Growth Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Guinea Fowl Broilers Fed Micronized-Dehulled Pea (Pisum Sativum L.) As A Substitute For Soybean Meal, Vito Laudadio, Samuel N. Nahashon, ‪Vincenzo Tufarelli

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of substitution of soybean meal (SBM) with dehulled-micronized peas (Pisum sativum) in diets of guinea fowl broilers on their growth performance, carcass yields, and fatty acid composition of meat. One hundred forty 1-d-old guinea fowl keets were randomly assigned to 2 dietary treatments, which were fed from hatch to 12 wk. The birds were fed 2 wheat middling-based diets comprising a control diet, which contained SBM (78 g/kg) and a test diet containing dehulled-micronized peas (180 g/kg) as the main protein source. The substitution of SBM with peas had no adverse effect …

"The Impulse To Rescue": Rescue Altruism And The Challenge Of Saving The Rescuer, John Hemsley Pearn, Richard Charles Franklin Nov 2012

"The Impulse To Rescue": Rescue Altruism And The Challenge Of Saving The Rescuer, John Hemsley Pearn, Richard Charles Franklin

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Rescuers who drown sacrifice their lives so that another might live; these drowning deaths are a particular challenge to prevent. In this research from Australia and the literature, we dissect and discuss the elements of “rescue altruism.” This 18-year critical incident population study identified 103 victims who drowned while attempting a rescue. In 74% of cases the primary "victim" (rescuee) survived, 50% of rescuers were visitors not familiar with the water hazard; 67% of the drowned rescuers were related to the primary victim. None were professionally trained in aquatic rescue. We propose that rescue altruism is composed of (a) an …

Ornamental Bill Color Rapidly Signals Changing Condition, M. F. Rosenthal, Troy G. Murphy, N. Darling, K. A. Tarvin Nov 2012

Ornamental Bill Color Rapidly Signals Changing Condition, M. F. Rosenthal, Troy G. Murphy, N. Darling, K. A. Tarvin

Biology Faculty Research

Ornamental bill color is postulated to function as a condition-dependent signal of individual quality in a variety of taxonomically distant bird families. Most red, orange, and yellow bill colors are derived from carotenoid pigments, and carotenoid deposition in ornamentation may trade off with their use as immunostimulants and antioxidants or with other physiological functions. Several studies have found that bill color changes in response to physiological perturbations, but how quickly such changes can occur remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that carotenoid-based orange bill color of American goldfinches Spinus tristis responds dynamically to rapid changes in physiological stress and reflects …

State Sponsored Famine: Conceptualizing Politically Induced Famine As A Crime Against Humanity, Jlateh Vincent Jappah Md, Msc, Danielle Taana Smith Nov 2012

State Sponsored Famine: Conceptualizing Politically Induced Famine As A Crime Against Humanity, Jlateh Vincent Jappah Md, Msc, Danielle Taana Smith

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper argues for the codification of politically induced famine as a crime against humanity. We use the term “state sponsored famine” to reflect the conceptualization of famine as not merely nature-induced but also as a willfully orchestrated state policy. The specification of faminogenic practices as criminal would subject perpetrators to international jurisdiction and provide deterrence to future offenders. We review traditional conceptualizations of famine as a geophysical event. We explore Amartya Sen’s concept of famine as caused by the collapse of individual entitlement and market exchange dynamics; we also discuss commentary on Sen’s approach. Further, we analyze the limits …

Attending High School Algebra I: In Search Of Well-Managed, Engaging, Culturally Relevant, And Caring Classrooms, Cassandra Dunn Gannett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The inequities in learning between the rich and the poor have become pervasive in United States. This is evidenced by the high school graduation rates, college attendance percentages, and employment statistics. Upon another wave of reform, the Common Core State Standards in mathematics are currently being adopted in hopes of increasing learning for all students, with a focus on college and career readiness. This study is intent on finding ways to remedy the inequities in mathematics between the high income and low income schools by focusing on one of the great glass ceilings to high school graduation and beyond, high …

Lower Nutritional Status And Higher Food Insufficiency In Frail Older Us Adults, Ellen Smit, Kerri M. Winters-Stone, Paul D. Loprinzi, Alice M. Tang, Carlos J. Crespo

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Frailty is a state of decreased physical functioning and a significant complication of ageing. We examined frailty, energy and macronutrient intake, biomarkers of nutritional status and food insufficiency in US older adult (age ≥ 60 years) participants of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (4731). Frailty was defined as meeting ≥ 2 and pre-frailty as meeting one of the following four-item criteria: (1) slow walking; (2) muscular weakness; (3) exhaustion and (4) low physical activity. Intake was assessed by 24 h dietary recall. Food insufficiency was self-reported as ‘sometimes’ or ‘often’ not having enough food to eat. Analyses …

