No. 16: The State Of Food Insecurity In Msunduzi Municipality, South Africa, Mary Caesar, Jonathan Crush, Trevor Hill
African Food Security Urban Network
There is plenty of food in Msunduzi, in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, but the urban poor regularly go hungry. This study of Msunduzi’s food security situation formed part of AFSUN’s baseline survey of eleven Southern African cities. The survey results show that the urban poor in Msunduzi are significantly worse off than their counterparts in Cape Town and Johannesburg. A third of the households reported that they sometimes or often have no food to eat of any kind. Household size did not make a great deal of difference to levels of insecurity but female-headed households are more food insecure than …

African Food Security Urban Network
AFSUN recently conducted a survey of poor urban households in eleven major cities in Southern Africa to better understand the seriousness of the urban food insecurity situation. This report looks in detail at the results for Windhoek and seeks to answer one central question, that is, why do the urban poor in Namibia’s capital generally appear to be better off than the urban poor in most of the other ten cities where the survey was conducted and why, at the same time, does Windhoek contain some of the most food insecure households in the region? As a city of migrants, …

This study attempts to validate the ‗spill-over effect‘ which has been used as theoretical foundation of MPA establishment that would guarantee improved fish catch and henceforth the welfare of the households. Given their socio-economic characteristics, small-scale fishing communities are still the most vulnerable sector in the country. The use of multiple indicators was preferred to capture the different dimensions of the issue of living standard and poverty, in response to the criticisms on these different indicators. The main data gathering method employed in this study was the households, through field survey. The communities‘ level of acceptance possibly influenced an MPAs …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of methods used for transferring health promotion knowledge within a community in Thailand. A three stage approach was used. Firstly, a situational analysis about the problem of health promotion knowledge was conducted in the Thapoo sub-district, the capital district of Phitsanulok province, Thailand. Secondly, a model for health promotion knowledge transference among community leaders was developed. Lastly, the model was in place through quasi-experimental design. Data was obtained about the effect of the model on knowledge transference. From situational analysis, it was found that pamphlets were the primary means of …

The Pantawid Pamilya: A Tepa Analysis Of The Philippine Poverty Reduction Strategy, Roselle J. Ranario
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The Government of the Philippines, through the leadership of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) implemented a Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Program dubbed as Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. Aside from providing income support to extremely poor households that would encourage them to increase investments in their children‘s human capital, 4Ps will serve as the lead vehicle through which the many cross-cutting issues (e.g. targeting, monitoring and evaluation) will be addressed (4Ps Concept Paper, 2009). The effectiveness of the program lies on its impact toward its target clientele. Using the Technical-Economic-Political-Administrative (TEPA) format, this study sought to examine the …

Conducting Focus Groups With College Students: Strategies To Ensure Success, Felice D. Billups
Conducting Focus Groups With College Students: Strategies To Ensure Success, Felice D. Billups
Research Methodology
Institutional researchers are often asked to conduct focus groups as an efficient way to address an institutional concern or problem. Typically, IR professionals depend on external consultants and specialists to conduct these group interviews for them; however, due to recent resource constraints (staffing, budgets), they are increasingly assuming responsibility for conducting the focus group sessions themselves. Institutional researchers require specialized skills in order to engage college students in this type of group interviewing; college students present specific characteristics and preferences that require careful consideration. Numerous research studies have used focus groups to support or augment research on college students (Breen, …

Several drugs and natural compounds are known to be highly neurotoxic, triggering epileptic convulsions or seizures, and causing headaches, agitations, as well as other neuronal symptoms. The neurotoxic effects of some of these compounds, including theophylline and ginkgotoxin, have been traced to their inhibitory activity against human pyridoxal kinase (hPL kinase), resulting in deficiency of the active cofactor form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP). Pyridoxal (PL), an inactive form of vitamin B6 is converted to PLP by PL kinase. PLP is the B6 vitamer required as a cofactor for over 160 enzymatic activities essential in primary and secondary metabolism. …

Alcohol Availability And Neighborhood Poverty And Their Relationship To Binge Drinking And Related Problems Among Drinkers In Committed Relationships, Christy M. Mckinney, Karen G. Chartier, Raul Caetano, T. Robert Harris
Social Work Publications
The authors examined the relationship of alcohol outlet density (AOD) and neighborhood poverty with binge drinking and alcohol-related problems among drinkers in married and cohabitating relationships and assessed whether these associations differed across sex. A U.S. national population couples survey was linked to U.S. Census data on AOD and neighborhood poverty. The 1,784 current drinkers in the survey reported on their binge drinking, alcohol-related problems, and other covariates. AOD was defined as the number of alcohol outlets per 10,000 persons and was obtained at the zip code level. Neighborhood poverty was as having a low (<20%) or high (≥20%) proportion of residents living in poverty at the census tract level. We used logistic regression for survey data to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals and tested for differences of associations by sex. Associations of neighborhood poverty with binge drinking were stronger for male than for female drinkers. The association of neighborhood poverty with alcohol-related problems was also stronger for men than for women. We observed no relationships between AOD and binge drinking or alcohol-related problems in this couples survey. Efforts to reduce binge drinking or alcohol-related problems among partners in committed relationships may have the greatest impact if targeted to male drinkers living in high-poverty neighborhoods. Binge drinking and alcohol-related problems, as well as residence in an impoverished neighborhood are risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV) and other relationship conflicts.

