Helping Government Agencies Become More Effective And Efficient: Discovering ‘Catalytic Combinations’ In Public Child Welfare Reform, Dara Menashi, Christopher Behan, Kathleen Noonan
The Foundation Review
· This article describes work of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Casey Strategic Consulting Group (CSCG), a 10-year, multistate initiative that embeds outside experts – both public-system and traditional management consulting – in child and family services systems to improve system performance and outcomes.
· The article describes five types of levers that were influenced in different combinations to promote change in different state systems. We call these “catalytic combinations.”
· In numerous states, including Maine, Louisiana, Virginia, and Indiana, the CSCG initiative produced measurable improvements in key performance areas, including shortening stays in foster care, improving rates of permanent …
Building The Capacity Of California’S Safety Net: Lessons From The Strengthening Community Dental Practices Demonstration, Fontane Lo, Clare Nolan, Len Finocchio
Building The Capacity Of California’S Safety Net: Lessons From The Strengthening Community Dental Practices Demonstration, Fontane Lo, Clare Nolan, Len Finocchio
The Foundation Review
· Community dental practices provide “safety net” services to populations who would otherwise have limited access to care. The financial crisis of recent years has made it increasingly difficult for safetynet dental practices to serve people most in need while still balancing their books.
· The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) and the California Pipeline Program (CPP) funded a demonstration project to test the effectiveness of practice-management consulting as a strategy for helping California’s community clinics survive and thrive. This model emphasizes customized technical assistance to enhance the business infrastructure behind the delivery of care.
· The evaluation of this demonstration …

Toward A High-Performance Culture: From Strategy To Strategic Human Capital At The Rhode Island Foundation, Melanie Coon
The Foundation Review
· The Rhode Island Foundation successfully applied to be part of the first cohort of the Talent Initiative, enabling the foundation to engage in human resources planning in support of its strategic plan.
· The strategic plan called for a shift from responsive to proactive grantmaking, fundraising, and leadership, which required different staff roles and skills.
· The Talent Initiative focused on three areas: talent, systems, and culture.
· The changes that were implemented included adoption of a new performance review system, a road map for professional development, and a streamlined approach to operations and technology support.
· Initial results …
Managing Expectations When Measuring Philanthropic Impact: A Framework Based On Experience, Frank Ridzi
Managing Expectations When Measuring Philanthropic Impact: A Framework Based On Experience, Frank Ridzi
The Foundation Review
· In order to achieve more targeted community change than possible in conventional grantmaking, foundations have developed a portfolio of activities ranging from capacity building to venture and catalytic philanthropy.
· Key to each of these approaches is a desire for meaningful impact. Yet, funders across the nation express dissatisfaction with their ability to prove or demonstrate impact.
· Conversations with colleagues and personal experience suggest that part of this dissatisfaction is due to a disconnect between the expectations of board members, donors, staff, and participants on one hand and what is actually feasible to measure on the other.

Student Affairs Turned Inside--Out: Evaluating Communication Satisfaction, Identity, And Values From Within An Organization, Stacey L. Reece
Student Affairs Turned Inside--Out: Evaluating Communication Satisfaction, Identity, And Values From Within An Organization, Stacey L. Reece
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"How well individuals relate to their assigned organization is vital to the organizations' success. The lack of communication within an organization is often to blame for the shortcomings of the organization. Other associated factors that lead to the dysfunction of an organization are the lack of understanding or acceptance of the values of the organization and the lack of being able to identify with the mission or values of the organization. This thesis examines how organizations internally communicate and assess the satisfaction levels of individuals within an organization in how well the organizational communication performs within the organization. In addition, …

