Exploration Games Played On A Ddr Pad Can Constitute Beneficial Physical Exercise, Kimthy Nguyen, Bohan Li, Martin Masek, Yuwanuch Gulatee

Research outputs 2012

The addition of an exercise component to computer games is a method that attempts to increase exercise compliance among the population. Various attempts at such games have been made, both commercially and as research projects, but the set of studied game mechanics that are both entertaining and provide beneficial exercise are relatively small. In our work, a game mechanic was designed for a floor-based input controller (DDR Pad). Rather than the standard mechanic usually employed for this device, our approach allows the player to explore a virtual world, requiring exertive movements on the input device in order to progress. The …

Changes In Dairy Food And Nutrient Intakes In Australian Adolescents, Carole Parker, Wendy Vivian, Wendy H. Oddy, Lawrie J Beilin, Trevor A. Mori, Therese O'Sullivan

Research outputs 2012

Dairy nutrients, such as calcium, are particularly important in adolescence, a critical time for growth and development. There are limited Australian data following individuals through adolescence, evaluating changes in dairy nutrient and dairy product consumption. We used a validated food frequency questionnaire to investigate consumption in adolescents participating in both the 14 and 17 year follow-ups of the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study. Most adolescents did not reach age and gender specific recommended daily intakes for calcium or magnesium at 14 years, and this decreased as they aged to 17 years (from 33.0% to 29.2% meeting for calcium, P < 0.05, and from 33.6% to 20.5% meeting for magnesium, P < 0.01). Mean intakes of calcium, potassium, riboflavin and vitamin A also decreased with age (P < 0.01). Mean dairy intake decreased from 536 ± 343 g/day to 464 ± 339 g/day (P < 0.01), due mostly to a decrease in regular milk, although flavoured milk consumption increased in boys. Cheese and butter were the only products to show a significantly increased consumption over the period. Girls decreased from 2.2 to 1.9 serves/day of dairy, while boys remained relatively steady at 2.9 to 2.8 serves/day. Our findings suggest that dairy product consumption decreases over adolescence. This may have implications for bone mass, development and later health.

Fussy Feeders: Phyllosoma Larvae Of The Western Rocklobster (Panulirus Cygnus) Demonstrate Prey Preference, M I Saunders, P A Thompson, A G Jeffs, Christin Sawstrom, N Sachlikidis, L E Beckley, A M Waite

Research outputs 2012

The Western Rocklobster (Panulirus cygnus) is the most valuable single species fishery in Australia and the largest single country spiny lobster fishery in the world. In recent years a well-known relationship between oceanographic conditions and lobster recruitment has become uncoupled, with significantly lower recruitment than expected, generating interest in the factors influencing survival and development of the planktonic larval stages. The nutritional requirements and wild prey of the planktotrophic larval stage (phyllosoma) of P. cygnus were previously unknown, hampering both management and aquaculture efforts for this species. Ship-board feeding trials of wild-caught mid-late stage P. cygnus phyllosoma in the eastern …

Sirtuin-1 Mediates The Obesity Induced Risk Of Common Degenerative Diseases: Alzheimer's Disease, Coronary Artery Disease And Type 2 Diabetes, Ian Martins, Andrea Wilson, Wei Ling Lim, Simon Laws, Stephanie Fuller, Ralph Martins

Research outputs 2012

Obesity, especially at mid-life, is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome, which in turn contrib- ute to coronary artery disease (CAD), Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The rise in overweight and obesity in all societies is prompting intense research into the causes and effects of the condition. Obesity disrupts many body systems including glucose and lipid me- tabolism, circadian rhythms and liver function. It also causes or increases inflammation and oxi- dative stress. Within cells, the endoplasmic re- ticulum (ER) appears to be particularly suscep- tible to such metabolic disruption. Sirtuin 1 …

Effect Of Solar Disinfestation And Purdue Improved Crop Storage Bagging The Control Of Prostephanus Truncatus Horn In Maize, Anastasia Wanjiru Njoroge

