Lead is a pervasive toxin that has been implicated in human poisonings throughout history. Exposure mitigation strategies in the United States and worldwide have led to a decline in symptomatic poisonings and population blood lead levels; however, lead remains a major health hazard. In this article, we review the history of lead toxicity, clinical manifestations ranging from subclinical and subtle features to life-threatening complications, and the subsequent public health interventions in the US. In addition, we explore common routes of lead exposure and the unique differences between the US and Iran. Although the US has made significant strides with regard …

Mushroom Ganoderma Lucidum Prevents Colitis-Associated Carcinogenesis In Mice., Jiri Adamec
Mushroom Ganoderma Lucidum Prevents Colitis-Associated Carcinogenesis In Mice., Jiri Adamec
Bindley Publications
Background
Epidemiological studies suggest that mushroom intake is inversely correlated with gastric, gastrointestinal and breast cancers. We have recently demonstrated anticancer and anti-inflammatory activity of triterpene extract isolated from mushroom Ganoderma lucidum (GLT). The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether GLT prevents colitis-associated carcinogenesis in mice.
Methods/Principal Findings
Colon carcinogenesis was induced by the food-borne carcinogen (2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazol[4,5-b]pyridine [PhIP]) and inflammation (dextran sodium sulfate [DSS]) in mice. Mice were treated with 0, 100, 300 and 500 mg GLT/kg of body weight 3 times per week for 4 months. Cell proliferation, expression of cyclin D1 and COX-2 …
A Rough Look At The Shifting Effects On Learning Through Student Work Placement, Frank Cullen
A Rough Look At The Shifting Effects On Learning Through Student Work Placement, Frank Cullen
Articles
The use of internship as a means of informal education is relatively commonplace. This is evident by the vast amount of literature dedicated to workplace learning, however very little research to date has explored the impact of international culinary internships on students. This paper addresses the void in research by exploring the nuances associated with culinary internships and in particular investigates the 2006 and 2007 student cohorts studying in the Technological University Dublin for the degree award of BA in Culinary Arts. The paper examines the internship preparation and experiences examining the impact of internship on the student’s attitudes towards …

Correlation Of Air Displacement Plethysmography With Alternative Body Fat Measurement Techniques In Men And Women, Brittany L. Reinert, Roberta Pohlman, Lynn Hartzler
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 367-378, 2012. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions with serious health consequences. Techniques used to measure body fat (BF) yield variable BF estimates, and this variability may lead to underestimation or overestimation of BF and subsequent treatment options. The measurements that are most accurate (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and Air Displacement Plethysmography (ADP)) are expensive and often unavailable. The purpose of this study is to find the commonly available BF measurement that is the most accurate and practical for individual body types in the general population and compare these measurements to ADP (BOD POD …

Influence Of Pasture Management Regimes On The Abundance Of Four Target Beetle Groups, Christina Doehling, Frederick Baxendale, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Walter Schacht
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Limited information is available on the impact of pasture management regimes on the local arthropod community. The objectives of this study were to identify the insect orders and families associated with managed smooth bromegrass pastures and determine the effect of three management strategies on the abundance and occurrence of 4 key beetle groups. Pitfall samples were collected weekly from June 2 until September 2during the summer of 2010. Sixty-one families of insects, representing nine orders, were collected in the traps. A predatory ground beetle in the genus Cyclotrachelus made up 71.5% of all target beetles collected. No significant differences were …

Cyber Center Publications
Ionomics Atlas facilitates access, analysis and interpretation of an existing large-scale heterogeneous dataset consisting of ionomic (elemental composition of an organism), ge- netic (heritable changes in the DNA of an organism) and ge- ographic information (geographic location, altitude, climate, soil properties, etc). Ionomics Atlas allows connections to be made between the genetic regulation of the ionome of plant populations and their landscape distribution, allowing scientists to investigate the role of natural ionomic variation in adaptation of populations to varied environmental conditions in the landscape. The goal of the Ionomics Atlas is twofold: (1) to allow both novice and expert users …

