The Effects Of River Sediment, Endosulfan, And Moderate Hypoxia On Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) From The Tidal, Freshwater James River, Laura Williams
The Effects Of River Sediment, Endosulfan, And Moderate Hypoxia On Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) From The Tidal, Freshwater James River, Laura Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Juvenile male blue crabs move into the tidal, freshwater James River during warmer months to feed and grow by undergoing molting. In crustaceans, growth and molting are hormonally controlled. The physiological effects of a multiple-stressor environment are determined by comparing the blue crab’s oxygen uptake after exposure to pure sand, James River sediment, or endosulfan-spiked sand. The effect of multiple stressors on molting is measured by the activity level of N-acetyl-ß-glucosaminidase (NAG), an enzyme in epidermal tissue important to molting. The oxygen uptake was decreased by exposure to James River sediment but not for exposure to endosulfan for seven days. …
Perceived Stress And Surgical Wound Cytokine Patterns, Valentina Lucas
Perceived Stress And Surgical Wound Cytokine Patterns, Valentina Lucas
Theses and Dissertations
Normal wound healing is a complex process that occurs in overlapping phases and depends upon interactions of the patient, environment and a large number of cells, growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, and other biochemical mediators. Psychological stress has been shown to adversely affect the normal wound healing process through its impact on cellular immunity. Cellular immunity impacts wound healing through the production and regulation of many of the above biochemical mediators of wound healing. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the relationships among pre- and post-operative psychological stress experienced by women who were undergoing either immediate or delayed …

Natural History Of Four Species Of Platydracus Thomson (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) In Heliconia Bourgaeana Petersen (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) Flower Bracts, J. H. Frank, M. A. Morón
Insecta Mundi
Abstract. The insect fauna within inflorescences of Heliconia bourgaeana Petersen (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) was evaluated in Parque Metlac, Fortín de las Flores, Veracruz, Mexico between May and October 1995. Floral bracts were present in May and some persisted to October, despite much destruction in August by a grackle, Quiscalus mexicanus (JF Gmelin) (Icteridae). Flowers were abundant in the bracts in May-June, after which their number declined as fruits matured. Insects that fed on the flowers were most abundant in May-June; several of them could be pollinators; the immature stages of most of these insects were absent from Heliconia Linnaeus. The floral …

“What Do You Think Of Bleak House?”: Dickens’S Serial Novels And Victorian Literary Fandom, Susan Jane Ballinger
“What Do You Think Of Bleak House?”: Dickens’S Serial Novels And Victorian Literary Fandom, Susan Jane Ballinger
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
The objective of this thesis was to explore the many ways in which original readers experienced Victorian serial novels. Because the novels were published in parts over an extended period of time, often more than a year, readers experienced events in the novels in what they perceived as real time. This produced in readers an emotional connection not only between the events and characters of the novels, but between the readers and authors. The intensity of readers’ involvement in these novels is illustrated by the letters they wrote to the authors asking for clues, offering suggestions and criticism, and pleading …

Investigating A Model For Fetal Alcohol Damage In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Lindsay Kondo
Investigating A Model For Fetal Alcohol Damage In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Lindsay Kondo
Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol use and abuse has many harmful effects, especially to children exposed prenatally, including fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The disabilities due to fetal alcohol exposure continue throughout life and cause major financial burdens to society. The molecular mechanisms underlying FASDs are not well understood. We have taken a genetic approach to characterize ethanol’s effect on changing a discrete cell fate decision during embryogenesis in the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Our preliminary data suggest that ethanol can affect the development of AWC neurons, a pair of olfactory neurons in C. elegans. We suggest that lipids can protect AWC neurons …
Development Of A Closed-Loop Force Reduction Mechanism In A Gait Rehabilitation Device, Jeffrey Frankart
Development Of A Closed-Loop Force Reduction Mechanism In A Gait Rehabilitation Device, Jeffrey Frankart
Theses and Dissertations
Elliptical trainers are prescribed in rehabilitative exercise but difficult to implement in populations with significant functional gait deficits. Typical elliptical machines do not mimic normal gait and therefore require modifications for clinical rehabilitation. This research builds on previous modifications of an elliptical trainer designed to simulate level-surface walking. This design differed from a commercial version. It included articulated footplates and an electromechanically-driven virtual-cam to control footplate position. Ankle dorsiflexion elicited lower-extremity muscle spasticity which produced an unwanted gait variant during stroke patient testing. Spasticity is a hyperexcitable stretch reflex causing inefficient gait. This project’s purpose was to develop an autonomous …