All Master’s Theses

This work demonstrates how an integrated approach can be used for controlling Larger Grain Borer (Prostephanus truncatus) in maize (Zea mays L.) using solar disinfestation followed by hermetic storage in Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags. PICS bags work by sealing grains in an airtight environment for long-term pest-free storage. In order to provide safe food with no inputs of chemical pesticides, the combination of solar disinfestation and the PICS bagging is likely to be a promising integrated approach for controlling P. truncatus. The first experiment of this work was the heat disinfestation experiment. The aim of this experiment was …

Mass Spectrometric Studies Of Sterol Metabolites To Elucidate The Biosynthetic Pathway Of Ecdysone In The Desert Locust Schistocerca Gregaria, Xavier Cheseto Jan 2012

Mass Spectrometric Studies Of Sterol Metabolites To Elucidate The Biosynthetic Pathway Of Ecdysone In The Desert Locust Schistocerca Gregaria, Xavier Cheseto

All Master’s Theses

Ecdysone is a prohormone for 20-hydroxyecdysone, in locusts it is biosynthesized in the prothoracic gland where dietary sterol, in particular cholesterol is sequestered from circulating hemolymph and converted into ecdysone or closely related ecdysteroids via two proposed synthetic pathways. The objective of this work was to a) identify by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry sterols and their trimethylsilyl derivatives present in wheat seedlings, oral secretion, gut, frass, hemolymph, fat bodies and prothoracic glands of the desert locust after feeding on wheat plant, b) propose a pathway for biosynthesis of ecdysone in the locust based on the results. Sterols were identified by …

Illinois Local Food Systems: A Geospatial Analysis, Abu S. Khan Jan 2012

Illinois Local Food Systems: A Geospatial Analysis, Abu S. Khan

Research Papers

Recently, more attention has been paid to studies of local food systems that are specific to a particular place as a potential solution for providing healthy food, reducing carbon emissions, and promotion of local agriculture sustainability. In the United States, the demands of locally produced foods have increased substantially in recent years. There are several reasons for this increase, including long-distance food transportation’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, the community food-security movement, and the increase of negative environmental problems related to large scale agriculture, etc., have contributed to the shift of attention from global food systems to local ones. Moreover, …

Export Pioneers In Latin America, Charles F. Sabel, Eduardo Fernández-Arias, Ricardo Hausmann, Andrés Rodriguez-Clare, Ernesto Stein Jan 2012

Export Pioneers In Latin America, Charles F. Sabel, Eduardo Fernández-Arias, Ricardo Hausmann, Andrés Rodriguez-Clare, Ernesto Stein

Faculty Scholarship

Export Pioneers in Latin America analyzes a series of case studies of successful new export activities throughout the region to learn how pioneers jump-start a virtuous process leading to economic transformation. The cases of blueberries in Argentina, avocados in Mexico, and aircraft in Brazil illustrate how an initially successful export activity did not stop with the discovery of a single viable product, but rather continued to evolve. The book explores the conjecture that costly burdens to entrepreneurial self-discovery (due to the deterrent effects of imitation by competitors) have held back potential exporters in post-reform Latin America. It also considers the …

Should Foreign Patent Law Matter?, Timothy R. Holbrook Jan 2012

Should Foreign Patent Law Matter?, Timothy R. Holbrook

Campbell Law Review

One of the most controversial issues in American law today is the extent to which it is appropriate for courts to consider foreign law when deciding issues of United States law. The debate has engaged the courts, Congress, and commentators, leading to discussions about completely banning references to non-United States law by courts. The reality is, however, that the United States courts often have to address or apply foreign law.

