Treatment With Carotid Angioplasty Stent Placement For Post-Stroke Depression Compared To Antidepressants, Heqing Huang, Kangning Chen, Tianyou Guo, Yao Zhang, Wei Qu, Zhenhua Zhou, Guojun Liu, Lin Chen
Neurosciences
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the differences between carotid angioplasty stent placement (CAS) and antidepressants on post-stroke depression (PSD) in high-grade carotid artery stenosis patients. METHODS: In this prospective, controlled study, 182 cerebral ischemia stroke patients with high-grade carotid artery stenosis who were admitted to the Southwest Hospital of the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China, between April 2004 and March 2009 were enrolled. Based on different treatments, the patients were assigned to 2 groups: the CAS group (n=104), and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) group (n=78). All patients were tested using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and the National …

How Indeterminism Shapes Ecologists’ Contributions To Managing Socio-Ecological Systems, Sarah Michaels, Andrew Tyre
How Indeterminism Shapes Ecologists’ Contributions To Managing Socio-Ecological Systems, Sarah Michaels, Andrew Tyre
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
To make a difference in policy making about socio-ecological systems, ecologists must grasp when decision makers are amenable to acting on ecological expertise and when they are not. To enable them to do so we present a matrix for classifying a socio-ecological system by the extent of what we don’t know about its natural components and the social interactions that affects them. We use four examples, Midcontinent Mallards, Laysan Ducks, Pallid Sturgeon, and Rocky Mountain Grey Wolves to illustrate how the combination of natural and social source of indeterminism matters. Where social indeterminism is high, ecologists can expand the range …

Law And The Argumentative Theory, 90 Or. L. Rev. 837 (2012), Timothy P. O'Neill
UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship
Like many law professors, I have coached my share of moot court teams. As you probably know, in most competitions students either choose or are assigned one side of the case to brief. But for the oral argument segment of the competition, students must argue both sides of the case, “on-brief” and “off-brief,” often in alternate rounds.
At the end of a competition, with their heads still swimming with arguments and counterarguments, students will sometimes ask, “OK, so can you tell us which is the correct side?” I always say, “Of course I can. . . . The correct side …
Group I Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors On Selective Cellular Subtypes In Epileptogenic Malformed Cortex, William Bruch
Group I Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors On Selective Cellular Subtypes In Epileptogenic Malformed Cortex, William Bruch
Theses and Dissertations
Cortical malformations from altered development are common causes of human epilepsy. The cellular mechanisms responsible for the epileptic state of cortex remain unclear and a significant portion of these cases do not respond to treatment. Previous electrophysiological recordings in the Jacobs lab in a rat polymicrogyria model indicated an increased response to group I metabotropic glutamate receptor agonists in the region adjacent to the malformation (PMZ). In addition there was a novel response in low threshold spiking (LTS) interneurons via mGluR5 activation. To determine whether cell specific expression of these receptors was altered in malformed cortex immunohistochemical stains were performed …

The Early Demise Of Early Release, Cecelia Klingele
The Early Demise Of Early Release, Cecelia Klingele
West Virginia Law Review
Reversing the tough-on-crime policies that have defined American criminal justice for the past two decades, cash-strapped states across the nation have begun reducing the number of people they confine in prisons and jails. In their efforts to reduce correctional populations, numerous states have passed laws that allow parole boards, prison officials, or judges to shorten the sentences of people already serving time in custody. These so-called "early release" laws have proven highly controversial and in at least three states have been repealed outright. In others, they remain on the books but have provided less savings than anticipated because of the …