Between Frontier And Factory: Growth And Development In Washington, Pennsylvania, 1810--1870, Eric D. Duchess
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the small town of Washington, Pennsylvania from its post-frontier period to the eve of industrialization. Two primary areas are covered in the study: the Market Revolution's growing influence on the local economy and society, and the Civil War's local impact. This study contributed to the field of urban and town history by providing a case study from a relatively under-examined region, the Upper Ohio Valley and southwestern Pennsylvania, by studying the relationship between its economic development and its social and political characteristics.;Washington was in many ways a typical small western Pennsylvania town, surrounded by farmland and serving …
A Study Of The Value Added By Transformational Leadership Practices To Teachers' Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment, Katherine H. Kieres
A Study Of The Value Added By Transformational Leadership Practices To Teachers' Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment, Katherine H. Kieres
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Based on Bass and Riggio's (2006) Augmentation Model of Transactional and Transformational Leadership, this quantitative study sought to identify the amount of variance in teacher job satisfaction and organizational commitment that can be explained by principals' transformational leadership behaviors, above and beyond the influence of transactional behaviors. 156 teachers in five Pennsylvania high schoo Is were surveyed about their job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and about the leadership behaviors in which their principals engaged. The researcher then used hierarchical linear modeling to test Bass and Riggio's (2006) Model within this sample group. The results of this study provide researchers with …

Cycles Of Electronic Health Records Adaptation By Physicians: How Do The Positive And Negative Experience With The Ehr System Affect Physicians' Ehr Adaptation Process?, Cherie Noteboom, Dhundy Bastola, Sajda Qureshi
Research & Publications
The integration of EHR in IT infrastructures supporting organizations enable improved access and recording of patient data, enhanced ability to make improved decisions, improved quality and reduced errors in patient care. Despite these benefits, there are mixed results as to the use of EHR. The literature suggests that the reasons for the limited use relate to policy, financial and usability considerations, but it does not provide an understanding of reasons for physicians’ limited interaction and adaptation of EHR.
Following an analysis of qualitative data, collected in a case study at a hospital using interviews, this research explains how physicians interact …

Positioning For Elementary School Success: Charting The Journey Of Adopting And Leading School Reform, Nancy Jo Burke
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this longitudinal case study was to develop a process and structure for adopting and leading critical school reform initiatives within a rural North Dakota pre-kindergarten through fourth grade elementary school. Elementary principals can use this process and structure to benefit staff, and ultimately, to improve student academic achievement. This longitudinal case study identified factors that facilitated or hindered a rural practicing elementary principal, staff, and school while implementing federal, state, and local school reform initiatives beginning in the 2005-2006 school year.
This longitudinal case study utilized a qualitative, grounded theory and case study approach to identify: (a) …

Examining Perceptions Of Servant Leadership In Administration Of Selected Public Schools, Peggy Jane Dunn
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the impact of Servant Leadership in an organization using the following variables: valuing people, developing people, building community, displaying authenticity, providing leadership and sharing leadership. The study also examined whether or not a correlation existed between years of faculty service, education level, and faculty gender. The researcher administered the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) designed by Dr. James Laub to three public schools; interviews were also conducted with three school leaders. This study suggests that a Servant Leader positively impacts an organization's overall success.

