The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability And Change In Diversified Farming Systems, Christopher M. Bacon, Christy Getz, Sibella Kraus, Maywa Montenegro, Kaelin Holland Jan 2012

The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability And Change In Diversified Farming Systems, Christopher M. Bacon, Christy Getz, Sibella Kraus, Maywa Montenegro, Kaelin Holland

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Agricultural systems are embedded in wider social-ecological processes that must be considered in any complete discussion of sustainable agriculture. Just as climatic profiles will influence the future viability of crops, institutions, i.e., governance agreements, rural household and community norms, local associations, markets, and agricultural ministries, to name but a few, create the conditions that foster sustainable food systems. Because discussions of agricultural sustainability often overlook the full range of social dimensions, we propose a dual focus on a broad set of criteria, i.e., human health, labor, democratic participation, resiliency, biological and cultural diversity, equity, and ethics, to assess social outcomes, …

Nutraceutical Antioxidants And Their Therapeutic Potential In Neurodegeneration, Erika Kristine Ross Jan 2012

Nutraceutical Antioxidants And Their Therapeutic Potential In Neurodegeneration, Erika Kristine Ross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neuromuscular disease that affects motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. Many studies indicate that mitochondrial oxidative stress (MOS) is a principal mechanism underlying the pathophysiology of this and other devastating neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we investigated a unique whey protein supplement (Immunocal®) to determine its neuroprotective efficacy in several in vitro models of MOS and in an in vivo mouse model of ALS. This non-denatured whey supplement contains cystine which is an oxidized form of cysteine, an essential precursor for synthesis of the endogenous antioxidant, glutathione (GSH). In primary cultured rat cerebellar …

Limb Bone Geometry And Skeletal Physiology In Mice Bred For High Levels Of Activity, Brittney Racheal Coats

Theses Digitization Project

The studies presented here evaluate the effects of exercise and genetics on biomechanically important traits and the skeletal system's role in maintaining proper metabolic health. The goal of the project presented here is to further our understanding of the leptin-bone-insulin pathway and relevant changes that may occur in this pathway as a result of exercise. Cross-sectional analyses of HR mice and control mice allowed or denied wheel access for 10 weeks, revealed significant differences in biomechanical properties.

Slytherin Pride: The Othering Of The Slytherins And Their Redemption Through Fandom, Kristy Leann Krumsiek Jan 2012

Slytherin Pride: The Othering Of The Slytherins And Their Redemption Through Fandom, Kristy Leann Krumsiek

Theses Digitization Project

The Slytherin characters of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series are generally thought of as the "bad guys," always causing trouble for the hero and repeatedly taking the wrong side of nearly every fight; however, these characters are not the stereotypical villains that often grace the pages of children's literature. The Slytherins fit the many faces of the Other, giving them a multitude of identities and, hence making them more complex than the characteristically static villain role provided in most children's literature. This thesis argues not only how the Slytherins fulfill the role of Other but how the often negative view …

Allocation Of Endogenous And Dietary Protein In The Reconstitution Of The Gastrointestinal Tract In Migratory Blackcaps At Stopover Sites, Agusti Muñoz-Garcia, Sarah Aamidor, Marshall D. Mccue, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Berry Pinshow Jan 2012

Mcwilliams, Berry Pinshow

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

During migratory flight, the mass of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and its associated organs in small birds decreases in size by as much as 40%, compared with the preflight condition because of the catabolism of protein. At stopover sites, birds need 2–3 days to rebuild their GIT so that they can restore body mass and fat reserves to continue migration. The source of protein used to rebuild the GIT may be exogenous (from food ingested) or endogenous (reallocated from other organs) or both. Because the relative contribution of these sources to rebuild the GIT of migratory birds is not yet …

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Objective

To characterize nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) in children.

Study design

We conducted a retrospective chart review of children diagnosed with AKI through the use of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision diagnosis code 584.5 or 584.9 from January 1999 to June 2010. Medical records were reviewed to confirm the diagnosis of AKI and to quantify NSAID administration. Pediatric RIFLE criteria were used to codify AKI. Patients were not classified as having NSAID-associated AKI if they had a diagnosis explaining AKI or comorbid clinical conditions predisposing to AKI development.

Results

Patients (N = 1015) were identified …

Delayed-Onset Malignant Hyperthermia In Association With Rocuronium Use, Ashton E. Beggs, Jennifer Quinn Mccann, Jan M. Powers

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Purpose Two cases of malignant hyperthermia suspected to be related to the use of a nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocker are reported.

