism spectrum attending a …

Holding The District Together With Duct Tape And Determiniation: A Study Of Superintendent Stress, Robert Orion Thompson Jan 2026

Holding The District Together With Duct Tape And Determiniation: A Study Of Superintendent Stress, Robert Orion Thompson

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers’ work found the superintendent role was increasingly complex. Superintendents experienced elevated stress, burnout, and turnover. However, the ways in which district context and coping strategies interacted to shape superintendent well-being remain insufficiently understood, particularly in rural settings. This study examined how school superintendents perceived and experienced occupational stress, the impact of that stress on their well-being and leadership, and the coping strategies they used. Notably, there was a focus on district size differentiation. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through two focus groups in the western side of a rural state with superintendents representing districts with large …

Shared Fate In Adult Romantic Relationships, Clement Antwi Jan 2026

Shared Fate In Adult Romantic Relationships, Clement Antwi

Dissertations and Theses

Shared fate captures the extent to which individuals perceive their outcomes as yoked to those of their partner, serving as a proximal indicator of interdependence in romantic relationships. Although prior research has established the Shared Fate Scale as a measure of perceived interdependence, little is known about its psychometric properties over time within ongoing romantic relationships or whether it helps explain relationship quality. I examined these key questions using two longitudinal studies of adults in romantic relationships across three waves spanning approximately two years (N = 445 at Wave 1, N = 260 at Wave 2, and N = 181 …

Covid-19 Pandemic-Induced Social Isolation: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Exploration Of Age And Time, Renee Reedy

Dissertations and Theses

Lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered social functioning, creating an urgent need to understand the lived experience of isolation across life stages. This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored how age and time shaped social isolation during the pandemic. Sixteen participants from three-generation households—adolescents (n=5), adults (n=6), and older adults (n=5)—were interviewed approximately five years post-isolation. Recruitment occurred through ResearchMatch, and interviews were conducted between February and March 2025. Participants represented diverse racial, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds, with isolation periods ranging from 27 to 426 consecutive days (¯x = 165 ± 124 days). Data analysis followed Gadamer’s hermeneutic circle …

Helpful Autism School-Based Services: Perspectives From The People That Received Services, Michael Angelo Grizzaffi Jan 2026

Helpful Autism School-Based Services: Perspectives From The People That Received Services, Michael Angelo Grizzaffi

Dissertations and Theses

Transitioning high school students with autism, primarily with a level 1 diagnosis, from high school to independence in young adulthood has evidence-based practices. However, preferences of the students who are receiving services had not been considered before. This study reviews the thoughts of what prior high school students find helpful in the services they receive. Choosing individualized evidence-based practices is ideal for students. Prior high school students' experiences demonstrate the desire for more transition skills teaching. Leading special educators in the skills of some evidence-based practices is required for the individualization of these practices the students need to occur. Leading …

Racial Concepts, Dei, And Social Equity, Yan Lei Jan 2026

Racial Concepts, Dei, And Social Equity, Yan Lei

A with Honors Projects

DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) often deviates from the original goal of “equality of opportunity.” By institutionalizing identity labels and the protection of “vulnerability,” it reduces individuals to group identities, transforms historical injustices into contemporary obligations, and solidifies fragility. This not only fails to achieve genuine fairness but also weakens individual agency, distorts incentive mechanisms, and damages society’s long-term resilience, efficiency, and trust.

Evaluating Motivation In Stem Education: A Positive Self-Talk Intervention, Tiffany L. Copeland

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study evaluated a social-emotional learning intervention that taught positive self-talk to high school students from underrepresented minority groups in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The setting of this study was a place-based program that immersed students in hands-on STEM activities while located in Philadelphia’s life science hub. Before taking a science assessment, students set effort-based goals and learned to say self-talk statements such as “I will give my best effort” and “Even when it's hard, I will give 100%.” This mixed-methods program evaluation compared pre- and post-intervention data using a paired-samples t-test, linear regression, and correlation analyses. Data …

All She Ever Wanted Was The World: The Emergence Of Vocal Methodology, Pedagogy, And Opera Performance For Women In The Nineteenth Century, Emma Hawkinson

Dissertations and Theses

Important music methods books began to emerge in the 1750s with instrumental treatises for flute, piano, and violin. By the end of the nineteenth century, there was a multitude of treatises for a variety of instruments, including classical voice. This study investigates and analyzes the content of treatises from four individual women who performed, taught, and published vocal treatises in the nineteenth century: German Mathilde Marchesi (1821–1913), Italian Virginia Boccabadati (1828–1922), Spanish Matilde Esteban (1841–1915), and English American Clara Kathleen Rogers (1844–1931). These methods books are set in the historical context of the music industry before and during the nineteenth …

A Mixed Methods Study On Mexican American Satisfaction And Perception Of Clinical Trials, Grace Manzo