Marital Satisfaction And Conflict: A Cross Cultural Comparison Between China And Australia, Lauren Gabelich
Marital Satisfaction And Conflict: A Cross Cultural Comparison Between China And Australia, Lauren Gabelich
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
The levels of marital satisfaction and how these were predicted by scores on the Romantic Partner Conflict Scale were assessed separately in Australian males (n = 48) and females (n = 100) and Chinese males (n = 321) and females (n = 321). Contrary to expectations, marital satisfaction was higher in the Australian sample than in the Chinese sample. However, there was a culture by gender interaction in which Australian females were much more satisfied than Chinese females. Satisfaction scores for males in both cultures were different, with males being less satisfied than females in the …
Visual Memory Improvement In Recognition [Presentation], Allison Prandl
Visual Memory Improvement In Recognition [Presentation], Allison Prandl
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
Fluid intelligence and working memory might be improved by training on a visual working memory n-back task (Jaeggi, Buschkuehl, Jonides & Perrig, 2008). Previous honours projects at ECU have shown no improvement in fluid intelligence due to n-back training, and a significant increase in fluid intelligence associated with general knowledge and vocabulary task training. One possibility may be that visual recognition memory may mediate the improvement in fluid intelligence (Jaeggi et al., 2008). The present study therefore investigates whether n-back training can increase visual recognition memory. A sample of 47 participants underwent 20 days of cognitive training …
Retrospective Time Perception Of A Long Task: Using Music To Distinguish Between Attention-Based And Memory-Based Models [Presentation], James Brooks
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
Attention-based models and memory-based models propose different outcomes of retrospective time perception of a long task. The effects of music on perceived time duration was used to determine which model best explained the results. In an independent design, 48 adults were randomly assigned to a silent condition or one of three music conditions. In all four conditions participants completed a Sustained Attention to Response Task . In the music conditions, participants listened to 62 songs for total duration of 23 minutes 10 seconds. The music conditions varied in the familiarity of the songs, and the instruments used to perform each …
For Love Or Money : The Underlying Motives Of A Workaholic, Aleksandra Kosevic
For Love Or Money : The Underlying Motives Of A Workaholic, Aleksandra Kosevic
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
In response to the technological innovations of the present era there has been a blurring of the frontier between work and personal life. For this reason there has been a rise in workaholism amongst employees in managerial and professional occupations. Workaholism literature is engrossed with its common associated negative outcomes, arguing for a preoccupation with materialistic rewards being one cause for this. The present study aims to explore the possibility that outcomes of workaholism pertain to the underlying motive of workaholism and these are not necessarily negative. Results indicated that autonomous motivation fully mediated the relationship between workaholism and job …
An Exploration Of Life's Issues That Adolescent Girls Face: Impacting Their Psychological, Physical And Spiritual Wellbeing, Samantha Lowden
An Exploration Of Life's Issues That Adolescent Girls Face: Impacting Their Psychological, Physical And Spiritual Wellbeing, Samantha Lowden
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
As adolescent girls transition in their development they can experience numerous extensive short term and long term personal challenges that impact their mental health and personal wellbeing for themselves and society (Call et al., 2002; Tolman, Impett, Tracy & Michael, 2006). This research utilised interpretative phenomenology to explore insights and interpret the lived experiences of adolescent girls in psychological wellbeing (PWB), physical wellbeing (PhysWB) and spiritual wellbeing (SWB). It discovered coping strategies the girls employ, implied ways to promote resiliency, self esteem and self confidence and highlighted the benefits and ideals that adolescent girls are seeking from prevention or support …

