Measuring Equity In Disability And Healthcare Utilization In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Cecile Barbou Des Rosieres Jan 2012

Measuring Equity In Disability And Healthcare Utilization In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Cecile Barbou Des Rosieres

Brown School Faculty Publications

This paper analyses equity in health and healthcare utilization in Afghanistan based on a representative national household survey. Equitable access is a cornerstone of the Afghan health policy. We measured socioeconomic-related equity in access to public health care, using disability– because people with disabilities are poorer and more likely to use health care – and a concentration index (CI) and its decomposition. The socioeconomicrelated equity in healthcare utilization was measured using a probit model and compared with an OLS model providing the horizontal inequity index (HI). We found low rate of healthcare facilities utilization (25%). Disabled persons are using more …

Poverty And Disability: A Vicious Circle? Evidence From Afghanistan And Zambia, Jean-Francois Trani, Mitchell M. Loeb Jan 2012

Poverty And Disability: A Vicious Circle? Evidence From Afghanistan And Zambia, Jean-Francois Trani, Mitchell M. Loeb

Brown School Faculty Publications

Disability and poverty have a complex and interdependent relationship. It is commonly understood that persons with disabilities are more likely to be poor and that poverty may contribute to sustaining disability. This interdependency is revealed not only through an examination of poverty in terms of income but also on a broader scale through other poverty related dimensions. Just how robust is this link? This paper compares data collected from household surveys in Afghanistan and Zambia, and explores the potential link between multidimensional poverty and disability. We find evidence of lower access to health care, education and labour market for people …

Is Age Really Just A Number?, Tina Tsikis Jan 2012

Is Age Really Just A Number?, Tina Tsikis

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Two separate groups of young and middle-aged adults watched videos of events being performed by a number of different college-aged females. Both the young goup of adults and the middle-aged group of adults were later tested on their memory for both the individual features of these events (i.e., actors and actions), and for conjunctions of features (i.e., which actor performed which action) in order to determine how likely they were to remember which actors performed which actions. Our results showed that frontal lobe functioning is not affected with age. However, there is a slight decrease in medial temporal functioning that …

Wolf Perception And Policy In The United States, Sarah. Rouse Jan 2012

Wolf Perception And Policy In The United States, Sarah. Rouse

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Throughout the course of North American history, wolves have been persecuted with a vengeance. Negative wolf perceptions have in the past created and continue to create controversial policies and views towards wolves. While most of these attitudes are geared towards gray wolves, as gray wolves are the most common and prominent, unfavorable perceptions have also extended to the less well-known red wolf. This study compares two red wolf reintroduction programs, one in the Tennessee-Kentucky area and the other in North Carolina, as well as the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Reintroduction program. After analyzing these three programs, it can be concluded that …

Chavez And The Media, Adrian J. Viller Jan 2012

Chavez And The Media, Adrian J. Viller

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The media has a significant influence on any political process. In Venezuela, particularly, the media plays an important rold in defining the electorate's political opinion and attitude toward the political process. This thesis analyzed how the media's preference for conflict and individual personalities exacerbated overall societal tensions and polarization in Venezuela since 1999. I suggest a framework for a future content analysis of news coverage of the 2012 presidential election in order to quantify and qualify the evolution of bias and balance in Venezuela's mass media.

Understanding The Role Of Transgenic Catalase In T-Cell Development In Murine-Based Studies, Richard M. Smith Jan 2012

Understanding The Role Of Transgenic Catalase In T-Cell Development In Murine-Based Studies, Richard M. Smith

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The thymus provides a unique microenvironment that facilitates T lymphocytes differentiation and maturation. However, the thymus atrophies after puberty which leads to an overall expression of metabolism gene pathways and low gene expression of certain peroxide scavenger enzymes such as catalase in thymic stromal compartments. From this data, we postulate that thymic stromal cells are highly susceptible to oxidative damage. We utilized a transgenic mice model overexpressing human catalase targeted to the mitochondria (mCat) to test our hypothesis that gerater oxidative protection should lower the degree of thymus atrophy. Our experiment focused on a direct comparison of organ weights (thymus, …

Characterization Of The Spinster Gene Ortholog C13c4.5 In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Darrin. Zahornacky Jan 2012

Characterization Of The Spinster Gene Ortholog C13c4.5 In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Darrin. Zahornacky

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The dauer larva is an alternate larval stage which allows the nematode C. elegans to survive environmestress during development. Dauer formation requires autophagy, a cellular process responsible for degrading and recycling cytoplasmic components. I investigated the role of a spinster orthiolog, C13C4.5, by examining the effects of C13C4.5 loss-of-function and by generating a transgenic strain which expressed a C13C4.5::GFP fusion protein. Under normal conditions C13C4.5::GFP is expressed diffusely in the intestine, but under autophagy-promoting conditions the expression pattern becomes more punctate. This is consistent with localization of C13C4.5 to autophagolysomoes during autophagy, as has been shown for spinster in D. …