The Convergence Of Metabolism And Virulence Factor Regulation On Streptococcus Pyogenes Pathogenesis, Zachary Thomas Cusumano Jan 2012

The Convergence Of Metabolism And Virulence Factor Regulation On Streptococcus Pyogenes Pathogenesis, Zachary Thomas Cusumano

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Nutrient acquisition is a strong driving force in the evolution of pathogenesis. For many pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes, the coordination of metabolism with the expression of virulence factors is necessary for colonization. Previous research examining the regulation of virulence factors in S. pyogenes identified a unique catabolite sensing regulatory pathway composed of the tagatose bis-phosphate aldolase LacD.1. Examination of LacD.1 has determined that while it still maintains its ancestral enzymatic activity its regulation occurs via a mechanism independent of catalysis. Our approach to understanding how S. pyogenes' metabolism contributes to pathogenesis involves both understanding the adaptation of LacD.1 as …

Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens Jan 2012

Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study used Principal Component Analysis to examine factors that facilitate emergent change in an organization. As organizational life becomes more complex, today’s dominant management paradigms no longer suffice. This is particularly true in a health care setting where multiple sources of disease interacting with each other meet with often-competing organizational priorities and accountabilities in a highly complex world. This study identifies new ways of approaching complexity by embracing the capacity of complex systems to find their own form of order and coherence. Based on a review of the literature, interviews with hospital CEOs, and my organization development practice experience …

Recipes Of Resolve: Food And Meaning In Post-Diluvian New Orleans, Jessica Claire Menck

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

In 2005 the city of New Orleans experienced catastrophic flooding as a result of the failure of the federal levee system following Hurricane Katrina. This was an immediate disaster that evolved into a longer-term crisis as the city, state, and national government struggled to respond to the event. This study focuses on one part of managing crisis: meaning making. Specifically, the study investigates meaning making within the food community of New Orleans, asking the questions: is food a way for individuals and groups to make meaning following critical change events such as the failure of the federal levee system in …

Optimization Of Lactic Acid Fermentation Of York Cabbage For The Development Of Potential Probiotic Products, Amit Jaiswal, Shilpi Gupta, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam Jan 2012

Optimization Of Lactic Acid Fermentation Of York Cabbage For The Development Of Potential Probiotic Products, Amit Jaiswal, Shilpi Gupta, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam

Articles

In the present study, York cabbage was used as the sole substrate for the lactic acid (LA) fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum. York cabbage was blanched at 95°C for 12min to inactivate surface microflora prior to fermentation. To achieve an optimal fermentation condition which would result in higher release of phytochemicals and antioxidant (AO) capacity in the broth, Box-Behnken design integrating a desirability approach was used. A second-order polynomial equation was developed indicating the effect of solute/liquid ratio, agitation rate and fermentation time on desired parameters. The optimized factors were used for fermenting York cabbage to obtain maximum bacterial growth, …

Effect Of Different Rehydration Temperatures On The Moisture And Phytochemical Constituents Of Dried Edible Irish Brown Seaweed., Sabrina Cox, Shilpi Gupta, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam Jan 2012

Effect Of Different Rehydration Temperatures On The Moisture And Phytochemical Constituents Of Dried Edible Irish Brown Seaweed., Sabrina Cox, Shilpi Gupta, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam

Articles

The effect of temperature (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 °C) on the rehydration kinetics and phytochemical constituents of dried edible Irish brown seaweed, Himanthalia elongata, were studied. The moisture content of fresh and dried seaweed was 4.07 and 0.07 g water/g dry basis, representing a 98.1% reduction in water content. All rehydration moisture curves had a clear exponential tendency, and it was observed that the rehydration time decreased when temperature was increased. Although restoration of the product to its original moisture content was achieved, rehydration resulted in losses in phytochemical content. Moisture equilibrium was achieved fastest at 100 °C …

Articles

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of delactosed whey permeate (DWP) 27 treatment on antioxidant and physico-chemical properties of strawberries. Fresh strawberries 28 treated with 3 % DWP were analyzed for different quality, nutritional and microbiological 29 markers during 10 days of storage at 5 °C. The results showed that DWP treatment 30 significantly reduced incidences of decay (70 %) and numbers of total aerobic counts (~1.4 31 Log10 CFU/g) and yeast and moulds (~1.8 Log10 CFU/g). DWP treatment also inhibited the 32 loss of firmness (15 %) and maintained significantly (p

