Training Parent Volunteers As Effective Allies In Youth Empowerment Programs, Ria Shroff Jan 2012

Training Parent Volunteers As Effective Allies In Youth Empowerment Programs, Ria Shroff

Capstone Collection

Empowering adolescent girls is an effective and sustainable way to break the cycle of poverty and initiate a process of worldwide change. It is also extremely challenging, given the traditional perceptions of adolescents as reckless, carefree, incapable of assuming responsibility and unaware of their own needs for success and positive development. While organizations can provide many of the resources that adolescent girls need, the lack of parental support can be detrimental to both the overall development of the adolescent girl, her access to services, her mobility in society and the choices she will have in her future.

In order to …

The Role Of Local Food In Increasing Access To Healthy Food In Indianapolis, Indiana, Anna Hostetter Jan 2012

The Role Of Local Food In Increasing Access To Healthy Food In Indianapolis, Indiana, Anna Hostetter

Capstone Collection

In the United States today, incidents of obesity are on the rise, currently more than one-third, or 35.7% of U.S. adults are considered obese, up from 30.5% in 2000. These startling numbers are causing news institutions and politicians to refer to it as the “obesity epidemic”.

Obesity is linked to multiple health problems including Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and breast cancer (Aronne, L.J., 2002). There are numerous causes of obesity, including genetics, yet high rates of obesity have also been positively linked with a diet high in processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables (Drewnowski, A. …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sixteen of approximately 500 yearling steers died of acute selenium (Se) toxicosis after grazing on a Secontaminated range for only a few days. Field studies and chemical analyses identified the predominant toxic plant as western aster (Symphyotrichum ascendens, previously Aster ascendens), which contained over 4,000 ppm Se (dry weight). Several dead animals that were necropsied had acute severe myocardial necrosis characterized by edema and myocyte swelling, with hypereosinophilia, clumping, and coagulation of myocardial proteins. Whole blood from 36 surviving steers was collected and analyzed, and 10 steers with elevated Se concentrations were selected for close monitoring and clinical evaluations. Each …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sunflower is a potential crop for the southeastern United States for production of cooking oil or biodiesel. In 2007, we evaluated the effect of planting date (PD, 20 April, 20 May, and 20 June), nitrogen (N) application rate (0, 67, 134, and 202 kg ha−1), and hybrid (‘DKF3875’, ‘DKF2990’, ‘DKF3510’, and ‘DKF3901’) on sunflower productivity and oil profile in four Mississippi locations, Newton, Starkville, and two sites in Verona. There was a trend of increased oleic acid concentration with earlier planting dates, especially in hybrids with lower oleic acid concentration. Earlier planting dates of ‘DKF3901’ and ‘DKF2990’ (the …

The sugarbeet root maggot, Tetanops myopaeformis (Röder), is a major North American pest of sugarbeet, Beta vulgaris L. Previous research suggests that moderate T. myopaeformis control is possible with the entomopathogen Metarhizium anisopliae (Metch.) Sorok. We conducted a three-year (2002‒2004) experiment to assess impacts of oat, Avena sativa L. and rye, Secale cereale L., cover crops on persistence of corn grit-based granular or spray formulations of M. anisopliae isolate ATCC 62176 (i.e. MA 1200) applied at 8 x 1012 viable conidia/ha in sugarbeet. More colony forming units (CFUs) were detected immediately after application [0 days after treatment (DAT)] in …

The International Labour Organization And International Labor Standards, Roger Blanpain, Susan Bisom-Rapp, William R. Corbett, Hilary K. Josephs, Michael J. Zimmer

Faculty Scholarship

With the forces of globalization as a backdrop, this casebook develops labor and employment law in the context of the national laws of nine countries important to the global economy - the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, France, China, Japan and India. These national jurisdictions are highlighted by considering international labor standards promulgated by the International Labor Organization as well as the rulings and standards that emerge from two very different regional trade arrangements - the labor side accord to NAFTA and the European Union. Across all these different sources of law, this book considers the law of individual employment, …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sorghum is a gluten free grain that has potential to be used as an alternative to wheat flour for the Celiac Sprue market. There are thousands of sorghum lines that have not been characterized for grain, flour or end product quality. The objective of the research was to gain an understanding among grain sorghum quality factors and Chinese egg noodles quality. Four sorghum hybrids were characterized and evaluated for kernel characteristics, proximate analysis, flour composition and end product in a Chinese egg noodle system. Kernel size and weight affected the flour particle size and the amount of starch damage. Flour …

Judging Parents, Judging Place: Poverty, Rurality, And Termination Of Parental Rights, Janet L. Wallace, Lisa R. Pruitt Jan 2012