The Impact Of Food Environment On Private Label Versus Branded Produce Choice, Christiane Schroeter, Xiaowei Cai Nov 2012

The Impact Of Food Environment On Private Label Versus Branded Produce Choice, Christiane Schroeter, Xiaowei Cai

Agribusiness

Over the past two decades, retailers are providing more Private label foods (PL), which are directly competing with the National brand (NB) products. For years, PLs competed as generic and cheaper versions with their high-priced NB substitute. However, modern PLs have improved in product quality relative to NBs and are available in the premium, organic, and even produce sections with the goal to distinguish themselves from their competitors’ product lines. One of the fastest growing segments in the produce industry consists of triple-washed cello-packed spinach. Using a two-step Heckman model, we determine the impact of household purchase information, demographics, and …

Overcoming Barriers To Trust In Agricultural Biotechnology Projects: A Case Study Of Bt Cowpea In Nigeria., Obidimma Ezezika, Abdallah S. Daar Nov 2012

Overcoming Barriers To Trust In Agricultural Biotechnology Projects: A Case Study Of Bt Cowpea In Nigeria., Obidimma Ezezika, Abdallah S. Daar

Health Studies Publications

Background: Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has been the world’s largest cowpea importer since 2004. The country is currently in the early phases of confined field trials for two genetically modified crops: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cowpea and nutritionally enhanced cassava (“BioCassava Plus”). Using the bio-safety guidelines process as a backdrop, we evaluate the role of trust in the operation of the Cowpea Productivity Improvement Project, which is an international agricultural biotechnology public-private partnership (PPP) aimed at providing pest-resistant cowpea varieties to Nigerian farmers. Methods: We reviewed the published literature and collected data through direct observations and semistructured, face-to-face interviews. Data …

A Learner-Centered Diabetes Management Curriculum, Daniel J. Salvo, Larrie W. Greenberg, Celia L. Henderson, Fran R. Cogen

Medicine Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE

Diabetes errors, particularly insulin administration errors, can lead to complications and death in the pediatric inpatient setting. Despite a lecture-format curriculum on diabetes management at our children’s hospital, resident diabetes-related errors persisted. We hypothesized that a multifaceted, learner-centered diabetes curriculum would help reduce pathway errors.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

The 8-week curricular intervention consisted of 1) an online tutorial addressing residents’ baseline diabetes management knowledge, 2) an interactive diabetes pathway discussion, 3) a learner-initiated diabetes question and answer session, and 4) a case presentation featuring embedded pathway errors for residents to recognize, resolve, and prevent. …

Multigenerational Families And Food Insecurity, James P. Ziliak, Craig Gundersen Nov 2012

Multigenerational Families And Food Insecurity, James P. Ziliak, Craig Gundersen

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The prevalence of multigenerational families is on the rise in the United States, as is food insecurity. We estimate the effect of resident grandchildren on the risk of and transitions in food insecurity using repeated cross sections and longitudinally linked two-year panels of the Current Population Survey from 2001-2010. We find that rates of food insecurity in families with a grandchild present are at least twice as high in a typical year compared to families without a resident grandchild, and the extent of very low food security increased substantially faster among these households over the past decade. The rise in …

Women Empowerment And Community Development Through Ecotourism, Katherine S. Barry

Capstone Collection

Eco-tourism is generically and broadly considered to be a trendy topic for the privileged traveler to obtain an “authentic cultural experience”. This paper aims to disprove common misperceptions and present failures the system has created. Eco-tourism is an over-exploited and under-utilized tool in the field of sustainable development. Many resorts and “cultural” tours dominant, while local people suffer economically, social and environmentally. However, in the far-reaches of the Kakamega rainforest, there is group that is filling the environmental, social and economic gap in the field of sustainable tourism. They are the Isecheno Women’s Conservation Group, empowering and educating women to …

Hydration Status Of Lifesaving Athletes During International Competition, Wade Sinclair, Nick J. Marshall Nov 2012

Hydration Status Of Lifesaving Athletes During International Competition, Wade Sinclair, Nick J. Marshall

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study investigated the hydration status of lifesaving athletes in situ during an International competition. Participants were 10 lifesaving athletes (6 male and 4 female) competing in pool- and ocean-based competition across three consecutive days. Assessment included upon-waking urine samples and body mass across 7 days including travel, training and competition days. Urine specific gravity was significantly lower while traveling compared to predeparture (p < 0.05). There were no gender differences for sweat rates, body mass changes, fluids consumed or percentage dehydration during the training sessions (p > 0.05). Sweat rates were higher than previously reported and there were no significant differences identified for daily body mass changes (p > 0.05). The results of the current study found that lifesaving athletes were capable of maintaining …
