Associations Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Fatness With Metabolic Syndrome In Rural Women With Prehypertension, Patricia A. Hageman, Carol H. Pullen, Melody Hertzog, Linda Boeckner, Susan Noble Walker

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

This study investigated the associations of fitness and fatness with metabolic syndrome in rural women, part of a recognized US health disparities group. Methods. Fitness, percentage body fat, BMI, and metabolic syndrome criteria were assessed at baseline in 289 rural women with prehypertension, ages 40–69, enrolled in a healthy eating and activity communitybased clinical trial for reducing blood pressure. Results. Ninety (31%) women had metabolic syndrome, of which 70% were obese by BMI (≥30 kg/m2), 100% by percentage body fat (≥30%), and 100% by revised BMI standards (≥25 kg/m2) cited in current literature. Hierarchical logistic regression models, adjusted for age, …

Asupan Gizi Dan Mengantuk Pada Mahasiswa, Sada Rasmada, Triyanti Triyanti, Yvonne M. Indrawani, Ratu Ayu Dewi Sartika

Kesmas

Status Gizi Ibu Dan Berat Badan Lahir Bayi, Khaula Karima, Endang Laksmining Achadi

Kesmas

Publications and Research

Objective. To assess the effectiveness of interventions that focus on reducing sedentary behavior (SB) among school-age youth and to identify elements associated with interventions' potential for translation into practice settings. Methods. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using 4 databases for peer-reviewed studies published between 1980 and April 2011. Randomized trials, which lasted at least 12 weeks, aimed at decreasing SB among children aged 6 to 19 years were identified. Results. Twelve studies were included; 3 focused only on SB, 1 focused on physical activity (PA), 6 were combined SB and PA interventions, and 2 studies targeted SB, PA, and …

Faculty Publications

Background: Previous studies exploring the association between 25[OH]D levels and mortality in adults with and without kidney disease utilized 25[OH]D thresholds that have recently been scrutinized by the Institute of Medicine Committee to Review Dietary References Intakes for Vitamin D and Calcium. Objective: We explored all-cause mortality rates across the spectrum of 25[OH]D levels over an eighteen-year follow-up among adults with and without an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) /min/1.73 m2. Design: The study included 1,097 U.S. adults with eGFR /min/1.73 m2 and 14, 002 adults with eGFR ≥60 ml/min/1.73 m2. Mortality rates and rate ratios (RR) across 25[OH]D groups …

Spectral Cross Correlation As A Supervised Approach For The Analysis Of Complex Raman Datasets: The Case Of Nanoparticles In Biological Cells, Mark Keating, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne Oct 2012

Spectral Cross Correlation As A Supervised Approach For The Analysis Of Complex Raman Datasets: The Case Of Nanoparticles In Biological Cells, Mark Keating, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Spectral Cross-correlation is introduced as a methodology to identify the presence and subcellular distribution of nanoparticles in cells. Raman microscopy is employed to spectroscopically image biological cells previously exposed to polystyrene nanoparticles, as a model for the study of nano-bio interactions. The limitations of previously deployed strategies of K-means clustering analysis and principal component analysis are discussed and a novel methodology of Spectral Cross Correlation Analysis is introduced and compared with the performance of Classical Least Squares Analysis, in both unsupervised and supervised modes. The previous study demonstrated the feasibility of using Raman spectroscopy to map cells and identify polystyrene …

Histology Slide, John Farber

The Medicine Forum

A 45 year old Black female without significant past medical history was admitted with insidious cough, dyspnea, nausea, vomiting, and progressive weight loss. She suddenly went into respiratory distress and succumbed to death. Autopsy subsequently showed widespread granulomatous disease. This slide of one of the lung lesions shows a noncaseating granulocyte with a fibrotic center surrounded by palisading histiocytes, consistent with a diagnosis of nodular sarcoma.

His vision improved significantly with serial intravitreal antifungal injections.

Nevirapine Hepatotoxicity: Case Report And Discussion, Matt Baichi Oct 2012

Nevirapine Hepatotoxicity: Case Report And Discussion, Matt Baichi

The Medicine Forum

Nevirapine (viramune) is a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor commonly used in combination with other antiretroviral medicines in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. The safety profile of nevirapine, as determined by review of prospective clinical trials, reports rash with an incidence of 16% as the most common side effect. Clinical hepatitis is reported to occur with an incidence of 1%. A review of the literature shows many case reports of nevirapine-induced hepatotoxicity in patients receiving both treatment and prophylaxis for HIV. The purpose of this case report is to stress the importance of early recognition and withdrawal of the offending drug.