Judging Parents, Judging Place: Poverty, Rurality, And Termination Of Parental Rights, Janet L. Wallace, Lisa R. Pruitt

Missouri Law Review

Parents are judged constantly, by fellow parents and by wider society. But the consequences of judging parents may extend beyond community reputation and social status. One of the harshest potential consequences is the state's termination of parental rights. In such legal contexts, the state assesses parents' merits as parents in relation to a wide array of their characteristics, decisions and actions, including where the parents live. Among those parents judged harshly in relation to geography are impoverished parents who live in rural places. We argue that such judgments are unjust because poor rural parents often do not have ready access …

Privatization And Performance In The Implementation Of Temporary Assistance To Needy Families, Adam Michael Butz Jan 2012

Privatization And Performance In The Implementation Of Temporary Assistance To Needy Families, Adam Michael Butz

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

In response to the passage of the Personal Responsibility Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) and its lead cash assistance program Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), states have taken unique and divergent approaches to welfare policy implementation. One popular approach to workfare delivery, known as privatization, involves contracting with non-profit and for-profit entities operating within the private sector. The General Accounting Office reports that nearly every state is privatizing TANF services to some degree through third-party contracts, but very little is understood about why variation in contracting exists and the ramifications for the program outcomes of welfare recipients. This dissertation …

Creed Vs. Deed: Secession, Legitimacy, And The Use Of Child Soldiers, Trace C. Lasley Jan 2012

Creed Vs. Deed: Secession, Legitimacy, And The Use Of Child Soldiers, Trace C. Lasley

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

The use of child soldiers has troubled human rights activists, policy-makers, and local communities for decades. Although rebellions around the world routinely use children in their activities, many do not. Despite its overwhelming importance for conflict resolution, the topic of child soldiers remains understudied. My research blends classic rational choice and constructivist themes to develop an explanation for when child soldiers will be used, and when they will be avoided.

The likelihood of child recruitment is influenced by the value of international opinion; this is determined by the groups' long-term goals. Secessionist rebellions desire to have their own state. However, …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Sustainability: Chcs That Were Part Of A Consortia When Federal Funding Ended, Latonya B. Dunlow

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Community health centers (CHCs) serve an important role in addressing gaps in access to care experienced by millions of Americans. There have been programs in the past developed to provide funding support to increase access to care. However, when funding ends some grantees are faced with program sustainability challenges. This study sought to identify factors and advice for sustainability of programs and services once funding ends. The findings of this study are consistent with the literature; however there were two qualities of leadership important to sustainability that were not as pronounced in the literature that were found in this study-perseverance …

Trends In Hospital Admissions For Myocardial Infarcts For Women In Arizona, Florida And Maryland In 2000 To 2010, Rebecca Farmer Mcintyre

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Coronary arterial disease is the leading cause of death and morbidity in developing countries. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has traditionally been considered a disease affecting mostly men, yet women are increasingly at risk due to obesity and diabetes. However, current trends in the AMI risk for women are not well understood. This study used archival data on hospital discharges from three states within the USA to examine the 10-year trend in presentations of patients to emergency rooms (ER) with a presenting diagnosis of chest pain and AMI, to document rate changes by gender over time. We observed a decreasing number …

Symptom Intrusiveness, Chronic Conditions And Health-Related Quality Of Life: Development Of Conceptual And Measurement Models, Jill Marie Monfre

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: The number of patients in the United States living with chronic conditions is increasing as patients are surviving conditions that were previously fatal. This increase in survival has resulted in a shift in the disease burden in the United States from infectious to chronic diseases. Many patients with chronic conditions experience associated symptoms that impact their health-related quality of life more significantly than those without associated symptoms. To enable patients to achieve what they determine to be an acceptable state of wellbeing, health care providers must first be aware of the factors and the relationships among the factors that …

Disrupting The Dyad: Effects Of Parenting Stress On Infant Social-Emotional Development, Anna L. Zonderman Jan 2012

Disrupting The Dyad: Effects Of Parenting Stress On Infant Social-Emotional Development, Anna L. Zonderman

Public Health Theses

BACKGROUND. Social-emotional development in infancy can be compromised by exposure to violence, parental mental illness and other factors that interfere with a caregiver's ability to anticipate and respond to an infant's needs. Parenting stress may influence socialemotional development in the same way. In the context of disturbances to parental care, stress on the caregiver is known to adversely affect infant social-emotional development. However, there is limited empirical evidence explicitly examining the impact of parenting stress (as it is measured in this analysis).

OBJECTIVES. To examine the effect of maternal parenting stress on the social-emotional development of infants born to young, …
