Linking The Colonization Rate Of Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (Vam) To Species Dynamics In Succession, Jie Luo Jan 2012

Linking The Colonization Rate Of Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (Vam) To Species Dynamics In Succession, Jie Luo

Masters Theses

Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae (YAM) are the most common mycorrhizal fungi that form symbiotic associations with plant species. They form hyphae, vesicles and arbuscules which expand root surface area and exchange nutrients within root cells. Greater abundance of YAM can result in more nutrient uptake and disease resistance to the host plant. While mycorrhizae are often important to the growth and reproduction of individual species, their role in regulating plant community dynamics is less clear. Previous research has shown that YAM are tightly related to plant traits such as relative growth rate, foliar N and P concentrations, and responses to soil …

Use Of Portable Electronic Assistive Technology To Improve Independent Job Performance Of Young Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, James Collins

All Dissertations

Poor employment outcomes for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) persist, despite the development of legal policies designed to enhance access to gainful employment and to promote increased community integration. Recent data suggest that only 37% of young adults with ID obtain paid employment outside of the home. Among persons with ID who do obtain employment, career options are limited and nearly half are paid below minimum wage. Various strategies have been used to improve employment outcomes for those with ID, such as use of a job coach and teaching self-management strategies on the job site. These strategies often involve the …

Energetic Plasticity Underlies A Variable Response To Ocean Acidification In The Pteropod, Limacina Helicina Antarctica, Brad A. Seibel, Amy E. Maas, Heidi M. Dierssen

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Ocean acidification, caused by elevated seawater carbon dioxide levels, may have a deleterious impact on energetic processes in animals. Here we show that high PCO2 can suppress metabolism, measured as oxygen consumption, in the pteropod, L. helicina forma antarctica, by ∼20%. The rates measured at 180–380 µatm (MO2  = 1.25 M−0.25, p = 0.007) were significantly higher (ANCOVA, p  =  0.004) than those measured at elevated target CO2 levels in 2007 (789–1000 µatm,  =  0.78 M−0.32, p  =  0.0008; Fig. 1). However, we further demonstrate metabolic plasticity in response to regional …

Tracking Onslow: A Community In Transition. Edition 1, 2012, Kayt Davies, Jasmine Amis, Jon Hopper, Claire Ottaviano, Aine Ryan

Tracking Onslow: a community in transition

Onslow, the town and community you live in, is in for a lot of changes over the next few years. Gas projects will bring new faces, while many old faces are leaving, and new money will buy new things. Will this mean that Onslow loses some of it’s ramshackle, rustic charm? Will it attract hordes of new tourists who’ll crowd out the old crew?

Maybe, maybe not — either way we want to know what you think.

This project is a collaboration between the journalism program at Edith Cowan University and the Shire of Ashburton and it’s all about tracking …

The Lawmaking Family, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2012

The Lawmaking Family, Noa Ben-Asher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Increasingly there are conflicts over families trying to "opt out" of various legal structures, especially public school education. Examples of opting-out conflicts include a father seeking to exempt his son from health education classes; a mother seeking to exempt her daughter from mandatory education about the perils of female sexuality; and a vegetarian student wishing to opt out of in-class frog dissection. The Article shows that, perhaps paradoxically, the right to direct the upbringing of children was more robust before it was constitutionalized by the Supreme Court in Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) and Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925). In …

Translation Of Vibration From A Vibrational Plate To The Human Body, Lars Mattison Jan 2012

Translation Of Vibration From A Vibrational Plate To The Human Body, Lars Mattison

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study was done to validate the results of our previous study [1] as well as analyze how the Soloflex Whole Body Vibration Platform translates vibration to the human body. The purpose of causing vibration within the human body is to increase bone density, possibly by activating osteoblasts within the bone. When the body is subjected to stress, it adapts as quickly as possible to counteract this stress. There is evidence that vibration caused by low magnitude mechanical signals (LMMS) increases bone in children with disabling conditions [2] and young women (15-20 years) with low bone mineral density [3]. Our …

This study tested the hypothesis that preterm infants who had a blood gas derangement on at least 2 of the first 3 postnatal days are at increased risk for more severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). 1,042 infants born before 28 weeks gestational age (GA) were included. An infant was considered at risk if his/her blood gas measure was in the highest or lowest quartile for GA on at least …