Electrochemical Detection Of Ammonia In Aqueous Solution Using Fluorescamine: A Comparison Of Fluorometric Versus Voltammetric Analysis, Panchompoo Janjira, G. Compton Richard
Electrochemical Detection Of Ammonia In Aqueous Solution Using Fluorescamine: A Comparison Of Fluorometric Versus Voltammetric Analysis, Panchompoo Janjira, G. Compton Richard
Journal of Electrochemistry
Fluorescamine is a non-fluorescent reagent widely used for the quantitative determination of primary amines by fluorescence spectroscopy as it reacts readily with primary amines to form a fluorescent product. In this work, a new sensitive voltammetric method for the detection of ammonia in aqueous solution by the reaction with fluorescamine has been developed. First, the electrochemical behaviour of fluorescamine in the absence and presence of ammonia was investigated in 0.1 mol L-1 borate buffer solution (pH 9.0) by cyclic voltammetry using a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. As for fluorescamine itself, a well-defined irreversible oxidation peak could be observed at …

“Dancing the Orishas: Exporting a Constructed Form of Popular Culture from Havana to Arcata”
The staged sacred and social dances of the Afro-Cuban community were chosen to represent the new “revolutionary identity” of Cuba. Maya J. Berry writes about this phenomenon in her essay, “From ‘Ritual’ to ‘Repertory’: Dancing to the Time of the Nation” in the Afro-Hispanic Review. This paper builds on that work.
First, it defines a bodily archives a performed identity. Constructed by the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba (CFN), Compania Raices Profundas, Cutumba and Ballet Folklorico Afro-Cubano, this archives created the revolutionary identity. Through these dance …

Intra bone marrow-bone marrow transplantation (IBM- BMT) + thymus transplantation (TT) has been shown to reduce the incidence of graft versus host disease (GVHD) and restore donor-derived T cell function. In addition, an increase in insulin sensitivity occurred in db/db mice after IBM-BMT+TT treatment. Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 is a stress inducible enzyme which exert antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and immune-modulating properties. We examined whether IBM-BMT+TT could modulate the expression of HO-1 in the kidneys of db/db mice. Six-week-old db/db mice with blood glucose levels higher than 250 mg/dl were treated with IBM-BMT+TT. Six weeks later, the db/db mice showed decreased body weight, …

Regulation Of Excitation-Contraction And Excitation-Transcription Coupling In Gastrointestinal Smooth Muscle By Caveolin-1, Sayak Bhattacharya
Regulation Of Excitation-Contraction And Excitation-Transcription Coupling In Gastrointestinal Smooth Muscle By Caveolin-1, Sayak Bhattacharya
Theses and Dissertations
Caveolae are integral part of the smooth muscle membrane and caveolins, the defining proteins of caveolae, act as scaffolding proteins for several G protein-coupled receptor signaling molecules and regulate cellular signaling through direct and indirect interactions with signaling proteins. Caveolin-1 is the predominant isoform in the smooth muscle and drives the formation of caveolae. However, little is known about the role of caveolin-1 in the regulation of excitation-contraction and excitation-transcription coupling in gastrointestinal smooth muscle. In the present study we have characterized muscarinic m2 and m3 receptor signaling in gastric smooth muscle and tested the hypothesis that caveolin-1 positively regulates …

Over 51 million school hours are missed annually by school-aged children due to a dental problem or visit, with 117 hours missed per 100 children (NIDCR, 2002). Approximately half a million of California's 7.2 million school-age children missed at least one day of school in 2007 because of dental issues such as toothaches (Pourat, & Nicholson, 2009). Independent research regarding various educational and intervention programs have been conducted in elementary schools across the country that focus on nutrition and/or physical activity, some of which have found that the programs positively impacted students’ dietary behaviors (Edwards, Mauch, & Winkelman, 2011; Muth, …
Food Insecurity Across The First Five Years: Triggers Of Onset And Exit, Alison Jacknowitz, Taryn W. Morrissey
Food Insecurity Across The First Five Years: Triggers Of Onset And Exit, Alison Jacknowitz, Taryn W. Morrissey
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Very low food security among young children is associated with developmental deficiencies. However, little is known about the factors that predict entry into or exit from very low food security during early childhood. This study seeks to: (1) Understand the triggers that explain movements into or out of very low food security among children from birth to age five; (2) Examine the first aim using different definitions of food insecurity. The analysis relies on the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), a longitudinal, nationally representative dataset of approximately 10,700 children, to estimate linear probability models. Results suggest that residential moves …

The purpose of this study was to determine the food behaviors of nutritionally high-risk seniors as a function of their racial background, gender, marital status, and education level. A total of 69 seniors were identified to be at high nutritional risk using the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI) checklist. A supplemental questionnaire (SQ) was created to examine the risk factors in relation to the participant’s demographic background. Key results indicated that Asians practiced healthy food behaviors and women were more likely to eat alone (p≤0.05). Married participants (90.9%) were most likely to consume 2 meals or more each day. College educated …