Deshaney V. Winnebago County Department Of Social Services, Rachel Tunick Jan 2012

Deshaney V. Winnebago County Department Of Social Services, Rachel Tunick

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The Supreme Court's Ruling in DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services (1989) eld that "A State's failure to protect an individual against private violence simply does not constitute a violation of the Due Process Clause." (489 U.S. 189 at 197). A state child protection agency's failure to prevent near-fatal abuse of a four year old child under its supervision was not considered a violation of the child's fourteenth amendment rights. This thesis critcally examines the reasoning behind the majority decision in DeShaney ; and using feminist legal theory, discusses ways to effectively address state policy and liability when …

Perceptions Of Beauty, Michael John. Metzner Jan 2012

Perceptions Of Beauty, Michael John. Metzner

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? Historically, philosophers, poets, artists, and scientists have striven to define and express one of the most complex words in the English language : beauty. In contemporary society we tend to casually ascribe the word beauty to many various objects, paintings, sounds, and ideas. Its meaning can adhere to a stone, to the oscillating waves of an ocean, to the nonorganic as to the organic. Perceptions of Beauty is a project the follows my journey as an artist and how my perception of beauty has changed over the past four years. Using examples …

Verb Acquisition And Generalization Strategies Of Preschool Children, Rita Pruzansky Jan 2012

Verb Acquisition And Generalization Strategies Of Preschool Children, Rita Pruzansky

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This experiment tested 3 to 5-year-old children's (n=18) abilities to learn a novel verb in the context of one or two novel objects. We showed the children claymation videos of novel creatures performing two novel actions. They were then tested on whether they could correctly identify the action that a creature was performing in the form of a 'yes' or 'no' response. Children in the blocked condition, who learned the verbs in the context of one creature, responded correctly more often (p=.01) than children in the grouped condition, who learned the verbs in the context of two creatures. Results were …

Behavioral Enrichment Of Captive Black Bears (Ursus Americanus), Jasmine Gonzalez Jan 2012

Behavioral Enrichment Of Captive Black Bears (Ursus Americanus), Jasmine Gonzalez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

A crucial aspect of captive animal care is enrichment, ranging from simple additions of flora to complicated foraging puzzles. Enrichments are vital in creating an environment for animals that is similar to their wild habitat and eliciting natural behaviors. Enrichment is also used to inhibit unnatural or harmful behaviors, like pacing. Commonly, enrichment techniques are not scientifically tested, and the universality of enrichments is rarely scrutinized. This study explores the universality of a "Snak'n'Trim", a hollow ball 10 inches in diameter with a 1 inch opening for food items to be inserted into the ball. Four bears, (two male, two …

Characterization Of The Motor Protein, Kif9, In Mammalian Cell Mitotic Progression, Jordan Hoke Jan 2012

Characterization Of The Motor Protein, Kif9, In Mammalian Cell Mitotic Progression, Jordan Hoke

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The kinesin family of microtubule motors is divided into subfamilies based on structure and function. KIF9, founder of the Kinesin-9 family, has been found to interact with the GTPase Gem. Subsequent studies have shown that KIF9 is vital for flagellar movement and podosome regulation. Previous work has proposed KIF9 is required for microtubule organization as well as proper mitotic entry, progression and completion. In this study, I examined the function of KIF0 in mitotic progression using shRNA-mediated knockdown, and overexpression. In knockdown cells, I saw a significant delay in mitotic progression as well as an increase in multipolarity and multinuclearity, …

Social Networks And Personality In A Liberal Arts College, Amrita Gopaldas

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this study, relationships between social networks and personality in a small liberal arts college were examined. Participants were asked to list members of their social networks, the activities in which they participated, and to complete the Sentence Completion Test (SCT), and the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). On the CPI, individuals with high scores on measures related to extraversion (particularaly the CPI Sociability scale) will have a greater network size and report a larger number of activities. In additon, the extent to which participants formed relationships with individuals with similar levels of ego development, and similar personality profiles, that is, …

Employing Cultural Landscapes In Community Preservation, Rachel Blythe Jan 2012

Employing Cultural Landscapes In Community Preservation, Rachel Blythe

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Druid Hills is a historic suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, that was initially designed by landscape architech Frederick Law Olmsted in 1893. As one of Atlanta's first suburbs, Druid Hills has faced the consequences of sprawl, particularly in the 1980s when the Georgia Department of Transportation proposed construction of the Presidential Parkway, an expressway that would have cut through the middle of the neighborhood. In opposition to the expressway, members of the surrounding communities organized Citizens Against Unnecessary Thoroughfares In Older Neighborhoods (CAUTION). The strategic rhetoric of CAUTION's campaign emphasized Druid Hills' significance as "Olmsted's Vision of Atlanta," yet their use …