Risk Factors Associated With Biliary Pancreatitis In Children, Michael Ma Jan 2012

Risk Factors Associated With Biliary Pancreatitis In Children, Michael Ma

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Little is known about risk factors for biliary pancreatitis in children. We hypothesized that ethnicity, obesity, and elevated pancreatic and hepatic biomarkers distinguish biliary from non-biliary and gallstone- from sludge-induced pancreatitis. We aimed to (1) characterize pediatric cases of biliary pancreatitis, (2) compare biliary with non-biliary cases, (3) examine differences between younger and older children, and (4) study features that distinguish gallstone- from sludge-induced pancreatitis.

We evaluated 76 episodes of biliary pancreatitis from 271 cases of acute pancreatitis in children admitted to Yale-New Haven hospital from 1994 to 2007. Of the 76 cases, 55% had gallstones, 21% had sludge, and …

Hypothesis: 1) Physicians' decisions to discuss hospice as an option for terminally ill patients are based on a limited approach to prognostication that excludes many patients who may benefit from discussions. 2) Identifying broader domains of health most important for prognostication, as an alternative to calculating life expectancy or mortality risk, might encourage prognostication and improve physician-patient communication.

Aims: 1) To examine the association between …

Sensing Development Of A Soybean Canopy Under P Or K Nutritional Stress, Martin M. Navarro Jan 2012

Sensing Development Of A Soybean Canopy Under P Or K Nutritional Stress, Martin M. Navarro

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) has been correlated with physiological plant parameters and used to evaluate plant growth. There is little information about the use of this technique to detect soybean nutrient deficiencies. The objective of this work was to determine the ability of the NDVI sensor to detect P and K deficiencies, and grain yield reduction, in soybean. During 2010 and 2011, NDVI measurements were made on a soybean field trial site known to exhibit yield responses to both P and K nutrition. Four replicates of 8 levels each of P and K nutrition were evaluated. The NDVI …

Invasive Ecology Of Exotic Old World Bluestem Grasses And Insights For Coastal Prairie Restoration In South Texas, Marvin E. Ruffner

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Despite the agronomic benefits of exotic grass plantings for pasture and rangeland forage, exotic grass invasions are capable of having dramatic and widespread impacts on native communities and ecosystems. Exotic Old World bluestem grasses (OWBG; Bothriochloa and Dichanthium spp.) have become increasingly invasive throughout the central and southern U.S. Little is known regarding the impacts of OWBG invasion on native grassland and savannah ecology and how to successfully control OWBG invasions in natural areas. Accordingly, this dissertation research had several objectives: 1) Evaluate the efficacy of herbicide and/or disking to control OWBG; 2) Assess the relative competitive ability of the …

The Role Of Auxin Resistant 1 (Axr1) In Arabidopsis Cytokinin Signaling, Yan Li Jan 2012

The Role Of Auxin Resistant 1 (Axr1) In Arabidopsis Cytokinin Signaling, Yan Li

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The plant hormone cytokinin plays essential roles in many aspects of growth and development. The cytokinin signal is transmitted by a multistep phosphorelay to the members of two functionally antagonistic classes of Arabidopsis response regulators (ARRs): the type-B ARRs (response activators) and type-A ARRs (negative-feedback regulators). Previous studies have shown that mutations in AXR1, encoding a subunit of the E1 enzyme in the related to ubiquitin (RUB) modification pathway, leads to decreased cytokinin sensitivity. This research shows that the cytokinin resistance of axr1 seedlings is suppressed by loss-of-function of type-A ARRs and that the cytokinin resistance caused by …

The Case For Abolishing Centralized White House Regulatory Review , Rena Steinzor Jan 2012

The Case For Abolishing Centralized White House Regulatory Review , Rena Steinzor

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

A series of catastrophic regulatory failures have focused attention on the weakened condition of regulatory agencies assigned to protect public health, worker and consumer safety, and the environment. The destructive convergence of funding shortfalls, political attacks, and outmoded legal authority have set the stage for ineffective enforcement, unsupervised industry self-regulation, and a slew of devastating and preventable catastrophes. From the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico to the worst mining disaster in forty years at the Big Branch mine in West Virginia, the signs of regulatory dysfunction abound. Many stakeholders expected that President Barack Obama would recognize and …