Moving From Contractor To Owner Operator: Impact On Safety Culture; A Case Study, Susanne Bahn
Research outputs 2012
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether a change in staffing contractual arrangements, specific training in hazard identification, mentoring of supervisors and the introduction of a robust safety system could improve an organisation's safety culture. How safety conditions change under contracted out labour compared to direct labour and the influence that contracting out has on organisational safety culture is explored.
Design/methodology/approach: The study used a case study methodology to detail how the change occurred over a six month period in 2011. As part of the analysis a model of the change process and push-pull factors is offered. …
Effective School Leadership For Return On Investment In Ict, Christopher Newhouse
Effective School Leadership For Return On Investment In Ict, Christopher Newhouse
Research outputs 2012
Research in Western Australian schools and reports from studies across the nation over the past decade have supported international research to find that the leadership of a school is a critical factor in the way in which of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) are used, and their subsequent impact on teaching and learning. This paper discusses this relationship by drawing on a range of local research and international reports. In a range of school situations it was found that particular characteristics of the leadership of a school and related decision-making processes are key determinants to the successful integration of ICT …
Coming Out And Being Out In The Executive Suite: The Experiences Of Senior Gay And Lesbian Leaders, Eric Lutzo
Coming Out And Being Out In The Executive Suite: The Experiences Of Senior Gay And Lesbian Leaders, Eric Lutzo
Student Scholarship
Research on experiences of gays and lesbians in the executive suite is almost nonexistent. We conducted\, to our knowledge\, the first empirical study specifically focused on gay and lesbian senior executives who came out in their organizations at late career stages. Phenomenological interviews with 25 executives revealed prioritization of professional vs. personal identity both before and after coming out\, emphasized the recursive nature of coming out in the executive suite and showed positive organizational outcomes of personal intentional change when gay and lesbian executives leverage their status to promote policy and culture reforms.,Doctorate of Management Programs
Traditional And Nontraditional Dean's Multi Level Multi Dimensional Complexity Leadership, Nicholas Spezza
Traditional And Nontraditional Dean's Multi Level Multi Dimensional Complexity Leadership, Nicholas Spezza
Student Scholarship
The higher education leadership literature has little to say about nontraditional candidates (executives who have never held a full time faculty post) and their ability to perform in senior leadership roles in higher education administration. We conducted a qualitative research design to capture the lived experiences of participants in higher education administration. We interviewed 21 deans in higher educational institutions. Our findings show that deans operate within what we label as a Multi Level Multi Dimensional System (MLMDS). We view this MLMDS through the lens and disciplines emerging from Complexity Leadership Theory (CLT). We also find the higher education environment …
Training Evaluation In Virtual Worlds: Development Of A Model, Richard N. Landers, Rachel C. Callan
Training Evaluation In Virtual Worlds: Development Of A Model, Richard N. Landers, Rachel C. Callan
Psychology Faculty Publications
Many organizations have adopted virtual worlds (VWs) as a setting for training programs; however, research on appropriate evaluation of training in this new setting is incomplete. In this article, we address this gap by first exploring the unique issues relevant to evaluation faced by training designers working in VWs. At the macro-organizational level, the primary issue faced is an organizational culture unreceptive to or otherwise skeptical of VWs. At the micro-organizational level, two major issues are identified: individual trainees unreceptive to VWs and general lack of experience navigating VWs. All three of these challenges and their interrelationships may lead to …