Quasi Set Topological Vector Subspaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2012

Quasi Set Topological Vector Subspaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors introduce four types of topological vector subspaces. All topological vector subspaces are defined depending on a set. We define a quasi set topological vector subspace of a vector space depending on the subset S contained in the field F over which the vector space V is defined. These quasi set topological vector subspaces defined over a subset can be of finite or infinite dimension. An interesting feature about these spaces is that there can be several quasi set topological vector subspaces of a given vector space. This property helps one to construct several spaces with …

Cardinal Functions And Integral Functions, Florentin Smarandache, Mircea Selariu, Marian Nitu Jan 2012

Cardinal Functions And Integral Functions, Florentin Smarandache, Mircea Selariu, Marian Nitu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper presents the correspondences of the eccentric mathematics of cardinal and integral functions and centric mathematics, or ordinary mathematics. Centric functions will also be presented in the introductory section, because they are, although widely used in undulatory physics, little known. In centric mathematics, cardinal sine and cosine are dened as well as the integrals. Both circular and hyperbolic ones. In eccentric mathematics, all these central functions multiplies from one to innity, due to the innity of possible choices where to place a point. This point is called eccenter S(s;") which lies in the plane of unit circle UC(O;R = …

Centric Cardinal Sine Function, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2012

Centric Cardinal Sine Function, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

According to any standard dictionary, the word "cardinal" is synonymous with "principal", "essential", "fundamental". In centric mathematics (CM), or ordinary mathematics, cardinal is, on the one hand, a number equal to a number of finite aggregate, called the power of the aggregate, and on the other hand, known as the sine cardinal sinc(x) or cosine cardinal cosc(x), is a special function defined by the centric circular function (CCF). sin(x) and cos(x) are commonly used in undulatory physics (see Figure 1) and whose graph, the graph of cardinal sine, which is called as "Mexican hat" (sombrero) because of its shape.

Neutrosophic Masses & Indeterminate Models Applications To Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2012

Neutrosophic Masses & Indeterminate Models Applications To Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we introduce the indeterminate models in information fusion, which are due either to the existence of some indeterminate elements in the fusion space or to some indeterminate masses. The best approach for dealing with such models is the neutrosophic logic.

Crowd Documentation: Exploring The Coverage And The Dynamics Of Api Discussions On Stack Overflow, Chris Parnin, Christoph Treude, Lars Grammel, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditionally, many types of software documentation, such as API documentation, require a process where a few people write for many potential users. The resulting documentation, when it exists, is often of poor quality and lacks sufficient examples and explanations. In this paper, we report on an empirical study to investigate how Question and Answer (Q&A) websites, such as Stack Overflow, facilitate crowd documentation — knowledge that is written by many and read by many. We examine the crowd documentation for three popular APIs: Android, GWT, and the Java programming language. We collect usage data using Google Code Search, and analyze …

Topic Based Query Suggestions For Video Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia Jan 2012

Topic Based Query Suggestions For Video Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Query suggestion is an assistive technology mechanism commonly used in search engines to enable a user to formulate their search queries by predicting or completing the next few query words that the user is likely to type. In most implementations, the suggestions are mined from query log and use some simple measure of query similarity such as query frequency or lexicographical matching. In this paper, we propose an alternative method of presenting query suggestions by their thematic topics. Our method adopts a document-centric approach to mine topics in the corpus, and does not require the availability of a query log. …

Performance Analysis Of Two Priority Queuing Systems In Tandem, Faouzi Kamoun Jan 2012

Performance Analysis Of Two Priority Queuing Systems In Tandem, Faouzi Kamoun

All Works

In this paper, we consider a tandem of two head-of-line (HOL) non-preemptive priority queuing systems, each with a single server and a deterministic service-time. Two classes of traffic are considered, namely high priority and low priority traffic. By means of a generating function approach, we present a technique to derive closed-form expressions for the mean buffer occupancy at each node and mean delay. Finally, we illustrate our solution technique with some numerical examples, whereby we illustrate the starvation impact of the HOL priority scheduling discipline on the performance of the low-priority traffic stream. Our research highlights the important fact that …

A Hybridized Lagrangian Relaxation And Simulated Annealing Method For The Course Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kim Leng Poh Jan 2012

A Hybridized Lagrangian Relaxation And Simulated Annealing Method For The Course Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kim Leng Poh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a timetabling problem at universities, where a master course timetable is given extrinsically and conflicts due to students' course enrollment do not need to be considered. A solver for the problem, which integrates both teacher assignment and course scheduling, is described. An initial solution is obtained by a mathematical programming approach based on Lagrangian relaxation. This solution is further improved by a simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed method has been tested on instances from a university in Indonesia, as well as on several randomly generated datasets, and the corresponding computational results are reported.