Dissertations and Theses

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration sets expectations on the collection and reporting of race and ethnicity data. Ethnic data for Mexican Americans is often reported as “Hispanic or Latino.” Mexican Americans make up a significant percentage of “Hispanic or Latinos,” however, they remain significantly underrepresented in clinical trials. Grounded in Expectation-Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), this mixed-methods study investigates the relationship between satisfaction and perception of Mexican Americans who have participated in an ophthalmology clinical trial. This research aimed to understand the relationships among satisfaction with the clinical trial process, patient-reported outcomes, and …

Understanding The Role Of School Resource Officers In Addressing Students’ Mental Health Needs: A Phenomenological Study, Ryan Christopher Vinzant Jan 2026

Understanding The Role Of School Resource Officers In Addressing Students’ Mental Health Needs: A Phenomenological Study, Ryan Christopher Vinzant

Dissertations and Theses

Since the 1990s School Resource Officers (SROs) have been commonly employed in schools throughout the United States. However, their jobs may look very different depending on what setting they are in and the different administrative policies governing their work. Throughout this time, researchers have focused on the different roles that SROs have within the educational environment and how these roles are put into action when interacting with students. However, there have been limited studies exploring the role SROs play when interacting with students who are experiencing mental health problems or experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental health problems have become …

Effects Of Hurricane Weather Events On Perceived Stress, Academic Motivation, And Resilience In College Students From Louisiana, Courtney Renee Harrington

Dissertations and Theses

In the fall semester of 2020, five hurricanes were projected to make landfall along the coast of Louisiana. The following fall semester of 2021, Hurricane Ida, a major category 4 storm landed and wreaked havoc among Louisiana’s coastal universities. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of hurricane events on students’ perceived stress, academic performance, and resilience. It was hypothesized that students affected by the landfall of a hurricane would have increased stress, decreased academic motivation, and decreased resilience compared to normative college students. A cross-sectional survey was administered at two southern Louisiana universities as well as …

Interactional Synchrony In Mother-Infant Dyads: Developmental Changes And The Impact Of Maternal Emotion Dysregulation Over Time, Jessica Taylor Kelly Jan 2026

Interactional Synchrony In Mother-Infant Dyads: Developmental Changes And The Impact Of Maternal Emotion Dysregulation Over Time, Jessica Taylor Kelly

Dissertations and Theses

Infancy is a period of rapid development, while motherhood is often a time of heightened emotionality (Bjelica et al., 2018; Leclère et al., 2014). Synchrony between mother and infant is one of the earliest bonding experiences, with short- and long-term implications for the infant’s development and the mother-infant relationship (Leclère et al., 2014). However, little research has characterized developmental shifts in mother-infant synchrony. Maternal emotion dysregulation is likely to influence mother-infant synchrony (Doba et al., 2022; Lotzin et al., 2015, 2016). Yet little research has evaluated the impact of maternal emotion dysregulation on mother-infant synchrony over time. This project aims …

The Road To Winning This Battle: A Corpus Informed Exploration Of Metaphor In The National Addresses Of Leo Varadkar And Micheál Martin During The Covid-19 Pandemic (2020–2022), Caoimhe Power Gallagher

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The first case of the novel Covid-19 virus reached the island of Ireland in February 2020. The nation-focused response was one of the most striking characteristics that most countries shared throughout the pandemic. Corpus-linguistic research on Covid-19 communication is reasonably well established across various contexts. However, it is under researched in Ireland. Building trust and a successful national response is very much dependent on how heads of government confront health emergencies through public communications. Political leaders across the world often use metaphors in their speeches to strategically control their audiences’ perceptions of various topics. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Deputy Leo …

Navigating Relationships In Social Care Practice: Student Experiences On Placement In Ireland., Louise Mcanarney Mrs, Geraldine Fay Ms.

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The professionalisation of social care in Ireland has reshaped the sector for workers, educators and students. With the advent of CORU regulation, social care education and practice has changed dramatically, necessitating a focus on the evolution of relational processes.

Quality relationships are the cornerstone of effective social care practice and form the basis for developing other essential skills (Morrison, 2015; McSweeney & Williams, 2018; Kaushik et al., 2023).  This concept is firmly embedded within the Standards of Proficiency for Social Care Workers as set out by the Social Care Workers Registration Board (SCWRB). Considering the significance of interpersonal dynamics; education …

Exploring The Psychological And Emotional Impact Of Race-Based Traumatic Stress (Rbts) Among The Black Irish Community, Diekololaoluwa Amujo, Sharon Lambert Dr

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Research indicates that racialised minorities may experience psychological distress and trauma as a result of racism and racial discrimination. Race-Based Traumatic Stress (RBTS) describes the psychological injury that can arise from repeated racial harm and has been linked to mental health disparities among racially minoritised groups. This qualitative study explores how Black Irish individuals experience and make sense of racism, and how racial distress is sustained over time within the Irish context.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 Black Irish participants who had experienced racism and sought psychological support. Data were analysed using reflexive Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2021). …