Through The Eyes Of The Family: A Collective Case Study Of Family Business Consulting, Cynthia L. Waisner
Through The Eyes Of The Family: A Collective Case Study Of Family Business Consulting, Cynthia L. Waisner
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Interest in family businesses has increased over the last 50 years. Little empirical research, however, has been devoted specifically to the study of family business consulting. Various practitioners have offered their insights regarding approaches and tools, and a few empirical studies have offered the practitioners’ viewpoints regarding the practice area. The purpose of this study was to add to this small body of research by providing a view of family business consulting through the lens of the family business member. The chosen method of inquiry was collective case study, to allow for both contextual understanding and cross-case comparison. A total …
Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens
Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study used Principal Component Analysis to examine factors that facilitate emergent change in an organization. As organizational life becomes more complex, today’s dominant management paradigms no longer suffice. This is particularly true in a health care setting where multiple sources of disease interacting with each other meet with often-competing organizational priorities and accountabilities in a highly complex world. This study identifies new ways of approaching complexity by embracing the capacity of complex systems to find their own form of order and coherence. Based on a review of the literature, interviews with hospital CEOs, and my organization development practice experience …
Leading Deeply: A Heroic Journey Toward Wisdom And Transformation, Richard Warm
Leading Deeply: A Heroic Journey Toward Wisdom And Transformation, Richard Warm
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation will explore leadership as a mytho-poetic transformational journey toward self-knowledge, authenticity, and ultimately wisdom; the power to make meaning and give something back to the world in which we live; and the necessity of transformation. I view leadership as a transformative process and a transformational responsibility. As leaders we must undergo our own transformation in order to lead change on a larger scale. The dissertation will be both philosophical and theoretical, exploring how the threads of the hero’s journey, transformation, wisdom, and leadership intertwine. It will also examine the role of education in this process. Education does not …
Getting Back To My Life: Exploring Adaptation To Change Through The Experiences Of Breast Cancer Survivors, Charles A. Foster
Getting Back To My Life: Exploring Adaptation To Change Through The Experiences Of Breast Cancer Survivors, Charles A. Foster
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The holding environment concept, developed by Donald Winnicott, has been used to represent the type of support that encourages adaptive change during psychosocial transitions. The leadership and change literature posited that the holding environment had the ability to shape the trajectory of the transition, yet did not test this empirically. The psychosocial breast cancer literature empirically researched support during and after treatments ended, but did not incorporate the holding environment concept. This presented the opportunity to inform both the leadership and breast cancer fields by studying holding environments in the breast cancer setting. This study had a twofold purpose: 1) …
Faculty Work: Moving Beyond The Paradox Of Autonomy And Collaboration, Mark A. Hower
Faculty Work: Moving Beyond The Paradox Of Autonomy And Collaboration, Mark A. Hower
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Freedom to pursue one's intellectual interests, known as professional autonomy, is a valued and longstanding faculty tradition. Profound changes in society and the academy, however, suggest new values may be emerging. Collaboration, for example, is increasingly vital to success outside of the academy, and faculty culture, long an individualistic domain, may be shifting in response. This multiple case study explores how faculty members experience the relationship between professional autonomy and collaboration within the context of their department work. Faculty members in four departments were interviewed and both qualitative and simple quantitative data collected. The study found faculty members satisfied with …
How Do Institutional Environments Affect Directors' Behaviors And Their Effectiveness?, Toru Yoshikawa, Hongjin Zhu
How Do Institutional Environments Affect Directors' Behaviors And Their Effectiveness?, Toru Yoshikawa, Hongjin Zhu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine how institutional environments affect outside directors’ behaviors and their effectiveness. Extant research on the board of directors has indicated that outside directors play a significant role in exercising independent control over management and providing resources. However, we know little about whether and how the relative importance of the two functions varies across different institutional environments characterized by distinct dominant exchange modes (contractual vs. relational). By differentiating between relationship-based and contract-based exchange regimes, we develop a conceptual model to show how the differences in transaction structures influence the relative importance of outside directors as monitors and resource providers, and …

Examining Graduate Students' Self-Reported Research Outcomes, Affinity-Seeking Behaviors, And Perceptions Of Relational Quality With Advisors From A Lmx Perspective., Stephanie Shimotsu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using LMX theory as an overarching framework in the instructional communication context, this dissertation both investigates graduate students’ affinity-seeking behaviors (i.e., affinity-seeking competence, strategic performance, use of affinity-seeking strategies) and research outcomes (i.e., research productivity, research self-efficacy, affective commitment, career commitment) that are associated with perceived relationship quality with advisors. Three hypotheses were forwarded to address the relationships among graduate students’ affinity-seeking behaviors, research outcomes, and perceptions of relationship quality with advisors. The results of this dissertation provided some degree of support for each hypothesis. Most notably, significant positive relationships were found among graduate student affinity-seeking behaviors and perceptions of …

Gender Disparity In Professional City Management: Making The Case For Enhancing Leadership Curriculum, Leann Beaty, Trenton J. Davis
Gender Disparity In Professional City Management: Making The Case For Enhancing Leadership Curriculum, Leann Beaty, Trenton J. Davis
Public & Nonprofit Studies: Faculty Publications
Professionally trained administrators are critical to the operation and management of governmental agencies. That is particularly true with respect to local government, where city managers are situated at the top of the organizational hierarchy. However, these senior management positions remain largely the domain of males; female represent just 12% of the positions. This disparity, for reasons still unclear, comes to the fore at a time when the field of public administration faces a new set of global challenges, and many in the field have expressed concern about a looming leadership gap. As the world of public administration changes, so must …