Summary A pharmacogenetic disorder that may occur in as many as 1 in 3000 anesthesia procedures, malignant hyperthermia has been linked to the use of certain anesthetic gases and depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents (e.g., succinylcholine). Although nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockers were cited as contributing to the development of malignant hyperthermia in a small number of published reports, the agents are generally considered safe for use in at-risk patients. Here investigators report two cases in which the nondepolarizing agent rocuronium is thought …

Co-Crystallization And Polymorphism Of Naturally Occurring Peptide Derivatives, Kevin Crowley Jan 2012

Co-Crystallization And Polymorphism Of Naturally Occurring Peptide Derivatives, Kevin Crowley

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Carnosine is a dipeptide compound that is found in many dietary supplements and food products. Carnosine has many functions in the body, such as alleviating oxidative stress on tissues by acting as an antioxidant compound. Carnosine, therefore, has important anti-aging properties. Carnosine is also capable of forming protective sequestration structures around heavy metal ions; this process of chelating metals ions in solutions is very beneficial for maintaining the well-being of cells in the body. Thus, carnosine could be useful in pharmaceutical products for creating anti-aging drugs that would reduce tissue stress and promote a healthy cellular environment. I attempted to …

Overcoming Educational Disadvantage: Shelter Initiatives For Homeless Children, Diana Demont Jan 2012

Overcoming Educational Disadvantage: Shelter Initiatives For Homeless Children, Diana Demont

Undergraduate Review

This project addresses the challenges confronting children living in Massachusetts homeless shelters, with particular attention to these youths’ education as well as the services that family shelters provide to support their academic achievement. With 1.35 million homeless children living in the United States each year (“How Many People Experience Homelessness?”, 2009), it is imperative that this population receives a quality education. Homelessness can result in academic disadvantage for many children, who benefit from a strong collaboration between the school system and a well-equipped shelter to meet their unique educational needs. This qualitative study involved interviews with ten shelter employees across …

Understanding Precision Nitrogen Stress To Optimize The Growth And Lipid Content Tradeoff In Green Algae, Curtis Adams, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2012

Understanding Precision Nitrogen Stress To Optimize The Growth And Lipid Content Tradeoff In Green Algae, Curtis Adams, Bruce Bugbee

Algae and Biofuel

Precision N stress can be used to optimize growth and lipid content tradeoffs. Optimization requires low-level stress for some, high-level for others. Species selection should be broadened to include concurrent growth and lipid accumulation, as well as response to minimal N stress. N deprivation is a viable method for increasing lipid productivity. There is great promise among the natural species.

On A Condition Or A Mission?: Examining The Political Histories Of Anti-Poverty Policies In Brazil, Venezuela And Colombia, Diego A. Melo Jan 2012

On A Condition Or A Mission?: Examining The Political Histories Of Anti-Poverty Policies In Brazil, Venezuela And Colombia, Diego A. Melo

Latin American Studies Honors Projects

Political culture, fiscal constraints and institutional incentives have shaped the making and implementation of Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT) in Latin America. However, why have CCTs consolidated in Brazil, been secondary in Colombia and remained absent in Venezuela? Brazilian authoritarian legacy and neoliberal rationality combined with strong federalism during economic downturn and provided room for experimentation in social policy, eventually leading to the incorporation and future universalization of CCTs (Bolsa Família). In contrast, less rationalized bureaucracies in Colombia and Venezuela have operated under strong presidentialism, allowing economic recessions and executive electoral incentives to shape weak CCT implementation (Familias …

Influence Of Soil Microorganisms On Plant Growth And Fitness, Benjamin Jayne Jan 2012

Influence Of Soil Microorganisms On Plant Growth And Fitness, Benjamin Jayne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most terrestrial plants benefit from symbiosis with soil microorganisms. Symbiotic bacteria and fungi have wide-ranging effects on host plants, including improved nutrition, disease resistance, and drought tolerance. Association with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) can enhance growth and protect plants from environmental stressors while they share products of photosynthesis with the resident fungi. Scores of studies indicate that mycorrhizal plants are more resistant to drought stress than their non-mycorrhizal counterparts. Use of microbes as a plant and soil supplement in home gardens represents a sustainable alternative to resource-intensive inputs and may allow for reduced water use. I investigated the effects of …