One of the most significant evolutionary changes underlying the highly developed cognitive abilities of humans is the greatly enlarged brain volume. In addition to being far greater than in most other species, the volume of the human brain exhibits extensive variation and distinct sexual dimorphism in the general population. However, little is known about the genetic mechanisms underlying normal variation as well as the observed sex difference in human brain volume. Here we show that interleukin-3 (IL3) is strongly associated with brain volume variation in four genetically divergent populations. We identified a sequence polymorphism (rs31480) in the IL3 promoter which …
The Touchiest Topic In High School: A Textual Analysis Of Public High School Policies Regarding Student-To-Student Touch, Adam Burl
McNair Scholars Journal
This paper opens the conversation about student-to-student touch practices, conceptions, and regulations within American public high schools. Prior research has shown that positive experiences with touch serve a vital role in child and adolescent development. Friendly touch behaviors benefit children and teen-aged persons both physiologically and psychologically. Additionally, haptic interaction is arguably the deepest form of communication. Yet scholars seldom examine how communication practices contribute to how individuals, including children, experience touch in various contexts. The current project analyzes the way touch is described, addressed, and framed in the student handbooks of public high schools from the state of Michigan. …

The Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA) of 1974 requires periodic assessments of the condition and trends of the Nation’s renewable natural resources. In this report, we document recent and historical trends in hunting and wildlife watching to fulfill RPA requirements. Using data from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation we present historical trends back to 1955 as well as recent changes from the past 10 to 20 years to evaluate changes in recreation since the 2000 RPA Assessment. We report on several attributes of wildlife …

Effects Of Ungulate Herbivory On Aspen, Cottonwood, And Willow Development Under Forest Fuels Treatment Regimes, Bryan A. Endress, Michael J. Wisdom, Martin Vavra, Catherine G. Parks, Brian L. Dick, Bridgett J. Naylor, Jennifer M. Boyd
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Herbivory by domestic and wild ungulates can dramatically affect vegetation structure, composition and dynamics in nearly every terrestrial ecosystem of the world. These effects are of particular concern in forests of western North America, where intensive herbivory by native and domestic ungulates has the potential to substantially reduce or eliminate deciduous, highly palatable species of aspen (Populus tremuloides), cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), and willow (Salix spp.). In turn, differential herbivory pressure may favor greater establishment of unpalatable conifers that serve as ladder fuels for stand-replacing fires. The resulting high fuel loads often require silvicultural fuels reductions …
The Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor At The Blood-Brain Barrier In Diabetes, Aileen J. Marcelo
The Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor At The Blood-Brain Barrier In Diabetes, Aileen J. Marcelo
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Diabetes is a risk factor for stroke and vascular dementia. Clinical studies using gadolinium-magnetic resonance imaging techniques have shown diabetic patients exhibit a permeability increase at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) (Starr et al, 2003). The BBB, a vascular interface at the level of brain microvascular vessels, functions to provide nutrients and oxygen from the peripheral circulation, mediates waste efflux from the brain, and protects the brain from toxins. These functions are due to the presence of tight junction proteins. Animal studies have shown increased BBB permeability is due to a decrease in these proteins (Hawkins et al, 2007). Based on …

Mechanisms Of Success: Plant-Herbivore Interactions And The Invasion Of Non-Native Lonicera Species In North America, Deah Lieurance
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Invasion by non-native species is a complicated process and many hypotheses have been proposed to explain how invasive plant species are often poor competitors in their native range, but dominant in their novel range including the enemy release and novel weapons hypotheses. Additionally, many invasive species are characterized as being tolerant and/or resistant to both damage and limitations in abiotic resources. These hypotheses are based on plant-plant, plant-microbial, and plant-herbivore interactions in the invaders novel range and are not mutually exclusive. The genus Lonicera (Caprifoliaceae) includes approximately 200 species worldwide, with 18 native and 16 introduced species in North America. …

Psychoactive Substances And Paranormal Phenomena: A Comprehensive Review, David Luke
Psychoactive Substances And Paranormal Phenomena: A Comprehensive Review, David Luke
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper investigates the relationship between psychoactive substances and so-called paranormal
phenomena falling within the study of parapsychology. It is primarily concerned with extrasensory
perception (ESP)—telepathy, precognition, and clairvoyance—as well as out-of-body experiences
(OBEs) and near-death experiences (NDEs). Psychokinesis (PK), aura vision, encounter experiences,
and sleep paralysis only make a very limited contribution to this review as they are seldom related
to psychoactive drugs within the parapsychological literature. The paper borrows widely, but by no
means exhaustively, from parapsychology as well as transpersonal studies, anthropology, ethnobotany,
phytochemistry, psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and neurobiology, particularly
neurochemistry. It is organized into neurochemical models …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Lung Cancer In Montgomery County, Ohio, Catherine Klose
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: Lung cancer statistics are alarming, especially when it is considered by many to largely be a preventable disease. Lung cancers are the leading cause of all cancer deaths, more than breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer combined. Cancers of the bronchus and lung make up the greatest percentage of the newly diagnosed cancers reported to the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS). The stage of diagnosis of lung and bronchus cancers is an important determinant of survival. Smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer. Race and gender disparities also exist with lung cancer, and socioeconomic factors have …

A Comparative Study Of Prospective Natural Gas For Vehicle (Ngv) Buyers' Behavior Intention In Thailand, Howard W. Combs, N. Likitsuwannakool, S. Chaipoopirutana
Faculty Publications
This study examines the prospects of how Natural Gas Vehicles (NGV) could gain more popularity, and more consumers, throughout Thailand. A survey of 500 potential consumers, comprising l00 respondents in each of the five separate regions, identified relevant geographic locations, demographic factors and their impact on behavior intention. The results of the study suggest that consumer’s behavioral intentions toward NGV are affected by factors pertaining to social influences and NGV attributes. Each group contains several sub-variables and is used in verifying its individual impact on consumer’s behavioral intention, while the differences in vehicle factors did not strongly affect the behavior …