Does Inclusion Of A Disclaimer Versus Warning Reduce The Effects Of Exposure To Thin-Ideal Media Images On Body Dissatisfaction And Intent To Diet?, Rheanna Nichole Ata
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between exposure to media images of ultra-thin models and body dissatisfaction has been documented in numerous correlational and experimental studies. Given the association between body dissatisfaction and negative outcomes such as eating disorders, prevention and intervention programs have sought to minimize the effects of the media on body dissatisfaction by, for example, providing education on the air-brushing techniques used to enhance the thinness of models depicted in advertisements. More recent efforts in Britain and France include the proposal of legislation that would require advertisements featuring hyper-thin models to include a disclaimer. To determine whether the inclusion of a …

New Technologies For Whole Wheat Processing: Addressing Milling And Storage Issues, Andres F. Doblado-Maldonado
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Whole wheat flour production and demand has increased dramatically during the last decade due to evidence supporting the benefits of whole grains in the diet. Hence, the food industry has provided a wide variety of new whole grain products. There are unique challenges that accompany whole wheat flour production, especially related to milling and storage. The present thesis provides new strategies on the adaptation of new technologies to overcome whole wheat processing issues. These issues are first discussed in a literature review and then followed by three research studies. In the first study, retail whole wheat flours were evaluated for …

The Relationship Of Food And Academic Performance: A Preliminary Examination Of The Factors Of Nutritional Neuroscience, Malnutrition, And Diet Adequacy, Allison Woodhouse, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D.
Christian Perspectives in Education
This article examines the extent of food’s impact on children’s academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to summarize existing research concerning the food-learning correlation and to synthesize studies regarding nutritional needs of the brain, malnutrition during development, and overall diet quality as related to academic achievement. Data finds a fundamental link between nutrition and cognition. Results suggest to the extent the brains of many United States schoolchildren do not receive the nutrients needed for optimal cognition, that academic performance may be consequentially reduced. Finally, a discussion of related learning theory and current debate, and practical implications for educational …

Calcium And Vitamin D Intake In Adults With Sickle Cell Anemia, Taylor M. Burgmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetic blood disorder that affects the transportation of oxygen through the blood. It causes episodes of pain, which may affect dietary intake. The purpose of this study was to look at the intake of calcium and vitamin D in adults with SCA, compared to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for these nutrients. This was a retrospective study of 12 patients with SCA using food diaries collected from a parent study. There were 6 males and 6 females included and their ages ranged from 21 to 52 years (median=31.75 years). A one-sample t-test was performed …

Morphological And Genetic Changes Induced By Excess Zn In Roots Of Medicago Truncatula A17 And A Zn Accumulating Mutant, Ricky W. Lewis, Guiliang Tang, David H. Mcnear
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Nutrient fluxes associated with legume-rhizobia symbioses are poorly understood and little is known regarding the influence of abiotic stresses on development and maintenance of N-fixing nodules and root system architecture (RSA). We examined effects of Zn on nodule development and structure, root architecture, and expression of nodulation-related miRNAs in Medicago truncatula and the mutant, raz (requires additional Zn).
FINDINGS: Excess Zn increased root and shoot associated Zn in both genotypes, however, raz plants had lower root associated Zn than WT plants. Roots of raz plants exposed to excess Zn had less volume, surface area, and total length compared to …
Improved Understanding Of Factors Influencing The Re-Emergence Of Goss's Bacterial Wilt And Blight Of Corn, Craig B. Langemeier
Improved Understanding Of Factors Influencing The Re-Emergence Of Goss's Bacterial Wilt And Blight Of Corn, Craig B. Langemeier
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Goss’s bacterial wilt and blight (Goss’s wilt) is a serious and sometimes severe disease of corn. Goss’s wilt was first identified in Dawson County Nebraska in 1969. Today Goss’s wilt can be found in two countries including the U.S. and Canada, and twelve states including Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Goss’s wilt was observed in Nebraska throughout the 1970’s, and from the early 1980’s until recently developed only sporadically. Around 2006, a re-emergence of the disease was observed in western Nebraska, northeast Colorado, and southeast Wyoming. Since then, reports of …