'Delivering' Education; Maintaining Inequality. The Case Of Children With Disabilities In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi, Anand Nandipati Jan 2012

'Delivering' Education; Maintaining Inequality. The Case Of Children With Disabilities In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi, Anand Nandipati

Brown School Faculty Publications

Education for children with disabilities in Afghanistan, particularly disabled girls, continues to lag behind despite laudable efforts of the Ministry of Education to promote universal access for all. The opportunity for education constitutes not just a means of achieving learning outcomes but also a space for social interaction, individual development and psychosocial support, which are paramount in Conflict Affected Fragile States (CAFS). However, many persisting barriers still need to be overcome in Afghanistan to allow education for all and change negative attitudes towards education of children with disabilities. In this paper we argue that viewing education as a basic commodity, …

Quantification And Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Tomography, Zijian Guo Jan 2012

Quantification And Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Tomography, Zijian Guo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Optical absorption is closely associated with many physiological important parameters, such as the concentration and oxygen saturation of hemoglobin. Conventionally, accurate quantification in PAT requires knowledge of the optical fluence attenuation, acoustic pressure attenuation, and detection bandwidth. We circumvent this requirement by quantifying the optical absorption coefficients from the acoustic spectra of PA signals acquired at multiple optical wavelengths. We demonstrate the method using the optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy: OR-PAM) and the acoustical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy: AR-PAM) in the optical ballistic regime and in the optical diffusive regime, respectively. The data acquisition speed in photoacoustic computed tomography: PACT) is limited by the …

Determinants Of Household Livelihood Security In Poor Urban Settlements In Bangladesh, S Rahman, S Akter Jan 2012

Determinants Of Household Livelihood Security In Poor Urban Settlements In Bangladesh, S Rahman, S Akter

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper applies a quantitative approach to measure and identify the determinants of household livelihood security (HLS) status in poor urban settlements of two cities in Bangladesh. Indices were computed for five HLS areas (economic, food, health, education and empowerment) using a large set of socio-economic characteristics of the households. Results reveal that economic security is the dominant component of the overall livelihood security status followed by food security. Irrespective of regional differences in opportunities, people in poor urban settlements appear equally insecure. Development programs focusing on improvements in access to assets, education and livestock/fisheries based livelihoods programs are suggested.

In adolescents, bariatric surgery has been shown to be safe and effective. England and Scotland have significantly lower rates …

Family Child Care Providers As Health Educators & Advocates: Perspectives Of Parents, Health Care Providers And Community Service Providers, Lauren Kathleen Graber Jan 2012

Family Child Care Providers As Health Educators & Advocates: Perspectives Of Parents, Health Care Providers And Community Service Providers, Lauren Kathleen Graber

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Family child care providers, who are trusted by parents and disproportionately serve families in poverty, may be in an ideal position to provide health education for vulnerable families. Prior research found that family child care providers perceive that they act as health educators and advisors for families. The perception of this role by others who are also invested in a family's health remains unclear. We hypothesized that parents receive health information from a myriad of sources but that their relationship to their children's family child care providers elevates the importance, relevance, and desire to adhere to the health information parents …

Actigraphy Sleep Patterns: Relationships To Body Mass Index And Physical Activity In Minority Children, Kathryn Wynne Jan 2012

Actigraphy Sleep Patterns: Relationships To Body Mass Index And Physical Activity In Minority Children, Kathryn Wynne

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Previous research suggests that short sleep duration and later bedtimes are associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and lower physical activity levels in children. We sought to determine if objective measurements of sleep duration and timing were correlated with BMI percentile and/or physical activity measures in low-income, minority children. Data were collected from 104 8- to 10-year-old children (58% female; 88.5% Latino or African-American; 51.9% overweight or obese) who were instructed to wear an accelerometer at their waists for 1 week. Data were manually analyzed to determine average sleep-onset (i.e. bedtime), sleep-offset (i.e. wake time), sleep duration, and minutes …