Pathways To Care : The Experience Of New Mother’S Perinatal Mental Health In Rural Areas, Belinda Butler-O’Halloran
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
This qualitative study sought to explore the lived experience of new mothers in rural areas. Specifically the experience of the women’s perinatal mental health was studied to understand the type of care they required in the early stages of motherhood. Findings indicate the women were unprepared for the difficulties of new motherhood which was isolating and lacking in support. New mothers found little help from the health care professionals such as GPs, CHN and Midwives due to professional time constraints and inability to develop a relationship. In addition new mothers were uncertain how unwell they needed to be before seeking …
Karen Burmese Refugee Youth And Facebook: The Influence On Sense Of Community And Belonging, Beth Hazelden
Karen Burmese Refugee Youth And Facebook: The Influence On Sense Of Community And Belonging, Beth Hazelden
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
There are currently over 42.5 million displaced persons worldwide, with 15.2 million identifying as refugees. The Karen Burmese are a persecuted ethnic group forced to flee to refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border. Australia plays host to 22170 Burmese, with 80% identifying as Karen. For the Karen and other refugees, involuntary migration is a difficult experience. Refugees face many challenges when resettling into a new community, and refugee youth experience additional challenges. It is important for psychosocial wellbeing to have a sense of community (SOC) and belonging (SOB), but this may be disrupted for refugee youth. One way that young …
Is There A Tiger Mother Effect? : An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Immigrant Vietnamese-Australian’S Parenting Experience, Tony Nguyen
School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations
Current census data reports that more than a quarter of Australia’s population is from overseas (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2007). With respect to the Vietnamese population, the 2006 Census has reported over 150 thousand Vietnamese-born people in Australia (ABS, 2007). While there has been a steady rise in the immigrant Vietnamese population, few studies have examined this population and this is extended to the parenting and acculturation literature (Nguyen & Cheung, 2009). The research literature has also tended to lump together distinct ethnic groups that make up the “Asian” designation, thus obscuring the inter-cultural diversity of research (Liu, Pope-Davis, …

Reforming State Mental Health Parity Law, Stacey A. Tovino
Faculty Articles
This Article is the final installment in a three-part project that presents a comprehensive challenge to lingering legal distinctions between physical and mental illness in the context of health insurance. The first installment in this series narrowly inquired as to whether the postpartum mood disorders should be classified as physical or mental illnesses in a range of health law contexts, including the context of health insurance. The second installment was broader in scope and challenged a number of federal provisions that allow publicly- and privately-funded health care programs and plans to provide mental health insurance benefits that are less comprehensive …
Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams
Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams
Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference
Information security is a necessary requirement of information sharing in the healthcare environment. Research shows that the application of security in this setting is sometimes subject to work-arounds where healthcare practitioners feel forced to incorporate practices that they have not had an input into and with which they have not engaged with. This can result in a sense of security practitioners and healthcare practitioners being culturally very different in their approach to information systems. As a result such practices do not constitute part of their community of practice nor their identity. In order to respond to this, systems designers typically …

Students’ Attributions Of Instructor Credibility As A Function Of Instructors’ Out-Of-Class Support, Adam C. Jones, Paul Schrodt
Students’ Attributions Of Instructor Credibility As A Function Of Instructors’ Out-Of-Class Support, Adam C. Jones, Paul Schrodt
Basic Communication Course Annual
This investigation examined the impact that instructor out-of-class support (OCS) and sex differences have on students’ perceptions of instructor credibility. Participants (N = 634) were randomly assigned to one of six experimental conditions manipulating the degree to which an instructor responds with a highly supportive, moderately supportive, or non-supportive message following a hypothetically stressful situation. Multivariate analyses revealed a two-way interaction effect of instructor OCS by student sex on perceptions of instructor credibility. Significant and meaningful main effects for instructor OCS on all three dimensions of credibility (i.e., competence, trustworthiness, and caring) were also obtained, with students attributing more credibility …

Trends In Communicative Self-Efficacy: A Comparative Analysis, Georgeta M. Hodis, Flaviu A. Hodis
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study integrates findings from the motivation-achievement and communication literature to underline the salient role that (communicative) self-efficacy beliefs play in academic settings. Additionally, this research shows that communicative self-efficacy beliefs can be accurately assessed by using a measure of self-perceived communication competence (SPCC). Using longitudinal data from 705 undergraduate students, the study shows that participants’ communicative self-efficacy beliefs increased linearly during the semester in which they were enrolled in a basic communication course. Finally, findings from this research indicate that the magnitude of change in self-efficacy was linked to the context of communication as well as attuned to the …
